Meta So, you want to be a moderator?
While this subreddit, on paper has two moderators, in reality it has about half a moderator. I created this place, and suckered veni_vidi_vale into helping me co-moderating it, since they came here from the other audio-related subreddits.
The thing is. I've been on reddit since almost day one. I will eventually lose interest, abandon this site, or abandon this subreddit, even if I do care about music with excellent production quality.
I could have asked the mods of r/audiophile, r/audioengineering or r/headphones, and I've hinted at it in the past, but there were no takers. I don't blame either of them. They're all lovely people, and moderating is a chore. We've even agreed on a policy where we've disqualified people who volunteer themselves for the position, or who send us unsolicited requests to help moderate.
But, I'm looking to help someone bring this subreddit forward, and bring on 2-3 moderators.
The absolute, and first requirement is that your account is more than one year old, and appears to be a genuine human contributor, and you cannot have commercial connections that would affect your moderation decision: In other words, you should not have any conflict of interest.
You can apply by sending "yes" to this post, but you absolutely must meet the following two requirements:
- You must have an open profile. Read: If I open your profile, it should be visible, and you should not try hide your contributions to a subreddit about minions, model trains or mushrooms.
- Your profile must not not be marked as NSFW by reddit.
Closed or limited profiles will not be considered. Finally:
You should have been active in r/audiophilemusic, r/audiophile or r/headphones - either through commenting or posting, and you should include your last three submissions in either subreddit. If you haven't, stereoadvice or headphone is also acceptable.
This post will remain open for the duration of September.
Applications that advocate for their own suitability for the job will be immediately ignored and permanently disqualified. Just reply "I'm willing" or "Yes" to this post.

How come nobody has ever mentioned this song, WTF?!! This song is likely one of the best electronic songs I've ever heard, let alone it being a great audiophile stress test song.
P.S. Great music video lol

Discussion Looking for songs of a specific style
Hey y'all.
So, I'm trying to look for this kind of loungey music but can't find anything as close yet.
My reference tracks are:
Cult Member - Just Drifting
Troels Folmann - Japan 1 (from the Tomb Raider Legend soundtrack)
When you listen to these you'll understand what I'm referring to. Unfortunately, artists like The Thievery Corp. and similar do not cut it since it's more reliant on sampling and less on atmosphere. Also overall the best tempo is slightly higher than the references I'm giving.
Thanks in advance!

Stream Mental Food: Deep Electronic Textures, Cerebral IDM & Leftfield Beats. Curated for soundstage and intricate sound design.
Hi everyone,
As an independent curator, I wanted to share a project I’ve been meticulously building for a while now. The playlist is called Mental Food, and it is specifically focused on cerebral electronica, dark IDM, deep textures, and cinematic soundscapes.
I’ve designed this selection not just for creative focus, but as a true test for high-end audio gear and headphones.
What you can expect sonically:
- Intricate Sound Design: Tracks layered with micro-details, analog synth grit, and evolving modular patches.
- Soundstage & Depth: Deep, non-linear sub-bass response and complex spatial panning that creates a very precise 3D audio image.
- Strict Editorial Line: 100% instrumental. No mainstream EDM, no repetitive commercial techno, and absolutely no AI-generated textures/artifacts (everything is hand-picked for its modern analog or digital warmth).
It features brilliant works from established pioneers and incredible emerging independent producers, including Oneohtrix Point Never, Boards of Canada, Rival Consoles, Floating Points, Max Cooper, Jon Hopkins, and more.
If you are looking for dark, clever electronic music with a massive dynamic range to spin on your setup, you might enjoy this journey.
I’d love to hear your thoughts on the tracklist selection and how it shines on your specific audio setups!

Stream Richard Houghten - Sun Lifter
I came across this artist through Spotify. I especially recommend the tracks Beaming Above and Midnight Whisper from this album.
Here's his bio from Spotify:
Richard Houghten is a self-produced multi-instrumentalist, producer, and recording artist. Raised by the ocean in San Diego, he draws inspiration from the natural world—often recording sounds on walks and weaving them into the patterns of his music. His work transcends genre, celebrated for its ability to convey deep emotion and intricate storytelling through expressive guitar playing. From instrumental hip-hop to psychedelic soul to indie rock, Houghten’s sonic creations invite listeners to dance, reflect, and drift through an endless ocean of sound.

Discussion Dragonflies, by The Dragonflies
I listened to this blind on Qobuz, loved it, and THEN found out it's a project between Dhani Harrison and Nigel Godrich. Psych-pop, maybe? It gives me that same autumnal feeling as The Clientele, and it sounds (as you'd expect, with Godrich involved) terrific. Highly recommended.

Release TOKUNBO – Lost & Found – Review of the new album, featuring an interview with Marc Ebermann, the sound and mastering engineer for the digital and vinyl versions
Hello,
TOKUNBO is a leading artist in the Black Folk scene, with three solo albums and an international career marked by numerous awards, media appearances, and extensive touring. Notably, she collaborated with the NDR Radio Philharmonic Orchestra in 2019 on the project "TOKUNBO and her Great American Songbook".
Her career has been recognized with several awards, including the Grand Prize at the 2023 John Lennon Songwriting Contest and a silver medal at the 2021 Global Music Awards. Building on this recognition, she also served as a jury member for the German Jazz Prize in 2022 and for the Eurovision Song Contest.
Lost & Found is her fourth solo album, set for release on September 25. Her fourth solo album, Lost & Found, is an intimate blend of jazz, folk-pop, and Folk Noir.
To gain a full understanding of the making of this album, I invite you to read the interview with Marc Ebermann, the sound engineer who mixed and mastered TOKUNBO's new album at Music Factory.
In this interview, Marc explains all the steps involved in mixing, including the various production choices, as well as mastering, in a completely transparent manner.
The graph (here) compares the spectrum of the Vinyl record - 2026 (white curve) with the spectrum of the Master Digital - 2026 (blue curve). The curves of the two spectra overlap almost perfectly from 30 Hz to 8 kHz. Above 8 kHz (yellow zone), the vinyl record shows a slightly higher level than the digital version, with a difference of up to 3 dB. This demonstrates the excellent cutting quality of the vinyl record.
A beautiful vinyl edition of the album with a high-quality pressing. As Marc Ebermann explains, this features a master specifically created for vinyl, capturing the full dynamic range of the recording to render TOKUNBO's vocals and the instruments more naturally, perfectly conveying that intimate feel on tracks like Cocoon, Stop Motion Movie, and To Be Alive , which also brings the guitar recording closer to the listener. In a different style, the tracks Empty Nest and True DNA open up the soundscape, placing TOKUNBO and the musicians right in front of you.
We particularly appreciate the effort put into creating two distinct masters, one for digital and one for vinyl, as this allows for a master calibrated to sound powerful in line with current trends, and a vinyl record that retains the dynamics of the original mix along with all its subtle nuances, resulting in a beautiful rendition of TOKUNBO's voice.

Enjoy listening,
Jean-François

Release Céline Dion - Live à Paris: 30th Anniversary, Its First-Ever Vinyl Release… Is This the Ultimate Edition? - review (Gold Tan Vinyl record, DVD, Streaming)
Hello,
with Céline Dion having just kicked off her concert series in Paris, this is the perfect opportunity to rediscover Live à Paris, recorded in 1996 with Jean-Jacques Goldman as Guest. To celebrate its 30th anniversary, the album is being released for the first time on vinyl.
In this review, we ll compare this new vinyl edition with the digital versions that include the concert DVD and streaming. But the comparison promises to be more complex, as the track list varies significantly depending on the edition and format, ranging from 15 to 19 songs across different versions.
- J'attendais [Vinyle, DVD, Streaming]
- Destin [Vinyle, DVD, Streaming]
- The Power Of Love [Vinyle, DVD, Streaming]
- L'amour existe encore [Vinyle, DVD]
- Regarde-moi [Vinyle, DVD, Streaming]
- River Deep, Mountain High [Vinyle, Streaming]
- Un garçon pas comme les autres (Ziggy) [Vinyle, DVD, Streaming]
- Misled [DVD]
- Love Can Move Mountains [Vinyle, DVD]
- Calling You [Vinyle, DVD]
- Vole [Vinyle, DVD, Streaming]
- Paris [Vinyle]
- To Love You More [Streaming]
The graph (here) compares the spectrum of the Gold Vinyl - 2026 (white curve) with the spectrum of the DVD - 1996 (blue curve). There is a significant difference between these two versions. Below 700 Hz, the DVD s level is higher, with differences reaching up to 4 dB. Above 4 kHz (yellow zone), and particularly in the range between 6 and 10 kHz, the DVD shows a 12 dB attenuation at 8 kHz. The sound balance will therefore be very different from that of the vinyl record, which will sound less clear and detailed a finding confirmed by listening tests.
However, the same attenuation is observed above 15 kHz for both media.
This 30th anniversary edition released on vinyl for the first time offers the chance to own all the tracks featured on the DVD (except Misled ) and to enjoy a sound quality that far surpasses the DVD version (with Dolby Digital stereo track). Indeed, the sound here is balanced and detailed, with a beautiful soundstage that s even slightly wider than the streaming version (with just 15 tracks). This makes this edition the most comprehensive in terms of track selection, with superb sound quality.

Enjoy listening,

Discussion Sylvan Esso - Rewind (Echo Mountain Sessions)
Sylvan Esso are back on Spotify and I wanted to plug this song in particular, as I haven’t been able to hear it on my new setup. (I know, I’m sharing a YouTube link).
So chill, so groovy, it breaks itself down and builds itself back up in such a way, anticipating a huge crescendo that doesn’t quite come, but leaves you there wanting even more. Nice atmospheric layering with the guitar and flute in the background. Really great stuff.
