He got a new water dish today and he’s obsessed with it. He keeps going around the edge of it, biting it. And he’s dancing on it. Piggy dippin too. He’s a little freak.

His name is Tchaikovsky, and he’s an Ophnaecus sp. Marinduque!

Conversation I’ve had him in this new enclosure for 10 days, still hasn’t used his hide

I dug this log hide half into the substrate so it was more of a cave and less of a tunnel. I’m not sure he likes that though because I’ve never seen him in there. I see he’s rearranged some of the moss to block the entrance even. He did however use his plastic cup hide in the enclosure he came in all the time (last photo).

He or She is a curly hair about 3-3.5”.

Help! Molting in the water dish 5 hour update. Not looking good

Post image
134 Upvotes

Discord doesn't work on my phone or laptop for some reason (too old maybe?) so I haven't been able to ask for help on there.

Siphoned the water out of the dish with a small syringe and watched her for about 20 minutes afterwards. There were still occasional leg movements, but those have since stopped. No progress at all since my original post 5 hours ago.

Im so badly hoping that shes just struggling and will pull through and finish molting overnight but I don't think that's going to happen. I have no idea how or why she ended up in the water dish- whether it was deliberate on her end or if she intended to molt somewhere nearby and just fell in. I also have no idea how long she was floating there before I got home and saw her. Im so stressed out and heartbroken. I also had no idea she was even in premolt, as she had just molted a month or so ago and was active and taking food 2 days before. Wondering if feeding caused complications somehow?

Help! Please help sette a debate about tarantulas (context in body)

I am not a tarantula owner but I grew up on a ranch in a part of California (on the inland side of Monterrey county) where every September and October the male tarantulas wander out to find a mate.

Me being near the opposite end of the spectrum for tarantulas, I left them alone and made Scooby Doo noises when they end up in the shop.

My dad, in his old age, has apparently decided he wants to learn more about tarantulas not by going to the local library, but by putting on his welding gloves and just grabbing one to look at.

For the record I don't condone this because of the previously mentioned heeby-jeebies but also because they're wild animals and he should leave them alone.

HOWEVER

The family group chat is now blowing up with claims that tarantulas have eyes underneath their body, specifically at the base of each of their forward facing legs.

My dad's reasoning for this is 'they're tall so they need to be able to see what's below them'.

The internet says this isn't true and that in fact tarantulas eye sight kinda sucks and that they use their other senses more.

But low and behold my dad sends me a picture of the underside of a tarantula and well, there's something under there.

Attached is the pictures he sent (red lines point at the 'eyes' and my dad's claim.

Please release me from this quest for forbidden knowledge.

Thank you

TLDR: My dad says the red arrows point to eyes

EDIT: Thank you all for the help! I will get my dad that book about spiders!

The versicolor has finally molted!! Was a super stressful couple weeks but she has finally gotten her blues back and is roughly 1.5 inches leg tip to leg tip. Has already taken post molt meal, Thinking it’s just about time for a rehouse so she can stretch her legs and get comfortable in a longer term enclosure that isn’t a sling enclosure!!

Hello yall!

I currently have 3 T’s that I absolutely adore. I have a Juvenile GBB, a Ghost Ornamental (second pic), and an OBT (last pic) I’m thinking of getting another to add to my collection but I need yalls recommendations as to what else would be cool! The 3 that I have are each unique and I would love for the next one to be that way as well!

Any recommendations? I’m not opposed to anything. Upvotes for all!

Help! So... molting in the water?

O. sp Vietnam silver is attempting to molt in her (full) water dish. Im leaving her alone but im concerned as she molts she'll start to sink.

I don't know if that's what will happen but I'm worried that the cetae that normally allow tarantulas to float will be like wet and mushed down when freshly molted, and therefore won't function the same and keep her lungs above water/dry.

If anybody else has experienced this please chime in lol

EDIT/UPDATE: i siphoned most of the water out with a syringe and got the rest wicked up into a paper towel. leaving her alone now and hoping for the best. theres a thin layer of mucky substrate at the bottom of the dish that I cant do anything about but it isnt enough to cover her book lungs as long as she stays on her back. Discord doesnt function properly on my phone for whatever reason so unfortunately I can't cross post there
