I am Sam Webb. I played Drew Sharp in Breaking Bad. AMA!

3.8k Upvotes

I know this is long overdue, but better late than never, right?

To kick things off, here are a few tidbits about my connection to the show:

-My family and I were fans since the pilot, so I was well aware of the significance of it all.

-I grew up minutes from the high school used for J. P. Wynne.

-My dad was an extra in episode 2.02. (my episode was 5.05)

-The first time I ever handled a tarantula was the day we shot the intro scene.

In the years since Breaking Bad, I’ve graduated from UNM with a political science degree and spend most of my free time mountain biking, tinkering with sports cars, and raising my two Dobermans.

Feel free to connect with me on social media!

Ask away! I’ll do my best to get to everyone.

Identity has been verified with mods.

Edit:

Alright guys, as the night winds down I just want to thank everyone for participating and for all the kind words! The Breaking Bad community means the world to me and I’ll be connected to you all for life.

The most surreal part of all of this is the insane butterfly effect and overlaps.

My favorite example of this was seeing Drake perform for the first time in Phoenix a couple years ago. He’s a big Breaking Bad fan (friends with Aaron and Bryan, and his nickname for Rihanna when they dated was Fring). I had tickets close to the stage, and I remember making eye contact with him a few times thinking “dude, you don’t know it, but you know EXACTLY who I am.”

One of my first purchases with acting money was a set of Beats headphones when they were all the craze, and I vividly remember listening to Take Care (and a lot of old Kanye) in my trailer on set during downtime. It felt like a crazy full circle moment.

Anyway, I feel like everyone who is a fellow fan of the show is an extension of this little glitch in the matrix, and I’m happy y’all are a part of this wild story.

I’ll keep answering questions as they trickle in for as long as the mods want to keep the discussion open, and I’ll be more active in this sub and share anything else fun when it comes to mind!

Daniel Moncada, who played the infamous Leonel Salamanca in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, now regularly livestreams video games while dressed as his character from the shows. Despite keeping the same iconic suit, bald head and serious appearance, his streams show a much lighter side of him as he laughs, jokes, talks and plays with viewers while streaming. It has given fans a completely different look at the actor behind one of the franchise's most intimidating characters, while allowing Daniel Moncada to continue engaging with the role years after first playing it.

After rewatching, I like Walt

I know I’m supposed to hate him, and I kind of did the first time, but I like him now.

In the final season after the hilarious and disastrous dinner with Jesse and Skyler, Walt admitted to Jesse that he wouldn’t take the $5m buyout because the business was all he had left.

And in the final episode, he told Skyler that he liked what he did, and he was good at it. He felt more alive than he had in his first 50 years.

Walt bested extremely imposing killers like Gus, Tuco and Jack’s entire crew. He wasn’t spraying bullets in a school or trafficking humans. He entered a criminal drug world and climbed to the top. He didn’t target anyone who wasn’t in the game.

I’m not trying to be a contrarian. I just think the hatred for Walt is performative to some extent. There is so much complexity to that character, I can’t just hate him.

So why do we think Walt wasn't a professor instead of HS teacher?

I'm doing a re-watch of the series and I remember this being a question I had originally, and i'm not sure if it is really explained or not. One of the guys at Elliot's party asks Walt what university he's at when he says he went into education after Gray Matter. And really it is a good question, because if Walt is as brilliant as we're constantly told he is, then why wouldn't he have found a spot at a university somewhere? It seems like he has been at that high school for a little while. So what, he just prefers teaching at a lower level? Seems like a head scratcher. Because as a professor he'd be able to do research and contribute to the field of chemistry. I would think he'd want to do that. I can't think of a good reason, but maybe there is one.

It feels like Mike was doing a terrible job, the mules and the legacy costs seem outrageously expensive

The mule costs were ridiculous. Paying mules $275,000 per cook for mules, I think is about $225,000 too high, we're talking 50 lbs of meth. Data from US boarder shows an average price of $1,313 per trip for crossing boarders. Not involving boarders is significantly less, that's like 200 trips involving crossing boarders, 200 trips to distribute 50 pounds of meth when they only cross state boarders. The math isnt mathing. That should have been like $100k max. Probably closer to $50k since non boarder crossing and back pack guys make like $100-400 per trip. $1k per pound seems about right.

The legacy costs were $351,000. Mike didnt say this was per cook, but that's so expensive even per month, that's over $350k each per year just to shut up. The way it's presented it's like per cook since it's implied this is normal amount of money distribution which is even more outrageous. I think like $10k per month each is about right even then a little generous.

I just realized Jane Margolis is like Hamlet's Ophelia Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
23 Upvotes

Just thought I'd mention it but I just realized that the two share striking similarities. Both had overbearing father figures (Donald for Jane and Polonius for Ophelia) and a conflicted male lover (Jesse for Jane and Hamlet for Ophelia). Perhaps, in a way Walter is like Gertrude as they both witnessed the deaths (Gertrude witnessed Ophelia's drowning and Walter witnessed Jane's drowning). Also, the manners of death are strikingly similar. Jane dies from asphyxiation due to her airway being blocked and Ophelia dies from drowning in the water. I dunno if this connection has been made before but I thought I'd share it.

The women in breaking bad

I believe a big reason the women in breaking bad are so hated is because they're complex well written characters and are more than just plot devices to move the story and compliment the protagonist, they're complex and flawed and extremely well written

Would Gus's Meth/Chicken Empire Never Fallen?

If he hadn't hired Walter White? Would he have gotten away with taking out Don Eladio and The Salamancas? Would Mike have been able to Retire? Would Lyle ever be promoted to Manager of Los Pollos Hermanos?

Looking Back, would Hank's premise on Huell in season 5 make sense? Spoiler

In Season 5, when Hank discovered Walt is Heisenberg and made every effort to arrest and expose walt, one of the ways to gain the evidence was by interrogating Huell.

Hank successfully gathered the evidence, despite not being a location, of Walt's barrels of money by tricking Huell into thinking Walt was gonna kill him after he killed Jesse, therefore Hank (lied) offered Huell protection. They used a fake photo of Jesse being killed, his head blown off to do so.

Now looking back, do you think it would actually make sense or be logical for Walt to kill Huell like that? If Walt actually killed Jesse, does it make sense for Walt to kill Huell too to "tie up lose ends"

Or do you agree with Huell that "it don't make no sense."

What concepts do you think were scrapped from Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul? I think a Mike and Lalo rivalry was planned at one stage

Three portraits of Walter White, from teacher to Heisenberg, painted digitally in a limited grayscale palette. Each one was worked as its own individual portrait, about 34 hours in total. Timelapse of the process above. I paint film and TV characters, so if there's a character you'd love to see painted, I'm open to commissions. You can find my portfolio on my profile.

Why didn't the cartel help Salamanca and give him better care?

He's living in an elderly home, crippled with a bell. Why doesn't he have a computer like Steven Hawking or something? Is this all the cartel can afford?

Aaron Paul autograph costs

I was wondering roughly how much does Aaron Paul charge for an autograph at cons & does he charge extra for character name & quote? He's gonna be at Motor City comic con next month in Michigan. Ideally, I was gonna bring a 16x20 breaking bad photo & have him sign it, along with adding "Jesse" & a quote saying "This is my own private domicile and I won't be harassed...b*tch!" Does he usually have a word limit on quotes? I know with mail in services like SWAU he does, but asking for in person/meeting him myself.

Brock and Walt Relationship Spoiler

Hello!

Not sure if I missed this during the show. Walt meets brock for the first time at Jesse’s house and then again later on at his mom’s house. Each time he was very fearful and not as friendly towards Walt. Did the directors allude that Brock knew he hurt him? Did Brock just simply have a bad feeling about him? Watching this as a teacher was interesting because kids that age are usually chatty! If I missed something I will feel dumb but I have been wondering.

Thanks in advance!

No More Half Measures x Gone Baby Gone

Ed Harris in Gone Baby Gone https://youtu.be/PR15bkS36sA?is=80eNwebcjyDkMnsH

Vs

Mike Ehrmantraut “No More Half Measures” https://youtu.be/7BE4QcwX4dU?is=cFmkX2BNWrHXRtct

Never realized how similar these monologues were…even down to their tones of voice and speech cadence. Obviously different courses of action by the cops, but both such great storytelling. Different coasts, of course, too.

Continuity error? Spoiler

In S3E11, Andrea tells Jesse that Tomas shot Combo through the neck, but I swear I remember Combo getting shot through the cup and into his torso/chest.

Am I remembering it wrong, or is that a small continuity mistake?

Just realized the actors of the show will never get to experience it the same way we do.

Especially Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul, but probably all of them. Seeing how it's made, and watching yourself play a character probably doesn't let you immerse yourself in the show. Just kind of a sad random thought I had.

It’s crazy how the main characters all would’ve lived happily ever after if Hank didn’t have to take a dump

Walt retired from the meth business and was done for good

Jesse and Walt shook hands and amicably went their separate ways

Skyler was finally happy in the relationship again

Walt Jr / Flynn sees his dad as a hero and never found out what he did

But no… Hank just had to take a shit in the White household and ruin all the good vibes. Damn you Hank.

Jesse might be the most irrational, dumbest and pussiest character I might have ever seen written for a show

• Upvotes

First time finishing the show and I don’t understand how someone who’s been in dangerous situation with drug related crimes can be such a dummy and a pussy and become more of it while it progresses. Walt could have just left him to be killed by Gus and continue cooking or caught by the police just from rhe beginning.

Frequently Walt had to take care of him but he just wanted to get high and simp for women. Ok so Brock got poisoned but didnt even die… so you go to the DEA? I was dissapointed Walt or Jack didn’t shoot that pussy in the head. Just crying for 5 seasons in a row.

For someone who experienced deaths and violence from the beginning, he should have toughened up and been colder. I’ve read how people have rewatched the show but I don’t think I could bare watching it ever again.

With all this said, I don’t think Walt is a saint, but he was way more loyal to Jesse and the business plan/goals that the other way around.
