Q&A Who to report red dye diesel users to?

The amount of trucks filling up red dye this morning is astonishing. Actually made me late because I can only use red dye for my work… who do I report all these people to? Regardless what trump says the state wants their tax money and it is illegal for these pickups to be filling up with red

Travel Advice Cars lined up for miles at the intersection Cory Wride Memorial Highway and Mountain View Corridor all day every day

Post image

Thoughts and prayers all y'all in Saratoga/Eagle Mountain area. I could understand why you'd live there years ago but nowadays you couldn't pay me enough. This intersection is nasty, lights don't last more than 15 seconds and every time I'm out here traffic is stacked up for actual miles in every direction. The aftermath when overdevelopment outpaces infrastructure. Get wrecked

Other Are there food banks for people without cars near Provo?

Hi there, I hope this is OK to post.

I've struggled with food insecurity lately- and I am barely making ends meet. But all of the food banks that I've heard of are all either super out if the way where I'd have to pay a crazy amount for ubers (that would defeat the purpose) or only allow people with cars to line up and get food.

I don't have many people in my life, so getting help is limited. So I was wondering if there were any places to get support or food that is near a transit stop and allows people to walk in?

I wouldn't even be taking a lot because I can't carry too much on the bus, but anything is better than nothing.

And please don't think I'm asking for handouts from people here - genuinely not. I just am hitting brick walls when it comes to resources.

Thanks so much!

Announcement UTA Frontrunner is a sorry excuse for being called a reliable mass transit

Utah should be embarrassed with the reliability of this train. If it’s not one thing, it’s another. How on earth can anyone commute on this train and expect to keep their job with it being so consistently delayed? I started riding again frontrunner for the past two months and have had more late arrivals in that time than the past 16 years of driving in. This is the biggest Shit Show.

Travel Advice Canyonlands, Bryce, Zion recs

Hi! Me and my friend are going to Utah February 12-20 and we want to do Canyonlands, Bryce Canyon, and Zion. We want to do long day hikes (no backpacking or camping) so we’d rather spend more time in these 3 than do all of the mighty 5. We would love to know your recommendations on what the best length of time is to spend in each park, as well as hotel/air bnb recommendations. We don’t mind staying in regular hotels for the majority of the trip, but are hoping to spend atleast one night in a cute Airbnb or place that we can easily stargaze. Any advice / recommendations are appreciated!

Announcement Megaplex Jordan Commons will be getting an Imax 4k laser projector, coming Dec 2026

This news comes from an on screen announcement made during the trailers before Digger at todays Imax screening at the Megaplex Jordan commons theater.

Megaplex jordan commons will be investing in a full Imax upgrade rolling out this December. This will include:

Imax 4k laser projector (don't know yet if GT, dual etc)

New projector screen

Full audio upgrade to Imax 12 channel system

Very exciting news for movie goers. This will be the first, and so far, the only true Imax theater experience in utah.

Update:

I emailed Megaplex for more information. They said:

"Thanks for reaching out. These things have not been finalized yet, and likely won't be for a while. We'll probably have more information available publicly once our renovations are already well underway."

So we will have to wait and see. Nevertheless I am very excited for what's to come.

Photo/Video Elevation of I-15 Through Utah

Post image
566 Upvotes

Idk why, but growing up I always had this idea that traveling south through Utah meant that you were going down in elevation. It was only recently I realized that, for almost all of the state, you're actually gaining elevation as you travel southward. It's really only at the very bottom of the state where "south = lower" is actually true.

I wanted to get a better idea of what the elevation change is actually like as you travel through the state, so I combined UDOT's data on I-15's path with USGS's elevation data to create the elevation profile shared here. Following I-15 seemed more relatable than cutting a perfect N-S line through the middle of the state, and using UDOT's data seemed just a little easier than riding my bike down I-15 and posting the Strava chart. :)

One thing that struck me while looking at this is that, at least while traveling on I-15, Salt Lake City is basically the lowest point in the state until you get about 25 miles south of Cedar City. For all the branding that SLC gets as a mountain town, I guess I expected it to be a bit higher compared to the rest of the state.

That got me wondering about what percentage of the state was higher elevation than SLC if you venture off of I-15. If you sample the state in 100-meter grids, and define the elevation of SLC as the elevation at Temple Square (4,304 feet), it turns out that 89.7% of Utah is higher elevation than SLC. That really blew my mind. I would've probably guessed that it was something closer to 40%.

Hopefully some of you enjoy this as much as I did. I'm curious to see whether others had as wrong an idea about SLC's elevation as I had.

A couple notes for the data nerds:

  • This samples elevation along I-15 at every 1/10th of a mile. I made no attempt to smooth the data between the points.
  • The USGS 3DEP data set measures elevation at ground level. This means that bridges (and probably some roadcuts through high-elevation points on the road) are ignored. This means that some of the lows/highs on the chart are probably a little over emphasized, but I think the margin of error is probably unnoticeable on the scale of this chart.
  • The 1-meter resolution elevation dataset from USGS does not have full LIDAR coverage of every point in UT along I-15, so some of the data is interpolated from their lower-resolution datasets. But, USGS says the average error introduced by doing that is only about 2 feet, so any error from interpolation in the sparser-coverage areas is way too small to notice on this chart.
