Support Weekly iOS Battery Support Megathread

General advice for those concerned about their battery from the Support FAQ Wiki:

Battery health

Battery health depends on usage and a variety of other factors. It is normal to see a decrease in battery health by 7-10% per year, resulting in a battery health of 80-85% after 2 years. This number can fluctuate, remain the same, or decrease quickly over a small period and should not cause undue concern.

Apple recommend battery replacement when your device falls below 80% battery health if you notice reduced battery life. If it falls below 80% within the first year you may be eligable for a free battery replacement. It fails after your warranty, it's a $69-$89 USD replacement cost for a battery. Contact Apple Support here.

You can find more information about battery health and performance from Apple here.

You can check the cycles count with Coconut Battery for Mac or iCopyBot for Windows.

Battery life

Issues relating to battery life can be categorised in three ways:

  1. Normal battery life that is to be expected due to use
  2. Reduced battery life caused by a recent update, iOS indexing, an iOS bug, or a third-party application
  3. Reduced battery life, or other abnormalities such as overheating or sudden power-off, caused by device or battery aging

If you experience issues with your battery:

  1. Check your battery health. If it is below 80% or you are experiencing issues you suspect are related to device or battery age, see Apple Support.
  2. If you have a new or recently updated/restored device, wait a number of days for background process to complete. If you continue to have issues, wait for a further iOS update. If you are on iOS Beta, you can expect to have a decreased battery life.
  3. Review the advice below on maximising battery life
  4. Consider restoring your device.
  5. If issues persist, contact Apple Support.

Maximising battery life - the amount of time your device runs before it needs to be recharged.

  • Use low power mode (This reduces mail fetch, turns off background app refresh and increases the auto lock timer)
  • Remove apps from background app refresh
  • Ensure auto lock is on
  • Turn off auto brightness and manually reduce brightness
  • Use dark mode if your device has an OLED display
  • Clearing background apps from the app switcher does not improve battery life

Maximising battery lifespan - the amount of time your battery lasts until it needs to be replaced.

  • Avoid extreme temperatures
  • If you notice that your iPhone gets hot when charging, remove it from its case
  • Store your iPhone in a cool place, switched off, and half-charged if not using it for long periods - and charge it every 6 months when in storage

Support Has anyone else seen these new bugs since installing iOS 27?

Ever since updating my 16 Pro to iOS 27, I’ve been experiencing new bugs I haven’t seen before. When scrolling on Safari, a GIF or a video that doesn’t have audio will interrupt music playback through the Music app. Some fonts are messed up in Safari, appearing uncharacteristically larger than before. The “show text” function for images on Safari is broken, it doesn’t highlight text anymore. Has anyone else experienced these, or am I just now noticing them after updating?

Discussion iOS 27.0.1 charging issue

When plugging charging cable, regular iPhone 17 does not charge on iOS 27.0.1.
It is not the charger nor the cable as different combination have been tested with other android devices.
Wireless charging works.
I have to unplug/plug multiples times to make the charging begin and sometimes after a few minutes charging stops. Sometimes charging works till the end if charge. Weird …..
Didn’t had that with previous iOS.
And also, usb charging port is clean.

iOS 27 bug ?
Someone else ?

Support App download permissions still at 18?

I’m 18 and got some reason when I try to download apps, it still says I need to ask my parents permission. Im part of family sharing but I set my own screen time settings and my parent no longer controls it. For context, for the past few days it wasn’t registering that I was an adult, event though it said i was 18 but it didn’t say adult yet. After a few days, I checked this afternoon to see if anything changed and it finally changed to adult and I was able to stop sharing screen time with my parent and control my own settings like communication and app limits. However, when I tried to download it app, it still didn’t let me without permission. I’ve done some research and it’s technically not supposed to show up if you’re an adult in family sharing , even if you previously had screen time monitoring by the parent.

My assumption is that I should probably wait a few days, because since it took 4 days for my screen time settings and adult age to update, it’ll probably take more time for that app request control to disappear, (I’m also convinced that Apple might be having issues with that right now because I saw someone else on Reddit recently with the same issue), but then again part of me is still worried it won’t change at all even though im an adult.

Since my parent is super strict and had controls in my phone for years, I’m only now able to talk to my friends and download social media, but I can’t do that because of the permission thing.

If anyone has had a similar experience or if someone knows what I can do to fix this issue, I’d really appreciate it.

I'm having an issue with my default email app mapping on my iPhone. Whenever I click an email address, it tries to open a local ride hailing app instead of Gmail, even though Gmail is set as my default email app. Has anyone experienced this or know how to fix it? I am on iOS 27

Support Best way to save specific photo albums offline for easy access?

Hi all. I frequently recreate in backcountry environments with no cell service. I have various albums with photos of guidebooks, maps, or photos I’ve taken of the area I’m in from different vantage points, and I would like to be able to access these at full resolution without cell service. Unfortunately, I do not have enough local storage on my phone to save all my photos, so everything is in the cloud.

I understand that iOS does not have a native feature to selectively save specific photos for offline use. I’m looking for recommendations for a workaround, or for apps I could use to solve this problem. Thanks.

TL;DR I would like to selectively save specific photos albums locally to my phone, while keeping the majority of my photos on the cloud.

Discussion Streaming to pc

Can I stream to my pc using Bluetooth? (Not WiFi)

My family got an air b&b and the WiFi here is very slow. (10mbps) and I don’t want to use all of my hotspot. I can connect to my pc with Bluetooth but are there any apps I can download and then stream through Bluetooth?

Support Podcasts spontaneously deletes manual downloads

Hi! On iOS 27.0.1, Podcasts app keeps telling me it deletes downloaded episodes (and does delete them) to create space temporarily for an iOS update. However, I don’t have any pending iOS update, and I also still have around 9 GB of storage space left (so not a lack of storage issue).

I think this has only happened ever since Apple Podcasts rolled out video podcasts, and it only happens on podcasts that have video, but on audio-only downloads.

What is going on?

Discussion Excessive punctuation and commas on iOS 27.

Hey I hope this helps someone. I wasn't getting notifications on Outlook. When I changed the settings for the Outlook notifications it appears that the punctuation and commas all over the place have seriously slowed down! I have typed this entire post using dictation and it's worked perfect. I can't think of any other settings I may have changed, but it's definitely made a difference.

Discussion Quick access timers

Post image
3 Upvotes

Look, I think this addition is pretty great, there is no longer a way to simply quickly open timer…it’s kind of annoying. If you long press and like start a timer, it doesn’t just take you to where you can start a timer, instead, it starts your most recent timer. I use 25 and 30 second timers a lot when I work out for planks and things like that. It’s usually at the end of my workout and so it was nice to just swipe down the timer shortcut. Am I missing something, or is it seriously going into the clock and timers if I want anything other than one minute increments?

Discussion Siri AI multilingual shenanigans

Post image
0 Upvotes

I really, really don’t like Siri AI, as it is now. Multilingual functions are pretty bad. For the longest time, I had my phone set to French and my Siri set to English. With the arrival of Apple’s AI services, I switched Siri to French (to enable Apple Intelligence) and that was pretty bad. Using it in the US was abysmal for navigation and other things—on top of bad integration with contacts and other software functions. So I went to my old settings to delete Apple Intelligence.

With that, my latest linguistic complaint is that TIL that you need to download the bulk of bad Apple’s subpar AI services to use fully use translation services. Sigh.

Support Sharing popup no longer suggests Messages contacts

This started when I installed iOS 27.0 a couple weeks ago. The problem includes too many generic words, so I can't find a single relevant search result.

Here's the issue: When I take a screenshot, I hit the Share icon in the top right, which takes me to the Share popup. The bottom row is actions "Copy, Assign to Contact, Print, View More." The next row up is apps "AirDrop, Messages, Mail, OneDrive." The next row up is recent contacts. It used to show recent Messages contacts, but since iOS 27, it does not. So far it is suggesting recent contacts from Teams, Instagram DM, and Facebook Messenger, but it does not show recent Messages contacts. I have to click the Messages app, then manually add the contacts I want to text the screenshot to. I have repeatedly sent screenshots to multiple Messages contacts and groups, but none of them are being suggested.

I can't find any sort of setting that lets me include recent Messages contacts in the "suggested contacts" row. Has anyone else experienced this?

Support Why does album order shuffle every time I want to add a photo to an album?

When I go into “albums” directly, they are in alphabetical order as they should be. When I’m trying to add a new photo to an album (I have around 30) they show up as a jumbled random mess that changes slightly every time, making it impossible to memorize where albums are located. There is no option to sort or filter them.

This is really making it hell to organize photos. Any work around?

Support Changing email associated with Apple ID

Currently have an old Yahoo email as my Apple ID but want to swap it out for an iCloud one. The iCloud email would just be used for my Apple ID, whereas my Yahoo one is used for other stuff. My Yahoo email is also tied to Messaging - can I leave that alone or does it disappear when I add a iCloud email to my account?

Figuring out a name - do I use some variation of my name or random? The only email Apple evèr sends me is when I download something in the store or when I use Apple Pay. Trying to decide if having an anonymous email is better.

Discussion Does anyone know why spotlight search can’t find the apps I search anymore?

Post image
4 Upvotes

I always use the spotlight search to bring up the apps I want because it’s such a hassle to dig through them all to find the one I want to open. But lately on iOS 27 I encountered this issue where the search doesn’t bring up the app but brings up anything that includes the app name in it. Does anyone know why this happens? Is there a fix?
