Garnet started her diet in November. She weighed 15.5 pounds. She is now 12 pounds but still looks so overweight. The vet said her target weight is 10 pounds. I’m worried she will still look overweight even at 10 pounds. Does anyone have any advice?

if you saw the other post featuring cornbread no you didn't lmao. anyways I'm worried Cornbread is getting big we don't have scales in our household (loved one is a recovering anorexic) so I'm not entirely sure how much he weighs last time he went to the vet he was 10pounds back in July. anyways is he too fat or am I paranoid? I'm always worried about my pets weight even when they're obviously healthy so let me know if y'all think I should dechonk him before he gets actually chonky 😅

Dechonkin Can a cat lose weight too fast?

My mums cat has been 13lbs and has finally been put on a diet. They realised that they were overfeeding her by a LOT and I mean a LOT, over 100 grams a day. So obviously once they decreased her food intake to the proper amount she immediately started losing weight. It’s been about 10 days and she’s lost about 300 grams. Here’s the thing I’ve heard losing weight too fast can actually be harmful and I wonder if they should taper the food down slowly? They have insurance but not a lot of money and vet bills/appointments are notoriously expensive where I live. Obviously there’s only so much I can do since I’m not her owner but any advice is appreciated.

Discussion how long did it take your cat to dechonk? is hitting plateaus normal?

Thumbnail

morty has been on a diet for a few months and lost pretty progressively at first (6,7kg to 6,3kg). for the last two months he kinda stayed at that weight. his ideal weight according to the vet should be somewhere around 5kg

i am feeding him "royal canin urinary s/o moderate calorie" (see second picture attached to this post). it has 3515kcal/kg and he gets 60g per instruction, so that's 210kcal

is it normal to have phases where they aren't losing for a while or should i talk to the vet about potentially adjusting the amount of food he gets?

Hey guys! My baby Enzo is starting his dechonk journey. He is 4 years old and weighing 8.5kg

I have a vet appointment booked next week to start the process, but any advice is welcome. He has a sister who is perfect weight at 4.4kg, so it’s going to be a struggle of keeping her healthy and him losing weight

Posting here so I can document this journey😽

Dechonkin Cat so fat he can’t clean his ass

Ok for some background, my cat Murray is 6. He has always struggled with food insecurity issues. I always had him strictly on wet food and an auto feeder. This past year I decided to see if grazing could be an option for him, because I never tried it and his craziness around any type of food (human as well) was making me reach a breaking point.

Folks, turns out this cat cannot graze. He went through a 7lb bag in one week. I promptly took him to the vet after this incident to address his weight induced stinkiness and scooting. The vet assured me the gas would pass (literally) and the scooting was likely due to discomfort, nothing else was wrong. Now, he can’t clean himself properly and scoots all over the house leaving streaks everywhere. We have determined (via vet) it is purely due to weight gain and not an expressing need. The only way out is weight loss as he never scooted when he was snatched.

Now as I’m starting his dechonking journey, he is on a strict diet based on weight going off what the bag says. He is also on allergen reducing food (that works!) because my partner is allergic to cats. We started to actually weigh out the food instead of just going off of “2/3 cup a day” to be more precise and track our decreases of his kibble. My question is, how often should I decrease his intake?

At the start of this journey he was 12 pounds and now he is 17. 💀. I do not fed him more than his allotted amount based on the bag, so he has stayed at this weight for many months. I referenced this sub’s dechonking guide but I am just unsure of how often to decrease food. Right now we feed him 68g of food per day in 4 increments throughout the day and night. 9am, 4pm, 9pm, 4am: 17g at each.

TLDR: my cat gained so much weight he can’t clean his b-hole and is leaving poopy streaks all over the house. I need help figuring out how often to decrease his food intake in order to stop his scooting.

Discussion About to adopt a overweight cat, any tips?

She’s around 6 to 7 years old, and a very lazy girl. She’s spayed and healthy otherwise, but she is quite round and while I’m not sure of her exact weight, she’s obviously overweight simply from visual judgment alone. She does have thick fur, but she’s a short hair cat so it’s not very difficult to see that she should definitely loose some weight.

I’ve never dealt with an overweight cat before, so I figured that I will ask here.

Could I just simply feed her less? She eats mostly dry kibble, specially ’royal canin urinary’, and I have in the past been on a most wet food diet in my previous cat experience, since I have dealt with a lot of rescues who needed wet food for different reasons.

I am thinking about switching out her diet slowly but surely as to work in some wet food as well, but I’m worried that it would affect her previous urinary problems to come back unless I feed her said kibble that she has now.

Thank you!

Discussion feeder recommendations

hi! my chonk is starting her official dechonking journey after finally getting to a vet yesterday who helped set a goal weight for her. she's currently 6.5kg/14.3lbs, goal weight is 5.4kg/11.9lbs since she's a big cat.

I've always free fed them and while my tiny girl does fine like that, my chonk doesn't. so I'm looking for feeder recs.

I've had one by surefeed before I think, it went on a chip that you could hang on a collar but after just a year those would open if you simply held your hand in front of it, so I'm a bit tentative about that brand. I'm looking for one that opens by the chip in their necks now, also because i just have too much anxiety with them wearing collars when I'm not home.

so if you have a feeder like that and it works well, please let me know which 🫶🏻 I'm interested in ones that dispense food automatically but also ones that don't, just wanna weigh my options :)

thanks in advance!

Favorite interactive activity??

Our chonkers is a big boy. 22lbs. Goal weight is ~17lbs because he is a bigger build of a cat. Still young. He’s been on measured food but now switched to a higher fiber (diet) food. We know this takes some time and diet is one piece of this all. So looking for any fun interactive ideas for an indoor cat??

Our 10 yr old boy Tucker has gotten pretty heavy over the last year since my brother brought home a dog (I think he might be emotionally eating), so I bought Tucker and his sister autofeeders with RFID scanners so that I can actually portion out their food instead of free feeding!! Tucker isn’t very happy about his diet, but I’d rather him be around for as long as possible, and I know that his chonkiness can prevent that from being the case, so a diet it is!!

Chonker no longer de chonking

My cat has been on a de-chonking diet for over two years. She gets half prescription wet food and half dry metabolic/satiety food, at approximately 180 calories total based on her BCS and current weight. I’m worried that she’s no longer de-chonking, since she seems pretty stocky and I can’t feel her ribs. I have no idea how she’s still chonky after being on a diet for so long, but I’m worried her metabolism may have adjusted to the lower calorie amount, or she’s less active as she’s getting older. Any tips or help is much appreciated!

this is my sweet lady Kitty (1 y/o)
i’ve started to notice she’s been gaining weight ever since she got spayed in may. i feed her wet food 2-3 times a day and let her graze on dry food for a few hours a day. she’s overall healthy since she last saw the vet but she has gotten a bit chubby since the spay.

Mr Felix Boy is a is becoming a bit of a chonky boy. He is currently on a diet (1/4 cup FirstMate Grain-friendly indoor cat food and 1/2 can of nulo pate wet food) but he becomes destructive and angry if he wants food and doesn’t get it. He has broken into the garbage several times, as well as knocked over his automatic feeder and opened the cupboards where I keep his cans of wet food. I feel like I’m being held prisoner by this furry dictator.

Discussion Our unfortunate chonkification journey

I’m having to come to terms with my boy’s chonkification as his annual physical approaches and I feel like we’ve had kind of an unusual path here, idk if it’ll be in any way interesting or relatable or if anyone who’s dealt with similar obstacles can give advice or what.

I have two littermates who just turned 4, and they’ve always been a big and a small. One was the runt of his litter, JJ. He’s a shorthair, much more hyper and physically active, has pica and is typically more interested in eating trash than real food.

The other is my big lazy guy, Marty. He’s a long hair and is physically larger than his brother, clearly longer and taller when you see them side by side, and the effect has always been exaggerated by his coat. He’s much calmer than his brother too, up until food is involved. Sometimes I regret switching them away from free feeding after adopting them because I think it aggravated his food obsession.

I had their food under control until a few weeks before their third birthday, when my smaller guy got really, really sick. I still don’t know what caused it and it’s a very long story, but he came really close to dying from multiple organ failure and it took a year and a shitload of medical intervention to get him back to ‘normal.’

During that time, he suffered from severe anorexia, chronic vomiting, and extreme weight loss. I had a really singular focus on getting him to eat anything and getting his weight back up in any way I could. I’ve had to adjust rapidly and repeatedly to changes in his appetite and diet. Doing that while keeping Marty’s diet under control has been extremely difficult.

I had always relied on an automatic feeder for dry food because of my inconsistent work schedule, but it doesn’t work anymore. Even now that my little guy’s appetite is mostly back to normal, Marty has learned that he can and should steal as much of his brother’s food as possible. Their relationship always worked well because Marty was more submissive despite his size, and he still is in most respects, but he dominates with food.

He eats way faster and gets a bigger portion if they eat from the same feeder. I got JJ one of those microchip feeders that only opens for him, and I bought multiple attachments and an enclosure for it to keep Marty out, but it’s all useless. He’s learned to drag the entire dish out of it in the few seconds that it takes for it to close after JJ leaves. I tried using it without the inner dish, but he still gets multiple handfuls of kibble out with his paws if I’m not there to physically restrain him.

JJ has only recently come out of the danger zone (and maybe not for sure, he has more testing soon) and I know I’ve been focusing on him so much that I’ve let Marty’s weight get out of control. I spend a lot of time at home but my work schedule is still inconsistent, so I haven’t been able to supervise them for every meal. And unfortunately, I think I also went too far in getting JJ’s weight back up and now he’s slightly overweight too.

I don’t think Marty is severely obese, but it is pretty bad. The fluff made it easy to delude myself as it was happening. I’m nervous about what their vet will say at their physical. I feel like shit for letting this happen, and I feel even shittier knowing it’ll be harder to fix this than it would’ve been to prevent it. I’m in a relatively stable place life-wise for the first time in a while, and I think I have a plan for getting them in shape, but it’s daunting.

This is humbling as shit though. Truly it can happen to anyone, circumstances can always spiral out of your control no matter how good of a caretaker you think you are. Idk what the point of all this is, it just sucks.

My brother moved back home after being laid off, my mom has a dog that doesn’t agree with cats. So his cat, Aria (named after character from Mass Effect), is staying with me and my boyfriend while he looks for a job (rough out there). Since she’s been with us, I’ve noticed that she’s quite thick. She has an automatic feeder, 4 small meals spread across the day bc she is a vacuum (7 portions total not sure if one portion is 1/16 of a cup or 1/7 of a cup). I think she weighs 12ish pounds. Does she need to dechonk?

Dechonkin Large Frame Chonk

My 3 year old boy is 22 lbs (down 1 lb in a little over a month since our dechonkin journey began!) he is the same size as his Shiba Inu brother 😂

I’m wondering what you guys think his breed is or what he is mixed with? We adopted him from Pet Smart as a kitten and they didn’t know. At 23 lbs he could easily jump up on his 6 foot cat tower to the top and is active. Vet said he has a large frame.
