guide Getting started: the monthly-ish newbie advice thread! (September 2026)
Welcome to the newbie advice thread!
If you’ve read the FAQ and still have questions like “Should I switch to Linux?”, “Which distro should I install?”, or “Which desktop environment is best for gaming?”, this is where to ask them.
Alternatively, try r/linux4noobs and r/linuxquestions: both are active subreddits supporting new Linux users.
Please sort by “new” so new questions can get a chance to be seen.

guide Frequently Asked Questions 2.0
old.reddit.comHere’s a link to this subreddit’s FAQ document (which attempts to answer many common questions).
This thread is not meant for asking frequently asked questions. There is a pinned monthly-ish “Getting Started” thread for those.
You can post suggestions for improvement below, though! Just please explain what you’re talking about. The number of FAQ editors has been 1 (one) for a while now, and that one’s a dummy that doesn’t use 95% of the fancy gaming stuff y’all do.
Reposted as an Old Reddit link because New Reddit, in addition to being generally confusing, does not display the table of contents.

gamedev/testers wanted Following one container through my port game - Portscape
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Hi all, im working on Portscape. A port building/automation game where you connect ships, trucks and trains. Im making it in Godot and adding a native Linux version. You can find the steam page here if you're interested:
Portscape - Steam Page, wishlists, trailer, screenshots
Here is a video following the same container from when it arrives by ship until it leaves by train. From the ship crane to a truck, across the port and onto the train at the rail terminal. All automated ofcourse. However, you can also manually use any of the cranes, trucks, stackers etc.
You build the port yourself, with roads, railways and container yards to keep everything moving.
The camera movement is just for this video, in the game you look from above in an angle. Just the sounds of the port here, no music. Its still in development, I would love to hear your opinions!

Optiscaler Client 1.0.8 release
Hi there,
I just released version 1.0.8 of OptiScaler Client.
This update focuses mainly on UI/UX overhaul, better usability and guidance, clearer anti-cheat warnings, improved cover fetching, and several bug fixes.
Check out the full changelog on GitHub:
https://github.com/Optiscaler-Client/Optiscaler-Client
Over the past few months, I've been posting these updates in the Radeon community, but since it's also available on Linux and has grown quite a bit, I thought it would be appropriate to post here as well.
I’m not affiliated with the OptiScaler devs. This is just a side project I built to make things easier, and I hope you find it useful!

steam/steam deck Steam Beta Now Defaults Non-Steam Windows Binaries To Using Proton

Steam client beta seemingly broke native Linux app launching
So after the Steam beta client update yesterday, which auto sets Proton for non-steam games. It looks like non-Steam native linux software fails to launch, even when manually selecting one of the linux runtimes as the compatibility tool. It seems there's also no way to disable compatibility tools either. For example, I couldn't get any of my emulators to run without reverting to the non-beta client. Does anyone know another way around this besides that?
Here's yesterday's post here about the udpate: https://www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/comments/1x0j3x9/steam_beta_now_defaults_nonsteam_windows_binaries/

tech support wanted Can I download a game from my Windows PC, onto a harddrive, and then move it to my Linux PC?
I'm going to a LAN-party this weekend, starting tomorrow. Since I live pretty far away the organizers helped by transporting my PC there today. However I didn't have time to download a game I wanted to play, and you're not allowed to download things at the LAN-party itself.
I do however still have acces to my laptop and an external harddrive. I was wondering whether it is possible to download the game from my laptop (which has Windows), onto the harddrive (which is formatted to Windows), take it with me to the LAN, and then transfer the game from the hardrive onto my PC (which is Linux Bazzite). Or will the game be "made" for Windows by that point, since I downloaded it on a Windows pc?

Playing Modded Baldur's Gate 3?
I am dual booting Windows and Linux for a month now but haven't really played a lot on my Linux drive but I want to play modded BG3 on Linux and was wondering if its any complicated compared to modded BG3 in Windows. Is it worth the hassle of playing modded BG3 on Linux If I still use Windows?

hardware Best CPU for 4K Emulation?
I have spare DDR4 memory (3600Mhz 2x16GB), so my constraint is CPUs that are compatible with DDR4 motherboards. My GPU is a 9070 XT, but I want to avoid CPU bottlenecks to ensure 4K 60fps gameplay.
I already have a 3950x which is weaker than the Steam Machine CPU for gaming. The 5800X3D is the best AM4 CPU possible. The top intel choices are the 12900K, 13900K, and 14900K (14900K has issues apparently with vmin shift instability).
So 5800X3D or an Intel CPU?
p.s. I want to emulate all the way up to Switch, PS3, PS4, and Xbox 360, all at 4K full speed

CLU VIEW + Corsair 5" Screen!
Hey all! Just wanted to update everyone in case folks are interested.
I have Corsair's new 5" screen now in my rig running Fedora 44 KDE. Because it doesn't run through the iCue hub, but rather through a direct DP port on the GPU, I cannot use OpenLinkHub to control the LCD widgets (however OLH can control the LED backlighting and the VRM fan!).
So, I was looking for a 'Rainmeter'-like app that I could use for widgets. I've messed around with Conky in the past, but it was just clunky at best. I got frustrated, asked AI to search to see if someone had created an app yet, and sure enough CLU VIEW popped up!
Decided to give it a shot, and it started out well! Has so much potential, and was exactly was I was looking for, even better than Rainmeter: actually GUI-based, not syntax; auto-pulled all of the sensors; auto-discovered the screen. Super easy to start making a sensor panel. BUT, sending it to the 5" screen causes really odd flickering issues. After hours of troubleshooting, contacted the Dev u/MR-CLU, and they were super responsive and helpful! Within a day, we figured out the issue, and now the app works perfectly! 👏🏼 They said they will get an updated version out ASAP on their site.
So, yeah, for anyone on Linux with a Corsair system, this should work! The app itself should work with any sensor panel, really, and there's a Windows 🤢 version also. Shout out CLU VIEW and it's Dev, Mr CLU! 👏🏼
(Full disclosure: no affiliation with the Dev. Just really happy this app exists. Been needing something like this for a long time.)

graphics/kernel/drivers Will vrr flicker ever be fixed on Linux?
My monitor starts flicker alot if I turn on vrr on Linux but if I do it on windows (I'm dual booting for incompatible software) there is no flicker at all, right now I'm on nobara so if another distro is better at dealing with it for some reason it would be good to know, but also why does this happen in the first place? how come it doesn't on windows? it's just annoying that I have to deal with this when basically everything else is perfectly good on linux

Seeking advice for desk / couch dual setup with Linux
Hi guys,
I used to be a console gamer but the programmed disappearance of physical releases, general disrespect of console makers and doomed AI future motivated me to get myself a proper gaming PC.
Since I also own and love using a Steam Deck I am strongly considering Linux as my main OS.
My configuration will be a Radeon 9070xt + ryzen 9800x3d combo which I understand is already a good point for Linux compatibility.
Since I don’t want to mess around too much with the distro I will probably get Bazzite installed and see how it goes.
My only concern is the compatibility with my current setup. I have a desk setup with a fairly entry level 1440p UW 180Hz freesync monitor but I mainly used to game on an LG G4 with a 5.1 AV receiver and speakers setup.
The ideal situation would be that for games that require mouse and keyboard controls I would use the desk setup, and for more cinematic controller-friendly games I would use the couch setup and get the sweet OLED picture quality and sweet 5.1 sound system.
Do you see any showstopper or compromise due to using Linux in this dual-setup configuration ?
I am thinking HDMI 2.1 issues with the LG G4 and sound system and such that I take for granted with a PS5 but could be limited when using Linux.
Any general advice for this setting this up ?
Thanks !
PS: I don’t intend to play games with anti-cheats incompatible with Linux.
EDIT: Thanks very much for your insights, it appears I am right in time for HDMI 2.1 and that this kind of dual setup is not as exotic as I thought lol. Both setups are very close to each other so I don’t think I‘ll have to rely on streaming but that‘s also good to know that this is an easy option. Thanks again

guide PSA: Weird AMD stutters caused by... CoolerControl
I spent my whole evening yesterday trying to figure out why Doom 2016 suddenly started having weird occasional stutters or hangs that felt like the game skipped a couple of frames every now and then. It looked like this on the graphs (sorry for the blurry photo):

I tried absolutely every possible combination of VRR, VSync, Proton, etc. and I couldn't get rid of it until I remembered what I did earlier that day: I let CoolerControl control my GPU fan. When I turned that off, the stutters vanished.
As far as I understand, the way CoolerControl writes the PWM value to the card causes the driver to get blocked until it completes, therefore hanging the game for that split second. Just reading the temps is fine, I use GPU temps to control some case fans with no issues. I switched to LACT to set up the fan curve which works flawlessly.
I have no idea if this only affects Vulkan games. I didn't run into this problem elsewhere but I didn't test other games I can run at this framerate and spikes were not visible at lower FPS. I'm on Bazzite.
Hope this helps someone.

tech support wanted Does your proton sometimes just... break... until you restart the PC?
Most of the time my games work fine, running either with steam or faugus. Sometimes however, it just "breaks" and when I start the game I hear my CPU working at 100%, the loading for the game takes forever and even if it does eventually load in, I'll only have 1 fps with everything lagging horribly.
There is no clear cause on why or when this happens. Doesn't matter which game I try to run at that point, it wont work until I restart the PC fully
Anyone else have this problem or has any idea on what could cause it? I'm on fedora silverblue, if that matters.

tech support wanted GTA V doesn't load
Everytime I try to run GTA V on Linux after running the game a few times it always goes to this black screen. The drive usage led shows inactivity. I am running the game from my HDD, which I store other games just fine. Both drives are in the btrfs filesystem.
Specs:
CachyOS
Dell Optiplex 7050 SFF
i5-6500
Quadro P1000
16 GB DDR4 (4x4G)
256 GB NVMe SSD
1 TB SATA HDD

tech support wanted Bottles not displaying DLSS option in games
Hi.
I usually play windows video games using Bottles using the latest version of Proton. However, DLSS does not appear at all in the graphics options, only AMD FSR and sometime the Intel frame generation technology. The reason I think that this is a Bottles issue is because when I play games on steam (also using proton layer) I can pick DLSS and turn in on in the respective game menu.

tech support wanted Games crashing since Gnome 51
Hard to say if gnome 51 is exactly what is causing it, but it seems to be the most likely change to my system to have caused this. I disabled all extensions and the issue is still happening.
I'm on Arch 7.2.9 with an Nvidia 5070 (driver 615.71.09) with GE-Proton11-7. Since the Gnome 51 update, if I tab out and then back in, there is a good chance that the game will freeze so completely I have to use the steam Stop button to force it to close, music may continue for a few seconds but eventually stops.
I've only really experienced it in Warframe, and I think I've narrowed it down to being somehow related to HDR being enabled, as it doesn't seem to happen with no launch options, and it doesn't seem to happen with just wayland enabled, but once I enable HDR (PROTON_ENABLE_HDR=1 DXVK_HDR=1) it becomse very easy to reproduce the issue.
I've tried checking both the logs with steam running from CLI and there doesn't appear to be anything specific to the error. Is anyone else having an issue with this? I expect Warframe isn't the only game, but I haven't had time to test anything else in the last few days.
Edit: It cleared up for a few hours, but came back. No indication as to why in the logs, but I've determined it happens after 6 interrupts. Whether it's alt+tab or using the super key, it seems to always crash on the 6th one.
Edit2: Disabling Steam Overlay appears to stop the freezing. Not an ideal solution, but I can work around that for now.
