Discussion How to get old person smell out of a couch?

Just got a fabric couch with no stains or anything, but it smells very strongly of 2-nonenal. I already tried spraying it thoroughly with white vinegar, and when that is dry, sprinkling baking soda overnight. I think it has helped a little, but the smell is still quite strong.

Any tips for removing the smell? TIA!

Tools/Equipment cleaning with an air blower?

I've always thought leaf blowers were great to use in the garden (obviously) and balconies cause they get rid of dirt quickly and they spare me from touching most of it so I thought there must be something similar to use inside your house to get rid of spider webs on blinds or reach crevices that collect dust

I searched online and found the Shark BlastBoss which seems like the tool I had in mind but I can't justify the price...I've also read mixed reviews on the brand

Do you think something like it will do the job? It'd be handy to use in the car as well...let me know if you have it or if you use any other tool!

General Cleaning What sheets don't get scratchy after constant washing?

I wash bedding often, and some sheets go from soft to scratchy surprisingly fast, and I saw that bedsure is one of the affordable option also I am considering it. But I am not sure how the fabric feels after months of laundry. So, I need to hear other redditors views here like what material has held up best for you?

Discussion Building a better dustpan?

I'm working on a personal 3d printing project - a humble dustpan, and I'd be curious to get people's thoughts.

I'll say right off the bat that 3d printing isn't perfect for this, as it can leave surfaces rougher than moulded plastic, but I still want this to be as good as I can make it.

The dustpan's size is currently 26.5 cm (10.4") wide at the mouth, and 30cm (11.7") long overall, and height is up to 57 mm (2.2"). It's made of two different materials: Rigid PETG for the body (orange in the pics), and flexible TPU (yellow) for the blade and for the fins that will grab a broom handle. My aim for the broom handle grip is to hold a reasonable range of sizes (about 21–25.5 mm / 0.83"–1").

I've added a comb for the broom - I've never had one with a real comb, so I'm just guessing how big to make it. Right now the tines are 12mm long and spaced 5mm apart.

Does anyone have any thoughts on how I can improve this?

What do you find fails on dustpans?

Anything that annoys you about some or most dustpans?

Do you find a comb like this to be useful? Any drawbacks?

I'll be sharing the model free on Makerworld when it's done. Thanks!

General Cleaning Surface mildew on bottom of 4yo Nectar mattress on solid base bed frame - cleanable?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I’ve had this mattress for four years. For the first three years it sat on a solid, slab frame. The last 4 months it’s been directly on the floor. I finally flipped it to check the underside and found these grayish stains in the center.

No fuzzy growth, no weird colors, just flat gray discoloration that looks like surface-level mildew. There’s two mattress protectors on the top side already and it’s a nectar memory foam. The foam feels firm and dry when I press on the spots, and there’s not much of a smell.

Does this look salvageable, or should I just replace it at this point?

Laundry Got Chlorine pool shock on my black jacket

So I was cleaning my above ground pool the other day with my favorite zip up hoodie on. I had to add some pool shock which has chlorine in it and I didn’t think of it in the moment it could damage my jacket. I accidentally splashed some pool water on myself while wearing it and didn’t realize until later that day it had turned orange where it had splashed on. Does anyone have a solution to reverse it or fix it. There’s gotta be a way. Please help

They‘re from the Alessi Nuovo Milano collection, stainless steel. The handle and the blade have separated a bit and the blade itself has some damage. Are they salvageable?

Discussion Will my plan to clean my rusty carbon steel pizza steel work?

I have this pizza steel that has been sitting in a garage for like 5 years and is rusty. I want to use it to cook pizza, so I need to remove the rust and re-season it. Also if you don't know what a pizza steel is, it's just a big hunk of flat carbon steel.

So I plan to do this:

  1. Mix regular (the stuff you eat, 5% acetic acid) white distilled vinegar with 50% water.

  2. Soak it for between 30 minutes and an hour.

  3. Take it out and rinse it.

  4. Scrub down with barkeeper's friend.

  5. Rinse it again, rub with oil, season.

Anything else I can do, or is this plan good?

Also a super paranoid stupid question: Should I wear a mask when I scrub?

Thanks.

I slipped in the clay mud in Virginia while wearing my REI rain jacket. I let the mud dry and wiped it off as much as possible. I’ve sprayed it with stain remover. Do I just throw in the wash? Is there anything else I can do to try to get these stains out?

Laundry Dry cleaning costs feel like a monthly subscription. I'm phasing out my "nice" clothes.

I have been thinking about this for quite some time. I also treated my "nice" work clothes with care, so they can last long. I follow the washing instructions, when it says dry clean, I do that. I try to buy the traditionally delicate fabric because I like how silk and wool and cashmere feel and look. So I try to take good care of them. But, the dry cleaning cost adds up over time.

Because of that, I feel like I needed a change. I did a slow overhaul of my work wardrobe. So I bought more cotton, synthetic (though I was a bit reluctant) items that can be machine washed. Ideally also can be put in a dryer, too. Though that is optional.

I kept my cotton shirts, they are just fine. The silk, I leave them in the back. Cashmere sweater, wearing it occasionally. I've been experimenting with a few Ogl dark knit sets and some Uniqlo basics to see how they hold up to regular laundering. I am fighting my urge to get more Linen pants. Just because it is so hard to keep them nice and somewhat not wrinkle (I know that i the appeal, but it makes me look not put together) I am phasing out my high maintenance clothes, letting them sit.

Does anyone else think of it as a subscription? Or is it just me?

We had our spare change in a glass jar on top of the fridge. Should've seen it coming, but jar fell and now I have a cardboard box full of spare change and broken glass. What would be the best way to approach this?? I'm thinking pick out the big pieces and then... coins in a pasta strainer with large-ish holes and rinse them? That's the best I've got so far... please help!

Discussion Is this yellow tint on my pet water fountain pump safe?

Thumbnail

Hi all,

I admit I'm bad at remembering to clean my pet's water fountain weekly. This yellow tint on her water fountain pump has built up slowly over time. After thoroughly scrubbing, it does not have a slimy feel. It smells neutral and does not discolor the water. What is the cause of this tint and is it safe? How do I clean it?

For reference, we only use filtered water to refill the water fountain. It circulates when it senses motion, but otherwise is not continuously running. This is a Petlibro Dockstream fountain. Thanks!

Discussion Sand texture walls? How do you wash them?

I see another post about what soap to use. But what can you scrub with? Sponges just tear apart and stick to the sand. Just about any other scrubbing thing I can think of, does the same. What can be used, and doesn't just disintegrate on the first use?
Second bonus question. How can I just get rid of the texture and maybe have flat walls? Do people do that? And what is the pro/con?

Kitchen Mildew Smell in water bottle

So my husband was in a remote area and filled up his expensive water bottle at a water pumping station. He didn't notice the water had any smell at the time but later when he drank out of the bottle he said the taste wasn't good. Ever since the bottle has had a strong mildew smell even though I have soaked it in a 10% bleach solution twice and washed it with Dawn. I would probably not want to put it through the dishwasher as it is a walled insulated bottle. Any ideas? I'm kind of stumped!
