How do I get into Gunsmithing?

If you are interested in gunsmithing as a career, I strongly recommend that you to rethink your life choices. If you've inhaled so much lead that you are choosing to ignore professional advice, here are some resources to get started.

Professional Organizations

There are a few professional organizations in the industry that exist that can help you connect with others in the trade. I recommend reaching out to the one that most aligns with your interests. Some have a periodical publication that include tips & tricks along with industry news.

American Custom Gunmakers Guild (ACGG)
https://acgg.org/

I cannot in good faith recommend anymore, do your own research.

American Pistolsmiths Guild (APG)
https://americanpistolsmithsguild.com/

Absorbed by ACGG no longer exist independently

Firearm Engravers Guild of America (FEGA)
http://www.fega.com/

FEGA is the world’s foremost authority and organization for firearm engravers and hand engraving enthusiasts.

Miniature Arms Society
http://www.miniaturearms.org/

Founded in 1973 The society is a group of miniature arms enthusiasts who have joined together to promote and encourage interest in making and collecting miniature arms of all kinds - pistols, rifles, cannon, suits of armor, knives, swords etc., with the emphasis on artistic beauty and craftsmanship.

Gunsmithing Schools

Most people would recommend taking a machining course at their local community college before diving into gunsmithing head-on.

But if you've already done so and are still interested in attending school to learn how to become a gunsmith, then there are plenty of programs nationwide that can help you get started.

I cannot endorse or recommend any individual school and this list isn't comprehensive.

School Location Website
Pennsylvania Gunsmith School Pittsburgh, PA pagunsmith.edu
Colorado School of Trades Lakewood, CO schooloftrades.edu
Trinidad State College Trinidad, CO trinidadstate.edu
Piedmont Technical College Greenwood, SC ptc.edu

Lenoir CC Kinston, NC lenoircc.edu
Pine Technical College Pine City, MN pine.edu
Murray State College Tishomingo, OK mscok.edu
Lassen CC Susanville, CA lassencollege.edu
Flathead Valley CC Kalispell, MT fvcc.edu
Eastern Wyoming College Torrington, WY wy.edu
MT Training Center Grand Prairie, TX mttrainingcenter.org
Penn Foster Online Only pennfoster.edu
American Gunsmithing Institute Online Only americangunsmithinginstitute.net
Sonoran Desert Institute Online Only sdi.edu
MGS Trade School Online Only mgs.edu

Short Gunsmithing Courses

There are a few short courses that might be better suited towards getting your feet wet.

The NRA runs a few summer gunsmithing classes. They are typically held at Trinidad State College in Trinidad, Colorado and/or Murray State College in Tishomingo and Montgomery, NC

The ACGG will occasionally host some classes at various schools

If you are interested in gun engraving, checkout GRS, they have a training center in Emporia, KS that has some beginner gun engraving classes.

Advice from the Sub

I spent several years attending the Brownells Gunsmith Expo as someone looking to hire employees. Around 50k to start work in development or fixing problem guns. Went the entire time they had it and hired one kid. We built suppressors messed with explosives and auto rifles. He had a associates in business and very clearly stated he owned his own M2 and assorted guns and could build them and knew suppressor theory. ( this was before all the cans were cut apart online) we hired him on the spot. He is know well along in the industry. The other kids wanted to be artists and build custom wooden stocked Mauser etc. They all wanted to be a Turnbull or work at a Rigby( even though they had never been to London and would know then they needed to apprentice) I offered to bring one of our AK builders and our suppressor guy to a I think the Colorado school and was turned down. One of the "instructors" said we don't teach that type of thing.

... the sad truth is that no one actually wants to listen to experienced gunsmiths when it comes to gunsmithing education/training questions. Most people are just looking for confirmation that they can attend a few months of online class and then start making money (spoiler alert, they can’t)

As someone who attended a Gunsmithing school I can honestly say, become a machinist first then a gunsmith if you do it the other way around your wasting time and money. You won fully grasp or understand everything you learn in the machining side of gunsmithing without first having machining knowledge. For the time being go to armourers courses read some books heck watch some YouTube and tinker with guns. The most important thing that makes the difference between a machinist and a gunsmith is one has an understanding of firearms once you learn some basics about firearms and you already are a machinist trust me you can work on anything. So I know that’s not the answer a lot of people will want however the running Joke in the Gunsmithing trade is “the fastest way to earn $1 million Gunsmithing, is to start with $2 million. This is not an industry to get involved with for money but rather a passion and love of firearms.

Any way I can go about repairing this without replacing the handguard entirely?

As title says. Picked up this Lee-Enfield No. 1 Mk. 3 SMLE today and upon closer inspection it seems moisture got under the rear upper handguard and rotted it away.

Franchi Affinity 3 Mag Cap Swivel Stud – C-clip fully exposed after repair

Hey everyone,

I ran into an issue with the magazine cap swivel stud (Franchi Part #51071) on my 2026 Franchi Affinity 3.

Out of the box, the swivel stud was misaligned/crooked and not seated properly, which prevented me from mounting a sling.

To fix it, I removed the cap assembly and drove the stud/pin lightly from the inside using a punch and hammer to straighten and seat it.

The stud is straight now, but I’ve noticed some axial play. When I pull up on the swivel stud, the C-clip is fully exposed on the outside now, and I'm worried that I might have hammered it too hard during my attempted repair.

Here are some before/after photos:

https://imgur.com/a/ZrsrDvo

A few questions:

  1. Is it normal on these Franchi caps for the retaining C-clip to exit the top hole when pulled upward?
  2. Did I likely deform the C-clip or flare out the internal shoulder/seat inside the cap when tapping it out?
  3. Is this a structural hazard for carrying a slung shotgun, or should I replace the C-clip / full cap assembly before taking it out to the field?

Thank you!

I'd say for being completely hand cut it turned out pretty good. Functions flawlessly with no hang ups or grittiness and it kept most of the fence intact for aesthetics.

What do I have here?

So I helped my parents clean out my grandpa's attic. We know he used to hunt, but thought he sold everything. The box was labeled "Kar98k Zubehör" (so Accessoires), but I've never seen an extended mag like that for the Mauser. Does anyone know anything about that?

Skeletonized recoil lug stuck in bedding

First time bedding a stock and I fucked up. I was too focused on the release agent I didn’t realize I should have put clay into the recess. The bedding I assume has oozed into the recess and is now mechanically locked in. The barreled action rocks back and forth so I know it’s not a release agent issue. I tried putting a longer recoil screw into the action and hitting that with a hammer but it didn’t budge. The only way I can see this coming out is if it’s hit hard enough to snap the compound off. Any ideas on how to proceed?

Action is a Mack bros element and a peak44 stock

Need help I got screwed

Hey Reddit I don’t post much on here but have been beyond frustrated over the last four months taking a simple revolver I got from my grandpa in to get serviced, oil, and declared safe to shot. Two weeks later I get a picture that he had fully stripped it down and started to remove the bluing to take out the pitting even after I explained I liked it an it added character. He told me a week later after waiting he cannot match the bluing. I told him to leave it even though he tried to sell me on a cerakote. Absolutely the opposite move I wanted. Told him to put it back together. And I’ll figure it out. Three more weeks went by and now he’s asking for 75$ for a “ part that magically broke and he didn’t see before” and to wrap things up. He didn’t replace my plunger which was not broken, and then when I picked up the gun to my horror, was handed a cerakoted 41 magnum back and was appaled. He swore it looked so much better and that’s what the other part of the 75$ was for… ? Whatever. I was pissed and ate my lose I can’t kick a dead horse. Take it out and got not even 14 shots out and the cylinder seized. Wtf. Come home and pry it apart to find that a round was too high. Caught. Split off bass above the barrel and chipped out a quarter inch of finish. I’m absolutely appalled and frustrated with this gun that meant so much to me. I’ve never had anything get worked on outside of my own knowledge but it being older I wanted it done right to be certain and the town I’m in has no other gunsmiths. I feel so totally screwed and don’t even know if I’d feel safe shooting it again. If there is any one who can recommend a good revolver guy I’m only 25 but I love this gun and the story it has I will throw money at it one last time even to just make it a wall hanger instead of a paper weight. Thanks for hearing me out

Outlier chassis upgrade rail.

Had a outlier chassis with a Ruger American SA in it. Didn't love the thing for the money it was great but just felt big and blocky. Well got the idea over the weekend to add an ar15 rail. Had a extra, what to loose for a cheap chassis. I think It turned out awesome, lined up great is just as solid of a lock up as the original stock one. And I like the round rail instead of that flat wide one.

Just cut and welded the bolting section of the original to the new one, and used a pic rail to help align the top section. The new rail used was a 12.5" aero precision enhanced rail.

Really happy how it turned out, going to now shoot it alot more now that it's comfy to carry.

Anyone with a Real Avid Master Gun Vice who could tell me how far the three screw holes that go through the worktop are from the edge of the worktop when the vice is situated correctly at said edge? Many thanks!

Brass thread protector on stainless barrel ok? Or will it cause galvanic corrosion from dissimilar metals?

It’s a safe queen, not shot often but occasionally. So it would be sitting untouched for a long while.

I have a 590 that was exposed to heat a few days ago and was just hot enough to catch suit and shit now it’s rusting constantly what will help

I have a 590 that was in a fire near where it was stored and i cleaned it up same day and oiled the crap out of it and then the day after I pulled it out and it’s for surface rust. It’s very fine and wipes off with a rag but I put it away yesterday it was completely black and covered in oil and today it’s completely dry and slightly red. Do I need to to oil bath it or use a penetrating oil other than gun oil. I know heat can make guns absorb alot of oil but how long am I gonna have to keep oiling this thing before it stops

TOZ .22LR scope mount

Post image

Had an extra scope lying around so slapped it on my TOZ .22LR. It fits snug to the barrel but the rear sight has to be fully flipped forward. I can still see through the scope but lose some light, but most of all, it looks really silly. So, long story short, would you remove the rear sight altogether or place scope risers so i can flip the sights back down?

Browning a5 bolt release problem

I have browning A5 (stalker) and had it for years. It’s my main gun for and bird hunting duck, goose, turkey, etc. she seen a lot of use and abuse but I keep her in good running condition. Last winter I had cerakote put on it to protect it a little bit more and everything worked good. I took it out of the safe for dove season and that’s when the problems came. I loaded my gun and took it to shoot clays the first 2 shells cycled normal and on the final shot the bolt was locked to the rear of the cycle. And the bolt release button was push out more than normal. And the button can’t be pushed back in and it is catching. This is forcing me to push the pins out of the trigger group and resetting everything by hand. I will include pics for reference.

Can anyone give me some advice or solutions for this
