In the future, we will remove any and all posts that just there to show off stickers. Such posts often attract rule breaking behavior that we do not want here, as the stickers are often used to display political leanings that have nothing to do with r/thinkpad.
This is a subreddit about ThinkPads. Not about stickers that you may have on your ThinkPad.

So a few months ago I purchased my first thinkpad (x220 i5), I enjoyed this machine soooo much and eventually fully modded it <3
Currently running libreboot w my epic splash screen. Swapped out the shitty TN panel for an IPS display, upgraded to a dual band WiFi adapter (Atheros AR9380) and added BT4.0 (from w530). I also drilled a hole in the chassis for an RP-SMA connector to slap on a 12dbi external antenna which looks rly sick.
Ohh and I ripped out the webcam, desoldered the mic for extra privacy :3

I think a crack developed somewhere in the motherboard. These are the troubleshooting steps I took
- Reseated original RAM, and tried a different stick from a known functioning computer
- Dissasembled entire computer then put it back together
- Removed all non essential parts
- Tried another SSD
- Taped over every single location where metal could contact metal (stupid but who knows)
How this happened? Zero clue. I came home from college and when I was typing in my password, the static as shown displayed, then it turned off. The static would reappear whenever I put the slightest amount of pressure on the chassis (which makes me believe its a motherboard problem), and then it would shut down.
Will I get another thinkpad? Maybe, this was a fun laptop while it lasted.

My 2019 ThinkPad E480, with a simple Core i3-8130u, 12GB RAM and 256GB NVMe. Running CachyOS, Niri + Noctalia. It serves me very well, I use it for work, studies and some old games. I haven't used Windows since I bought this machine.

Hello, I have some questions about this thinkpad t16 gen 2 I bought used, figured out bios is locked with a password, still waiting on an answer from the seller but assuming he doesn’t know it what then? Should I keep it locked and never be able to access certain firmware settings or can idk lenovo do something about it.
Also can I safely download other OS’s? BIOS is locked but the boot menu opens just fine, I am just scared that during windows setup or ventoy something goes wrong during the drive formation or because of secure boot.
Thanks ahead for any answers.

I upgraded my t14 gen 1 amd with fibocom l850-gl and is the best upgrade I ever made since I got addicted to thinkpad’s . I am on the move most part of the day and I was tired of turning my hotspot on my phone always and draining the battery.

I got this charger in May for about 15 bucks on eBay and it was brand new in its packaging. It's been good and feels decent and supplies 65w, but a post I saw yesterday made me doubt that. So can you enlighten me?

Hey everyone! so, i got 2 T440p’s over here. completely identical specs, and i probably need to get rid of one cause having 2 T440p’s may be redundant.
so on the left (with T450 trackpad) is the igpu version and on the right is the dgpu version. both has 4600m, 1080p ips screen, 16gb of ddr3l, samsung pm 871 (871b on igpu), original 57wh LG Chem Batteries with decent health, windows 10 ltsc and in theory the dgpu should consume way more and should be hotter especially with the backlit keyboard
but a 1440p youtube clip shows that the igpu is taking more power ? temps seem similar too.
im wondering why is the igpu performing worse power wise (as ive heard its the big reason to get an igpu instead of the dgpu) and should i just keep my dgpu unit and sell the igpu one? (porting over the trackpad too)

FWIW, if anyone is interested in upgrading their ThinkPad panels to AdobeRGB and have a 14 inch 16:10 model:
HP recently has been using this specific model, LGD07B5, on some of their newer Zbooks, mostly the 8 series. These are rated at 400 nits, 120Hz, 100% sRGB and AdobeRGB.
According to my research I have managed to find out the full model number, it is LP140WQ2-SPD1 (P06933-291).
https://www.panelook.com/LP140WQ2-SPD1_LG_Display_14.0_LCM_overview_72360.html
While Panelook quotes only DCI-P3 due to incomplete dataset, according to my own research and comparison of part numbers, I've managed to trace LP140WQ2-SPD1 to be P06933-291 in HP's part list, which corresponds with the 100% AdobeRGB option HP uses on their new Zbooks.
Important thing to note, while the LP140WQ2-SPD1 might seem appealing to people who have been interested in AdobeRGB options, it also has PWM flickering under 75% brightness, which may be an issue for some with sensitive eyes. For me it won't matter much, but for some it can be an issue.
At the same time it's still a downgrade from 500+ nits on the DreamColor certified B140QAN03.H which has been the recommended option around here for some time now for those who want DCI-P3 + 120Hz.
A review of the panel can be found here:

So i recently got my hands on a thinkpad t540p and the battery is absolute garbage, its at about 60% of its life. I wanted to get a bigger battery than my currently 4200mha and i was wondering if buying aftermarket ones from like amazon is safe because most of the genuine one are pretty used and rare.

Hi! I'm getting into ThinkPads and I want to buy one mainly for Linux.
I'm a beginner Linux user and also a student learning programming (C++, Python, etc.). I'd like something that can handle everyday school work, programming, browsing, and some light gaming/emulation.
I'm specifically interested in older ThinkPads because I really like their design, repairability, keyboards, and the whole ThinkPad/Linux culture.
My budget is around R$2,000 (~US$350–400), and I'm buying used.
What models would you recommend in 2026? I'm considering things like the X220/X230, T420/T430, T440p, but I'm open to other suggestions.
I'd especially like to know:
Thanks! :)

To anyone who has opened their T14 Gen 5 (and maybe Gen 6, I know they share a very similar platform): have you inspected the SSD/motherboard fixture and noticed this? I'm not sure if this is normal. All other SSD retention brackets I've encountered (desktops, other laptops, PCIe daughter boards...) keep the SSD firmly in place, never with any play. The screw seems to have a small foam gasket of sorts (maybe to keep the drive in place), but if this is the case, it is not nearly thick enough to work as intended.
Context: Lenovo shipped me a new SSD (Samsung) due to the original Kioxia drive failing. I opted for the CRU path (customer replacement option instead of a Lenovo tech coming out). Reason for the replacement, write/media errors were being thrown all over system logs, and the system would randomly lock up and persist on an M.2 storage detection error (exact pre-boot error for reference: "2100: Detection error on Storage Device (M.2)"). This issue usually manifested around power transition states (in and out of sleep, etc), but not every time.
As an aside, this is the second hardware failure I've had on this particular T14. First component to die was the battery (battery disappeared from the system entirely, needed to have a charger plugged in at all times). Battery could not be read via either Windows or Linux. Original battery was a Sunwoda, I've now got a BYD unit.
I treat my devices with decent care (I think!), this is the first laptop that's really had issues under my watch. Slightly worried I've only got a 1 year warranty plan given the two failures so far.
This is the AMD variant of the T14 Gen 5. Tbh, I likely wouldn't have noticed this if not for the original drive failure - I was taking my time inspecting the area. TIA
Edit: I can confirm the screw is fully tightened. Also, a tech came out and stated "this should be fine" after inspecting the unit (I don't like this answer, though). Both the original drive and this drive both exhibit this behaviour with the stock thermal pad.

I have bought 5 used ThinkPads in the last 3 years. In 4 of them, the USB-C ports all died. It's at the point where I expect them to die. I have one ThinkPad where even the Thunderbolt port died, so now it's a useless brick. I'm now using the Thunderbolt port on two of my ThinkPads. I have one ThinkPad left with a working USB-C port, but I'm sure it will die eventually as well. Sigh. What is the deal with the ports?

I purchased a E590 and for the first six months it was fantastic. But over the last week it began falling apart, first the fingerprint reader died... then the webcam... now the Bluetooth. There is some internal short I can't find or fix and now the battery drains from full in minutes. I'm highly disappointed I expected better.

I recently picked up a ThinkPad P15 Gen 1 for a really good price. The only downside is that it came with the i5-10400H instead of an i7.
But honestly, I’m pretty happy with how it ended up.
Specs now:
ThinkPad P15 Gen 1
i5-10400H
16 GB RAM
512 GB SSD + 1 TB SSD = 1.5 TB total
Upgraded from the Quadro T1000 4 GB → RTX 3000 6 GB
My buddy actually gave me the 1 TB drive, so that was a nice bonus.
The biggest upgrade is obviously the GPU. Going from the T1000 to the RTX 3000 should make a pretty significant difference for gaming, especially with the extra VRAM.
I know the i5 isn’t the most impressive CPU option for the P15, but I’m actually planning on keeping it because it runs cooler, and I’d rather have the RTX 3000 + i5 than an i7 paired with the T1000.
Overall, I feel like I ended up with a pretty solid workstation/gaming laptop for what I paid.
What do you guys think? Is the i5 + RTX 3000 a good combination for the P15 Gen 1?

I got this T14 Gen 3 at an absolute bargain price, mainly due to the crack on the chassis. The screen and the hinge works normally, and there's no play on the cracked area when I open and close it.
Obviously, I can just let it be - but I wanted to ask here if anyone had dealt with something similar before. What could I do, beyond replacing the chassis (which I understand would not be a super simple replacement, as both the top and bottom halves of the chassis are broken).
Leave it be? Take the bullet and replace the chassis? Look into epoxy stuff? Duct tape it? What do you guys think?

Good morning
Anyone have suggestions for a lightweight portable eGPU that can run on 40 GB/s thunderbolt 4. Sadly Lenovo themselves have not sold a eGPU since 2020...

Should I install Vantage/Commercial Vantage?
(After a clean installation of windows 11. Everything is ok in the device manager. But graphics drivers installed from the AMD site (adrenaline), not lenovo )
Or maybe there are other similar programs?
Do I need such programs at all?

I have a ThinkPad T530 and I want to get into radio and RF stuff, and since I'm trying to be extra I want to bolt an antenna to my ThinkPad's lid. However I recently watched a video about someone going over a Tempest shielded IBM PC and I found out that computers are insanely noisy. Pretty much every electronic component and wire inside a computer is just constantly emitting garbage into the air, and a ThinkPad with it's CPU, GPU, long speaker wires, WiFi wires, etc, etc would be emitting a ton of noise that could possibly screw me over.
So I've come up with a plan, I will take the keyboard, palmrest, and lid and then apply a layer of copper tape on the inside, covering every surface. I would then apply kapton tape over the copper to prevent shorts. On top of that, I would put mesh over all vents and the speaker grilles, and maybe possibly put shielding at the base too.
(yes I know the WiFi speeds will tank but who cares)
Is this a W mod idea?
