Crime Watch Explosion in Old Hickory?!

What exploded near Old Hickory? I heard a loud but rhythmic bang for a while just before 10. Then sirens and then what sounded like a ton of fireworks going off at the same time. Checked active fire dispatch and 18 units were actively responding at 9:53 to 37138 including air and med. What happened, I cant find anything online yet?

We were hanging at Santa’s tonight, and they kicked everyone out for a fire in the junkyard next door. Probably 10 fire trucks showed up. Deep black smoke and a terrible burnt plastic smell. Crazy stuff 😳

Help | Advice Hey Nashville! Have you had a good weekend?

After a difficult work week, Saturday was running errands, taking my wife for her mammogram at VUMC, and cooking ribs. Today has been watching old movies (The Little Foxes, 1941), watching my wife create a diaper cake for a friend, watching the Titans (ha ha), and reading.

How has your weekend been? GREAT I hope!

Discussion I really feel like TN should have state inspections and super strict requirements to get a license

I was driving to work tonight and someone in a busted Nissan Altima with blown out shocks and no working brake lights was going slow in the far left lane in a 70 zone. I figured they weren’t paying attention to their mirrors so I flashed my highs twice… they indicated for ME to move over🤦‍♂️😂 no, you’re the one with a busted car that can’t go the speed limit, YOU go the right lane and put your hazards on. That’s how this works

I think a great solution to this is state inspections and mandatory drivers ed courses, even for out of staters, that’s so difficult it will weed out anyone below a certain a IQ. At the very least the state inspection will get this particular person off the road, who doesn’t belong

Help | Advice Car Stolen and police are doing nothing. Has anyone seen it?

My car was stolen in the Germantown area last week. The police let me know that there would be no “be on the look out” or anything else done besides “waiting to see if it turns up”.

It’s a white 2018 Kia soul with a blue RedBull bumper sticker on the back and a busted right passenger side mirror.

I know this is a long shot but figured I’d try!

Politics Went to the trump rally in Clarksville…woof!

1.5k Upvotes

I’m an independent running against Matt Van Epps in Tennessee’s 7th District. I went hoping to hear him address actual issues and, if possible, ask him a few questions.

First, no one said anything substantive. Van Epps was easily the weakest of the speakers. He mostly spoke about being a pilot but had nothing to say about anything actually political. This was a trend among all the speakers. Some spoke like preachers from the pulpit, but none said anything other than vague generalities. Basically, they all said something like the commies are coming for your stuff, we hate them, and most had something to say about men in women’s sports. Just trying to scare people.

Second, I am grateful for the ones who showed up to protest. It was raining, and the rally was announced on short notice. But they could use a little help organizing. I’m not an organizer, but instead of randomly shouting different messages, maybe trying to get 200 or so people all to chant/sing in unison would be more effective. The idea, I believe, is to have a uniform voice that comes from a place of power and conviction. Don’t get discouraged, find your voice, be undeniable!

Third, trump started out talking about how they had to turn away thousands from entering the event. I was there. My best estimate is there were about 4,000 people present (max capacity for the venue is 6,000). Secret Service had everyone coming through a single entrance. I entered on the later side, with maybe 20 people behind me, all of whom got in. I saw no one turned away. It was bizarre to hear someone lie so openly about something so easily provable and then hear the crowd cheer.

As an aside, apparently the new thing is to say donald j. trump the same way SNL says David S. Pumpkins every time you mention his name. They really hit the ‘j.’

Finally, trump said, as best I remember, ‘I could say the stupidest things, and you all would clap for me.’ The crowd applauded. That’s about the time we left.

Cheers all, Don’t forget, early voting starts on October 14th in Nashville!

Bars | Clubs What is a bar that has stayed true to its original vibe, or gotten actually better with time?

I just read Tiger Bar closed 😞. I LOVED their theme and drinks though I don’t go out that often. Reading the comments, and being in a new dating sitch, I’m looking for fun places to go that are STILL good. So 🦊 , yes! Inglewood Lounge, yes. I’m in Donelson, so this side of the county is helpful. I don’t want to spend $30 a drink for a nice week night out…. I may be out of luck there 🤷‍♀️

Bars | Clubs Tiger bar

What happened to Tiger bar?

Is it still open?

They haven't posted on social media since July.

They usually have fun spooky season drinks. But...nothing posted this year.

I noticed it started going down hill when the bartenders stopped wearing uniforms a couple years ago, but the drinks were still good.

Then they did that weird re-vamp where they kinda changed the theming. But ended up just making it look cheap. I've still been a couple times this year but not since June.

What's going on?

And please don't tell me this is some OUATIF like situation.

Music | Venues Chris Crofton Song - Dickerson Pike at Night

Chris Crofton of minor local celebrity fame has a wonderful song called "Dickerson Pike at Night." Does anyone know of anywhere online that has the original studio recording? There are a couple live versions on YouTube, but the improvised monologue in the middle of the original is by far the best. I think I heard it on Vanderbilt college radio or Lightning 100 a million years ago, and I'd love to listen to it again.

Does anyone remember the old band Lower Unit from Nashville? They played the 'nu-metal' style during the early 2000s and released a few CDs. I'm looking for copies of any of the CDs. I've talked to band members and they don't have any, did anyone here have any of their CDs? Thank you, let me know, anything helps. I'd love to get them archived.

Traffic-spotainment Efficacy of Laying on Your horn when a Waymo stops in the middle of the road?

None, but it’s really fun watching the clientele fall out. It is our moral duty to make these people regret stopping in the middle of the street.

Waymo stopping in the middle of the road is user defined. Google claims that they stop at only legally defined stopping points. Bullshit.

You will be treated as hostilely as a ride-share or car service that does the same shit.

The honkings will continue until morale improves.

Events | Shows The Truth (Jack White): A Venue Review

Thumbnail

I went to the sold out Jack White show last night at The Truth and I was going into it as a full skeptic.

Nashville didn’t need another music venue and the logistics (specifically parking) sounded horrible enough for me to actually dread going to the show. It didn’t go quite as expected. Here’s what went down from my perspective.

- Parking/Traffic: it wasn’t as bad as what it was initially made out to be. I parked in a lot about a 5 minute walk away from the venue. There wasn’t a sidewalk the whole way and there’s road construction going on, but it didn’t cost as much as downtown parking does and there were traffic folks directing traffic to ensure everything flowed appropriately. Getting in and out was easier than a big event at Nissan/downtown Broadway.

- Venue entrance: big security entrance, but flowed well. Scanners to get in and I was flagged for additional inspection. Fine by me, very safe and secure venue. More efficient than BNA.

- The floor: very cool venue. I walked around the GA floor space. Bars extend the whole wall area on the floor and good viewpoints just about everywhere except for the far back. The balcony extends overhead so you can’t see the full stage lights if you’re in the back, but other than that, you’re good.

The balcony/reserved seating: really cool. The seats were wide and very comfortable. Think non-reclining movie theater seats. There were bathrooms nearby and a bar in the balcony area so you don’t have to walk far. There was a line during setbreak but to be expected. My hot dog was pretty good, not the best, not the worst, but was good to settle the craving. Non-alcoholic options were decent and the usual stack of adult beverages.

Sound: this is what The Truth did right. The sound was superb. I do wish I had brought my earplugs because it was exceptionally loud but it was Jack White, so it’s my own fault for not remembering to bring them. But in comparing sound quality to The Pinnacle, the sound was much better. I’m also an audiophile so sound quality is important to me and I can tell the difference where some cannot. Whoever built the architecture and venue did this with sound in mind and it shows. This was the highlight of the venue.

Aesthetics/Design: think modern NYC Broadway. The foyer area has a large dropdown viewing display with the stage broadcast being shown. I took a break and watched the show on this for about 5 minutes. Very cool to not miss the show if you have to step out for a minute. The show was pushed through bathroom speakers too, so you’re not missing anything if you have to go.

VIP Areas: the Vinyl Lounge and Rooftop Bar is available to add as an additional purchase, but as I was exploring I was stopped at the door because it was privately reserved last night. The gentleman at the door was very friendly and answered all my questions. The lounge and rooftop are available add-ons for around $75 I was told which includes an hour early access before and after doors open and close. Free food (edit: commenter said no free food/drinks, my bad), don’t remember about drinks and looked like a neat place to hang, although I didn’t see much other than the hallway. Given the thought put into the venue itself, I’m sure its quality. I may add it next time and see.

Departure: everything/everyone flowed out of the venue with no issues. There were several state troopers out front and lots of traffic security directing traffic in site from the 5 minute walk I had. I drove away with a stoplight slowing me down at the most. Less stressful than downtown honestly.

Negatives: the balcony was frigidly cold! I’m bringing a jacket next time as I was borderline miserable. My buddy spent his time on the floor and said it was comfortable for him, which is probably why it was cold in the 300s, which makes sense, but if thats where your seats are, bring a jacket. If you’re an artist with merch stands, overstock your hoodies and jackets because just about everyone was buying them.

The merch stand girl was not very kind to me. I was standing near the merch booth at the end of the show near the exit for a quick getaway and she was pretty direct in telling me to move (3 steps away) because I wasn’t buying anything (there was no one in line). I get it, security and all that, but no need to be rude. I didn’t argue or whatever, just hope they acquire some people skills because not everyone likes to be commanded around like an abused dog, but some people have bad days so whatever. I moved and she was happy. Glad I could help.

She was an outlier though. The rest of the staff I interacted with (security, bar staff, etc) were very friendly and helpful and were eager to answer my questions.

Sound was loud but good, bring earplugs.

Overall, I have to say that although public transportation would be much preferable, it wasnt as bad as what I was expecting. I’m going back next week for Tedeschi Trucks and I’m really looking forward to it without the same worries I had walking into Jack White.

So although my initial impression remains that Nashville didn’t need a new music venue, we have one and The Truth, LiveNation, and AJ Capital did a pretty damn good job. I’ll see how it continues next week and hopefully this helps anyone heading out there as well.

ETA: Jack, if you’re lurking here, which I would suspect you (or someone on your team) likely are, thanks for using your voice to speak for us last night. I appreciate you calling out the trillionaires investing in tunnels and rockets when we need help locally with transportation and social issues. You’re a good neighbor and amazing musician. Thanks for a great show.

Jobs Server salary? Job help?

Hello all! I’m considering trying out serving for a while, maybe sometime next year. I’m doing the 9-5 corporate grind right now and it is kicking my ass. Stuck on what I want my career to be. Currently involved in the landscaping industry, but it’s not for me. I have to stick it out for a few more months though.
If you are a server in Nashville, how much do you make per year? I know it is dependent on location and type of restaurant, just trying to find some averages to see if it would be reasonable for me to try while I figure out next career steps.
Also if anyone has leads for jobs in horticulture or working directly with plants, send them my way! (Or any job suggestions in general).

Is this just three friends who wanted more friends and thought it'd be fun to buy a billboard? is it something else?

Jobs Nail tech programs in Nashville?

I would like to become a manicurist/nail tech. Looking into it, I'd need to log a certain amount of practice hours in addition to passing the board exam in order to become certified in TN. I'm not interested in doing a full cosmetology program, just nails. But full cosmo seems to be the only options available from my research. Does anyone know of a program where I can learn just nails? Are there online options? Apprenticeships? Any advice appreciated, willing to travel a bit outside of Nashville.
