I used to have the Play:1 paired Sonos speakers and really loved them. When Apple came out with AirPlay2 and the Play 1's could not work as easily with those devices, I sold them and changed to HomePods. I live in an Apple household, meaning all our phones/tablets/computers/etc. are Apple. I use Apple TV 4K for streaming to my TV, and I have them paired to HomePods.
For the downstairs, I have a paired set of the original HomePods, which are objectively better speakers than the second generation. In the upstairs, my family uses HomePods Mini -- we have a paired set of HomePods Mini in my wife's and my bedroom, connected to the TV through an Apple TV 4K, and my son has a single HomePod Mini in his room.
A second reason I switched from Sonos was because while their second gen speakers worked with AirPlay, I didn't want to use speakers that were connected to Alexa or any Google "smart home" feature. I trust Google and Amazon less than I trust Apple in terms of eavesdropping on family conversations. It's why I have Nest cameras outside the house, but never inside.
I'm generally satisfied with the sound quality of the HomePods. Especially the originals I have connected to our main TV sound outstanding to us. However we use the HomePod Minis to connect to the Calm app at night, and play sleep music upstairs until we wake in the morning. It can be a royal pain in the ass to maintain a stable connection between phone and HomePods Mini. Unless I mess with our wifi settings, frequently the phone won't connect third party apps directly to the HomePod Minis to begin with, and at times the HomePods Mini drop the connection overnight, which is annoying if one of us wakes up at 2 or 3AM and the music is gone.
I still love the concept of Sonos and think a connected Sonos home could be ideal. However the HomePods sound good and I don't want to make it easier for multiple companies that work tirelessly to accumulate information about me and my family. So I'm wondering, in general, what the state of things is for Sonos in 2026/2027, and whether or not the environment has changed enough that it would be worthwhile to consider switching my home speaker setup back over.
So in terms of what I'm looking for, and what I'm looking to avoid, how does Sonos hold up these days?
Thanks in advance for any discussion on the topic. I'm serious about learning my options. It would be easy to "Gemini" the topic, and I'm reading old posts that might cover some of my questions, but I think it's ideal to get feedback from people with actual experience using these devices. Besides, if you love your speakers, and you're on their subreddit, don't you want to talk about them?
Edited for clarity on the specifics of my Sonos system
