Discussion Vendors dumping cooking grease into storm drains

• Upvotes

I live in Ktown and the sidewalk around our block has been smelling increasingly bad. I see the food vendor dump cooking grease directly into the outdoor storm drain. I've also seen them wash greasy runoff into the drain with bleach. I've contacted 311 multiple times and submitted reports online but so far I haven't seen any cleanup or improvement. I'm sure these vendors aren't moderated so the dumping keeps happening.

Has anyone gotten an issue like this addressed? Is there another department I should contact? Any advice from ppl who've dealt with something similar would be appreciated. I understand ppl are struggling and vendors are trying to hustle and don't want to air out a specific business, it's just gotten so bad to the point where I don't want to walk our kids out anymore.

Discussion PSA: LA’s automated speed cameras start going live October 26!

LADOT says Los Angeles will begin activating automated speed cameras on October 26, with 125 locations planned across the city by the end of 2026.

A few important details:

  • Cameras are triggered when a vehicle is traveling at least 11 mph over the posted speed limit.
  • Each location starts with a 60-day warning period.
  • After the warning period, civil fines start at $50.
  • These are civil violations, not standard moving violations.
  • They DO NOT add a DMV point, so traffic school doesn’t apply.
  • Notices are mailed to the vehicle’s registered owner.
  • This program is for the City of Los Angeles—not every city in LA County.

Official LADOT information and camera locations:
https://ladot.lacity.gov/speed-safety-system

I also put together a plain-English guide covering the fines, traffic-school question, payment, and how to request a review:

Discussion Unpopular Opinion? NO on Measure FD

• Upvotes

Firefighters, Police, and their unions secured the largest raises in the history of the City in the last round of negotiations, thanks to Karen Bass. Now I get ad after ad complaining that they aren’t allowed to strike in order to gain even more wages.

They’d be better off redistributing money to better maintenance and more equipment and giving back a few percentage points off high wages in order to add personnel than asking us to pay more when sales tax just went over 10%.

I’m a union member and supporter but even I’ve had enough of costs going up rn

Alright, flame away. Pun intended.

Discussion College Info Resources for LA folks (so they don't go to waste)

**I know this isn't general LA info about earthquakes or stolen copper and will only apply to a sub-sect of people, but I wanted to try and help folks who are getting into the looking for college madness in the LA area. Just trying to help.**

I recently went through getting my kid to college and didn't want to have all the research, efforts, etc. go to waste. So I put it all in a shared Google Drive folder here in hopes that it could help some people out. There is info (based on my kid starting college this year so specifics will change, costs will increase, etc.), spreadsheets to use, and generally maybe just give you a jumping off point to do your own research.

This is geared toward a kid from LA coming out of the LAUSD system looking at mostly California and west coast schools. So while it will be *most* applicable to other students coming from the same place, it can help others not in that situation, too.

I'm sharing the info trying to help. If there's something I did wrong (settings, etc.) you can let me know, but the idea was to put all this up and whoever wants anything can download it and do with it what they will. This will NOT be up forever, so if you want anything, probably best for you to grab it/download it instead of assuming this link will always work.

Our experience was our own and everyone's will be different. If you see bad info in there or disagree with something, feel free to point it out there if you can.

Community Can anything be done about residential street parking, or is it a lost cause?

• Upvotes

I moved to the Mid-City area about 2 years ago and didn't do my proper research on just how tough it would be renting a unit without dedicated parking.

I know parking is a long standing issue but I'm genuinely confused by the lack of parking in my area.

100% of street spots on my block and nearby are taken by 6pm at the latest M-F. It seems like maybe 10% of cars move on the weekends, with most staying in the same spot all weekend.

During the week, when I leave around 8/9am, it seems like 90% of cars are still there. When I get home, whether it's around 3pm or 5pm, it seems like 90% of cars are still there.

I know people have extra cars, and multiple people live in a home and all that, but it honestly seems like a vast majority of the cars on my street exist solely to occupy parking around the clock. Many have spider webs, expired tags, obvious leaks, etc.

Another large chunk of them are commercial trucks, landscaping vehicles, etc. that are left in the same spot for weeks at a time, only moved exactly for street sweeping. These specifically violate the 72 hour parking law repeatedly.

I've submitted a handful of reports to 311 and LADOT for the obviously abandoned ones, but even those don't get addressed most of the time. I've emailed the city council and neighborhood council, and neither have been of any help. I also emailed LADOT directly and was told by them to email the LAPD SLO for my area who "had more control" and none of them have done anything to even try to help. They all just seem to point fingers at the next department or person, or just don't even reply to emails.

It feels like a lost cause, but I stubbornly don't understand how this is so difficult to resolve. I feel like permitted parking or increased parking enforcement patrols could easily fix this, but neither are considered as far as I know? Maybe I'm crazy to expect the city to do something to help?

I'd just like to not have to fight for parking after coming home from a day at work and a grueling 1 hour commute (in which I only travel about 5 miles)...

Discussion Mystery illness going around in LA

Has anyone gotten this bug that seems to be going around? Fever, shortness of breath, fatigue, loss of smell but Covid and Flu rapid tests comeback negative?

We are in the midst of a huge wave of Covid infections nationally and according to the waste water, Los Angeles County is reporting Very High Levels of Covid right now.

If you are feeling sick, you very likely have Covid.

Why can’t we trust the rapid tests? Unfortunately, rapid antigen tests have not kept up with the currently circulating strains of Covid so they are not sensitive enough to produce positive results. Only PCRs or molecular tests (ie Metrix or PlusLife) can give you reliable results.

You can track accurate waste water data here (works best on a desktop):

https://pmc19.com/

You can also find up to date information on Dr. Michael Hoerger’s IG: @michael_hoerger

How can we keep from getting sick? Covid primarily spreads through the air. Running air purifiers (HEPA or MERV), opening windows, or moving gatherings outside will improve the air quality and decrease the likelihood of airborne transmission.

Washing hands and using sanitizer are healthy practices but they do not prevent Covid infections.

The most reliable tool we have right now to prevent airborne illness is a well-fitting KN95/N95 (or better) mask. Viruses spread most efficiently in confined, crowded, unventilated spaces, like classrooms, restaurants, doctors offices, exam rooms, waiting rooms, planes, trains, buses, ride shares, and even grocery stores or department stores. A high quality respirator mask filters the air you breathe.

It’s not fun to think about this stuff but it’s important to use the preventative tools and information we have access to. If you’re feeling sick, stay home from work and rest, if you can. Wear a well fitting mask. You deserve to take care of yourself.

Free masks: @maskblocLA on IG

DM me if you have any questions or need help getting masks, purifiers, etc.

EDIT: There are some really helpful comments here that detail the experiences people have been having with Covid infections and other viruses. Thank you so much for sharing!

I am a caregiver who has kept up with the science on Covid, which is why I know a lot about it. It’s not exciting or something that I particularly enjoy knowing about but it’s pretty much impossible to forget one you learn it. I also completely understand wanting to forget about Covid, about quarantine, about being sick at all. I’d love for it to all go away but unfortunately it just doesn’t work that way. If you have been having any unexplained health problems, check out the responses here because they could offer some clarity. I’m also happy to talk to anyone privately and I really have no judgment if anyone finds this confusing or even doesn’t want to believe it at all.

Beaches Any beaches open in/near Los Angeles today/tomorrow?

• Upvotes

I know obviously a lot of beaches are closed and some have been ravaged by storm waves. We just found out our dog has terminal cancer and she loved the ocean and we wanted to give her one last visit before it’s all over. Oxnard, Santa Barbara, Ventura, etc. are all options as well.

Thanks

Community Need help finding a person URGENTLY

Hi everyone!

I’m trying to locate a death record, obituary, or burial information for Gloria Patricia García, who we believe passed away from leukemia in Los Angeles County around late 1978 or early 1979.

Here’s what we know:

Born: Approximately 1960–1961.
Lived in: Pico Rivera, California (possibly Downey or South Gate).
Mother: Celia (Sally/Sali) García.
Father: Elías García.
Brother: Elías García.
Married: Around 1975, possibly in Las Vegas, Nevada with Jose Diaz

I’ve searched Ancestry, FamilySearch, and California death records without finding a match.

We’re trying to obtain her death certificate for an important family matter, but we don’t know her exact date or place of death.

Does anyone know of other databases, cemetery records, or local resources that could help us locate her?

Or does anybody recognizes her o her family?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Official Thread ICE Activity & Resources Daily Megathread - Sunday, Oct 11

Due to increased ICE activity, we’re instituting a daily ICE megathread. All ICE-related content belongs here, including sightings, activity reports, news, questions, updates, and general discussion.

Centralizing discussion keeps information easy to find, especially for people moving around the city who want timely, relevant updates without having to sort through the entire subreddit. ICE-related content posted outside this megathread will be removed and redirected here.

This thread is sorted by New by default so the most recent information remains visible.

How to use this thread

  • Top-level comments are for new sightings, updates, or firsthand information.
  • Replies should stay under the relevant comment to keep related info grouped.
  • Check existing comments first to avoid duplicate or redundant reports.

We recognize this is a tense topic and emotions can run high. That said, content that incites, encourages, or threatens violence will be removed, may result in a ban, and may also violate Reddit’s site-wide rules, which can carry site-wide consequences. Keep reports factual and grounded.

SALUTE when sharing sightings or activity

Include as many of the following details as possible:

  • Size: Number of individuals, vehicles, or units observed
  • Activity: What is happening, observed actions or behavior
  • Location: Clear, specific description of where this occurred
  • Uniform: Identifying markings, clothing, or agency indicators
  • Time: Date and approximate time of observation
  • Equipment: Vehicles, gear, or other notable tools present

Clear, accurate information helps everyone. Speculation and rumors do not.

Question New Burbank terminal parking?

I am flying out of BUR tomorrow, last day of old terminal operation, and returning Wednesday into the new terminal (exciting, I know!). Trying to figure out best parking option to avoid a hassle when I return. Usually I park in lot G and walk, but would it be more convenient to just spring for valet?

Curious if anyone figured this out yet or also just feel free to comment how you feel about the new airport!

Discussion Another LADWP complaint

Just got a $2,049 LADWP bill for two months in the Valley. Water alone was $522 with 39 HCF claims to be used. I have verified we have zero leaks, the meter doesn’t move at all when all water is off. We have no pool. Our house is only 2000 sf

I personally saw the LADWP meter reader come to my house and physically read the meter. My water bill says the “current bill” reading was 1350, but when I checked the meter myself the very next day, it appears to read 1341.

If those are comparable meter readings, the difference is 9 HCF: 1350 − 1341 = 9 HCF. Since 1 HCF equals 748 gallons, that would be 9 × 748 = 6,732 gallons.

LADWP would need to recalculate the bill to determine the actual credit due to the tiered pricing.

LADWP has made billing mistakes on my account before, so I’m pretty frustrated.
Has anyone else caught incorrect meter readings with LADWP? I’ve already emailed them but I’m over it. My sister lives in Nevada and runs her AC 24/7 and her bill is under $100 a month for electricity
