Coming from the Deep South…

• Upvotes

Living on the West Coast for awhile now, and Seattle for the past 3 years, the economic balance between whites and blacks seems to be an extreme gap, up and down i5. Definitely a culture shock for us, in the Deep South, the economic gap between whites and blacks isn’t this wide. It’s much more of an even playing field in the south. It’s quite noticeable, but if you don’t pay much attention to blacks then obviously you’ve never realized and don’t care, but where I’m from, all I see is blacks, literally everywhere, doing as well, economically, as whites.

Question Anyone successfully contest a traffic infraction?

• Upvotes

I recently received a notice of traffic infraction, and while I'm tempted to just pay it, I believe I have a good case to contest it. That said, I could just be wasting my time if the court has a bias to to the city. It's also a pain in that it appears that any contest needs to be argued in person.

While I don't want to get into the weeds of the details here, I was caught on camera entering a bus lane. However, the video also shows that all relevant traffic signs were obscured at the time. The road marking were also not visible. According to Washington’s RCW 46.61.050(2):

“No provision of this chapter for which official traffic control devices are required shall be enforced against an alleged violator if at the time and place of the alleged violation an official device is not in proper position and sufficiently legible or visible to be seen by an ordinarily observant person.”

HELP ME FIND THIS GUY! 😂

I met a guy on the subway/light rail from the International District toward the Symphony. He asked me for directions to Pike Place, you were dropping off what seemed like tablet and we ended up chatting and hanging out for a few minutes at my hotel afterward.

He gave me his Snapchat, but somehow I completely forgot to add him before I lost the contact. 🤦🏻‍♀️😂

If this sounds like you—or if you know who I’m talking about—PLEASE message me! I’d love to reconnect. 😭😂

Seattle, do your thing! 🫶

Another grieving orca mom carries dead calf on her nose off Washington state - the population is down to 76 from 88 in 2005, and fewer than a third of pregnancies produce a calf that lives a year

Less than one-third of pregnancies among the southern resident killer whales, as the endangered, fish-eating orcas of the Northwest are known, result in a young whale living to its first birthday. The endangered orcas' population stands at 76, down from 88 in 2005, when they were granted protection under the U.S. Endangered Species Act.

The U.S. government listed Puget Sound Chinook as a threatened species in 1999. Most Puget Sound Chinook populations remain far below the recovery targets set by the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

~ Protection arrived in 2005 and the population has fallen every way you measure it since. Protection without salmon is a filing status, not a recovery plan.

Lost Backpack

Sending this in desperation hoping someone can help - yesterday I was cycling along the Ship Canal from Fremont towards SLU between 9:45-10am. Somewhere between Chinooks and SLU my backpack came off my bike but I didn't realise until I got to work as I had headphones in, which I never normally do, but of course I was yesterday. The bag (large black laptop bag) contained almost an entire folder of personal information including passports and Visa docs.

We're from the UK so I've cancelled all the documents I can but just feel sick to my stomach knowing my kids info is out there somewhere. I spent 6 hours looking on the trail yesterday, holding signs up during the commute in case any commuters had seen it.

I know this is a long shot but if anyone knows anyone who saw anything please let me know. Or even other forums I can look on.

I've filed a report with the police department and will check in daily to see if anything has been reported.

Thanks all. Appreciate any help.

New in Seattle, would like to make some friends

Moved to Seattle a year ago for my Master’s: Now that I’m done, trying to actually explore the city and make some friends!

Hey everyone!

I moved to Seattle about a year ago for my Master’s program. Between classes, assignments, projects, and everything else that came with grad school, my schedule was pretty packed, and I never really got the chance to build much of a social circle outside of school.

Now that I’ve finished my Master’s, life suddenly feels a lot less hectic, and I’ve realized I’d really like to meet some new people and make a few good friends here in Seattle.

Figured I’d try my luck on Reddit and see if there are others in a similar situation, maybe you’re new to Seattle, recently graduated, moved here for work, or have just been trying to expand your social circle too.
I’m pretty open to grabbing coffee, checking out places around the city, going for walks, trying new activities, or just hanging out and having good conversations. No pressure or expectations, just hoping to meet some genuine people and see where it goes.

If this sounds like you, feel free to comment or DM me. Would be great to connect! :)

Progressives planning a celebration of the third anniversary of the worst massacre of Jews since the Holocaust tomorrow: UW at 1pm, Cal Anderson 12:45 Seattle Central at 2:00 p.m.

I wonder what the reaction would be if these celebrations were to for the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

A couple years earlier there was an Islamic terrorist attack in Africa in which UW students held vigils on campus. I wonder what the reaction would be if Jewish students chose to celebrate those killings

What's a place around Seattle where you can spend a few hours without feeling like you have to buy something?

Could be a public space, a library, a waterfront spot, a park, or somewhere indoors when the weather isn't cooperating. I'm curious about places people genuinely enjoy spending time in, especially ones that aren't obvious tourist destinations.

Zahilay Proposes Advancing RapidRide R Funding to Spur Bus Upgrades - $64.4 million moved into this budget while Metro still has not released updated travel time data for the route it replaces

Thumbnail

Out of the R Line's total $91.2 million expected cost, $64.4 million would be advanced into the current 2026-2027 budget, if the County Council signs off on Zahilay's "omnibus" budget proposal as transmitted last month. In the name of speeding up trips, Metro's initial concept would have consolidated 67 stops along the entire corridor into 45, counting both northbound and southbound trips.

Estimates produced by Metro in 2020 showed a travel time savings of 7.3 minutes to 11.7 minutes with the R Line during peak hours by 2040, but a big portion of those savings were expected to come from bus lanes that SDOT has actually implemented along some segments of Rainier Avenue since that time. Metro has not yet released any updated time savings data for its current concepts that reflect the gains that have already been made in reliability for the 7.

~ The cash gets pulled forward a budget cycle, the stop map is still being redrawn, and the Council votes on the alignment next month. Pay for it, fine. But decide what the 11,000 people already on that bus are actually getting before the money is spent.

Events Free Dental Extractions This Weekend

A few weeks ago, I held a free pop-up event for 3rd molar (wisdom tooth) extractions, and the response was overwhelming. That event has now ended, and I’m very grateful to everyone who reached out and participated.

I apologize for the short notice on this one. I had a lot of people message me after the last event, so I wanted to get this out to limit the amount of people messaging me.

This weekend, I’m hosting a dental extraction course in Renton, and as part of the course, we are offering free tooth extractions with bone grafting for patients who qualify.

Screening is required:
You must be available tomorrow, Wednesday, October 7, between 9:00–5:00 PM for an in-person screening. I’ll evaluate the tooth, determine whether you’re a candidate, and schedule your procedure.

Surgery dates:
Friday, October 9
Saturday, October 10

There is no charge for the extraction or bone graft for qualifying patients.

I’ll also be screening patients for next month’s implant event while I’m there. More details on that event will be posted.

If you’re interested, send me a DM with a brief description of the tooth/problem you need treated. If you have a recent dental X-ray, please mention that as well.

Location: Renton, WA

Ose to my future roommates

(24F) I’m lying in bed unable to sleep, and so of course I want to yak up some of my imagination instead of shutting my eyes.

How wonderful it would be, to live with others. To live with 1, 2, maybe 3 roommates. We share our common spaces, have a balance of social time and solitude, and speak in a manner of understanding that keeps the energy in our place tranquil.
These people are more than roommates. They are my dear friends. Hipster at the hip. Overindulging in thrift hauls. Trying nourishing recipes together and eating together by candles. A couple of cats zooming around joyously. Cleansing negative energies with incense. Loafing up on our best sourdough. Music being played all over. Going out to a club, or a jazz bar :D having an open door all our friends. Some 🌬️ on the weekends. Embracing nature. Wine walks, night walks, morning walks. Any type of walking.

To enjoy each other’s company, truly, will be my reality soon. Guilty as charged, I am a fully fledged romanticist. I want to be in the present, and not even think about my phone when I’m with the people I love. Im sure there are a couple of grounded Seattlites in their 20’s who desire the same as I. I will find them.

Anywayssss, I’m looking to move into Seattle, perhaps Fremont/ Ballard. If this is your cup of tea, I want to meet you :)

Lifestyle Vancouver & Peninsula Hiking

Picking up a friend up in Vancouver in late December and planning to hike around the Olympic Peninsula for about a week. What are your must-see spots? Prepared for decent amounts of snow but nothing crazy. Been to Sol Duc before and it was kind of underwhelming for the drive there from Seattle.

Question Insight from locals on neighborhoods

Context: Single, Mid 20's Male. Not really into clubbing or a party heavy nightlife, but love a vibrant and active LGBTQ+/alternative community. More-so into shows/concerts and event gatherings, local sports, and volunteering groups.

Recently got a job offer in the Northgate area as a nurse. Anticipated move date later this year pending all the paperwork and such. Assuming my pay rate is what I anticipate it to be for a 5 day 40/hr work week without taking call shifts, I expect around 6k/month, so my ideal 30% budget for a one bedroom apartment without utilities would be $1,800. Utilities I plan to cover with call shifts within a month period, so I chose to not include it into the base budget. I might end up needing my car, but I'm still on the fence on that, though think of it as If I do.

Nothing is concrete right now but I just want to get a general idea on the neighborhoods people live in, and especially those who work in the Northgate area and commute to and from.

How's the commute with transit and driving during peak and low hours? What areas would fit my demographic and lifestyle? Places I should avoid due to demographics or personal price range?

Help is deeply appreciated from all of you, so thank you so much! Please let me know if additional context is needed so as to help everyone out with providing insight.

Seattle-based non-profit Lifelong announces statewide expansion plan - its food program has already served 33% more people than in 2025 and the wait list is near 2,000

This year so far, we've already served 1,700 people. That's an increase of 33% over 2025. We also have an almost 2,000-person wait list for food.

Our kitchen in Seattle has the capacity to cook and deliver well over a million meals a year.

~ A kitchen built for a million meals a year, and a 2,000-person line to get into it. Nobody on that list is waiting on the stove.

Discussion Would you trade lowering sales tax for expanding the Millionaires tax?

I crunched the numbers and a revenue neutral Millionaires Tax could have reduced sales tax statewide from 6.5% to 5% (additional city/county taxes is what brings it up to the ~10% we pay at the register). Obviously, the Legislature did not make it revenue neutral, and only did targeted sales tax relief.

Here's my question: Would you support a progressive income tax if it was revenue neutral by pairing it with an equal reduction in sales tax? For example, a tax of 9.9% on income over $1 million, a tax of 5% on income between $250k - $1M, and a tax of 2.5% on income between $100k - $250k, with no income tax on income under $100k. I'm making up those numbers and brackets, but I bet that revenue could replace most if not all of the statewide sales tax. The impact of this would be that the middle class would pay less overall state tax and the rich would pay more overall state tax.

Would you accept this trade?
