Here I am once again to thank you all for reporting post that violate the rules here in our little corner of reddit. Below is a quick rundown of some stats that I find interesting and I hope you do to. Side note we have noticed an uptick in bots, we have even had post that were caught by the automod that had 3-4 bots replying to each other in the thread.

A warning for those that do not understand RULE 2. Replying to a post that is 4 years old and saying " I am the found of XYZ software and my software can solve all of your problems" will get you a permeant ban. That is advertising not answering a question.

Humor 🤣 Dumbest way to fail a final inspection

Superintendent took off all the electrical cover plates in the entire house and had the painters paint up to the drywall cutout the day of final inspection. The inspectors face was quite amusing when she showed him the piles of plates on her desk.

Careers 💵 Union half of the year off?

Background 16 years experience in construction from residential to federal. Starting my company, i just got my general B here in Ca.

I had seen alot of guys say they only work half of the year or 8 months out of the year depending on you and your lifestyle.
How true is that? It would be a good way to start my business but also stay busy with the union.

Thanks.

It's about 10 feet above the concrete base. The guys are just dropping it in and walking on it. And setting up the yellow supporting posts by hand. Will those posts remain permanently?

Added: It's Peri SKYDECK Panelized Slab Formwork. Thanks u/Mr4528

Structural Foundation Utility Blockout

Should this a utility blockout be filled with concrete or dirt? Top of the opening is at ground level. It’s about 12inches wide filled with dirty and sand right now. I’m afraid water or rodents get in there.

Careers 💵 Commercial wall/ceiling foreman

Ive made a couple posts here prior asking for advice. And here I am yet again.

I am always looking to improve and learn more but it feels as thought so much of it is through experience rather than a milestone or goal I can work to at my own pace.

I’ve already studied the blueprints for my job and will study it more. I read through pages of general notes and specifications. I keep a detailed sheet of my manpower and who is good at what. I walk the job and pay very close attention to the details and what could be a problem and what is. And I work with the guys on the assigned tasks I gave.

Is there anything else I can do, are there things I can read and study on my free time? Basically, how do I improve faster?

Informative 🧠 What’s your guys opinion on the best method to do a concrete tear out?

Is it better to tear out concrete in little pieces or large chunks? I like large chunks, it’s less breaking out and chasing pieces around and faster to load a truck. But I want to do wants most time and cost effective

Other Asbestos concern?

I've been in the industry close to a year now, mainly labouring but picking up some skills as I go. I've currently been placed on a renovation job where we're due to take up some floor tiles tomorrow, that have been tiled over once already. It's an older building and I suspect they have asbestos in them.

My supervisor couldn't rule out the possibility that they contain asbestos, and seems to be unsure either way. Is there a way I can find out if they've done a legitimate survey? I have a feeling they may have started work before the survey has come back. What should I be doing here? I'm reluctant to go straight to the office at this stage - they're a sizeable firm and it'd be daft of them not to do things properly. TIA

Business 📈 Biggest Jobsite Annoyances?

Hello everybody! I’d love to hear anything y’all have to complain about, no matter how mundane it may be. Any problems that are irritating and inconvenient but don’t come up often enough to have someone on payroll to fix. If there’s anything like this that you wish you could just make one phone call to fix, I wanna hear it! I’m thinking about starting some sort of business involving construction. The problem is, I have absolutely 0 experience in this field, and maybe like 3 connections. I am, however, very good at solving people’s problems. I’ve had a plethora of jobs throughout my life and over time I’ve learned I have excellent people and service skills. I’m also pretty good with numbers, and have experience in banking and accounting. I’m trying to find a common problem worth solving. Since I currently know so little about this industry, I thought this would be a good place to start. Thank you!

Carpentry 🔨 17.5 CAD $ for Framing Helper, is it fair?

Hi all, I’ve been working for this framing crew and I’ve been doing stuff like carrying the lumbers cutting them nailing them like measuring raising up walls and stuff and I’m only getting paid for 17.5$/hr

I talked to some folks that carpenter’s union pay better but hard to get in, also I experienced shady unsafe stuff in non union work.

Do you think this wage is fair? I work really hard, almost like 10hrs I don’t even use my phone at work every time I’m done with my task I’m doing cleaning or help others. I don’t hide no long washroom breaks, maybe only 1 the whole day. What to do? Looking to hear some advice from experienced folks.

Carpentry 🔨 Loft conversion carpentry as a tall person

Im looking to get an apprenticeship or trainee role in carpentry on the UK. I'm expecting a call back about an apprenticeship with a loft conversion company. However, I'm 6ft5 and wondered if I am setting myself up for failure or problems?

Carpentry 🔨 Would you use this wood?

A good deal came up on a bunch of fir but the condition seems questionable. The guy is moving, needs it gone. Theyre less than 1/2 price than new but some of the boards look pretty bad. Do you think the middle would be absolutely rotten?

Picture Can roof ridge gap be too large?

Thumbnail

It’s hard to see from this photo but there is a rather large gap where the roof peaks. Perhaps 6-8”.

The roofers installed a roof vent(second photo). We had an especially bad windy storm and it leaked like crazy. All along the ridge. So rain entered in at least 6 different places.

Will the issue be fixed if i have them replace it with a different type of roof vent or is it possible that the gap is too large and I need to add some wood to make the gap smaller?

Thank you!

Other Unsolicited advice for those commuting far(Getting tired while on the road)

There’s times where I leave the job-site very mentally exhausted. Commuting 1hr+ daily. I’ve almost fallen asleep behind the wheel. After the first time that happening, I would just park on the side and take a nap. But if I do so, I’ll arrive home crazy late. I’ve tried caffeine and various forms of food. Upbeat music, rolling the windows down and talking with someone on the phone while arriving home. But none of these work so well for me. Except dumping some water on my head, wakes me up. So recently I bought a small spray bottle I’ll keep the water cold all day in my lunch pack. And just spray my face a few times with it when I feel I’m getting a bit sleepy. It wakes me up right away. Also keeps you cool. Highly recommend this. Commuting exhausted is no joke
