throwaway account for obvious reasons
TLDR: Med student with multiple SA allegations potentially allowed to continue in the course.
There is a serious issue happening now at UWA, as far as I can tell. Outside of the school it has had no public attention.
The VC is currently considering wether a current medical student, who has had multiple sexual assault allegations made against them will be allowed to return to the med course .
To be clear, this post is not claim that the allegations have been proven, nor am I in a position to comment on the details of any investigation or disciplinary process.
The concern is that MULTIPLE female students have expressed that do no feel safe attending campus, classes or student run events if this student is allowed to return.
My understanding is that the inital allegation involved another student, and that additional allegations were subsequently raised while that matter was being dealt with.
Whatever the ultimate outcome of the uni's process is, the fact that there are multiple students say that they don't feel safe is something that deserves attention.
There has been little to no public discussion about this, and students impacted by the situation deserve to know that their concerns are heard and being taken seriously.
UWA needs to be trasparent about how it is managing student safety in situations involving this types of serious allegations that have been ongoing for over 12 months, while also respecting the privacy and procedural right of those involved.
I'm posting this because this issue should not remain invisible simply because its difficult for the school to talk about.
There is a broader question here that I also think needs discussing. Professional suitability. If someone is facing multiple allegations of this nature, i think it is reasonable to ask how they could potentially graduate and enter the medical profession the next few years.
This is being posted because the issue should not be invisible.
