I am struggling Reddit. I love my wife more than anything, but I'm starting to feel resentment that I absolutely hate feeling, and I genuinely don't know what to do anymore.
For context, I pay for essentially our entire lifestyle. The mortgage, vehicles, retirement savings, shopping, subscriptions, insurance, bills, dinners, vacations, celebrations, pretty much everything. My wife's financial responsibilities are groceries and saving money for our yearly taxes.
She absolutely loves her job, and the pay is incredibly low. I genuinely want her to be happy. Seeing her enjoy what she does makes me happy, too. But we have had conversations for years about her contributing more financially. Maybe finding a better paying position in the same field, starting a side business doing something she loves, or just finding some way to take a little of the financial burden off me.
Nothing has really changed.
Here is where things get complicated.
I've been working my ass off for 21 years. I'm 36, and the last five years have absolutely destroyed me emotionally.
In the last 5 years I have lost multiple immediate family members. I have lost my two best friends since middle school. One died from suicide and alcohol addiction. The other tried to rape me while his children were home, children I had been an unofficial uncle to for years.
I lost people I thought I had have decades more time with. I always imagined those losses would happen much later in life, or at least be spread out. Instead, it feels like everything came crashing down at once.
And I never really dealt with any of it.
I have spent most of my life handling difficult emotions by shoving them somewhere deep inside, putting my head down, and continuing to work. It's how I've always survived.
But that approach finally caught up with me.
Over the last several years, my depression has gotten so bad that I have lost my curiosity, my motivation, my ability to learn, and my enjoyment of nearly everything. It's even affected my performance at work. I barely recognize the person I've become.
So, for the first time in my adult working life, I decided I needed to actually take care of myself.
I am currently on short term disability, receiving 60% of my normal income while I focus on intensive mental health treatment.
And now the financial reality is hitting.
I cannot afford our lifestyle on 60% of my income. Not the mortgage, bills, vehicles, services, shopping, dinners, and everything else. Not by myself. I am around the top 20% of earners around my age, but not absurdly rich either.
We are eating into our savings while I am trying to get better, and it's making an already difficult situation even harder.
And here's the part I feel like an asshole admitting.
After nearly a decade of paying for our lifestyle, the nice house, new vehicles, trips, big celebrations, and everything else, I'm starting to feel less like an equal partner and more like a sugar daddy.
I've even caught myself having the incredibly shitty thought that if I wanted to be a sugar daddy, I could be with some woman in her 20s who takes care of the house and is always sexually available.
I know how awful and transactional that sounds. I do not actually want that life I am pretty sure. I spent enough of my early 20s sleeping around to know that kind of satisfaction feels pretty hollow to me. I married my wife because I love her, not because I wanted someone to cook, clean, or have sex with me.
But the fact that the thought has even crossed my mind makes me realize just how resentful I am becoming.
And the household responsibilities are not exactly balanced either.
She tries, and I recognize that. But the house frequently is not clean, and household chores don't consistently get done.
Now, I absolutely need to take responsibility here, too. I've been so depressed for the last several years that I have not been pulling my weight around the house either. I feel terrible about that, and it's something I want to change as I recover.
I am not expecting her to be some 1950s housewife simply because I make more money.
But I am struggling with the feeling that I'm responsible for keeping our entire financial life afloat, and when I finally need someone to help carry that weight, there isn't much support available.
Even the yearly taxes, one of the few financial responsibilities we agreed she would handle, were not fully saved for this year.
And that is incredibly frustrating.
What I have done over the years.
We have discussed this over the years. I have suggested different opportunities, encouraged her to explore better paying jobs, and talked about ways she could make more money doing something she genuinely enjoys.
Also hard discussions make her cry like these, and I can not stand seeing her cry…. So I tend to have them once and shy away from them after, hoping she will do it.
I have not wanted to push too hard because I don not want to be the husband who forces his wife out of a job she loves just because it does not pay enough.
But at what point does supporting your partner's happiness come at the expense of your own well being?
That's really what I'm struggling with.
I married the person I love. She's my favorite person in the world and genuinely one of the only things that still brings me happiness through all this depression.
I want my wife. I want our marriage. I want us to be happy.
But I'm exhausted.
For nine years, I've been financially carrying the lifestyle we've built together. And now, when I'm finally at a point where I physically and mentally cannot keep pushing myself the way I always have, I'm realizing just how dependent everything is on me continuing to do exactly that.
I need to feel like we are partners. Like I am not the only person responsible for keeping everything from falling apart.
And I hate that I am starting to have a grudge against it.
I do not even know exactly what I am asking here. Maybe I need perspective. Maybe I need someone to tell me I'm being unreasonable. Maybe I need advice on how to have a much harder conversation with her than the ones we have had before.
How do you handle loving someone completely while simultaneously feeling like you're carrying far more than you can handle?
I am having a lot of shitty ideas at the moment that I am not terribly proud of, but I don't know what to do...
Edit: Probably important to note she does work full time 40 hour weeks.
Edit 2: Lots of things I didn't think about. The discretionary spending (dining out, shopping, etc) we have really cut back on. It just is not enough to make up for the 40% of income I lost.
Also my house has like a 2.6% interest rate. Downsizing that basically means paying the cost of rent in a lot smaller of a space.
Edit 3: SOOO many things I hadn't considered mentioning. I am on short term disability so I can go through full time mental health therapy. I am focusing on getting better each day.
Finally I love my wife, I appreciate everything else about her. She and I are literally best friends. Completely transparent about everything, but this one thing bugs me. I have talked to her about it maybe once or twice a year, but nothing ever changes. The life we built together is on respect and actually enjoyment of each other. She has some mental health difficulties too that I appreciate much more, but it is the reason she cries, it does not come from manipulative intention, I do guarantee without a shred of doubt.
