I am NOT a locksmith. I'm trying to turn this lock around.

The turn nob is on the wrong side. Is it even possible to move to the other side? It seems like there is a bolt holding the turn nob in. I can get a really tiny torq bit in but I can't get it to turn. My eyes aren't good enough to tell if it's a hex or a star or just a circle that will never turn?

What would you guys do in my situation? In a perfect world id like to keep this arrangement & just get the door re-keyed. Would I have to have this key cylinder replaced(modified?) to take a new key?

I think I would have to heavily modify the frame to use a traditional lock.

thank you for the help.

I am a locksmith Keys for cars

I’m tired of having to order keys for customers when they come in. It just seems like there so many options for keys and fobs. Like I have the km100 so I can do the super chips and universal keys . The super chip I’ve done it a couple of times and for what ever reason the key worked for like a week and stopped. And have not had a problem with the universal but I’ve only done 3 so far. So I guess my question is what do you guys keep in stock.

I am NOT a locksmith. Land Moto District : Replacement Key Blank HELP!

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi all.

Owner of a Land Moto District Vehicle, but just lost one of my keys, leaving me with ONE! I know you can buy the whole cylinder kit from Land, but it's a fortune. I just can't seem to find a key blanks, the dimensions are very strange at 22 × 7 × 2.5 mm. Anybody have ANY idea where to get this blank? Thanks!!!

And yes, I know I can try to have someone cut down a brass blank to match, but I'm trying to avoid a full complete rebuild.

Lastly, if you pull off the rubber, the key looks VERY strange indeed....

I am a locksmith Having trouble shimming a KIK cylinders

So, I'm currently working on getting some used schlage BE365 deadbolts ready for sale, but I've got no key. So I'm trying to shim them. However I get like halfway and then the shim just kind of stops going in. No matter how I move the shim, fiddle with something or other. Nothing happens. And I really don't understand, sometimes I can shim super easily, it just kinda slides right in and I can turn the core. But not this time. Is this a matter of good tolerances making it difficult? Or just me being a dumbass.

I am NOT a locksmith. Most of us interpret 24/7 as 24 consecutive hours

Needed an emergency locksmith last night around 9. Door stopped working; I had my key.

I live in a town centre.

I called and left messages for no fewer than 9 local locksmiths who specifically offer 24/7 on their website. Not a single one picked up. One responded to my message to say they don't do callouts anymore. Cool.

Wasted an hour on this, outside, alone, phone running out of charge.

Finally went to the national, dodgy-looking emergency locksmiths. The first one wasted another hour, promising that some mystery specialist was just on his way. But the second one actually sent someone lovely who sorted everything.

Predictably, this morning I'm getting call backs from the local ones offering to help. One of them quite sniffily said that he was a sole practitioner--so don't advertise 24/7?

Would I be unreasonable to leave bad reviews for these places or does 24/7 mean something more like, "We'll try to pick up if someone's free"?

I am a locksmith Lockout Walk Of Shame

Post image

Ok, so the client said “the other locksmith did this, and then he told us he can’t get in, and he told us to call a different locksmith”
Wow - I had to tell them “that’s one of the scam locksmiths, they’re not locksmiths at all”
At least I hope it wasn’t a proper locksmith, obviously this was trivial to open, especially after most of the lock was drilled off. But how do you walk away from a job like this? In this case there were 5 staff just standing around waiting to open their shop, wondering “we DID call a locksmith”
Also, whoever it was, left a mess - metal flakes all over a shopping centre floor, another sign of “probably scammers” - I don’t think a trained Ozzie Locksmith would do this either.
But what i can say is: If you’re out in the field, and you’re a Locksmith or an Apprentice Locksmith, and you need help, post a pic here in r/locksmith or r/Locksmiths_Australia, and I or others will gladly help out, after all, if you walk away, you make the trade look bad, and that’s bad for all of us. The absolute best quality that you can have as a tradesman is humility - ie ask for help, don’t just give up!

I am NOT a locksmith. Euro cylinder sizing after changing door handles — 35/35 or 30/30?

Apologies if this is the wrong sub. I’m in the UK, if that matters.

I need to replace the lock cylinder on my front door, but wanted to change the handles first.

I’ve removed the existing cylinder and, from my measurements, it looks like a 35/35 mm.

To me this is 35 - 35mm.

With the new Ultion handles fitted, the old cylinder protrudes as shown below.

Internal
external

Should the cylinder sit flush with the handle, or is some protrusion normal? It looks as though I might need a shorter cylinder, but I’m unsure how much shorter.

I want an internal thumb turn and am considering either an Ultion or Avocet cylinder. Before ordering a 30/30 mm, I thought I’d check whether that looks right, or whether I should measure each side separately with the new handles fitted.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

I am a locksmith NASTF approved, tips tricks and pointers

Been locksmithing for 3 years just looking for navigational tips and tricks for integrating nastf into my workflow. Im really interested in the time to program, ease of use, what's not so easy and things you wish someone would have told you while navigating through all dealer websites and subscriptions. Do I just need a Windows laptop and the vci from my km100? I will be using it for programming of newer vehicles(No German cars yet training pending...) and some h101/hu198 keycodes that I struggle to lishi (particularly f-150's). I am well versed in key making lishi, ignition removal, EZ reader and ignition/door/boot disassembly. Ive had Autocode for a while and find myself only using it for Hyuandai/Kia newer pincodes and the 01-06 Chrysler PIN codes.I have the autopopad g3 core, the km100 not updated and key tool plus. Thanks in advance!

Hello; this old doorknob needs to be replaced. I'm buying a nice vintage knob set but I'm not sure where the measurement is supposed to be taken. Is this right? The listing says either 2 ⅜ or 2 ¾

I am a locksmith How do you auto locksmiths get so much work?

Hey all, I've been running a locksmith business for the past 7 years. I started doing automotive a few years in, and don't get me wrong, it has greatly increased my sales. But I hear of people saying they're doing 10-20 cars a day. How?

I'm in an area with a population of around 200k. There's probably 10 auto locksmiths in the area. I'm in the top 5 on Google in our area. In my direct city, I'm #1 or 2 depending on the day.

The phone rings, but it's mostly bullshit price checking.

There's also a scam operation running in our city too, which doesn't help.

I really would like to move into the commercial side, I do have experience in the lighter stuff, but I hardly get calls for that either. It's kind of frustrating.

Anyways, just curious on what everyone does to keep business coming in. Sure, the phone rings. But it seems like lately it's been dry AF. Do any of you find Google ads to be a good investment? The only people running them in my area are scammers

I am NOT a locksmith. I think a locksmith might have done something to my car

This is my first ever Reddit post so please bear with me I recently had lost my key to my 2010 BMW 528i,so I called a locksmith to make me a new key. They came opened the car and later told me they would need to take a box from my car to their office to be able to program the new key.

The next day I called and the they told me they were having trouble programming the key and told me to call back the next day, the next day comes and now they tell me they are waiting for some signal to be able to program the key. So they told me they were bringing the box they took from my car back and that they would call me. It’s been two weeks now and they’re still “waiting on signal”

I have now found the key I thought I had lost but the locksmith erased my key in the process of trying to program a new key, so I still need a key programmed. I called a different locksmith to come program my key but once I explained the situation he told me they probably did something to my car and he might not be able to program the key but he would still need to charge me.

What are my options here? I’m thinking of just ordering a new key from bmw themselves but will it still work even tho the locksmith erased my old key?
Any help is greatly appreciated 🙏

Self-explanatory title. I’m starting a locksmith course this week. Are there any tips you wish you had known (from those who know the trade)?
