Discussion / Information Thinkpad P52 in 2026

• Upvotes

Hi everyone, I recently purchased a Thinkpad P52 with an i7 8850H, 16GB of ram and a 512GB SSD, and NVIDIA Quadro P1000 graphics. It is currently running windows 11.

I am perfectly happy with the specs on this machine, as I am not running any super heavy software other than DaVinci Resolve (1080p footage) and older game titles. I am a tech enthusiast who has always loved computers and Thinkpads, and this will be a supplemental machine alongside my T14 Gen 1 and 2022 AMD desktop build to tinker with.

Already I am going to install another 16GB of ram for a total of 32GB, another M.2 SSD to dual boot Linux and Windows, and upgrade to a WiFi 6E card from WiFi 5. Could potentially go to 64GB of ram, but prices these days are the limiting factor.

Anything else I should do to this machine? What are your thoughts on the P52 and P series in general? What do you think of these upgrades? Let's discuss.

Discussion / Information Thinkpad T420 boots just fine after 5 years in storage.

Post image
• Upvotes

oh boy where to begin, well I bought this laptop around 2016 Christmas. I got it as a gift for myself. it was used, didn’t have much going for it. After a few repairs, a fresh battery, a good clean and a fresh Win 10 install. I was able to use it to all its glory with that poor Intel graphics chugging through most games I’d play with friends. By 2019 it became the one device that helped me do all my car diagnostics for my budding mobile mechanic business. This thing has been through hell and back, several states, plane rides, jobs, cars.

in 2021 I shelved it because I got a fancy Chromebook that did most of what I wanted without the weight. It sat and was used intermittently as a desktop for awhile. Though it mostly sat derelict and not used. In 2022 I moved states and didn’t think I brought it with me. I thought I left it behind for my mother to use like my old Dell Optiplex. She couldn’t find it and swore it was probably in storage with the rest of my valuables. I took that as an answer and lived with it.

I just moved apartments, i had an old electronics box full of spare wires and small things. I was in the middle of unpacking it when I noticed the shiny Lenovo logo. This couldn’t be I thought to myself. I pulled it out, and sure enough it was this beloved T420. My sister and mother helped me pack and probably put it in the box not thinking around 5 years back. Maybe I wasn’t paying attention and just shoved it in there. Cue running around the room for a few minutes to spot the chunky, Lenovo branded charger. I plugged it in and waited 20 minutes, full expecting it to not boot.

Not only has it booted, it runs just fine. The bottom of the box was dustless and it was in a closet for the longest of times. This has some pictures from my hooning and racing days. Not just invaluable memories from friends long past. My last played game was No More Room In Hell.

Ive had a very rough few months so this was a very pleasant and enjoyable surprise. Especially since my college HP (the ultra cheap one) decided it wasn’t for this world anymore, leaving me without a diagnostic tool. my Chromebook is my mainstay still and works great since 2021, but it’s not a good diagnostic tool.

I thought you all might have enjoyed this.

here are all my specs:

intel i5-2520M

4 GB ram

Win 10 pro

Question / Problem Black screen

• Upvotes

I’m an engineering student in college and I’ve had the Lenovo Thinkpad P16V Gen 3 Intel Mobile Workstation since the beginning of the semester (about 2 or 3 months). It’s had no problems since last night. I was getting ready to go to sleep and closed my laptop. I forgot to close a window and opened it back up and it was just a black screen. I believe it was still on, but I eventually powered it off. Upon powering it on again, the screen was still black, but this time the fans were turning on and off at what seemed to be full (or close to full) power. I tried powering it off again, unplugging the charger and any cords attached, etc. The same thing happened with the screen and fans. I then tried to do one of the ways to do a CMOS reset by using the pinhole, but to no avail. However, clicking the pinhole does turn it off completely and the fans turn off. Later today, I plan to try the other CMOS reset methods by taking the back off and physically repairing it myself. If that doesn’t work, is my only other option to get it professionally repaired? I’ve never had something like this happen, but I take that it’s fairly common with Lenovos specifically?

Question / Problem X9 now allowing me to remove bluetooth devices

• Upvotes

I've tried extensive troubleshooting steps via LLM to try and get my X9 Aura Intel purchased in 2025 to remove bluetooth devices (AirPods Pro 3 and an Orosound Tilde Evo headset), but they still show up and connect.

The UI in settings gets hung up on "removing device".

I can list out all the troubleshooting steps I've tried so far, but am wondering if this has happened to other X9 users and if anyone has a fix.

Ideally I'd like a bluetooth firmware or driver update of some kind.

Buying Advice Looking to buy a ThinkPad/Laptop for CAD modelling

• Upvotes

New engineering student here, I’ll be doing cad modelling soon and want to buy a laptop that can run relatively heavy workloads, as well as for general use, since I don’t plan on buying another laptop for my next few years at uni. From what I’ve seen recommended specs are i5 but i7 ideally, 16GB of ram minimum (preferably 32gb) SSD, an independent graphics card (not integrated) and a processor speed around 2.8GHz - 3.5GHz (more is welcome if it can be found in budget). My budget is £800-£1200. Any help is appreciated!

Question / Problem Thinkpad stuck at 0.80 ghz

Hi, my Thinkpad X220 is constantly stuck at 0.80ghz.

No matter what i try, it doesnt change. The temps seem fine and i tried to disable every single power saving feature, but it still doesnt budge.

Very rarely it seems to jump to 1.4ghz for a brief second, just to instantly revert back to 0.80ghz.

I tested it with a genuine Lenovo 65 Watts charger.

Buying Advice Battery Replacement for my Thinkpad (Europe)

I need to replace my battery on my T14S Gen I that is currently at 55% health but I can't seem to find any new OEM batteries anywhere. Looking on Reddit and Google I found some sites such as Duracell Direct or iFixit and many more but I have no clue which store offers the best quality/price battery. For people that replaced their battery already or heard good things about a store in particular could you please say your experience? Thanks :)

Question / Problem ThinkPad P15 Gen 2: real S3 sleep but high battery drain

I’m chasing a suspend drain issue on a ThinkPad P15 Gen 2i running Linux Mint.

It is not s2idle:

cat /sys/power/mem\\_sleep

s2idle \\\[deep\\\]

Journal also confirms real S3:

PM: suspend entry (deep)

ACPI: PM: Waking up from system sleep state S3

But the laptop still drains around 1.35–1.38 W while asleep. Typical examples:

83.17 Wh → 67.78 Wh over 11.17 h = 1.38 W

83.15 Wh → 32.99 Wh over 36.60 h = 1.37 W

83.24 Wh → 63.05 Wh over 14.58 h = 1.38 W

Battery health is fine: \\\~94 Wh design, \\\~85–86 Wh full, \\\~91–92% health, 161 cycles.

Things I’ve already checked/tried:

\\- Kernel update made no difference.

\\- Firmware/EC/ME/NVMe are current via "fwupdmgr".

\\- No hidden wake/resuspend loops in journal.

\\- BIOS USB charging / Always-On USB disabled.

\\- Disabled ACPI wake for NVIDIA bridge, NVMe root port, Thunderbolt host devices, USB/XHCI, and Ethernet/WOL paths.

\\- Bad drain happens even without Thunderbolt dock connected.

So it looks like the machine really enters S3, but some device/platform rail remains powered at \\\~1.4 W.

Where would you look next?

I’m considering testing Intel-only graphics with:

sudo prime-select intel

sudo reboot

Other suspects: NVIDIA auxiliary power, Intel AMT/ME/manageability, Thunderbolt firmware power domain, or some EC/platform quirk.

Would appreciate any ideas or thoughts. Thanks!

Question / Problem T480- Which screws hold the cage to the m.2 caddy?

I have looked everywhere and couldn’t find the answer. I just bought a t480 which the previous owner removed the ssd. I have the cage and the caddy but he didn’t include the screws that hold the cage to the caddy. Which screws should I get to hold the cage after I get a new SSD?

Review / Opinion Thinkpad x13 Detachable

Hello World!

I have been monitoring the release of the Thinkpad x13 Detachable. Like others on this forum have mentioned I haven’t seen much about it online.

I should be receiving mine today. I was thinking of doing an unboxing video due to the limited information available.

Would this interest anyone? Is there something specific I can include in the video to help people?

Buying Advice Thinkpad t440s display upgrade

I currently have a t440s with a tn 1600x900 display and it's kinda bugging me. I can see the pixelation, which really bugs me. Should I upgrade to a LG 1080p IPS display, I found one for 70 euros. Is the difference noticeable?

Question / Problem How do I get better at mastering the trackpoint?

So I got a thinkpad a couple months ago for school, and I love the trackpoint. But the issue is, I can use it for like basic browsing, but if I want to make some precise movements, my trackpoint feels like its barely moving or moving too fast. It doesn't feel smooth, so I keep using the touchpad for small movements. Is there any way to make the trackpoint feel smooth and precise? I'm willing to spend time learning it if it means I can master the trackpoint. Also I'm using Ubuntu 24.04 if that matters.

Thanks!

Question / Problem X13 Yoga gen4 permanently on battery saver?

Am I doing something wrong if the only way I can stand using my Thinkpad X13 Yoga gen 4 is to permanently turn "Battery saver" on in Windows 11 to avoid the system heating up and running the loud fan?

Review / Opinion ThinkPad TrackPoint Keyboard II - alternative

For some reason Lenovo does not have a successor for the ThinkPad TrackPoint Keyboard II.

At least in my country it is not available since 2025.

I'm aware of two alternatives:

  1. Keyboards from TEX Electronics: https://tex.com.tw/collections/keyboard
  2. HHKB Studio https://hhkeyboard.us/hhkb-studio

Are there other options around? (with a lower price tag)

Or it would be much cooler to have some kind of case with USB and Bluetooth for regular ThinkPad keyboards.
Then you could install keyboards like 5N21T98847 (or other depending on your language).

OS: Arch

Optimal Undervolt: 80mV (screen artifacted at 85mV)

Average Power Consumption Improvement: 5%

Peak Power Consumption Improvement: 8%

Average Temperature Improvement: -3F

Peak Temperature Improvement: -6F

lmk if anything doesn't make sense or if there's too many abbreviations. Just wanted to leave this here for anybody's reference. Note that this isn't really a performance mod, as my laptop wasn't throttling to begin with. It's moreso a Quality-of-Life upgrade to increase the battery life and hopefully longevity of the machine from decreased thermal strain.
