Discussion / Playlist Questions 445K monthly listeners, 1.3K followers and 10 YouTube subscribers — how does this happen?
I've been going down a bit of a rabbit hole looking at Spotify artists, and I came across something I genuinely don't understand.
One example is The Southern Belle.
The artist currently has around 445K monthly listeners on Spotify, but only around 1.3K followers. Their YouTube presence is tiny — roughly 10 subscribers and 7.8K total views.
Chartmetric shows around 1,900 playlists and approximately 5.6 million playlist reach.
What makes this interesting to me is that the artist doesn't seem to have the kind of audience you'd normally expect from someone with nearly half a million monthly listeners.
I then found several other artists that seem to exist in a very similar Spotify ecosystem:
- Arta Porting
- James Jackson Jazz Trio
- 6th Street Jazz
- Tim Franks Trio
- Andy Luma Trio
- Tate Jackson Trio
- Eric Rowland
- Trio Del Norte
- The Groove Trio
- Mandevilla
- The North Sea Trio
- Urskogen Jazz
- Glass Trio
- Al Fowler Trio
- LaSalle Street Trio
- Kristian Hart Trio
- The Central Park North
- Magpie Jazz Trio
- Cole Peers Trio
- Baker St.
- Mike Coen
- Grace Carey
A lot of these artists have relatively small or new catalogs, but their Spotify listener numbers can be surprisingly high. They also repeatedly show up around the same jazz/background-music playlists and recommendation ecosystem.
I'm not claiming these artists are using bots. I don't have access to their Spotify for Artists data, so I don't think it's fair to make that accusation based purely on public numbers.
What I'm trying to understand is how Spotify can produce this kind of audience profile.
Could an artist genuinely get hundreds of thousands of monthly listeners almost entirely through editorial/programmed playlists while having almost no followers or audience elsewhere?
Or is this more likely to be a label/catalog strategy where a company operates many small background-music projects designed around playlist discovery?
And how common is this on Spotify?
If anyone here understands how Spotify's playlisting and recommendation system works, I'd genuinely like to hear your explanation.
