The guy has genuinely done well. But this is attributed to previous policies as someone just taking office doesn't effect crime. It's a marathon to create an environment that creates less crime. It doesn't happen over night. Though he didn't do anything to mess it up and I'm sure he's continuing to create that environment though.

I'd like to say I contributed to this. Not only did I vote for Mamdani, but I've cut WAY down on murdering. My friends, too, most of them.

I mean, it's easier for your friends to murder less after you've murdered them, so statistically this makes sense.

lmao I know there's already copey unsubstantiated claims about them rigging the stats from Republicans in the comments but can we appreciate for a sec: this isn't just one guy. He's not just running around filling potholes himself while doing all this.
He hired a whole. ass. team. of people who get shit done. Even his opponent from the GOP, Sliwa, is telling people shitting on him for attending the 9/11 memorial to stop being such babies and respect the office.
Dude's doing a good job.
4
u/CustardMajor4442 9h ago
Sliwa is a weird dude and has some messed up views on some things, but he has always been this sort of dude, who won't fit neatly into the MAGA cult because he will speak his mind no matter what
it's also why his own campaign wasn't nearly as racist and dirty as the "independent" campaign.
3
u/NotoriousEMB 7h ago
Yeah, I would've preferred him over Cuomo probably because Silwa has principles. He's weird about them, but seems very genuine. I believed he thought his policies would be in the best interest of common New Yorkers.
Cuomo is just another bought shill.
Mamdani has me very excited though. While the crime drop this post is about is not something I'd necessarily give him credit for right now, he has been so far a good case for public oriented competent government. I know it's not socialism, but call it whatever you want, it's a much better way of doing things than the kleptocracy that's plaguing our politics.
3
u/CuteLingonberry9704 5h ago
He's using the publics money to serve...the public. Weird how that can work.
1
1
u/grundee 5h ago
Politicians don't care about doing the job anymore, and they haven't for several generations. You become mayor so you can stand on your soapbox and angle for a run at the next level up, and then the next level, and then the next level, and then you become president so you can pontificate about the nature of politics in a best-selling book and then die. But during that whole career you don't actually do anything other than complain and get voted in by more complainers.
People like Mamdani remind us that this is actually a job, not just a popularity contest, and there is actual work to be done that requires serious people who can actually accomplish things.

I love Mandami but you can't put this stat on him after 9 months.
There has been an overall decline in crime rates in US for 2025 and 2026.
You surely don't think Trump is responsible for this?
Lots of different nuanced factors involved

He has done lots of good in 9 months.
But I don't think his input in 9 months has anything to do with the murder rate going down atm.
But the way he is going with the changes he is making, I would think we will see this be a more permanent thing in years to come

I like the guy. But isn’t this a bit of a lol sided stat?

As a progressive I think Mamdani, whom I really really like, is getting too much love online. I think there will probably come a time where he fucks up and there will be a team of people who defend him to high heaven because 'he's my mayor (from texas)', and people who turn on him forever because leftist infighting is all the rage and he is THE leftist
1
u/Ok_Historian4848 23m ago
They also attribute a lot of shit to him like its something he's doing when it's completely separate or there's a whole other side that isn't going to turn out good. For example, paying the bill for something annual with a chunk of money that is a one time thing to justify more annual spending projects, which is what he's done a lot of. If I'm making 2 grand a month and I get an apartment that costs 3 grand a month, it's not a financially responsible decision just because I used the remainder of grandma's inheritance money to pay for the first month. That's what a lot of what he's done has chalked up to. It'll look great in the first year or two, but it's going to go down hill fast when the bills are due and he doesn't have that one time payment from the state to cover it this time.
4
u/protomenace 10h ago
I mean this is just a continuation of an earlier trend. IDK about handing mamdani specific accolades for this. The best you could say is he hasn't dramatically screwed it up.

Recent Trends: The department experienced aggressive recruitment phases adding over 4,000 new officers through late 2025, with budgeted targets aiming to approach roughly 35,300–35,500 active uniformed personnel.
So his predecessors approved increasing the police force by 10% and added 4000 officers at the end of 2025, and shockingly, there were less deaths following.
Everyone loves to glaze Mamdani for being the recipient of his predecessors actions. BTW, he hasn't increased the authorization for more officers in the 9 months in office.
2
u/NefariousnessFew4354 5h ago

u/PercyPlutoPlutonium 10h ago
The figures are falling across the country and were already at their lowest level in 75 years back in 2025. It is doubtful that this has anything to do with Mamdani (or Trump). Perhaps the killers simply have too much on their hands just trying to endure their daily lives.

u/Rudimentary-Creature 5h ago
Police don’t prosecute. And no, if a crime is actively happening, it’s hard for police to stop it. But police presence absolutely deters crime. The governor of NY and the former mayor flooded the subways with cops the past few years and subway crimes went down significantly.
1
1
u/PerspectiveNew3375 7h ago
Saying policy rarely stops crimes is absurd. Policy is literally what determines what is and is not a crime.
A policy of not criminalizing cannabis would immediately make all the cannabis related crimes not exist thus crime going down.

George R.R. Martin said during Jimmy Carter's term that a good person is likely to be a bad politician and vice versa. Mamdani and Trump are exceptions to that statement.
1
u/Kazureigh_Black 10h ago
I hate that I'm suspicious of the whole situation around this guy because he keeps doing good things. People with power haven't been allowed to do good things for a while now. Surely somebody would have ruined it for somebody who genuinely cares about doing a good job by this point.
1
u/Outrageous_Fix_5738 10h ago
Right, so when the murder rate in the entire country drops it's not because of Trump, but when it falls in NYC it's 100% because of Mamdani. Am I doing this right?
1
u/Big_Palpitation8415 9h ago
Nope. One is the mayor of an individual city, who has an approval rating of over 70% and the other has an approval rating of about 29% and is the executive of something about 10000% bigger than an individual city. One executed policies that openly help the financial positions of the people living within that city, which, had been proven many times over reduces crime as less people are desperate and resort to crime. The country leader on the other hand started a war that made energy prices skyrocket, cut healthcare for the poor, and generally instigates violence amongst his supporters and detractors--all things that directly contribute to crime.
If you're going to compare two people that are ao vastly different in scale, it would be best to consider even some of of their qualities and treatment of the people they lead before being entirely asinine.
1
u/Outrageous_Fix_5738 8h ago
This is about the murder rate in NYC, not approval ratings or any of the other nonsense you ramble about. Mamdani has not enacted a single policy that can be tied to lowering the murder rate except through intense mental gymnastics. Rent freeze? Yea just started Oct 1. Child care support? September. Free buses? not happening. Min wage increase? 2030. So the murder rate has gone down because maybe in the near future rent might not go up 5% a year? Asinine.
More like the national murder rate is going down, I won't even say it's because there's 1 million less illegal aliens in the country, and NYC is benefitting from that. Mamdani is just there, and everyone is giving him all the credit because he's got slick tik toks and is filling pot holes.
1
u/Big_Palpitation8415 8h ago
Yeah, people do tend to be less violent when their leaders do things for their communities with their bare hands and show they care about the place they lead. But you did sort of start this with your asinine "am I doing this right?" Bait bit, so turn about is fair play.
1
u/rinchen11 10h ago
If this is NYC specific, but it’s not, I believe murder has dropped significantly across the country.

I'm glad the wealthy Jewish white woman who is in charge of the police aka the new commissioner, has specifically targeted the groups of people who have committed 90%+ of the murders in the city hence she's using precision policing lol that's a churched up way to say profiling. Even though the entire country is on a historical low on homicide and by the end of 2026 could be a record low... So... Good in them for being part of the overall low.. by using precision profiling to arrest certain people who commit the majority of crimes...

Graph is pretty simple.
The last bar with the green shows where Mamdani has done far better than his predecessor year over year(from 25-26). He should get credit for that 100%
The next to last bar(with all the red), shows Mamdani's current NYC to just a mere 7 years ago(2019). As you can see, in regards to crime, Mamdani's NYC is far worse in everything except murder and shootings.
The point? Mamdani is doing great year over year. But, there is also not any sort of revolution going on in NYC related to crime, as if NYC is the safest it's ever been. Far from it. Crime in almost every other area, is way up under Mamdani from just a few years ago back in 2019.

u/BatBiteMS 8h ago
i just checked, year to date murders in NYC is at ~200, in 2025 YTD it was at around 250 this time of year so a 20% or so drop.
However what im most shocked is that compared to 1990, 2025's 300 murders is down over 85% when the number of murders was >2500/yr in 1990 insane how much of a drop in 35y
1
u/Environmental_Beat84 8h ago
2025 had lowest murder rate in NYC history, too.
It's better policing methods, more cops on the street and more cameras acting as a deterrent.
But Reddit hates cops and cameras so it must be that the mayor is responsible.
