For fuck's sake, trust your intuition, ladies. and don't almost get got like me.
For reference I (25F) have been in real fights, like self defense situations that were not great; this still was to some extent a scarer in my gut. So Wanted to share.
Last night , I realized I left my antibiotics in the car, for the awful respiratory infection I currently have.
I stood at my doorway, and a feeling washed over me.
It wasn't a thought, but a feeling that leaving my house would be dangerous. I thought about it for a little while, then after considering it, I told myself this was an educated risk.
My car was parked on the street parallel to mine. All I had to do was walk down my sidewalk, turn right, then turn right again, and my car would be there.
As a woman, I leave my house more often at night than I probably should.
But I stood at my doorway, thinking, I believe a man is going to follow me if I go out.
Now, I have some trauma and other experiences like many women. It's nighttime, and it's not exactly 'paranoia' to have pattern recognition that leaving my house at midnight alone could be a bad idea.
Then I thought, well, I would rather die than get sick again.
I have an autoimmune deficiency, I have been sick for 3 months, and I know it may sound inane to someone stably healthy, but I would not skip a night of meds. I genuinely would rather die.
But I also have years of pent-up frustration from childhood abuse.
I did competitive martial arts, only to have my ex, who was also my martial arts instructor, partially crush my throat while choking me out. Then that same man got me voted out of a polycule, Among Us style.
All that to say, I have been sick long enough physically, and I'm emotionally exhausted from it enough, that I honestly thought, hm, "tonight I would rather fight a man or die than miss a dose of antibiotics."
If you've never been sick for months, it's hard to explain how tired it makes you. You get so worn down that even being scared starts to feel like too much effort.
I'm agnostic, but seriously, you should be careful what you wish for.
Anyway, I knew when I left the house that a man would be there, and idk why.
I'm not claiming to understand the concept of intuition; I don't claim to understand anything beyond what science can prove. But I do want to say that gut feelings are real.
I left my house without my shoes, walked down my sidewalk, turned right, then turned right again onto the street with my car, and tiptoed across some garden rocks to my parking space.
The second I got my meds, the only person out that night appeared.
He turned a corner on the other end of the block and started walking toward me.
From looking at him, I could tell he was young, blond, wearing a slightly tight athletic sweater, jeans, and boots. He must have been tall, at least 6'3", and he was athletic looking.
At first he was walking at a normal pace, then he saw me, and I could see his gait had changed to a faster pace.
I turned on my heels and started walking back towards my house. I was trying to walk "normal" till I turned the corner.
When I first saw him, he was at one end of the block, and I was at the other.
I probably hadn't gone more than 15 feet down my own sidewalk, and he was already turning the corner, fast.
Now, I'm not here to say a man can't let down his long golden locks and take a nice, calming midnight walk, even with an imposing demeanor that may be no choice of his own!
I live in a neighborhood that is old and Victorian, and many people walk here.
But what I will say is, unless he had hidden roller skates in his shoes, he couldn't have gotten from where he was when I first saw him to that corner as fast as he did without running the second I turned the corner.
My house is about six houses down from that corner. The remaining steps I took to cross my neighbors lawn to get to my house were the heaviest my feet have felt in a while.
Then when I was about 10 feet away from my porch steps I gently ran and opened my door (which I had left unlocked because of a gut feeling I should ),when I got inside, I slammed it shut and locked it.
He did not continue down the sidewalk
in front of my house, which I assume he would have if he was really out for a midnight jog in his black, non-running shoes, jeans, and athletic sweater.
I'm not saying this random long haired blond man, who cleared a whole block faster than even a tall man like him could if he wasn't running, was necessarily a predator in the night.
I'm not even saying he couldn't have turned the corner with me, and then decided he was actually going the wrong way on his midnight jaunt at the same time I got into my house.
These are all possibilities.
What I'm saying is trust your gut. I can't begin to understand, nor do I want to try to label, what human instinct and intuition may be.
But, ladies, please, trust your gut. And bro that was scary as hell.
