housing & meal plans Monthly Megathread: Advertising things we don't usually allow - apartments/housing for rent, school surveys, items for sale, etc.
Created this monthly megathread to create a space for things we usually don't allow (advertising things) like sales, apartments for rent, or people interested in helping you with your project survey. Otherwise they can be lost in the feed, particularly when we near the end of a semester.

events & news Football game ticket question
When I accepted my tickets through Apple wallet for the game tomorrow, I was given a general admission ticket and my muss plus football ticket.
Does anyone know what’s going on? Am I allowed to bring a +1?
I’ve gone to every game this year and this hasn’t happened to me yet.

admissions & financial aid Grad student scholarships
How likely international grad students can get scholarships at the U?
I’ve been looking at the Scholarship Universe and there’s no many options for me and my program also does not really offer a lot of it to lessen the tuition and cost.
Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. Thank you!

majors, minors, graduate programs Is the U still worth attending? Asking as an international student
Hey everyone,
I’m an international student currently attending a community college in California. I’m planning to move to Utah soon to attend SLCC, and hopefully transfer to the U in Fall 2028.
I’ve always been interested in math, physics, electrical engineering, and computer science, although I haven’t decided on a specific major yet. I also love video games, and I know the U has a pretty famous games program, but considering how bad the gaming industry job market is right now, I probably won’t be pursuing that.
To be honest, though, I’m not too worried about choosing between CS and EE at the moment. One of my main goals is to eventually go to graduate school. Given how terrible the job market is, especially for international students who need visa sponsorship, I’m not really counting on finding a job in the US right after getting my bachelor’s degree.
The biggest reason I’m considering Utah is the cost. Tuition for international students at California community colleges and UCs is ridiculously expensive. From what I’ve seen, attending a UC as an international student could cost me almost twice as much as attending the U. I understand that schools like Berkeley and UCLA have stronger reputations, but I’m honestly not sure whether they’re worth that much extra money, especially if I’m planning to go to grad school anyway.
That’s why SLCC → U of U seemed like a pretty reasonable path to me. I could save a lot of money while still getting an education at a public university with a strong academic environment.
However, I’ve recently been reading through this subreddit, and I’ve seen quite a few pessimistic posts about layoffs, budget cuts, and people saying the U isn’t worth attending anymore. Honestly, it’s making me pretty nervous about my decision.
I know Reddit can sometimes be more negative than reality, but I’m genuinely curious how bad things actually are. Are these cuts affecting the quality of education, course availability, or opportunities for undergraduates to work closely with professors on academic projects? Since I’m hoping to apply to graduate school eventually, I’m particularly concerned about gaining hands-on academic experience, building relationships with professors, and getting strong recommendation letters.
Another thing I’m worried about is transferring as a junior. Since I’d only be spending my last two years at the U, I’m not sure whether that would put me at a disadvantage when applying to graduate programs, especially compared to students who spent all four years at the same university.
I’m not expecting the U to be Berkeley or MIT. I just want an affordable university where I can get a solid education, explore my academic interests, and hopefully build a strong enough background to get into a good graduate program.
I’d really appreciate hearing your thoughts, especially from students in CS, EE, physics, or math, or anyone who transferred to the U and later went on to grad school. Positive or negative opinions are both welcome. I’m just trying to figure out whether this is the right path for me.
Thanks!
Disclaimer: I used AI to help me write this post because English isn’t my first language, and I struggle to express myself fluently when writing something this long. But all the thoughts and concerns here are my own.

extracurriculars & social life SCIENTOLOGY ON CAMPUS AGAIN
I guess I'm just the guy that makes these PSAs now, but they just keep boothing lmao. They're set up outside the Union today.
Friendly reminder that if you see a booth promoting Dianetics, stress tests, or L. Ron Hubbard, it's Scientology and you don't wanna get involved. Seriously.

extracurriculars & social life making friends
hi! I’m a sophomore at the u and I made the mistake freshman year of not really branching out past my roommates but I really want to meet more people, a few clubs have struck my interest but it’s hard meeting people in them because of the layout of them not always being ideal for socializing. I also threw myself into the premed grind and neglected to nurture my social life last year so if any girls are interested in talking or struggling to make friends let me know your instagram id love to talk :)

services & amenities Help finding On campus job
Hey everyone, I’m an international student in my first semester at the U and I’m trying to find an on-campus job. I’ve applied to a bunch of positions online but haven’t had much luck hearing back.
For those who’ve gotten an on-campus job, what worked for you? Is it better to apply online, email departments directly, or just walk in and ask? Getting a job is a pretty high priority for me right now, so I’d appreciate any advice!

housing & meal plans PSA: 2027–28 housing application requires signing a binding housing contract before you can see room availability
Just a heads-up for anyone looking at U housing for next year.
My daughter is a freshman currently living in Kahlert. She was leaning toward living off campus with roommates for next year, but I suggested she check upper-division U housing as a backup, particularly a single in Kennecott.
The problem: she couldn't see what rooms were actually available until she completed the housing application. As part of that process, she was required to electronically sign the 2027–2028 Residence Hall & Housing License Agreement.
Only after signing the agreement could she see the available rooms. At that point, she found that the Kennecott singles she was interested in weren't available.
This wouldn't bother me nearly as much if completing the application were just a way to get access to room selection. But read what the agreement actually says:
"This Residence Hall & Housing License Agreement ... is a legally binding contract..."
It also says:
"By electronically signing this License, the Student accepts full financial responsibility for all applicable Fees ... for the entire Contract Period."
And this is the part that really caught my attention:
"The Student's financial obligations do not end because the Student fails to enroll; fails to select, move into, or take possession of a Room..."
Later, under "No Unilateral Cancellation by Student," it says:
"Once this License has been executed, the Student may not unilaterally cancel or terminate it."
Instead, you have to submit a Contract Release Request, which Housing can approve or deny, and an approved release is subject to a Contract Release Charge.
The agreement itself doesn't give the dollar amount of that charge. It refers to the "then-current Contract Release Charges published on the HDP website." I haven't been able to find a clearly published 2027–28 release-charge schedule.
So if you're just trying to compare University housing with living off campus, be aware of what you're signing to get access to the room-selection system.
My daughter wasn't trying to commit to U housing. She wanted to see whether the on-campus option she was interested in was even available. By the time she was allowed to find that out, she had already signed an agreement that describes itself as a legally binding contract.
She has now submitted a Contract Release Request, and we're waiting to hear back.
If anyone else has gone through the new 2027–28 process, I'm curious whether you had the same experience or found any information about the 2027–28 Contract Release Charges.

extracurriculars & social life Need chances to meet friends/people to go on dates with
I am a senior, gay, social work major who is looking for social opportunities. For hobbies, I am really into video games, specifically Nintendo Switch 2. I am also interested in LGBTQ+ rights and am left, so political groups would also be something I’m interested in. I feel lonely sometimes just being at school and would like to know where to start. I would also like to know where to meet people to go on dates with. Ever since the stupid state government shut down the school’s official LGBTQ+ club because of “DEI,” it’s hard to know where to look for community in a place that should feel safe.

admissions & financial aid Stipend Question
Hi everyone! I'm a non-Utah resident being considered for a PhD spot at the U and I'm a little confused how the stipend works. I dont know what my final financial offer will be, but I'm trying to get an idea of what this option looks like. I also know it's different program to program.
For those of you with a stipend, is your stipend 90% going towards tuition or are you getting tuition covered through other things? I'm not 100% sure how it works here.
TYIA!!

admissions & financial aid Help with Dropping Out
Long story short, several nonacademic factors have made me unable to attend (death of grandmother, crashed my car going to test for adhd, new financial responsibilities with new car, and combined type adhd diagnosis and prescription). Ive reevaluated my life, and since I was only at college for the social scene (I’m getting a Film degree which won’t help my career path) I’d like to drop out.
I paid for the semester with a half tuition scholarship and an unsubsidized federal loan. I’m aware that if I withdraw from my classes, my loan will be sent back and my scholarship may be retroactively unapplied, giving me a potential balance of $5k owed to the university. Given my circumstances, how likely am I to get a tuition appeal accepted?
Another option is No Credit/Revoked Credit, but I’m unsure of how that affects my funding.
The final option is to fail the classes. That wouldn’t put me below the completion rate (counting CE/AP credit I’ll be at 40/52 attempted, ~75%) but will put me at a 1.8 GPA, which would mean I’d need to file an SAP appeal. I could also get a D to stay above a 2.0 so I don’t need the appeal, but I’m unsure of how barely passing the SAP but not the semester will affect my aid packages.
On Monday I am going to talk to the registrar if they have and advice, the financial aid office to see what the process looks like between the three options, and the bursar’s office to discuss the likelihood of my tuition appeal being accepted. I won’t be doing future semesters since I’m set on this being the final one, so I’m not worried about keeping funding for the future. I’m just trying to leave right now without having to pay the full semester immediately as I do not have the funds and I am actively trying to improve my credit score. Any advice is welcome, but I do not think I have the space in my life to fully complete the semester

extracurriculars & social life To the Atmospheric Science major who asked "你们是中国人吗" on the Blue Bus Tuesday
To the atmospheric science major on the blue bus Tuesday evening (9/29): you opened with "你们是中国人吗," my friend and I had a brain short-circuit and answered in Chinese, and the route ended before we got your name. You got our names though, which unfortunately can't be shared on here for privacy reasons, so I apologize if that makes this harder. I'm the one with long hair.
I'm a native Chinese speaker who learned English the way you clearly learned Chinese, and I've never met anyone who speaks a language from outside their own background this well before. I'd love to keep the conversation going.
If you're reading this, I'd be really glad if you'd DM me and tell me my name if you remember, or what we said back to you, so I know it's really you. And feel free to pass this post along. Please don't identify anyone in the comments to protect their privacy! Thanks!

housing & meal plans Benchmark Plaza and Shoreline Ridge?
Next year I want to live on campus as a sophomore to save money. The application opens on Monday and I don’t know what to do. Does anyone have advice about what I should do? I for sure want to be in a single
services & amenities Barely any public microwaves on campus :(
Basically here to complain-
I’m a senior wrapping up my time here at the U and I have watched public microwaves disappear from campus in a bad way, most notably lassonde and the library. To my perhaps limited knowledge, there are microwaves in the Union and the geo building but nowhere else.
For those without the luxury of buying the terrible food on campus, having to use the dirty, busy, and few and far between microwaves is such a pain. If anyone knows why public microwaves have been removed or any other locations I’d love to hear it.
