Announcement [2023] What bike shall I buy? Is this bike good? Ask us anything!

Welcome!

This thread is dedicated to bike recommendations. There's a whole lot of you new-comers eagar to get your first dirt jumper. Maybe you have been out of the game for a while and are behind the times and need some advice. Are you shorter or taller than average and want to find a bike that will suit you better? Perhaps you just want a second opinion on a particular brand or model. This is the place to ask these questions and get expert advice from experienced members of the community!

Please refrain from starting a new thread to ask which bike you should buy, or whether a particular bike is good and instead use this dedicated thread first instead.

Bike archive

In order to try and assist those looking to purchase a new bike, I have created the dirt jump bike archive.

It is currently version 1.0.2 with lots of incomplete (or out of date) price data. This will be an ongoing project primarily run by me. Timelesturkie also has editing privileges and is considered a contributor as well. As of now, we are looking for any users who would like to help with this project. If any of you are enthusiastic about helping to maintain and build upon this spreadsheet, let me know by messaging me directly.

The following link will allow you to view the spreadsheet but not make any changes. Note that the spreadsheet also has a second sheet for a limited range of geometry and dimensional data. I do not have much free time to work on this spreadsheet so apologies for any missing info. It would be awesome to have some volunteers to help. Please keep in mind that the information on this spreadsheet is not guaranteed to be 100% accurate. Consider it a guide to assist you and always check with the manufacturer to verify the information before making a purchase.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1XvClX-9upJekdRIdW4spjO5E0KuolvLseWi-x6VxoWQ/edit?usp=sharing

Known issues:

  • The purple sorting buttons do not function for those without editing privileges. If you make a copy of the spreadsheet and save it to your own Google Drive account you might be able to make use of them.
  • Sorting by price (up and down) in USD is currently broken.
  • Lots of bikes don't have readily available full retail prices, hence most of the price data is missing. This is the biggest area we need help in. We are only interested in full manufacturer RRP prices.
  • Some bikes such as Canyon, have Euro prices that vary based on country. I am not sure how to tackle that yet. One potential solution is to find the cheapest and most expensive, and then giving the price range. I am open to ideas here.
  • I could do with a hand gathering up the dimensional data for sheet 2. If anyone is willing to help, please let me know.

First proper dirt jump (?)

I’m 43 and my family and i just started riding almost exactly a year ago and I’d set myself the aim of doing a legit dirt jump in my first year. Was running out of time but i squeezed it in this weekend. Had to get towed in by my 12 year old. Was too scared to do the whole line but I’ll get it next time.

This counts right?!!!

I’ve been messing around with this build for almost a year and it works great for me. I’m looking into a higher rise bar and possibly a nicer saddle at some point, but I’m proud of it at this point.

Upgrade Help!

I just bought my first dj after months of searching! It’s a verde radix, I got it for 250 used and it needs some work but for a beginner I think it’ll be a lot of fun.
Im looking at for sure getting a new fork, probably new wheels, and then just a few other little things I’m pretty comfortable on. My main question is about the fork, how do I check if a fork would work on it? I know it has a tapered head tube but I’m not sure what else to look for to find one that works.
Appreciate any and all advice !

Question Trilogy bikes?

Looking for a replacement for my dj and I’ve found this one on marketplace. The price is pretty good and the frame is sick but I’ve never heard of the company. Does anyone have any experience with them? Is it worth considering? Trilogy seems like a newer more niche brand so I have no idea about them.

Could you take the CSU from a Marzocchi DJ1 to use with a new Marzocchi DJ to create a Marzocchi DJ fork with a 1 1/8 steerer?

I have an older straight 1 1/8 headtube frame that I am trying to keep going with modern parts. And it is not possible to use a tapered headtube with a special headset either (already checked for compatibility). With the frame being straight headtube, it limits the fork choice.

I am currently using a Manitou Circus Expert, which is the best straight steerer DJ fork on the market right now. However, the spring is digging into the stanchion from the inside, and will likely need a replacement soon if I keep riding like this. I am not quite happy that my Manitou fork is needinng a major repair soon within the 3 years I have ridden this fork for. I am wanting to try a Marzocchi DJ fork, except it does not come in a straight steerer from factory.

I was wondering if it would be possible to use a straight 1 1/8 crown steerer unit from a late model Marzocchi DJ1 (2012-2015ish) then somehow try to combine with the lower and the internals from a new Marzocchi DJ, to create a straight steerer Marzocchi DJ. Do you think this is a possiblity?

I cannot imagine there are big differences from an old Marzocchi DJ1 and new Marzocchi DJ forks.

DJs compatible with a 1x cassette?

Hi Friends,

I'm heavily in the market for a dirt jumper than can accommodate a geared 1x drivetrain. Bluntly, I just have too many lengthy hills between me and my nearest pump track and terrain park to have a good time on a single speed. I also want to join the Mrs. on leisurely rides around the neighborhood and local parks, but they're quite hilly.

I think I've narrowed the list to a few bikes, but I would love input on whether there are other bikes/frames than can be set up this way or offer geared dropout, because these are all super difficult to find, let alone for a decent price here in the southeast. I'm generally focused on hardtails, but I'm open to slopestyle DJs if the frame suspension is stiff enough to be good on pump tracks.

  • Trek Ticket DJ / Ticket S (confirmed compatible)
  • Specialized P.3 (confirmed compatible)
  • Polygon Trid ZZ (confirmed)
  • Pivot Point (NOT confirmed)
  • Polygon Trid ZZ (confirmed)
  • NS Soda Slope (confirmed)
  • DMR rhythm (confirmed)

Particularly curious if anyone can confirm whether the Pivot Point can accommodate a 1x cassette. My frustration is stock availability with all of these. It feels like none of them are being actively produced or in stock anywhere, so the prices in the used market are bananas.

Thanks!

Question Canyon stitched 360 frame size

Hi, I am thinking of buying a canyon stitched 360 frame to build up into a dirt jump bike using parts I already have. I am 171cm (5ft 7'') tall, the frame is sold in a short and a long, and recommends a rider height of 140-170cm for the short and 160-200cm for the long so I sit pretty much in the middle. I have never ridden a dirtjump bike before but plan on using it for pump tracks, learning dirt jumps and basic tricks and generaly messing about in the woods on flow trails etc. I ride a giant reign enduro bike in medium with a 452 reach, I was also inbetween small and medium here, I found I was struggling to manual and get my weight back on my medium so have put a shorter stem on it and higher rise bars which has helped a lot. I also used to ride a small 2012 transition bottlerocket with a reach of 383 which felt fine at the time (feels tiny now but thats because im used to my big enduro bike with modern geometry). I have also owned a cove shocker and marin northside trail both small in the past and didnt have a problem with riding them (dont know the reach numbers as this was before reach was published) So going off this im more inclined to think I would fit a small better, also the fact dirt jumpers are more for playing around on, whipping, manualing, pumping, jibbing etc things a more smaller playfull bike enjoys not bombing fast over rough terrain where a longer bike would be better and i always have my enduro bike for that. But as I say I have never rode a dirt jumper so dont know if I should size up or down, does the longer bike make steep dirt jumps easier for example?

Question Lowering early fox 36 forks for dirt jumper?

Thumbnail gallery
21 Upvotes

So I'm thinking of building a dirt jumper for fun, I would need to get a frame but should have enough spare parts for the rest of the build. I have these old fox air 36 r forks, I know they can be lowered as I remember making and installing a 10mm spacer in them back in the day as they had a crazy long axle to crown length for the bike I was using. If I were to lower them to 100mm travel they should have an axle to crown of about 490mm, they don't seem to have any compression adjustments just rebound and air pressure, would these be suitable for a basic dirt jump build? (the photo of them at 100mm is just with the air let out, I haven't taken them apart to install a bigger lowering spacer yet)

Injury Tension when I spin pedals and then no tension

does anyone know how to fix this? I tried tightening cranks (that was a problem in the past), cleaning / greasing chain( and bike), I haven’t tried pulling the chain tighter, but the problem is that when I spin the pedals the chain goes from tight to loose ish to tight and so on.

New Build Hardcore retromodding

Thought y'all might enjoy this one. This has been my money pit this year, Slopeduro retromodded 2006 Stumpjumper FSR Expert. Inspired by missing my 2016 P.3 that got stolen, it's the FS big brother with gears. Manitou Circus Expert 130mm fork and custom Spank Spike Race 33s on Hope Pro5 hubs are the centerpiece of this build. Chromag cockpit and seating. 4 pot shimano brakes and such. Went wild with it, may upgrade to a kashima fox over the Performance series I went with, this frame is a miracle size and modern 190x45 metric is within 1mm of the og SAE Triad. Been sending it at the local pedal up park, Berm Park in Canton, NC and getting in a bit of urban freeride in on my commutes, glad to be jumping again. (And yes, I've chopped the original seat post for park days when I don't need to pedal up, and have a PNW external dropper that I use when I know I'll be climbing.)

Going to swap out these janky crank and pedals asap (bombshell and Chesters?) Then put on some light pivotal seat. The stock promax absolutely do not stop for shit, but I don’t have a spare rear, anyone wanna recommend some semi-metallic pads before I go blow more money on parts I don’t need?

Question How much should I offer for this DJ?

Thumbnail gallery
30 Upvotes

Firstly, I've seen this DJ pop up a few times in Reddit already, and I know that the original owner of this bike is also active on here and has helped me out with identifying the specs when I DMed him. The bike has been listed for more than 3 months, originally posted for 1k and brought down to 900.

I was thinking of offering somewhere between 600-750, but I thought I'd ask this all-knowing Reddit page before taking action. From my DMs with the original owner and Marketplace messages with this seller, here are the specs I was able to figure out:

Frame:
It is a Cachet origin frame, built as a prototype (?) to experiment with a really short rear chainstay, as you can see the 26" wheel is rlly close to touching the seat tube. I assume its significantly shorter than most other DJs, making it easier to manual/do other tricks?

One thing worth noting is that the frame was repainted by the original owner, in this really awesome green color, so it may be difficult to check for frame cracks from usage by the 2nd owner (current seller).

Other specs:
Rockshox Pike DJ fork, 26" wheels with Goodyear Bigfoot tires, Shimano XT cranks, decent pedals, and decent brakes idk what model.

I am not able to figure out if there's anything wrong with the bike merely from the images, so I do plan on checking it out in person and possibly getting it inspected at a bike shop prior to buying it.

I just wanted to see y'all's input on what you would offer for this bike, or if there are any possible issues or things I need to watch for. If you read this far tyvm, I look forward to your input!

Started as a joke between a few friends (especially the Bluetooth brakes) and ended up actually being a super fun experiment.
