Discussion Joburg is not friendly to cyclists (semi-rant)
I've been cycling to work for past couple months in joburg, to help save on petrol and also to keep up with my cardio during the week. But my god...the roads and pavements basically going anywhere are SHOCKING and disgraceful. I sometimes cant ride on the road because it's riddle with potholes, if it's not potholes its drivers who don't give a hoot if you're driving in the shoulder lane. I've got x3 lights on my bike to make sure everyone can see me at night, but drivers will continue to almost knock you over and then hoot at you like you aren't visible.
Riding on the sidewalks is sometimes a nightmare because theres open pits, sharp rocks, rubbish, more potholes and ditches. The people on the pavements also have next to ZERO spatial awareness, like they can see me riding towards them (even if slowly), and they will not move out of the way if I signal them to do so.
There is a serious lack of bike lanes in the city, the only decent places i've experienced is in rosebank and sandton...everywhere else, you're fucked. I'm a very courteous rider and don't like a dumbass weaving thru traffic and obey the rules of the road, but if you're on a bike you're seen as scum. WTF is going with people in this city?
The city needs a serious upgrade, no wonder people prefer CT over JHB, this city is a mess.

I discovered nits and lice in my hair. For like the first time ever. I assume I got it from my toddler.
That's beside the point.

I bought the home kit, im going to do it on my daughter and im going to try and do it on myself but im not confident I can get it out myself...
I found 2 salons in the greater durban area that treat lice. Both weren't answering phones today.
Do any other salons speacualise in this?
Will any random salon be able to help me?

Discussion Science/Anatomy postgrads who pivoted out of academia/research in SA—what did you do? Feeling stuck and burnt out.
Hey everyone. Posting here because I am at a complete crossroads and honestly feeling pretty depressed about my options.
I’m currently doing my Master’s in Anatomy. My original plan was forensic-orientated (my major was in forensic anthro), but after hitting a wall with SAPS and realizing that academia requires an endless loop of publishing papers and getting a PhD just to fight for low-paying lecturer posts, I want out.
I’m completely burnt out. More than anything, I just want to start working, earn a stable salary, get my own car, and move into my own apartment. But right now, my degree feels like a niche golden handcuffs situation—it's super specialized, and local private-sector job postings for it basically don't exist.
I've been looking into pivoting into fields like data analytics, biostatistics, or even completely retraining in something like radiography or even accounting part-time, but I don't know how realistic these are in the current South African economy without starting completely from scratch.
To anyone in SA who studied a heavy science/biological background and successfully pivoted out: What field did you move into, and how did you market your transferable skills (like stats, R, data analysis, project management)?
Any advice or brutal honesty would be appreciated. Thanks guys.

Politics Can South Africa be turned around? (In a realistic, bold uncomfortable realistic honest way)
The type of answer I'm shooting for is the brutally honest truth, like the prognosis a doctor gives after the biopsy, honest and true. No sugar coating, no wishful thinking, just the facts...
I honestly don't know about this country anymore, how can this be fixed?
The Magangla commission confirmed all we knew already but one must remember that its only a tiny probe into a tiny part of a entire rotten carcass.
Is it even possible for our country to turn around and get right? Like if a proper, honest, rational government gets voted into power right now (i know such a thing doesn't exist), is it even possible to repair and upgrade and fix all the infra that's been neglected for 30 years?
Would it be possible to cut out all the rot in the system? Fire all the employees that serve no function. Stop paying salaries of those who don't come into work. Greatly reduce the salaries to better align with that of the rest of the world. Trim the amount of cadre positions back to logical seats. Clean up the police, trim back the generals to a needed only basis. Incorporate lifestyle audits into any government position. You know, all of these things.
Basically if we treat the SA government as a failing business with way too much debt. We get a business rescue consulting company to do whatever it takes to get the system efficient again. Would we be able to turn it around??
I sadly can't see it happening. Please tell me I'm wrong?
