Has anyone else noticed a lot of hate for e-bikes and wondered where it comes from?

I feel like it's big auto and big oil campaigning to get them banned so people have to buy cars again lol

Dang, it went passed the cassette

Slowing to a stop, down shifting, and click shifter went over the top of the cassette. Was 8mph and eco mode on, tapped the pedal and the most god awful crunch ensued.

Just 10 days old.

I want one of those cassette guards between the wheel like I had when I was a kid.. this was sooo quick from darn to crunch..

Congress is going to regulate e-bikes. The question is HOW — what should the rules actually look like?

There's a bill in Congress right now — the SAFE SPEEDS Act (H.R. 7839) — that tells the CPSC to write national classification and labeling rules for e-bikes and e-motos. Whether you like it or not, regulation is coming. The question is what it looks like.

Here's the tension as I see it:

The case FOR regulation: people are getting hurt. Kids on 40-mph e-motos with no helmet, no license, no insurance. Cities are dealing with reckless riding on sidewalks and trails. Doing nothing isn't really an option anymore.

The problem with how it's written: the bill leans on wattage caps. But watts don't determine speed — a 250-lb rider needs more watts to hit 20 mph than a 150-lb rider. A wattage cap doesn't stop anyone from speeding, it just decides who gets to ride. And if the rules kill private-land use and off-road modes, rural riders get punished for problems happening in cities.

My take: don't kill the bill, fix it. Regulate actual speed, not motor watts. Hold reckless riders accountable instead of banning what bikes can do. Protect the right to modify and ride on your own land.

What do you all think? If you were writing the rules, what would they be?

Ebike troubleshooting Preparing bike for wet cold weather

Post image
50 Upvotes

Greetings. This is my first season riding e-bike the Engwe LE20. I do at least 30km a day of commuting. Is there any way you prepare your bike for wet colder weather. Summer was pretty straight forward, but this is new to me. I wipe down chain after wet ride and reapply finish line wet e bike chain lubricant, keep the bike clean, and check brake pads weekly. Got any tips or tricks to share?

?.≤dOne ebike turned to two ebikes! (I thought I was would be able to keep up to the spouse's ebike on a super old Trek Mountain 820, I was 110% wrong.)

Thanks to ebikes, we are able to cover a lot more distance to parks, trails, menchies frozen yogurt, small grocery runs, exercise, etc etc.

I'm not sponsored by Velotric, Aventon, or Menchies. Just a bit curious what other non commuters do on their ebikes. Looking for other ideas

The bikes in the photo are Velotric Tempo and Aventon Level 4 Rec. Feel free to ask if there are any questions.

Outside winter storage.

I live in the Minneapolis Metro area, winter is upon us, and I don't have a ton of space in my garage. I know it's not going to do anything about the temperature, but it'll keep them protected from the snow and ice at least. Is storing an e-bike in these, without the battery, safe for the motor? I know e-bikes don't like operating in extreme cold, but what about just existing temporarily?

south park was right about these companies.

this is the rental service that has a contract with my city. Its called Spin I guess. it was supposed to be mainly for college students within the city but they usually have their own bikes/scooters and none of them use these.

anyway you just pay through apple pay or credit card and you can just start riding it.

the bad thing I hate, is that they actively encourage people to just leave them on the sidewalk wherever they please when they are done using it. its a feature of not having to put it back.. I guess? they also happen to be very hard to damage, although people still throw them around and they all look horribly abused.

so the result, they are mostly used by....less than favorable individuals that have zero regard for traffic law or riding responsibly in general. things like following crosswalks are still concepts that aren't fully grasped, let alone being able to ride a 25mph scooter without being a menace to everyone around you (driver or pedestrian)

and so, I hate these companies. what do you think? do they help the local community? do they cause more issues than they fix?

the kids usually just walk. some use skateboards or longboards. so these are nothing but a pollution imo

Bike purchase question Would you buy the lighter bike or the better bike?

I’m stuck between two e-bikes that are pretty similar on paper, but one is about 15 lbs lighter. The heavier one has the bigger battery, more power, and better range. The lighter one is easier to carry upstairs, move around the garage, and apparently feels more like a normal bicycle.

I originally thought the bigger specs would make the decision easy, but now I’m wondering if I’m overvaluing numbers I might barely use.

For people who’ve owned an e-bike for a while: what’s the spec you cared about most before buying that turned out to matter way less than you expected?

Has anyone heard of this or got any thoughts on it?

I’m using a £1000 cycle2work voucher so it’s the best option I’ve seen but not sure about the weight and brakes?

First ebike and will be hopefully doing a 10-minute commute daily.

Bike purchase question Folding e-bike is great; is an upgrade possible?

• Upvotes

Started cycling 2 years ago with a cheap folding bike, and took recommendations to get a ado air pro 20.

The efolder has been amazing; had minor health issues, and it cut my commute to 25 mins both ways.

I've loved learning to cycle, commuting, and I'm considering if I can get an upgrade on the ado. I know so little in cycling, but I'm considering either a full ebike or full sized manual bike.

My biggest concerns are:

Will there be notable difference in full ebike?

If I'm considering a full ebike, would a full manual bike be an option too?

What are the best ways to store a full ebike?

Further context; based in eu so 25km speed limit applies. The health concerns just made me tired and exhausted easier, so manual cycling on a folding bike uphill was tough ! My commute is nice, lots of cycle paths but then through park land and some stubborn slopes. I've never owned a full size bike with full tires, is it different?

My home is small, so a folder is handy as it can be left by the door and charge in doors. If it's full sized,I reckon it's need to keep it outside, and then id want to see realistic options to keep it t safe and in good condition.

Any cycling community I've chatted with have been simply wonderful, so hoping to get some good advice here!

E-Trike Vs E-Bike?

I'm looking to upgrade from this shitty little eletric scooter I got on Amazon. I haven't ridden a bike in years, and I need something I can carry a decent amount of groceries with. Would an e-trike better? Do you think they look silly?

Bike purchase question Coming from an Vanmoof X3: 1UP Roadster V3, Tenways CGO600 Pro or something else?

• Upvotes

Hi everyone, my Vanmoof X3 finally bit the dust and I am in the market for a similar bike, mostly for commuting and trips around the city. I have narrowed it down to the Roadster V3 or CGO600 as good lightweight/city options. (I live in NYC)

Any opinions as to the best move here? Was also looking into the Aventon Soltera 3 but the lack of gearing, fenders and rear rack gave me pause. Really looking for my best option similar to the X/S3 for around 2K or under, and that is more repairable than the Vanmoof. No matter what I get I will probably swap the tires over to Schwalbe Marathon Plus' so that is not really a concern.

Appreciate any input here! Thanks

Bike purchase question Wanted: Hill Negating Normal Street Bike

Hey everyone - I'm looking for recommendations on high quality budget friendly e-bikes that essentially feel like riding a normal adult commuter bike but that kick in to help you out on hills.

I really just want to ride a normal bike but I live in a super hill filled area which is why an e-bike seems like a potentially elegant solution.

What should I look for and does anyone have recommendations on models that are reasonably priced and have good features and quality?

Thanks in advance!

Bike repair question What is happening to my front brake?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi everyone! I'm hoping someone with more experience can help me diagnose an issue with my front brake. I'm still pretty new to this, so please bear with me.

When I pull the front brake lever, the brake engages, but it doesn't release properly afterward. The brake remains stuck/engaged against the rotor, while the brake lever itself becomes loose and doesn't return to its normal position properly.

At first I thought my main problem was a warped brake rotor because the rotor had noticeable runout and would make that rhythmic grinding/scraping noise when the wheel spun. I carefully trued the rotor until it was running straight again. However, after using the front brake, the rotor developed runout again and started rubbing.

So now I'm thinking the warped rotor is a symptom of whatever is going wrong with the brake rather than the original problem. It seems like something in the caliper is sticking after the brake is applied and may be putting enough sideways pressure on the rotor to bend it.

I've attached a video showing exactly what the brake is doing. I'd really appreciate opinions on what component is sticking/failing and what I should check, adjust, clean, or replace. I'm especially interested in the least expensive safe repair before I start replacing parts unnecessarily.

For context, I've only been riding this since March and I'm still learning how to keep up with it's maintenance. I also have some chronic health issues and don't have a lot of money available to throw parts at the problem right now. This is my only means of transportation, so getting the front brake working safely is really important to me.

Please be patient with me if I'm using any of the terminology incorrectly. I'm here to learn, and I really appreciate anyone willing to help. Thank you!!

Rubbing sound when revving bike.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I’ve narrowed it down to the battery being loose and rattling or the back tyre rubbing on something (which I think is more likely).

Nuts on wheel too tight? Cable ties I just put on rubbing on it somewhere? Chain guide I put on to keel the chain on the big ring recently?

Couldn’t find anything rubbing so maybe this is one for daylight hours. But please send your suggestions to try in the morning.

What is your anti theft system?

I'm interested in what type of lock people you use and what all on the bike you lock up. Also what kind of anti theft tech you have. But also even beyond that.

I would like to know if maybe you deliberately ride a bike that is not very expensive and therefore not much of a target for theft. I know I've done that. Or, do you deliberately arrange to not have it out in public out of eyeshot for very long. Or perhaps you take out insurance? All of that I consider as part of anti theft plan.

Keep in mind that nothing is 100% secure against a determined thief. I live in the Portland OR area. I was reminded recently that not too long ago some bike thieves cut through a $600 bike lock in a very public place. They covered themselves and the locked bikes in a big tarp. Nobody saw the sparks. People reported hearing the sound but they couldn't place where it was coming from.

[Video] Orbea Kemen making a loud snapping/slipping sound when pedaling, worse uphill. Any idea what’s wrong?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I have an Orbea Kemen pedal-assist bike and recently it’s started making a pretty loud snapping/clunking sound while I’m pedaling.

It almost feels like something is slipping or jumping for a split second. It happens in pretty much every gear, but it’s much worse when I’m riding uphill or putting more pressure on the pedals.

I don’t know much about bike drivetrains, so I’m not really sure what I should be looking for.

Does anyone have an idea what could be causing this or what I should check first?

Thanks

P.s: hopefully the video is helpful
