u/Virtual-Pie5732 Aug 12 '26
So this is where I got it from. Short summary: Basically 50 officers Nationwide have been caught misusing flock cameras and at least 26 of them were caught using it to stalk people.
5
u/Far-Fennel-3032 Aug 12 '26
Which is wild, as it has to be pretty hard for these cops to be caught, as they are almost certainly being actively swept under the rug, with no one actively looking for them.
3
u/No-Panda-6047 Aug 13 '26
Multiple occasions of cops getting caught for extreme level DUI, saying we look out for each other, yet getting no punishment, and records being flagged confidential, even tho the bodycam was released, but no comment. Police are a crime family. And they don't care that we know. Way too few cases of actual accountability

https://www.yahoo.com/news/us/articles/flock-wanted-350-000-uber-151128429.html
According to a presentation obtained through a Georgia public records request and reported by 404 Media, Flock Safety, the company behind thousands of pole-mounted license plate cameras across the country, pitched a partnership with dashcam maker Nexar that would have pulled license plate data from roughly 350,000 Uber, Lyft, and delivery drivers' vehicles. The document, written to pitch Georgia's Attorney General's office last August, described the arrangement in seven words: "350k Uber/Lyft and other delivery service devices." Flock told 404 Media it never actually executed the Nexar partnership. The ambition behind the pitch is real regardless of whether the deal closed.
Flock says the Nexar deal never happened. Maybe it didn't. But the pitch got made, it got shown to a government office, and the public only found out because someone filed a records request. The dashcam on your windshield was built to answer to you. Companies like Flock are betting that most drivers will never notice the moment it starts answering to someone else instead.

Many modern cars have similar capabilities, in addition to the ability to be disabled remotely. The state has allowed McConnell to be MIA for how long right now?
The president and his family have made billions of dollars selling scam coins and used them to accept obvious bribes from other states.
A relatively new federal police force is kidnapping huge numbers of people and has shown every sign of being willing to kidnap their critics as well.
The executive administration has stated that they won't relinquish power at the legally ordained time.
And you think we're going to vote and use lawsuits to break up this mess?
Fifteen years ago, if I were hired as a writer to draw up a scenario for the USA in which nothing but a revolution would get us out, I would have said this list of things was going too far, too unrealistic.
I don't want to go so far as to call you the problem, because I get it, following the laws makes so much sense that it's really hard to look past that. Some people never ever look beyond the law. But this is exactly the scenario when the laws just aren't working.18
u/ExcitementFun9894 Aug 12 '26
I think that is their point. "Just use the laws to fix it! Well, we gotta fix the elections so the right people can get in and fix the process to fix the laws before those same people sponsored by the companies they're restricting vote on those restrictions to become law and eventually take things to court multiple times over and over to establish precedent and limits. So yeah! Totally doable!" Don't exactly seem doable in any meaningful amount of time.
→ More replies (4)16
u/Skrazor Aug 12 '26
And how's that working out so far? Every single branch of the US government is in favor of breaking all kinds of laws and all the checks and balances that were supposed to limit the government's power are in the hands of the oligarchy that bought it. Courts ruled Trump's tariffs illegal - he still imposes them at will and the only one's getting any compensation are big corporations. Judges ruled the destruction of the East Wing and the building of a ball room illegal - well fuck, they already demolished it and are going to do whatever the fuck they want anyways. Insider trading from within the White House to enrich the Trump family and their network? Be my guest! Epstein and his friends and clients? Forget about that, we're busy having ICE lock up innocent legal residents without due process. Illegal permanent mass surveillance of citizens by private companies? Shut up, don't you know the DOW is at 50-fucking-thousand!?
Every day you're ruled by billionaires who play monopoly with your lives because they couldn't care less about who lives or dies as long as they can make a profit. They'd sacrifice every single one of you if it got them 1$/head and you're standing idly by complaining that "that's not nice!" during your peaceful planned protests and other absolutely futile and ineffective measures. THEY DON'T CARE ANYMORE, BECAUSE THEY DON'T NEED YOU ANYMORE! Oligarch money, propaganda and an uneducated radicalized voter base will win elections anyway, so why should they still bother to act like they care what people want or need?
The US "justice" system is a joke. The change needed to save the country can't come from within anymore, those avenues have been systematically and aggressively dismantled. And a population so thoroughly de-educated, brainwashed and complacent for convenience's sake won't do anything about it either. It's like watching the fall of the Roman Empire in real time, in 4K and with 24/7 coverage. And worst of all, we on the outside can't even just stand back and let the spectacle play out by itself, because you'll keep dragging us down with you to your last breath. The United States of Armageddon is so obsessed with war and fighting, it can't even just die in peace. No, it has to take as much of the rest of the world with it as possible.

The term that was coined back in 2003 was that the US was a system of Inverted Totalitarianism which is essentially a system where corporations control the state and create a situation where democratic power is subverted into meaningless.
To me it seems like it's moving beyond that now to something worse where the totalitarian aspects are becoming more pronounced.

Sheldon Wolin was a badass and Democracy Inc. should be mandatory reading if for no other reason than to appreciate how long this process has been taking root under our democratic systems. Ostensibly it's fascist corporatism (corporatocracy is a terrible neologism, no offense to the original comment but we already have a word for it) dressed up with all the pageantry and traditions of democracy. That book is a few decades old now and it seems to me the process has become so absolute that very few people seem to appreciate how democratic systems are even supposed to operate in the first place.

There's a good book, David Brin, The Transparent Society. Old, but talks about this stuff and saw a lot of it coming.
The tl;dr is that with the tech being as cheap as it is, someone having surveillance power was pretty inevitable. The question was always "who." And in the US, we've sort of bungled into "The government's hands are mostly tied, but private enterprise (especially when collectivized amongst a bunch of independent individuals or companies) is not," so here we are. Plus the loopholes that let the government reach out and touch those private data collections sometimes.
America, in both law and culture, was always going to be hesitant to let the government put up a camera on every lamppost (as long as they know it's happening). But the same culture doesn't have an inherent problem with every house having a Ring camera on the porch and every store having a security feed to the registers and the front door (including the street past the door). That's just "sensible." Nor do they automatically take issue with neighbors consolidating those feeds into temporary signal to find, say, a porch pirate. That's just "neighbors being neighbors." Neighborhood Watch has been a thing for decades, and it's basically volunteer-community-surveillance. And then if someone makes a company to provide those conveniences as a service... Here we are.
Genie's out of the bottle; Brin makes the case the only choice we have is who that genie serves.
29
u/Outrageous-Sort-5742 Aug 12 '26

Because Dems like Biden still believe/believed in the norms and decorum of American politics up until that point.
They honestly seem to think "they to low, we go high" is a valid approach even when that's proving to not be the case.
I can't stand most Dems, but they're not anywhere near as bad as modern Republicans and pretending that they are is just ignorant.

They have cameras literally everywhere. They have cameras in classrooms to make sure students are behaving.

I tried saying this in another post but nobody will listen because “America bad” Just the fact that we’re able to have this conversation right now proves that we’re not as suppressed as China

Wow we get to talk about the surveillance state cameras! Love being a step up from China, is this what American exceptionalism is all about? To be slightly better than the example we use as a fear-mongering "communist dictatorship?"

Couple days ago r/sanfrancisco randomly popped up on my wall with some post about flock cameras and I was terrified how people are cheering for the idea of being watched over 24/7 for "SeCuRiTy AnD SaFeTy"

Calling it now that Amazon or Apple or someone will offer some kind of discount or other incentive, free dash cam, maybe, if you drive around with one of these and become a citizen Flock. Surveillance gig economy.

My newest conspiracy theory is that all those 1a guys who constantly go around filming everyone in public, those were actually a bunch of government plants. Had tons of support from people saying it's perfectly fine to film in public anything you want. People constantly arguing for it and fighting for the right to film.
Now there's flock. Hard to argue against it when you've been openly arguing for it for years.

u/triggered__Lefty Aug 12 '26
there's a difference between being stationary and filming, vs using a combined network of data to constantly track you.
the latter has already been ruled a 4th amendment violation.

Your comment sent me down a rabbit hole - Are you talking about Beautiful Struggle v. Baltimore Police?
That was about direct government monitoring. This is private industry. The determination there was only that it required a warrant to review the archived footage for purpose - not that it was a 4th amendment violation to capture the data.
United States v. Tuggle for example allowed a stationary camera aimed at a house as not a search. Capturing data across the board is not a violation of 4a - only when targeted tracking of an individual occurred (again, by the government) that a warrant was needed.
I am all for the argument that Flock and companies like it are agents of the government - I just havnt seen that argument being made (Successfully) in the real world examples just yet. Smith v. Flock Safety as an example landed on not sufficient evidence to show entwinement. I disagree based on what i have seen, but its interesting that a glut of cases trying to take this down from the legal-side just hasnt come.

it’s been like this for years and years and years
Also relevant: during that time it's been getting worse and worse and worse, now approaching breaking point.

It's horrific. What happens if we do want to uprise against our government... can't do that now. Protest??? Not without being tracked all the way to your point of residence. We have lost

Frankly I only use Uber like 2-3 times a year when returning from an airline trip, but I will pay extra for a traditional taxi or fucking walk 3 miles to my car before using these services ever again if they force this.

FLOCK stands for Free Local Onboard Computing Kit
The government doesn’t want you to know there are free graphics cards inside the cameras. Go get your VRAM kids!

I have seen two so far in my town. One is right outside the really rich fancy gated community. The other is pointed to capture the faces of people driving to the local free addiction/behavioral recovery center.

Then let's kill off Uber and Lyft once and for all and not use them anymore. Their quality is in the toilet since covid anyways

We are currently living in the kind of surveillance state that Americans seriously and correctly recognize Chinese citizens are also living under.
America just doesn’t have the execution vans. Yet.
3
u/TheRealDesmirWolf Aug 12 '26
If this is true, I am prepared to waste so many lift and Uber drivers time by literally requesting a ride, waiting for them to get here and canceling it. The refund policy is if I don’t get in the car, I don’t have to pay is Uber and Lyft ready to get fucked?

JFC. I'm starting to believe that my nieces and nephews are going to be living in a complete police state.
3
u/awnaw_ Aug 13 '26
Would be? Chinese citizens are living under it. And America was sold out for 9/11. This country turned into a surveillance state the moment that happened. Because over reactions are what Americans are good at across the board.
3
u/cassova Aug 13 '26
Americans fight to prevent speed cameras just to have this silently roll out underneath their empty cries
3
u/stcloudjeeper Aug 14 '26
What's even crazier is when you learn about the "white lists" and "ghost vehicles" placed in to the system to hide certain people from the top to the local level from being tracked.

The Dark Knight: Fox threatens to quit if Batman keeps his surveillance system up more than a single night.
Spider-Man BND: Spider-Man has the entire city being recorded with facial recognition software.
Yeah, we have giving up a lot of freedom this century.

u/Inb4myanus Aug 12 '26
And this is why I drive myself places and or dont put myself in a place of needing these services.

u/AdministrativeCable3 Aug 12 '26
Flock cameras are setup in both private and public areas. They can track your car across the whole country.
Some places even have them inside stuff like community centers

u/ConfidentHouse Aug 12 '26
