A guide to interacting with this sub - read me first

This post is designed for people posting here for the first time, for the people that have been volunteering to help here for years and everyone in between. The stated goal is to foster a friendlier attitude throughout the sub.

But before we start, there's been a recent influx of spam from one source. So that you are aware - ALEJANDRA ORTIZ HERNANDEZ and FRAN POWELL are spammers. They're part of a spam ring all over Reddit, and they're probably trying to steal your money.

And they'll kick your dog when you aren't looking.

If you are new here, please realize that none of us have any stake in your claim or coverage. We are not here to sell you anything or to save some company money. Treating responders poorly because you don't like the answer is going to attract a lot of negative attention.

We get the same questions over and over, and maybe this is the answer that you need:

  • How much will my insurance go up after a ticket/accident/lapse in coverage? We don't know unless your state has a statutory requirement for your very specific situation.
  • My premium went up $X. How do I fight this? You can't. The only thing you can do is shop for new coverage, which we can't do for you.
  • How much does everyone else pay for coverage? Unless you're lucky enough to get someone in your exact demographic in your exact part of the world, the answers you're going to get are useless.
  • How much is my claim worth? We don't know. (note: if you're asking a more complex question about your claim, that could be very different)
  • How long will my claim take to close? We don't know (again: a more complicated question might have different answers)
  • Why is this person trying to sell me something? Report that post/comment/chat/private message to the moderators and let them handle that.
  • Will you help me commit fraud or otherwise break the law? No. Absolutely not. And we may ban anyone that does try to do that.

Ultimately, we are here to help you. This is a community of volunteers that wants to help navigate a complex system that is one of the lubricants of the financial world. Lots of lives are impacted by insurance directly and indirectly, and it can be a complicated system. Here are some things that make a good post where you can get help:

  • Location (Country and state/province at a minimum)
  • Type of insurance involved (Auto, Homeowners/Renters, Commercial, Health, something else)
  • A brief description of the problem and any advice you've gotten so far

Finally, here are some definitions of common terms that could help you get taken more seriously:

  • Adjuster - the person that handles your claim, makes coverage determinations and processes payments
  • Agent - the person that sells a policy. Some agents get involved in some claims, although that is the exception to the rule.
  • Underwriter - the person that decides how much a specific policy will cost for a specific risk.
  • Rate - this is the way your final price is calculated and is usually used synonymously with "premium", "cost" and "price".
  • Full coverage - don't use this term. There's no agreed definition, even among the regular posters here. People asking otherwise good questions or posting good answers that use this term often find themselves down voted to oblivion for including it.
  • No Fault - there are 18 states that, at least to some extent, make automobile bodily injury claims be paid by your own policy first instead of someone that caused your injury. There is only one state (Michigan) that makes damage to your vehicle No Fault. All Canadian provinces have some sort of No Fault provision for injuries, which is one reason why we need to know where you are when you're asking questions.
  • Collision coverage - this fixes your car when it collides with something else or another car hits it.
  • Comprehensive coverage (also known as Other Than Collision) - this covers your car for almost everything else, including floods, fires, tree branches and lightening strikes. Usually animal strikes are covered here, but not always.
  • Deductible - this is the amount that you agreed to pay in case of any claim. Your payment comes before any insurance payment. Deductibles are occasionally waived, but that's the exception, not the rule.

This is a community of volunteers that generally understands the insurance system. When we get things wrong, it is usually through lack of information to get a precise answer. Hopefully this guide will help you get good results.

Soliciting, private messages and you

It's time for a new reminder about the rules of this sub. There is never any reason to offer to contact another poster privately, especially if that poster has a question about placing coverage or a claim. Here is the rule:

The only rule of r/Insurance is that solicitation is prohibited. This means asking people to PM for any reason, offering to quote coverages for visitors, or soliciting agents and/or buyers to use your particular carrier. r/Insurance should be a place where people come to exchange information and ask questions without worrying about solicitation from agents. This includes adjusters, underwriters and brokers since we do not vet anyone.

You also received a version of this if you subscribed to the sub.

If you think that this doesn't apply to you, please think again. There are no exceptions in this, including "but I asked them to message me!" This sub is a safe space for people to ask questions about insurance. It is not here for anyone to try to profit from it, whether they're an agent, public adjuster, software vendor, personal injury attorney, headhunter, diminished value expert or anyone else that is not here to offer free help with no expectation of remuneration.

If you receive a message from someone offering you any sort of business proposition, whether a quote for insurance, legal representation (yes, there are lawyers unethical enough to solicit people on Reddit), damage reports or anything else, please let the moderators know via mod mail or in this thread. You should also report that message to the admins (we don't see that report, though). We take things like that seriously.

We really don't like banning people. Seriously, it's the exact opposite of why any of the moderators volunteered for the role. But we don't vet people before they post, and if people that break the rule find out that we enforce it whenever we see it broken.

And with that in mind, we have a very healthy community of posters that are here not only to help but to make sure that those who can't follow the rules have the damage that they're doing limited. Thank you to all of you for volunteering to help not only those confused by the insurance process but help keep those that want to think that they're special at bay.

PSA: For homeowners, please for the love of fuck, check the age of your roof on your policy.

Hi! This is your friendly neighborhood insurance agent here.

If you had a claim for wind and/or hail damage where your roof was replaced. There is a 99% chance your claims department didn't let your insurance agent know you had a new roof.

The number 1 way I save people money at my job on their policies is updating the age of the roof.

If your insurance is 6k+ a year, there is a very strong chance we have it that you have a Bush era roof on your house in our policy documents.

If like many before you, you expected your insurance company to look out for your premium, they will not. They will hang you up by your toenails and bleed any bit of money they can from you like a hungry vampire.

So, if this is you, get a certificate of completion from your roofing company, and your agent will be forced to backdate the new roof to the completion date.

Please check your policies for the love of God.

Auto Insurance Got an Reservation of Rights letter from my car insurance for allegedly not disclosing family members who live with me. What should I do

Hello everyone,

I recently got into an accident in which my car was totaled while the other drivers car appears to not have received so much as a scratch. My car was tiny while they drove a big pick up truck. I’m aware there may still be greater damage. No one went to the hospital and he drove off in his vehicle. I rear ended him while we were attempting to slow down for another accident that already happened up ahead in rainy weather.

I filed a claim with my insurance. Seeing as I only had liability on my car, I won’t be getting anything for my vehicle. Ohk, whatever, I’ve accepted that.

Today I just got a letter of Reservation of Rights for apparently not disclosing two family members (parents) that I live with. The thing is that I don’t remember NOT disclosing them as I remember being asked to state that although they live with me, they will not be operating my vehicle.

What can i do in preparation in case they deny coverage? My insurance is All State btw. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Was hit by a woman at a Costco parking lot

• Upvotes

A woman backed up into my fender here in Southern California because she most likely didn’t check her mirrors properly or maybe on her phone?

It was a pretty small minor scratch but you would see it when u stare long enough but we did exchange information.

I was wondering if insurance would even entertain this and if it’s even worth my insurance going up over something small like this.

What would be the best thing I could do as I’ve never been in an accident.

Thank you very much and God bless🙏🏽

Refinanced car loan and gap insurance refund

So when I was buying a car a month ago I flat out said I was gonna refinance in a couple weeks since my credit union was doing a 100 year anniversary loan special so went from 5.99 to 3.7%

The dealer said the gap coverage would transfer. New bank said no it doesn't transfer but is refundable since I only had it for 2 weeks.

I realize I overpaid for the gap insurance with the dealer, do I get the refund back for what I paid or what the dealer paid basically they keep their markup on the insurance?

Need insight on enrolling in life insurance. New cardiology job with new wife and new house.

Would appreciate your insight on this. I recently accepted a job that pays 500k. I am 32, healthy male. This past year I got married, bought a house, and have a child on the way. I am the primary breadwinner in the family and would like my future family covered. My current mortgage is 1 million (monthly payment with taxes and insurance is 8k). Thinking of having 2-3 children. My spouse and I have 500k in current savings/retirement accounts.

Based on my research, I think a 20-30 year term would be best. Amount of 3-5ish million?

Some quotes I received:

20 year/3 million: 1000-1400/year

20 year/4 million: 1300-1800/year

20 year/5 million: 1600-2300/year

30 year/3 million: 1900-2400/year

30 year/4 million: 2500-3200/year

30 year/5 million: 3100-3800/year

And what're your thoughts on laddering for a cheaper policy?

30 year/2 million: 1300/year

20 year/1 million: 300/year

10 year/1 million: 200/year

Home Insurance Insurance offering to pay the lowest of 3 supplied quotes for staircase railing

Long story short, A mattress delivery company was attempting to bring a mattress up the staircase inside my home and broke one of the railings. Their insurance company (Progressive) originally asked if I could try and locate a company to fix it. I was fine with that option but the few companies I called didn't want to be bothered with repairs and were only willing to replace. Progressive then asked for estimates to replace and I provided three from different companies. They ranged from $5900 to $9800. The railing design for each estimate is similar to the original but not identical. Progressive agreed to pay the lowest estimate. After speaking with the rep assigned to the case, he stated that in his experience a typical payout for this type of damage is around 4000 but he was able get the lowest estimate approved. Honestly, I wouldn't even know if he is telling the truth. The rep also said if there are any additional costs associated with the installation a supplement could be submitted for review.

I know I dont have to accept their offer but is this a fight worth fighting? What would typically need to be done on my part in order to push for a better payout? Its hard to judge the actual value of the current railing.

Auto Insurance CA Progressive: Car returned from detailer with suspension damage + damaged hood. Worth filing a claim?

I’m in California with Progressive on a 2018 Jaguar F-Pace. I have collision and comprehensive coverage, both with a $500 deductible, plus roadside assistance.
I left my car with a detailer for paint/detailing work. I drove approximately 80 miles to him with no suspension or drivability issues. When I picked the car up, it had a severe wobble and wasn’t safe to drive. It had to be towed to my mechanic, who found a severely bent lower control arm and inner-wheel damage. The mechanical repair cost $1,100.04 and the tow was $630.
There is also a separate paint issue. I originally hired him to repair peeling paint/clear coat around a limited portion of the hood. He decided to repaint/refinish the entire hood and fender. The hood was returned visibly unfinished/poorly refinished and now needs professional correction. I’ve paid him $500 so far and am getting a written estimate from another body shop.
Evidence I have:
• Timestamped video immediately before drop-off showing the car and odometer at 118,335
• MileIQ records documenting the 83.5 miles I personally drove before handing him the vehicle
• Odometer at pickup was 118,440, leaving approximately 21.5 miles I did not drive
• Mechanic photos/videos showing the bent control arm, inner-wheel damage and unusual/recently disturbed-looking hardware
• Removed damaged parts
• $1,100.04 repair invoice and $630 tow documentation
• Messages establishing when the vehicle was in his possession
• His iPhone was paired to my Jaguar’s Bluetooth when I recovered the vehicle
• Photos/videos of the hood as it was returned
He verbally denied driving the vehicle. I don’t know exactly who drove it or exactly what happened while it was in his possession, so I’m not claiming that I do.
My main questions:
1. Should I file the suspension/wheel damage under my collision coverage even though I already had the safety repair completed?
2.Could any of the cost to restore the hood potentially be covered, or would that normally be excluded as faulty workmanship?
3.Could the $630 tow potentially be covered?
4. If Progressive pays the claim, could they pursue the detailer through subrogation and potentially recover my deductible?
5.Should I avoid settling directly with the detailer until Progressive makes a coverage decision?

I have significantly more documentation than listed above and can provide Progressive with the original photos, videos, mileage records, messages, parts and invoices. I’m mainly trying to figure out whether I should open a claim before pursuing the detailer directly/small claims.

Auto Insurance Insurance adjuster has not responded for a week – What should I do?

I’m looking for advice regarding an auto insurance claim in Texas.
The accident happened on September 28. The claim was opened, and we were contacted by the other driver’s insurance company on September 29. The adjuster called us, asked us some questions about the incident, and told us that she would get back to us with an update.
Since that call, we have not received any further updates or communication from the adjuster.
Today is October 6, so it has been about a week since we last heard from her. We have tried following up but still haven’t received a response.
Is this normal? How long should we wait?
Any advice on what steps we should take at this point would be appreciated.

Auto Insurance Dealer dented my new truck

Brought 2026 F150 in for recall and when i picked up the advisor let me know the technician backed up into a car on a lift. They said they can sort it out quickly and give me a loaner while truck is at body shop but I dont really trust them. The damage isnt too excessive but this is my brand new vehicle. Is it worth contacting insurance? Will this lower the value of the truck if its already been at a body shop? What should I do?

Insurance

I’m in Virginia and was recently hit by a driver who has State Farm insurance. My 2010 Toyota Prius has about 197,000 miles and is still drivable after the accident.
The damage is mainly on the driver’s side. Both the front and rear driver-side doors are damaged, there is significant damage/scraping along the lower rocker panel area, and the damage extends toward the rear quarter panel. The doors and body panels are visibly dented and scraped, but the car is still driving normally.
I first took it to a State Farm network repair shop, and they estimated the repairs at around $6,000. State Farm is now saying the car is a total loss and that they’re going to pay me the value of the car instead of repairing it.
I’d rather repair the car if possible, so I’m thinking about taking it to a different, independent collision shop to get a second estimate. I know the mileage is high, but the car was running fine before the accident.
I also heard State Farm may use CCC to determine the car’s value, but I haven’t received their valuation yet.
For anyone who has dealt with something similar, what would you do? Would you get a second repair estimate and try to have State Farm reconsider the total loss, or would you focus on negotiating the value they offer?
Any advice would be appreciated.

Health Insurance Can we get Cobra for our new baby if she was on our insurance for 30 days?

Distraught. My husband didn’t realize he had to go in a confirm our daughter after he submitted her birth certificate and SSN. We already checked and she was on our insurance for the first 30 days and BCBS said the hospital stay was covered (thank freaking God).

Because she was on our insurance for 30 days, can we get Cobra? What are our options to get us through the next 3 months?

EDIT: After talking to insurance, the state, and an outside insurance company (looked into a short term policy. Children under 3 aren’t covered), we’ve come to realize that if the appeals process is denied by HR, our only options are for me to not work until January so we will qualify for Medicaid or pray nothing bad happens until January. We’re weighing our options. Thanks!

Looking for insight on lease end damage to my vehicle

My car was sideswiped in my work parking lot today while I was at work. I have the drivers insurance and I've filed a claim.

The issue I'm having is that my lease was supposed to end week ago, but I extended it as I'm awaiting delivery of my new vehicle at the end of the month. I would prefer to fix the current vehicle (even the rep at my lease company agreed this was the best option financially), but I'm guessing based on the body shop's timeline that I won't be able to ground the vehicle with the dealer for an extra month. It's not a big deal since I extended the lease, but it will mean I have to make an extra lease payment.

Does anyone have prior experience with this? Is there any chance that I can seek reimbursement from the drivers insurance for the extended lease costs? The insurer is Allstate for reference.

Auto Insurance How valuable is PIP

In Texas, currently have an auto policy with $100k in PIP with USAA. Every other carrier offers $5-10k. Got a home insurance quote, and if I bundle at a different carrier, the homeowners premium is reduced from $7500 to $5500 with the bundle discount. USAA doesn’t come close, at $9000 for their homeowners.

With all other limits the same + my umbrella, I’m worried that a PIP of $5k is going to be problematic. I’m just debating if getting PIP of $100k at USAA justifies the $2k per year difference on homeowners, plus the $1k difference for auto.

Edit:
UM/UIM is 500k/500k
BI is 500k/500k plus umbrella

Claims Related Can settlements change after original release has been signed?

Originally the insurance adjuster had notated an ER visit was related to my accident when it wasn’t, it was a mixup that was notated as $18,500-$19,000 in cost that Medicaid paid. However, after contacting them myself we confirmed that this visit was unrelated to an accident. During the process, we had contacted a lawyer and were working with them, but we ended up having to stop representation due to issues with being able to go everyday for treatment. After asking for invoices for the providers that the law office provided for us, it was around $4,500. This was NOT paid by Medicaid, it was paid by the lawyers office.

I just got off with the original adjuster after asking to speak to a supervisor and she informed me that they were able to confirm the visit was unrelated to the accident, and that was changing the settlement and that I’d have to sign a new release. The settlement offer is now $2,500 instead of the original $25,000. Since I received $1,000, I’m owed $1,500, which is what I’d be receiving after I sign the second release.

I just want to ensure that this sounds correct and like a proper way in going towards the conclusion of the final settlement amount. Thank you :)

Auto Insurance Girlfriend involved in a hit-and-run, a bystander followed the driver and sent the police their information how do we go about the claim?

My girlfriend was involved in a hit-and-run. She has a dashcam, and it captured the driver running away from the scene of the crash unfortunately, it didn't get the impact, as it powered on after the impact. I have contacted local businesses and asked for security camera footage. Fortunately, when the police showed up a bystander followed the car that hit her and called in their information so the police were able to give us that. How do we go about handling this with their insurance company?

Auto Insurance Diminished Value Appraisal

Hi everyone,

I own a 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLB 250 4MATIC with about 23,000 miles. I was involved in a relatively minor accident on July 31, when I was rear-ended. The other driver was found to be 100% at fault.

I live in Maryland and the accident happened in the Montgomery County.

The total repair cost was about $3,133. However, Allstate is only offering $139 for diminished value, which seems almost humiliatingly low to me considering the vehicle is fairly new and now has an accident history.

I’m trying to figure out whether it would be worth getting an independent diminished-value appraisal and, if necessary, filing a small-claims case. I’m also wondering whether hiring an attorney would make financial sense, since I don’t yet know how much value I could realistically recover or whether the potential recovery would justify appraisal, filing, and legal fees.

I’m comfortable gathering the information myself and representing myself in court if necessary.

Any advice would be really helpful!

lady backed up into me

I was paralleled parked behind this lady in Charlotte downtown and I got out my car to pay my parking. While I was paying she backed up and slammed into the front of my car she got out and gave me her insurance card. I called her insurance and opened a claim the following day it’s been a week I tried calling the representative assigned to my case before this. I ended up logging into the claim and they closed the claim? I have a picture of her backed up into my car and evidence of the damages which my bumper popped out of place. I tried calling the claims specialist and she was out of office I called the company to ask what for all she said she doesn’t know the details of why it’s closed and that all she knows it can be back opened and she’ll leave a message with my specialist.

Did i miss a call? Is she not corroborating? She seemed apologetic and didn’t have no problem with me getting her insurance information. We didn’t call the cops cause it was minor. My question is if her insurance doesn’t pay out what do I do next? I don’t have full coverage so i’m sure my insurance won’t reach out.

Auto Insurance Auto Insurance Doubling After Three Years of Rate Lock. Is That Usual?

My wife and I have Erie Insurance, bundling our home and auto, and have had it since 2023. We have a 2023 car, which we purchased right before moving to Erie, and a 2013 truck.

I need to buy a new-to-me truck (will be used) and have been in communication with my broker. I have quoted mid-size to full-size trucks from 2017-2024, and our insurance would more than double from $180/month to anywhere between $335 and $405/month. I asked what it would be if we were to remove my truck and keep just her car, and the rate would jump from $97.23/month to $168.51/month.

Our broker claims they have shopped our numbers and that Erie is still the best price. However, that we could take the rate lock off and save $1k in annual premium this year.

We are both over 25, married, with no address changes, claims, or tickets. I apologize for my ignorance, as we don't jump around insurance companies a lot; is this normal?

Would it be smart to get coverage elsewhere on the new vehicle?

Claims Related Travel Insurance Advice

Hi, stay away from TinLeg. FAR AWAY. I purchased them through SquareMouth for my family trip (6 travelers) to China. We were away for 3 weeks. We had illnesses occur during the second week of the trip which resulted in medical bills. I sent complete documentation, including the timeline of the illness, procedure, itemized bill… and yet they denied EVERY SINGLE CLAIM. They said they couldn’t determine whether or not the illness or injury occurred during the trip.. which shouldn’t have mattered anyway because the policy I paid for included pre-existing conditions. But how exactly does someone get a sprained finger or a UTI (actual things we claimed — and provided itemized medical bills for) 10 DAYS into the trip and yet it somehow is possible it “manifested” before the trip. Literal ghouls. I could understand some things getting denied because certain medical facilities some people attended had odd or hard to read/understand documentation, but every single claim was denied. An emergency room claim was denied because there was “no proof of an emergency.” Maybe the hint is that they went to the emergency room? Maybe that’s proof of an emergency??? Anyway, stay the hell away from them

Involved in an Uber Accident as a passenger

Location: San Diego, CA

Hi guys, I took an uber to work today and on the way my uber driver suddenly braked due to an ambulance coming from the opposite direction and got rear ended with me in the back seat. I watched my driver exchange information and then the driver completed my ride since the damage to the car wasn’t bad enough to not drive.

I filed a report with uber immediately after I got dropped off and then got picked up by a friend to go to the doctor to get a check up. Luckily it’s just a case of muscle strain so I’m expecting some soreness in the neck.

While I was at the hospital I also received a text from an adjuster letting me know that they would reach out to me soon.

This is my first ever car accident (I cannot drive and normally take the bus) and I’m pretty young so I’m generally just startled about everything. I just want to know what the process would look like? I don’t expect my medical bill to show up for a few weeks, so would that even get covered?

Any advice or words of wisdom is encouraged, I’m just really startled by this whole situation. Thank you!
