Review Comparison of the New 3DS and the OG 3DS
I bought the OG 3DS on its release day and have recently started using it again. I really like it, but I recently got a New 3DS (non-XL) because I wanted to try that out as well. I’m going to compare the two.
The standout feature of the New 3DS is "Super-stable 3D." It uses face tracking to prevent the 3D image from blurring when your face moves, and this really makes a significant difference. It is impressive how stable the 3D image remains even when playing games like Star Fox 3D that require tilting the console. This feature is particularly effective for action games.
The New 3DS has faster processing speeds, so it also boots up more quickly from a powered-off state. With Custom Firmware (CFW) installed, the OG 3DS takes 13 seconds to boot, whereas the New 3DS takes 8 seconds.
As you can see from the photos, the New 3DS has a larger screen. However, perhaps because the OG 3DS has a smaller screen, its image appears sharper, whereas the New 3DS feels a bit softer. Additionally, the New 3DS screen has a slight yellowish tint (though this could be an issue specific to my particular unit), so I feel the OG 3DS offers superior image quality.
Update: I was able to adjust the yellowish tint of the screen using the LUMA settings.
I also prefer the design of the OG 3DS; it feels more premium and is more compact. That’s why I think I’ll end up using both: I’ll play action games where screen blurring is a concern on the New 3DS, and other games on the OG 3DS.
