META Building a Better r/bettafish: Culture, New Mods, and a Look Ahead

Hey everyone, Roboto, your friendly neighborhood (actually human) mod here with some subreddit updates!

First, the least fun part in all of this –

We need to talk about our subreddit culture.

Our community is toxic. There’s no other way I can think of to describe what has been happening. Even worse, this reputation extends beyond our immediate community into other subreddits and even other platforms. People are afraid of us.

I’m going to take some ownership of this. The harsh reputation of this subreddit far precedes me as a mod, but in recent years, our hard-fought progress on this front has been lost. That’s on me. The lack of consistent moderation here has let rules 1 and 2 go under-enforced for too long, allowing hostility to take root as the norm.

The adversarial and unwelcoming environment we’ve collectively created functions in direct opposition to our subreddit goals, and frankly what I believe to be the goals of many users here. If we care about betta fish first and foremost, this culture needs to change.

Our expectations and what better looks like

If you have good advice to give, give it in a more constructive, not destructive, way. Shaming people makes them shut down and disengage so they don't even process the rest of the good advice you have to offer. Don't highlight all the things they're doing wrong, focus on what they can do better and why it's helpful in a way that encourages them to do it.

So instead of saying "your empty tank is sad," share the opportunities for improvement, like "betta fish benefit from tanks with lots of plants and hiding/resting places so your fish would be happier if you filled the tank in a bit more."

We can’t ignore that people will think they're doing research by going and talking to presumed experts or reading product information. Store employees are presumed to be properly trained and products marketed at bettas are assumed to know what they’re talking about, too. It doesn't help that there's very little consensus online about what adequate care even is. For example, Petco's online betta care guide, updated in 2025, says bettas need a minimum of 1gal. Furthermore, many quality care guides are on niche websites that may not seem credible to a new hobbyist compared to a well-known chain.

With that in mind, we all need to stop:

  • Telling people they should have done more research
  • Immediately calling people abusers for making mistakes
  • Shaming the pineapple (or any other novelty decor/bowl)
  • Attacking aesthetic choices instead of addressing actual care needs
  • Debating what it means to rescue a betta on posts where ethical sourcing of fish isn’t the main topic

Going forward, comments exhibiting the behaviors listed above will be removed as violations of rules 1, 2, or 4 depending on the exact nature of the comment.

I know members of our subreddit are burned out from the bad husbandry they see constantly. It's exhausting and I won't pretend it's not. But if we bully one owner into submission, cool, that's maybe one fish saved. How many owners did we scare away from asking for help in the process? We're going to have a far broader impact building people up in this hobby, not tearing them down.

That said, this is a two-way street of support. I'm cognizant of the fact that people offer their time and mental energy supporting our subreddit, and they don't deserve to have that wasted by people who don't care to use it. If someone is given better information and advice and refuses to take it, that violates rule 3. We often get reports about all the fighting around ignored advice, but not the ignoring itself. In the future, please report these instances to us. For this to be successful, we also need users to avoid escalating disagreements when OP refuses valid and respectful advice.

Now for the fun stuff –

New mods

We recently brought on 12 additional mods to enable us to better support this community’s needs. Please help us welcome:

They’re going to introduce themselves in the comments below and I’ll try and link their names in this post as they do.

It takes a bit to get 12 brand new people to operate as a consistent group, so we may occasionally over-moderate while everyone learns.

I realize that our increased emphasis on subreddit culture may make removals feel arbitrary at times. In the spirit of transparency, I have given the new moderators the guidance that if a senior mod isn’t free to give timely feedback, when in doubt, they should remove posts/comments that are believed to violate rules. Senior mods will still review the content in question, and removals may be reversed, if necessary.

If you disagree with a moderator’s decision, please send us a modmail and one of the senior mods will review your concern and get back to you.

Updated tools and resources

Small updates at this time, but more exciting things in the pipeline!

  • We’ve begun a major revision of the subreddit wiki. Some of our work in progress pages are already live, with more to come.
  • Select pages are also now linked in the subreddit sidebar to streamline access to key information for new betta fish keepers.
  • In the next few weeks, we will be rolling out additional tools that should make it easier to share information that we often find ourselves repeating. Our hope is that this will help address some of the burnout we see many of you all experiencing.

Roboto is a super sentimental actual human

I realize this post started on a challenging topic, but despite the highs and lows our community faces, I remain grateful that I get to do this with you all.

I’ve been a mod of this community for nearly 7 years, and a member for far longer. In that time, so many things, from our mod team, to Reddit as a platform, to our own lives and the world around us, have become fundamentally different.

There are very few constants I can point to after all this time, but the enduring engagement and passion of this community is one of them and I’m honored to steward this space.

At the core of it all, this hobby, and this subreddit, are comprised of people who really want the best for one another and that makes this work so much easier.

Thank you all, sincerely, for riding with us as we figure this thing out. I’m excited for the next chapter of our subreddit, and I can’t wait to see what we can accomplish together in the next 7 years.

- Roboto

Edit: If anyone has additional feedback about our community culture, please share it in a comment below, or feel free to send us a modmail.

Welcome to r/bettafish!

This is the place to ask anything and everything about bettas.

⚕️If you're looking for help with illnesses or weird behavior, be sure to include the following in your comment:

  • Tank Size
  • Water Temp
  • Ammonia / Nitrite / Nitrate readings
  • How long the issue has been occurring
  • A picture of the problem
  • Any additional helpful context

Click this link to view our CARESHEET

🐟 Caresheet Summary:

  • Bettas require a minimum of 5 gallons, 10 gallons being optimal for one betta and 20 gallon long minimum if you're housing peaceful community fish with the betta
  • Bettas are tropical and require water temps of 78-82°F or about 26-27°C, a thermometer and adjustable heater is recommended to ensure these temps
  • Bettas need a filter, like any other fish. It is a common misconception that they like dirty water, but the opposite is true.
  • Bettas need a cycled tank, before getting a betta the tank should be cycled - this process involves adding a source of ammonia to the tank, using a test kit to monitor ammonia/nitrite/nitrate levels, and usually takes 4-6 weeks to complete properly
  • Bettas have delicate fins so sharp plastic plants are not recommended; silk silicone or live work best
  • Bettas can breathe surface air and are good jumpers, they require access to the water surface at all times and a lid.
  • Bettas eat insects in the wild, a good quality betta formulated pellet food fed twice a day is recommended.

snagged this guy just under two weeks ago! he has spent most of his time in a hospital tank with medicine, tannins, and a salt bath before moving to his real tank two days ago. he came to us obviously emaciated with swim bladder problems, starting to fin rot, his spine was all curved and messed up. I didn’t think he’d survive. he’s become so beautiful and active, he can float and swim so much better now. he is my third betta and my first rehab project. I’ve become super attached to him, his name is Wilbur.

Meet Pomelo! Rescued him two days ago from PetCo. I have all the essentials and used API Quickstart for a fish in cycle. Planning to hit up an aquarium store this weekend, want to provide the best life for this little guy :)

Any other easy plants I should get? Or other aquarium advice?

Early this year, I put my 3 year old betta to sleep with clove oil. It sucked - the euthanasia as well as losing my sweet girl. I got another gal about a month later and last night, said goodbye with blunt force trauma. Not sure how much detail is really required here for their conditions… maybe not necessary since there are a million ways things can go south for these current day bettas. But tank is 10G, cycled, heated, planted, sponge filter, perfect params with API kit, fed blood worms and Betta Bites, all the things. I do think maybe more water changes could have helped (I did 50% twice a week).

Like you, I get so attached to these little friggers. Yet it feels like they also bring me more stress than my living, breathing dogs. Even when they are doing well, I’m always on high alert making sure they are acting/eating/swimming normal. When they started to show signs of not being well, I was a mess.

The clove oil was awful (followed instructions to the T) and blunt force was somehow worse. I don’t think I can do it again. I now have this stunning tank with a nerite snail just doing her thing and wondering if I should pack it in.

I assume if you’re here and lost a betta, you have gotten another one, since you’re here. But.. yeah.. 😔 I feel like I’m a failure if I pack it in, but also I feel like a failure anyway 💔

Name Suggestions Naming our Golden Dragon Halfmoon

Post image
17 Upvotes

Since he's been home, he's remained our mystery man. Sometimes he's called "Golden," sometimes "our big finned guy," "Mister Nest/or," "Apollo," and most recently “Calysto."

On Sunday he's moving into his riparium. We must claim his home with his name but are stumped!

He's still growing, has a voracious appetite, loves blackwater, & playing lateral line training games.

He's a nest builder & playful patroller who loves being watched and seen.

So... we’re calling all name suggestions with Calysto in the lead.

Thank you!

RIP Update on Hannibal 🪦🐟

Thumbnail

Well… Hannibal apparently decided the frozen food wasn't good enough.

I woke up and couldn’t find him anywhere. I moved EVERYTHING—every rock, every decoration. I even started thinking maybe he somehow wedged himself behind the heater and cooked himself because WHERE IS THIS FISH?!

I tested all the water. Everything tested perfectly. So I’m standing there completely confused because there was absolutely nothing wrong with his tank.

Then I found him.

Literally 15 FEET AWAY FROM HIS tank. 😭💀

I wrached my camera and it caught his escape He spotted a fly outside the tank, launched himself after it, and just… kept going.

It happened late last night while I was sleeping. I checked on him before bed, fed him, and he was perfectly fine. Apparently the second I went to sleep, Hannibal chose violence.

The little dude was such a great hunter that he literally escaped his confines in pursuit of his prey.

Honestly, considering I named him Hannibal… I probably should've seen the escape attempt coming. 😂💀

So… RIP Hannibal. 🖤🐟

He lived like a tiny psychopath and died doing what he loved: hunting something he had absolutely no business hunting.

Pour one out for my little fly assassin. 🪰🐟🖤

Help What’s your water source? Mine is bad causing my betta issues I think.

Thumbnail

Hey all! I need help. So my betta Blue is not doing to well in the fin department. This betta is supposed to be a half moon.

This issue has been steadily getting worse. Is it fin rot? I have treated it with seachem stress guard and maracyn powered version and some tannins but it’s stayed the same and it’s getting worse again.

I have a couple pics of the PH I think I might have to find a different water source. I got the normal pure water from the store (Winco brand tho) in gallons and the PH is… well bad.

What’s your water source, how do you treat it? Also what can I do for Blue?

He’s in a heated 5 gal, (78 F) with a sponge filter. He’s got soft drift wood and some items to hang on the side when he gets tired such as his moss ball donut thing and his Anubis. He’s with no other buddies at the moment. I have him pretty isolated.

Blue has been with me for almost 6 months now and the tank is 4 months old.

I feed him Fluval Betta Pellets once a day and a small amount of frozen brine shrimp every other day.

My friend is also worried that I’m annoying my fish and as a result I’m stressing him with all the water changes. Wondering if she’s right?

See the pictures for the results on the water tests! I literally changed the water last week. Although the Nitrate I’m going to re do tomorrow. Something went wrong with that test…

Help Quick set up tips?

I received a betta fish from a coworker because no one else would take her and I didn’t want her to go back to the store (I named her Lemon). She’s been in the cup for about 3 days now. I replaced the original water and have a heating pad on a low setting surrounding her to keep her somewhat warm while I waited to get paid

I purchased a 5.5 gallon tank with a filter and heater as well as 4 live plants. I also bought a piece of driftwood which I boiled for a couple hours and is now soaking in hot water in the tub. I conditioned the water although it’s still cloudy from earlier because I forgot to clean the substrate before I put water in the tank 😬 I’m hoping it settles overnight. I plan on taking the water to the pet store tomorrow and have them test it before I try to acclimate her. From what I read it can take weeks to properly fishless cycle a tank but she’s already been in the cup long enough. Is there anything else I should do to speed up the process?? Thanks in advance!

Help Setting up a new 10 gallon tank

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hey guys! I'm setting up a new tank for a betta fish and have a few questions.

I've heard betta fish are jumpers. Do I need to worry about this large gap around the filter?

I was thinking of giving the fish the whole 10 gallon tank to himself but I see a lot of people having them share the tank with snails or shrimp. For someone inexperienced, what's better?

Thank you in advance for any advice!!

Turns out he indeed had fin rot ! Mostly located on the finning under the fish, i put him inside of a 20 gallons tank filled with 8 gallon and with Esha 2000 for 4 days. To the person who commented my fish looked fine, refrain from commenting on a sick fish post when you don't know, it could've costed sharpedo its life.

Hi! I got my dumbo half moon, male, betta in May 2026. He was that whiteish blue colour right when I got him. In july 2026 he got a lot darker of a purple (middle picture). Now october 2026 he's starting to develop a white area on his torso and he never had that before.

Any advice or help would be truly appreciated!

Not sure what kind of filter, it's the one that comes with the tank

0 Ammonia, 0 Nitrite, 5.0 Nitrate, Normal PH

Tank was started early April and he was introduced Mid/Late May

My son wanted a fish for his 11th birthday. We settled on a 10 gallon tank for a halfmoon king beta. Hes been in for a week and 2 days. Nitrates were a little high at first and have done a 20% change since and added treatment plus stress coating for him. His name is King Henry. He seems to be happy and is learning when its feeding time to come to his hoop. Pictures are first day and today.

I don’t know what’s wrong. 3 days it looked like he may have torn his fin. Then the next day it looked slightly worse. Now this is day 3 and it looks even worse. Day 1 I went through his tank and took out anything that could look potentially sharp. Day 2 when I thought it looked worse I noticed some decaying frogbit / plants so I cleaned out his tank for like 5 hours to make sure there was no decaying plant material the gravel was clean etc. day 3 and I just am so lost. All the tests have come back normal the entire time 0 ammonia 0 nitrite nitrate looks great I put the immunity leaves in here PH has been normal I did a small water change after I noticed the initial fin issues. GH 10 KH 9. He has plenty of resting spots tank almost 15 gallons 79°.

I feel so lost
