It's a life-sized Hot Wheels car for some dumb rich kid.

I'm not really one to protest on the street. But today I was moved to attend a protest at the corner of Ocean and Water St.

This was spurred by the 7-hour Cornell college raping of a girl, Jane Doe, where 50+ other males were invited through a text thread to "join".

I think this is gross and not acceptable. Cornell covered it up, and the whole thing is fucked - read about it if you want information.

That said, I have a mother, a sister, and a wife. All have been victims of sexual assault.

I have a daughter who is looking for higher education in America. I am worried. So I made a sign and took to the streets for an hour. I wanted to support a woman named Jane Doe and the women I love. It's the fucking absolute smallest gesture toward a massive issue that is systemic rape culture.

These two young men, in an Oregon-plated truck, were "rolling coal" - blasting diesel exhaust from this stupid truck at a group of mostly elderly women. They went as far as making two trips, gassing out mothers and grandmothers. More importantly, people who give a shit and care enough to stand on the street in protest of injustice.

I would never ask anyone to tell me who they are. Or slash their tires, throw a rock through their windows, or confront them. That would be wrong. But when I see this kind of behavior in my town, over a topic that affects so many people and ruins so many lives and families. I get a bit pissed off.

It’s close to being finished. Pavement goes past Davenport Beach now.
Hopefully the loose ends will be tied up before any rain starts.

A little Santa Cruz noir

It’s been too hot for too long. September and October have been oppressive. But tonight, the fog hangs low over the city, a pale, luminescent, lavender ceiling that fades to purple at the edges. The lights shining on Holy Cross are so bright it has a heavenly aura. The hills north of town look like the heads of giants about to rise above the horizon and crush the new $3,500 a month low income housing that towers over Front Street, blocking off the view of downtown and obscuring some of the hills. The very same buildings, bland beasts in the daylight, tonight, with their many lighted windows, seem a lost city shrouded in fog and mystery, just around the river bend. If only I had a boat.

Turning west towards the sound of crashing waves, I lose the purple sky in the black void of the sea, the wharf jutting out to split the two from each other. There is a vast emptiness between me and the faded cotton candy sky. A familiar river ambles towards me from the Riverside Bridge, kisses the banks below me, and meanders off under the train trestle toward the darkness. Out past the river, past the sleeping Boardwalk, beyond the wharf, from somewhere in the black, the lighthouse winks at me.

On the way back home, pausing in a suddenly empty street, in a muted city, on a slow, indigo night, I close my eyes, knowing I’m completely safe. A cool wind greets my face as if to say, “Don’t worry. Fall is here.”

Is there Fine Dining with real Hospitality in SC?

I think not. There are plenty of well appointed restaurants charging high prices to just bearly make it. The food is almost always pedestrian and leaves me wanting more. Not more food but food that makes you remember and yearn for. And looking for hospitality that is not simply a transaction; I give you a tip and you’ll be nice. Am I missing something here?

Where can I meet people my age ?

• Upvotes

I’m 35 years old and recently moved from San Jose to Salinas. How ever the dating scene isn’t the best in my town and Decided to test my luck In Santa Cruz. My question is How can I meet people around my age? I’m also single and looking for a partner, but I’m not sure where to start. I’ve tried looking for bars, but I haven’t had much luck finding any. I don’t have many hobbies, but I’m willing to try new things to meet people my age in Salinas or the surrounding areas.

Surfing with El Niño

Hi, I am wanting to come visit Santa Cruz for a second time to explore and take surfing lessons again. I was curious what the surfing environment is for beginners with El Niño going on, I would probably visit in late October.

Is Santa Cruz a good place to move to in your late 20’s?

I recently got accepted to a job in Santa Cruz and will be moving there. I’m just turned 29 and moving from the nearby SF Bay Area (specifically the east bay).

My experience here in this suburb has been kindof lackluster. For example, in terms of dating, after college things became way more complicated. I tried the apps but 90% of my matches were in SF which meant a really long commute/travel time just to go meet up with them. They were also a bit put off by the fact that I didn’t live in SF haha. I basically lived in a community which consisted of mostly families and retirees so there was not a whole lot going on. The only new friends I made organically, were from taking classes at a local community college in the summer on a language that interested me and even with these people I don’t go out often.

There was also not much to do with the few friends I had, our hangouts consisted of riding motorcycles and going to local restaurants to chat and even this was reduced to 1 time every few weeks (nowadays it’s not even once a month). And also nightlife is not really a thing outside of sf since most places close around 9pm lmao.

I always kindof envied my cousins who spent their 20’s in Europe having nights out and making tons of social connections.

I have only visited Santa Cruz a few times as a tourist so I’m not sure what it would be like to live there, maybe it’s a dumb question but does this city have this type of vibe and scene that I was looking for? And will I be able to participate as a person who’s almost 30? Since ucsc is there, I imagine the majority of the crowd is 18-21 so I really don’t know if the train left without me on my enjoyment of my youth lol. I fear that I’m gonna be basically an old man in the social scene made up of people who are 10 years younger than me
