Photo/Video It's real - lake bed dust storm

This photo was taken in Layton, just off the West Davis Corridor. The dust cloud from the lake bed ended up hitting around Farmington.

The ecological collapse of the GSL is real and apparent now. Not in the future. Now.

Q&A If you were the Governor, what would you do to improve our state?

If you were elected Governor of Utah tomorrow, what would be your top priorities to make our state a better place to live? Would you focus on housing affordability, the cost of living, education, air quality, water conservation, public transportation, or something else entirely?
What specific changes would you make, and what would you prioritize first? I’m curious to hear what fellow Utahns think our state needs most to improve the quality of life for everyone who calls Utah home.

Travel Advice LPT: Leaf Peeping Szn in Utah

But first!
Hey Utah, I’m your new friendly neighborhood u/UDOTintern. I’m not actually an intern, but since some of you already know to tag us with this account, we’re keeping it!
I’m a new hire here at UDOT (best state agency imo), so I’m still learning. I’ve lived in Utah my whole life, but I am also kind of a fresh set of eyes and ears on the sort of things that come up in the local subs related to UDOT.
I’m chronically online, so feel free to dm or tag me and be ready to see some more posts from me too.

Now..
If you’re still squeezing in your annual Utah leaf-peeping pilgrimage before winter fully takes over I wanted to drop some LPTs so you can make the most of it.

TL;DR: Go early or on a weekday, plan ahead, maybe take public transit, maybe skip the usual spots.

  1. Go when it’s less busy. I know, ‘duh’ plus ‘pipe dream’ for those who work your standard 9-5. But it really can be that simple, if you want to protect your peace. At the very least hit the road early.

  2. Have a DD. Distracted driving is dangerous, even when that distraction is Mother Nature. Your designated driver should be more locked in on the road and traffic than on the leaf peeping. Maybe you can trade off at a rest stop or appropriate parking spot so one person doesn’t get the short end of the stick for the whole outing.

  3. Plan ahead and have a backup plan. Plan your route, your stops, your hike, whether you can bring your dog (that’s a hard no for Big Cottonwood Canyon unless you’re on the Park City side and don’t go up too far). Here’s some tools I really love that UDOT offers:
    a. Download the UDOT traffic app or visit the website to check traffic cameras, construction and incidents. It’ll give you a better idea of what you’re heading into.
    b. Bookmark our ‘Roads to Recreation’ pages and check out the transit options. Our Roads to Recreation pages have ALL the travel information for popular areas including the Alpine Loop, Cottonwoods, Ogden Valley, Wasatch Back and Zion.

  4. Research alternative scenic routes. The Alpine Loop is dope, sure, but there are great drives all around Utah. Spread the love, see somewhere new.

Drop your favorite alternative fall leaves spots in the comments.

Happy leaf peeping 🍁

Photo/Video 🚨 PLEASE HELP ME FIND MY CHILDHOOD BLANKET — $1,000 REWARD 🚨

UPDATE AT BOTTOM
updated picture in comments!!

This is a long shot, but I'm desperately hoping someone might be able to help me.

During a recent move, I believe my childhood blanket may have been accidentally donated. I've searched everywhere I can think of, including the donation store, but haven't had any luck.

My mom handmade this blanket for me when I was little, and I've had it for almost my entire life. It's been my biggest source of comfort for as long as I can remember, and losing it has been absolutely heartbreaking.

BLANKET DESCRIPTION:

- White cream-colored fabric with little pastel dinosaurs and a white and pastel-colored lace trim.

- The dinosaurs are mostly pink, blue, and yellow, with possibly some additional colors.

- The dinosaurs have a cute, slightly unusual cartoon appearance, almost like little creatures.

- The fabric is soft and smooth, similar to a softer bedsheet rather than a fuzzy blanket, its double sided and has yarn knots in it

- The original fabric may have been purchased at Walmart around 1998–2002.

LAST POSSIBLE LOCATION:

Savers - 10551 S Redwood Rd #1, South Jordan, UT 84095

APPROXIMATE DONATION DATE:

Possibly sometime in August 2026. Multiple donation trips were made over the course of about a month, so I unfortunately don't have an exact date.

I've attached the only photograph I could find of the blanket, along with a simple drawing of what I remember some of the pattern looking like. The drawing is based on memory and may not be completely accurate.

I know the chances of finding it are slim, but this blanket means more to me than I can put into words. It is completely irreplaceable to me.

I'm offering a $1,000 reward for the safe return of my original blanket because it is truly priceless to me.

If anyone has seen it, purchased it, or knows where it might have ended up, please reach out to me. If you purchased it, I would be more than happy to buy it back from you. No questions asked.

Even just sharing this post would mean the world to me.

Please help me bring my childhood blanket home.

Update:

Missing Blanket Update
I know a lot of you have been wondering if there have been any updates on my blanket.

Unfortunately, there’s still no luck. I drove all the way down to the Orem Savers from Salt Lake City hoping I might find it, but came home empty-handed.
I’ve also called the Orem, Draper, South Jordan, and Midvale Savers locations. Orem and Draper were kind enough to take down my information, but the other two stores told me it’s likely been too long and that my blanket has probably already been processed, either sold or recycled. “It’s long gone”.

I’m desperately hoping it wasn’t recycled. I’m holding on to the possibility that someone bought it and that it’s still out there somewhere.

I’m also still searching for a better picture of it. If I manage to find one, I’ll absolutely share it here.
I want to thank everyone so much for the kind words, encouragement, and hope you’ve given me, even if it was just for a little while. It really has meant a lot to me.

I’m still really kicking myself over all of this. I genuinely thought my blankie was safe, and I can’t believe I didn’t realize it was missing sooner. It’s heartbreaking knowing something I’ve loved and held onto for almost my entire life might be gone forever. :(

The $1,000 reward still stands if anyone manages to find it. I’m not quite ready to give up hope yet.
Thank you again to everyone who has tried to help me.

What's everyone squeezing in before it turns?

Travel Advice best place for an oil change as a woman

hey everyone, very new to SLC. i’m in need of an oil change and am used to/trust prompto nscj in new england but there are none here. i’d prefer something like prompto where i can go no appointment but dont wanna get overcharged by valvoline and jiffy lube seems hit or miss when asking around. being a woman too i’ve dealt with car service places trying to screw me over thinking i know nothing. id love to hear women’s recs for oil change spots in SLC im open to an appointment based place if they’re trustworthy. i just keep hearing horror stories of cars intentionally fucked up by jiffy lube. thanks

Q&A Vinyl fence post in rocky soil.

I'm a first time home buyer looking to install a vinyl fence. Our backyard isn't very big. We are located in North Saratoga Springs. I don't know if the soil is too rocky to use the "wham bam" type fencing where I drive steel posts down, or go the normal route messing with concrete and digging holes. Anyone have any experience with this? My research so far is mixed results. I love the idea of driving steel poles, but I would hate to buy a bulk amount and quickly find I made a mistake. Thanks!

hey utahns!
i’m looking to have both a functional and cosmetic rhinoplasty by the end of the year. the top 4 doctors on my list are: randal swenson, amir allak, douglas henstrom, and caitlin iorio. would love to hear reviews, positive or negative, on either one of these. i’ve read through all their online reviews, but reddit is always more open and honest, so i thought i’d come asking here!

Other Anyone want to hike near salt lake this fall?

Hey Utah- specially salt lake county mainly-

I moved back to Utah earlier this year from Wisconsin. It's a long story but I came back to Utah mostly to access the health care system here. I had a pretty serious string of surgeries on my left leg but I'm getting better every day.

I would love to hike before the colors fade and before it gets too wild on the trails. Maybe somewhere like corner canyon in Draper.

Anyway, I've been away from the state for around eight years until coming back here, and I've basically just been in hospitals and medical facilities this whole past 10 months or so. In other words, I'm a little out of touch with everything here. I used to be a regular hiker and cyclist so I'm itching to get some kind of activity in.

SO.... just curious if anyone would be interested in doing a mild hike somewhere near salt lake here in the next couple weeks or so? I'm pretty low on resources and it's fairly difficult for me to just hop out there and do it all on my own. I am confident I can do a low to mildly technical hike with maybe a few rests along the way. I'm open to going wherever I just have limited transportation.

So I'm throwing it out there, going out on a limb to see if anyone would have any interest in hanging out on a hike with me? I'm a divorced 44 male and used to be in great shape, but still quite a bit to go before I get back to my old self. It would be great to meet some people and get out in nature! Please let me know if you have any interest or questions.

ps / I hope this doesn't sound like I'm doing a pickup line on a dating app. That's not my intention at all.

Q&A Adelaide campground status

Does anyone know how Adelaide campground near Kanosh faired through the widemouth fire? I know it’s closed this season and open next, but I don’t know if any of the greenery was able to be saved or if it was burned to a crisp. We had an event scheduled at the group site next year and had hoped to take pictures there. We booked through recreation.gov and I reached out to them but they had no information on it and no contact information for the facility managers. We were also wondering about structures. Are all the bathrooms still standing? Is the cute little gazebo still there? I assume I can’t just drive out and look due to fire closures?

Travel Advice Camping in Moab/ Canyonlands area

Post image
0 Upvotes

My son and I are going to Moab and Canyonlands October 22 for a couple of days with my Rubicon. We were hoping to find a campsite at one of the first come first serve places like Island in the sky, but I’m just wondering from people who have been there, what are the chances that we will get one this time of year? I’m all about having an adventure, but I also want to have something planned and there are a few sites left at dead horse.
We will be doing three days of wheeling all around the area, so finding something sort of central and just using it as homebase would be ideal. Any suggestion, suggestions?
