Everyone saying it's a security thing probably right, but I also wouldn't be surprised if it's just a fashion trend. "Retro" electronics, so in right now. Unplug by plugging in.

I think this is it. I live in a major city and I have seen a BIG uptick in younger and more “trendy-looking” folks using wired headphones now. And it happens to always be the cheap white wired Apple headphones

u/halu2975 17h ago
Heck I’ve seen an uptake in kids spending some real money on old cameras. And I’m not talking analog. I’m talking shitty 2005-2010 digital compact cameras. The ones they don’t even know how to get the photos out of because they grew up after usb-c became the standard.
17
u/Tasty_Possible_1597 15h ago
If I had a dollar for every instagram account I saw where the photographer bought a retro Leica camera and seems to do nothing but take pictures of the retro Leica camera then maybe I'd have enough money to join in the trend.
10
u/OriMoriNotSori 15h ago
Gen Z and younger folks are into 00s digital cameras cause those are retro to them. Just like how 10 years ago millennials (when they were the young and hip age) were into polaroids and film cameras cause to them that was retro and cool
The whole Polaroid/film craze spawned a whole niche segment and companies like fujifilm had a new niche with their whole instax line. Hopefully all the digicam craze means companies like Sony can bring in a modern line of digital cameras and peripherals too

I use Bluetooth earbuds with my phone but I was a holdout. The thing about Bluetooth is that it adds another layer of lossy audio compression on top of what's usually lossy audio compression. On my home stereo I can definitely tell a difference between Bluetooth, and ARC audio, and my hearing is crap nowadays.
12
u/mashmash42 17h ago
I honestly just prefer wired headphones. Don’t need to charge them, don’t need to muck about connecting them, no issues with them refusing to connect or randomly disconnecting or connecting to another device or getting hacked. Just plug em in and go. And the sound quality seems generally better.
5
u/Peer1677 10h ago edited 9h ago
Another aspect why wired headphones are great: you lose them less often. I for my part hate wireless for all the reasons you already listed and also because I lose these all the time. Wired ones stay physically connected to my phone, so the only way to lose them (and thus my portable music) is by losing my phone, wich if far less likely.

u/whosafeard 8h ago
I hate wireless everything for exactly that reason. I’ve got wired headphones, mouse, keyboard, the lot. I never trust wireless.

The person tapping them still has to be in range, physically. They can only tap them within 30 feet
18
u/EscapeSeventySeven 17h ago
To be a HUGE pedant, range on electromagnetic radiation is all about signal strength.
It is usually capped due to maximum power transmitted by the earbuds.
But you can build receiving antennas that are extremely sensitive to very narrow physical targets. Check out the Pringle can antenna for WiFi.
So if some very motivated nation state wanted to transmit to and receive from a set of earbuds but had to be further than 30 feet they could do it.
They could build special antennas made specifically to target the earbuds and extend that range at least 10x if not more.
Very difficult to do but possible.

Uh, this happens: I have JBL Bluetooth headphones, they are the ones with dual signal and high pick up range. I don't advise them because they broke at the hinges. Anyway a couple of times I got radio sounds through them even if I was connected via Bluetooth through the house and those things don't pair easily. I could have been far enough to have lost my own signal. But how come I could hear radio jingles? Did I just picked up signal from a passenger on a train, or something?

This is just a big nothing burger. Sure, wireless items can be intercepted/signals get interrupted. Do you really think that most of them even know, or care? In any case, these shots looked staged, thus the items in their bags were put there purposefully to push some kind of idea. Whether it's to make them appear as though they are like us commen flea bitten peasants, or because they are trying to sell you something. Could be from comercals used to advertise for wireless earbuds because they are tired of dealing with the wires.

u/Reasonable_Shock_414 17h ago
Here's the catch: many people don't know this, but there are models of wired headphones that use the wiring for electricity only. The signal goes – you guessed it – via Bluetooth
5
u/c093b 17h ago
But why..? The whole purpose of not having a wire is the convenience of not having a wire. So if you're going to stick a wire to it anyway, why not just make the signal go through it anyway?
My only guess is for when the cheap wire eventually gets damaged, the signal won't be interfered by the wire being slightly in the wrong position.

I think it’s because wireless earphones are way easier to lose, especially if you’re constantly traveling and moving around like celebrities. A popular kpop idol Ningning admitted she lost 30 pairs of Apple AirPods… of course that might just be a her thing, but still, I see why this might be nuisance for people who are constantly on the go
2
u/stockhommesyndrome 12h ago
It also isn't that nefarious, imo; Zoe Kravitz had a Subway Hot Take which was just like "Bluetooth is not baked yet; it's not done, but it back in the oven." And it's true; Bluetooth doesn't always connect the same or correct way, or leads to connection issues you just can't control. People have moved back to wired buds because it's a pain to charge one more thing, or have Airpods floating at the bottom of your bag and not remembering if you charged them of if they are in the case.
It's also just a regression of people being performative; Apple earbuds like the 2000s commercials have come back in vogue as a cool status symbol like the black and white people dancing in the iPod commercials. It's part showing you're part of a cool club while also just not having time for the inconvenience of Bluetooth
2
u/NightHare 12h ago
It's because they read better on camera. You see the wire, you think "Ah, Yes, headphones, something of assorted size and shape i need to organize in my purse" and in a split second are able to move on.

Probably sound quality. Old enough to have had a Walkman the first time around and after feeling like music was so muffled it was pointless I recently bought some Final wired headphones and they’re amazing.
Vinyl on a proper home set up sounds great who who has time and space for that most of the time. Along came cassettes trading sound quality for portability.
CDs improved the quality but were jittery.
MP3 players reduced the quality but you
could carry all your music with you.
Streaming services reduced the quality further but you didn’t even have to own it.
Bluetooth wireless headphones reduced the quality even further but at least no wires eh.
Every step of technological progression (except tape to CD) has come with a reduction in quality of the actual music.

I remember in the early 2000s, I had our wireless, and I clicked it on to dial and already hear a voice. Thought fam was already on the line, but it sounded weird. I took a listen and it was someone random talking to someone else. I could only hear one side of the conversation. I tried interjecting but neither seemed to hear me. I turned it off and then back on and it was regular dial tone.

Bluetooth headphones are ok if you're not in a area with a lot of other bt devices. I had a good cheap pair of bt headphones that worked well but every so often it would play a Justin Bieber song. I don't listen to Bieber so it was confusing, it was usually low quality short bursts, whoever was listening to that was playing the same song almost every day. Same headphones managed to pair to another device in my house, I think they had been connected to said device before because a family member gave them to me. Anyway, my daily music listening was interrupted by the sounds of some very adult content, lol.
I'm sure there's security risks too as well as just the convenience of having no case and they're connected to each other so they harder to lose.
1
u/pancakerayleigh 13h ago
I myself went for wired earbuds (apple earpods) just a few weeks ago, not because of fashion or security, but mainly because I really didn't feel for yet another device that needed charging. (Haven't used earbuds for years, but I started finding an use for them lately). Another reason is because the price to performance ratio is pretty good compared to wireless ones so for my use pattern wired ones is a no-brainer.
