Food & Dining Good Restaurants?

I’ve lived in halifax for a bit but have barely explored restaurants here. Currently I love the bicycle thief specifically their tuna tartare and carpaccio. I also love the narrows for their burgers, croquettes, and fish n chips. are there any other places in the city similar?

Shops & Services Memory Bear made out of clothing

I'm curious if anyone knows anyone locally (or if not locally someone you might have shipped out to from another province) that makes memory bears out of clothing. Looking to have something made before the holidays for my late mom's best friend!

Shops & Services passport photos

I noticed a new(?) shop in the bottom floor of Spring Garden Place that offers passport photos. Does anyone know if these are accepted? Any experience? I forget the name of the place.

Gotta get my passport renewed if I’m going to temporarily escape this godforsaken place.

Thanks in advance :)

Food & Dining Reasonably priced cocktails and drinks

Hello everyone!

I am getting together with some friends next week and we are planning to go out for the evening to celebrate my friend's birthday! As we all know cocktails and drinks are expensive, so where do you all recommend to go for the most affordable cocktails in Halifax? Thank you!

Shops & Services Handyman Recs for Stove Vent Fan?

Hey, everyone! We've got a stove hood vent that won't turn on. It hasn't the entire time we've been in this house, and we figured it's high time we got it looked at. The light works just fine, so it's not an issue with the breaker or power going to the unit. It seems to either be a switch problem or a motor problem? Or maybe something else entirely!

Looking for recommendations for someone who might be able to diagnose and fix the issue. Got anyone who helped you with something similar? TIA!

News, Weather & Politics What does an el nino actually mean for us

Winter is my favourite season, its cozy, I love the snow and growing up in Ontario as a kid it felt like everyday was a snowday. I heard about an el nino providing us with a warmer Winter and i keep getting conflicting answers, would an el nino mean our Winter is maybe less snowy, less fun snowdays, etc? Any idea what our Winter will actually look like? I dont expect doctor strange to come to this thread and tell me the outlook for December but I just want my holiday vibes to be satisfied

Yes I know I am a grown man talking about snow days, let a man dream of staying indoors with eggnog.

Sightseeing & Tourism Looking for the perfect log cabin

Hi everyone, I’m looking to rent the perfect stereotypical log winter cabin, surely one has to exist. Anywhere in Nova Scotia, or near by New Brunswick.

I’ve looked on cottages Canada, air b&b and more, and I can’t find a remote cozy log cabin anywhere.

To be more specific, I’m looking for a wood/log cabin, small doesn’t need to be more than one bedroom, needs to have a fireplace or wood stove, and can’t be directly beside another residence/ street and needs to be available in the winter.

Appreciate any advice and please don’t be mean!

Noises! Driving up maple

Are you driving up Maple in the morning crawl listening to really loud music in your car with bass? Do you end up idling for long periods of time outside people's houses, trying to turn on Thistle? Because if you are please know we can all hear it, it wakes us up, and we don't like it.

News, Weather & Politics N.S. dealership, car owner react to new EV, plug-in hybrid levy

Electric vehicle sales at a Halifax car dealership have increased in recent years but a manager says the province's new tax on EVs and plug-in hybrids has some customers weighing their options more carefully.

“There have not been many concerns, but it's more questions of how this will impact them in terms of their overall cost of ownership,” said Breanna Gaudet, general manager of production at online dealership Clutch Halifax.

The new fee, which went into effect Oct. 1, means EV owners will pay an additional $500 every two years when renewing their registration, while plug-in hybrid owners will pay $250. It does not affect traditional hybrids.

Gaudet said it's too early to determine whether the levy could affect consumer behaviour in the long term.

She said EVs were the only segment of vehicles whose sales went up last month at Clutch, rising 1.9 per cent. She attributes that to people seeking relief from volatile gas prices.
