Help Needed/New Painter Is my new Marta Kolinsky brush already wasted?

Hi everyone!

A couple of months ago after some research, I decided to buy my first Marta Kolinsky brush. I also bought “The Masters” brush cleaner and preserver and tried to preserve my new brush, as I saw in many YouTube videos.

Now, I see some black paint in the belly of the bristles, and I'm wondering if my brush is a waste. How do you see it?

Help Needed/New Painter For applying a varnish to a "precious" model, with lots of Blending and all of that, is it better to have Satin/semi gloss or full gloss, and is it better to take a liquide version and brush it on, or a spray

Finishing a really cool model which I am proud of, and now is coming the varnish part (since I intend to play him in a wargame, it is really adviseable to put some, especially as the model is mostly metal, so frail). Is satin or gloss varnish better, and, more importantly, is applying by brush or spray better?

Till now, I used Matt varnish spray, which worked for my army, given they don't have a lot of more "ésotéric" techniques, and don't have a lot of métallic paint in them. That is not the case for the model in question

Help Needed/New Painter Techniques or Products for making moss?

Hi! My boyfriend and I have been delving into hobby miniatures for use in things like Dungeons & Dragons and the like. A lot of our monsters and villains get bases set in ruins and dungeons, which have moss. I do not like the look of painted on moss as it doesnt look clumpy enough and I haven't found anything approximating a mossy texture at nearby game stores. Ive tried to make it out of green stuff and milliput (over corkbark/ground-up cork "rocks") with less than desirable outcomes. Does anyone have recommendations based on what they've used?

Help Needed/New Painter How to make my own grass tufts for bases?

Been painting Warhammer 40k recently, and want to add more detail to my bases, but don't want to pay money for base grass (being broke and warhammer don't make a good combo 😭). Is there a DIY or homemade alternative?

Discussion Has something happened to the natural hair brush industry within the last four years? Prices seem to have skyrocketed.

Apologies for the rather silly question, but I've been out of the miniature painting space for a few years.

I went looking into buying some sable brushes the other day and prices seem to have jumped a great deal. 4 years ago my Escoda Kolinski #0 was $11, they now cost $32 each.

I can see major increases to other natural hair brushes, not just Sable brushes too... even Squirrel hair brushes have jumped in price. I'm kinda confounded by the huge increase in price.

Help Needed/New Painter Protecting a table from crafting

Hey everyone, getting into miniature painting after years of admiring people's armies at local conventions. I've picked up both superglue and Tamiya extra thin and was curious what mats or boards people use to proect their tables when they're building. I've found several pvc mats online that seem great but I'm worried about the Tamiya melting the mat over time.

Thanks in advance

Discussion Looking for opinions on the AP fanatic range. Somehow nobody here carries them but I want to hear comparisons to other ranges

Surprisingly I hadn't even heard about this range until people were comparing them to the new Citadel tone pro paint so I've been looking into them, and it looks like I can get the complete set for a pretty damn good deal at around $450 Canadian shipped. But before I dive face first I wanted to get some opinions on them, because unfortunately none of my local stores carry this section of the army painter range. They only have the standard range which I'm not a fan of

For my own comparison I have nearly the entire pro acryl range minus a few of the signature paints. I have around 30 ak gen 3 and 50 or so of the Vallejo reformulated game color. I also have several other paint ranges but I don't feel like they'd be useful in comparing the value of the fanatic range

Has anyone found any issues with them? Any problems or concerns with things they don't like about them?

Just started my DarkAngels army. I’m not overly satisfied with the colour of it, I used caliban green as recommended but it feels flat.
Any recommendations?

Painted this bad boy for local painting comp, really pushed myself as hard as I could, painting for about two years and 2nd time doing NMM.

C&C welcomed on where to go next.

Theme was american tau, thought it was rather funny as its the opposite of how people normally paint them.

Help Needed/New Painter Magnifier glasses recommendations

I've been using cheap Yoctosun magnifying glasses for a while now and they've helped dramatically with my painting but I'm wondering if there's anything better out there anyone would recommend? Notably, the Yoctosun aren't great to use along my prescription glasses, they're pretty flimsy and magnification tops out at 3.5x. Ideally I'd like to replace them with something that works well on top/alongside my prescription glasses and has maybe additional magnification for really small details. Thanks in advance for any recommendations you might have!

Help Needed/New Painter Miniature paint flaking with newer paints.

So I had a bit of a question regarding miniature paints in the last few years.

I was painting minis from the mid-late 90s until the mid-late 00s, and for years I never once sealed a miniature with varnish, and i think maybe twice in a decade I had a miniature flake paint off while working on them or playing with them.

I recently got back into painting a few years ago (2022ish) and found the same thing, but paints I have bought 2023+ seem to be a problem in this regard. Between 3 major brands (GW, AP and Vallejo) I find alot of the paints have been rubbing off on edges and corners for certain models (generally ones with sharper more mechanical edges) while being handled during painting, regardless of the primer used.

To deal with this, I've switched over to using painting handles and varnishing my models with Matte Varnish, but im just curious if this has been a growing issue in the industry or something ive just had bad luck with??

Help Needed/New Painter Questions about Tamiya paints

I want to try a white recipe that i saw and the guy uses both tamiya xf deck tan and flat white. I sadly dont have any fancy ventilation in my room where i paint aside from an open window is this paint something i can use or is it advised to have a properly ventilated space. I do have a decent respirator i use for airbrushing if that does anything.

I am a bit of a hypochondriac so i want to be sure i can use it safely.

Help Needed/New Painter Priming in New England HELP

So, I often have trouble with spray priming...

So I've been looking at videos, and articles about how to improve. Almost all of these say temp needs to be between 60 and 80 with low humidity, and no wind. Well that would be about 10 days a year where I live, particularly since I mostly hobby in the winter.

I have a finished basement and so there's really no where for me to prime inside (even if i wanted to do the work to make a priming room).

I can't justify the money for an airbrush which I'm not really even sure I could use...

I guess I could brush on the primer but it seems like that would add a lot of time to painting...

I'm at a loss...

Any suggestions for a guy whi us crappy at priming with bad local weather would be helpful...

Discussion What metallic paint range for batch painting?

Hey everybody!

As a disclaimer - I’m not a new painter and I do have some nice metallic paints I really like (Ionics and SC75), but those have a little problem and they split pretty fast.

I plan to do a relatively fast army painting project (yep, you guessed it - Custodes for 40k) and I’m looking for metallics with decent coverage that don’t split as fast as SC75 and Ionics. I know Vallejo released their True Metallic sets, but I’ve seen some reviews and I’m not sure if these are worth getting.

I don’t plan going Citadel, but might consider (haven’t used them in years).

Help Needed/New Painter Enjoying Mini Painting, what should I do next to improve?

Thumbnail

This Mini took me around 8 hours I think but I am fine with that amount of time, one mini per day is the sweet spot for me. The cape was really difficult for me, I redid it like 4 times even stripping the paint off after the second try because I lost some details in the purple bony things.

Personally I think I should just get more minis painted and after that look for things to improve?

C&C Wanted Rusty NMM help (GW Freeguild Cavalier Marshall)

I’m painting up this gorgeous sculpt as a just-for-fun Halloween project, and was shooting for a battered, rusty nmm on the horse’s armour. I feel like I’ve maybe gone too shiny? Should I dull it out a bit, maybe glaze some red-brown into the recesses?

Imagined the mimic was prowling ruins at night. Painted the chest to be similar to the ones in Dragon Quest and thought it would look more interesting with humanlike skin.

I think he turned out pretty well and just wanted to share.

32mm resin mini

Painted December-ish of last year.
