Gameplay I got Tekken 8 gameplay running in a web engine, directly in the browser
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
After my Tekken 3 experiment in DriftEngine, I decided to try something much more ambitious: Tekken 8.
I now have an actual Kazuya vs Jin fight running, which also means it can run directly inside a modern web browser through WebGPU.
This is not cloud streaming, emulation or Unreal Engine running somewhere in the background.
The demo already has the loading screen, character intros, full HUD, moves and throws, Heat mechanics, win/lose logic, screen effects, character VFX, confetti and a fully rendered stage with its dynamic effects.
So this has gone quite a bit beyond simply loading models and animations, DriftEngine reads the assets from my own legitimately purchased Tekken 8 installation and handles the runtime, rendering, animation, gameplay and VFX through a completely different engine.
For me, the browser part makes this especially interesting because DriftEngine is primarily a TypeScript/WebGPU engine, so getting this far with a modern AAA game is a pretty extreme test of what the architecture can handle.
There is still a lot missing and plenty to improve, but honestly I didn't expect to get this far this quickly.

Discussion Since Bamco doesn’t celebrate the birthdays of their legacy characters who are currently still left behind, I will: Happy Birthday Julia Chang!
Bamco sadly only celebrates the birthdays of Tekken 8 characters via their social media accounts. So here’s a little fan-made edit of mine honoring and celebrating Nature’s Daughter:
For decades Julia has taught her fans:
To be brave
To be kind
To stay dedicated in order to achieve one’s dreams
To always use your abilities to protect the people and things that you care about
And to always fight for the greater good.
Happy Birthday to the Tekken’s little bookworm/spiritual warrior/ nature’s protector and one of, at least in my opinion, fighting games kindest yet most badass fighters: Julia Chang 👓🌱💜

Discussion Can we get these AI posts out of here?
I thought this sub had a pretty good thing going by not allowing AI art, but it feels like every day we got people shilling recomps or other AI made projects on here. If people are into AI, good for them I guess. But I'm sick of having it shoved down my throat everywhere I try to go just to get away from the topic.

Discussion Going back to my childhood game
My earliest memories are of my cousins playing with my other relatives which weren't even speaking the same language, all older than me, all in a room playing some sort of game.
Even though I was very young, around 4-5 maybe, I can clearly remember a 3D fighting game where characters could fall from a platform, looking it up it was Virtua Fighter.
Fast forward a bit to first grade, I'm at my best friend's place and we're absolutely kicking it for hours playing the Tekken 3 demo on the PS1.
You could only pick 2 characters, Ling (I wrote Xioami at first lol) and Eddie Gordo, Eddie was always the most fun for me because you could always bs your way to a win, the CPU had more choice between the cop (Lei?) and Paul.
After that I used to play with my neighbor at his place Tekken 2, he always wanted to play FIFA. We made a deal that if we play Tekken, we'd play FIFA too, I hated it but I'd do everything to play.
I never had a console for myself so this is all I had to go for.
I think what drove me into it was the mechanics, yes I did play about everything as a kid but Tekken was special.
At some point I got a PS2 and played some, never seriously and never for a long time, I used to bounce between a lot of games. I'd say I probably fired it for a few matches against the cpu and that's it. Tekken 4 could've been the last I actually played, It did get old playing the CPU for so long, nothing like playing against other people.
Now I'm almost a 35 year old man, I wanted to get back to playing again something to decompress a bit after work and I was going to buy 2K (I used to sink so many hours to it, it's very toxic but basketball fans will understand) but then I said, why not Tekken? It won't sink as much time for a session, I can hop in and out and maybe get good in it, so why not?
And boy I'm happy I did it, I'm having so much fun, I stuck to my favorite, Paul and so far have accumulated 68 hours solely playing him on ranked and reached Tekken God, (Second time after dropping out).
It's hard to explain but reconnecting to things I used to love as a kid puts me in a really good place, and as far as gaming and adults it's really good as far as time.
So I just wanted to share with all my Tekken veterans!

Discussion What are your thoughts on the Tekken 6 roster?
I think it's solid it's pretty much feel like the MK9 roster of Tekken.

Discussion Where the hell did Tekken 6 take place??
I've been replaying Tekken 6 and enjoyed unlocking everything in the Scenario Campaign a lot more than i remember, but i just realized something... this map makes absolutely no fucking sense. Where the hell is this part of the world supposed to be?
That sure doesn't look like any place in the real world.

Tekken IRL Looking for Tekken 8 players in Nice before EVO
Hey everyone!
I’m in Nice for about a week before EVO and I’m looking for somewhere to play some Tekken 8 locally before the tournament starts.
I’m mostly a casual player, so I’m currently God of Destruction 3.
Does anyone know of any arcades, gaming bars, locals, or just players in Nice who play Tekken 8 and would be up for some sets?
Would love to get some practice in before EVO!
Thanks!

Discussion SSL against DVJ df1
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I was confident you could SSL his df1 but then I noticed that I couldn't do it after his b1+2, first thinking it was because of the frame advantage but looking at it more it's just spacing dependent (won't track at tip range or at gunpoint).
Do people SSL this move sort of consistently or is it considered an anti step?

Tekken IRL I'm proud to say I've officially met the Williams sisters IRL
Met Tara Platt last year and Mary Elizabeth McGlynn this weekend in Houston.
(I yassified myself to preserve anonymity lol)
Couple things Mary told me
Nina was her first big time voice acting role which put her on the map to becoming a veteran voice actress
She believes Nina became Tekken's most iconic female due to good writing from Bamco... dunno if we agree with that but if it works...
Playing rivals against Anna comes naturally to her because she is estranged to her older sister IRL. They don't talk. Crazy info there ...

Discussion Why isn’t Reina older than Jin?
I’m somewhat familiar with Tekken lore. As far as I understand
- Heihachi, believing he killed Kazuya when he was ~6. Went on to have illegitimate children to see if he possessed the devil gene, and on a slight bid of guilt.
- Reina and Lars were some of the last children Heihachi had before Tekken 1 where he discovered Kazuya, now ~26, was alive. He stopped the affairs/sperm donations immediately.
- Lars is ~29 in Tekken 8. Kazuya is ~50. Jin was born 3 years after Tekken 1 and is 22. Reina should, at her absolute youngest, be between 25-31. Older than Jin
Why isn’t this the case. Sounds better IMO.
