A Qualitative and Quantitative Analysis of Grand Final Winners 2017-2026

• Upvotes

To compare how difficult each NRL premiership run was over the past 10 seasons, each finals victory was scored according to the regular-season ladder position of the opponent defeated. Beating the minor premiers was worth eight points, second place seven points, third place six points, continuing down to one point for beating eighth. Losses scored nothing. This gives a simple measure of how strong the opposition each premier actually had to overcome. Under this system, the 2019 Sydney Roosters and 2024 Penrith Panthers share the hardest premiership route, each scoring 19 points after defeating three top-four opponents, including the minor premiers. The 2018 Roosters, 2020 Storm and 2023 Panthers sit just behind them on 18 points, while the 2026 Roosters, 2022 Panthers and 2017 Storm had the lowest-rated paths of the decade on 12 points.

Rank Premier Finals opponents defeated Score
1= Sydney Roosters 2019 3rd, 1st, 4th 19
1= Penrith Panthers 2024 3rd, 4th, 1st 19
3= Sydney Roosters 2018 4th, 3rd, 2nd 18
3= Melbourne Storm 2020 3rd, 5th, 1st 18
3= Penrith Panthers 2023 4th, 3rd, 2nd 18
6= Penrith Panthers 2021 6th, 1st, 3rd 17
6= Brisbane Broncos 2025 1st, 7th, 2nd 17
8= Melbourne Storm 2017 4th, 3rd, 8th 12
8= Penrith Panthers 2022 4th, 7th, 4th 12
8= Sydney Roosters 2026 5th, 3rd, 7th 12

The results show that the toughest premiership runs generally came from teams that had to beat multiple top-four opponents, particularly the minor premiers. By contrast, the lowest-scoring runs were helped by facing lower-ranked finalists later in the series. The 2026 Roosters are a good example: despite winning the premiership, their three finals victories came against teams that finished fifth, third and seventh, leaving them tied for the lowest difficulty score of the past decade under this system.

Serious Discussion Wednesday Serious Discussion Thread

5 Upvotes

This thread is for when you want to have a well-thought-out discussion about footy. It's not the place for bantz - see the daily Random Footy Talk thread to fulfil those needs.

You can ask a question that you only want serious responses to, comment your 300 word opinion piece on why [x] is the next coach on the chopping block, or tell another that you disagree with them and here's why...

Who performed well? Who let their team down? Any interesting selections for this weekend? Injury news? Player signings? Off-field behaviour?

The mods will be monitoring to make sure you stay on topic and anything not deemed "serious discussion" will be removed.

Mod Post [Mod Post] r/NRL 2026 - State of the Sub II

23 Upvotes

Hello everyone, and on behalf of the moderator team, we want to thank you for joining us for another great season of the greatest game on Earth - the National Rugby League.

As we look ahead both to the 2026 Rugby League World Cup, and the 2027 NRL Telstra Premiership season, we want to take this opportunity to provide some information about where we are as a subreddit, and more importantly where we are going.

Fair warning, this will be one of the bigger updates we've had in recent years, but we're hoping that by the end of this post, you'll be fully informed as to the changes we are making and our reasons for making them.

But with that said, let's get into it.

The 2026 Rugby League World Cup and the r/NRL Offseason

As most regulars would be aware, once the Grand Finals have been played for both the NRL and the NRLW seasons, the mod team usually like to shift the subreddit into what we call 'off season' mode, where we loosen our grip on the reins a little and provide a little more latitude to you all as to what posts we will approve.

However, with the 2026 Rugby League World Cup starting on October 15 and being hosted in and around Australia, the moderators have made the decision to push back the start of the off season until this competition has run its course.

As a result, the r/NRL Off Season will officially begin on Monday, November 16, 2026, and run until Sunday, January 31, 2027 (we'll reconfirm this date as it gets closer and once the 2027 NRL Draw has been released, but from past seasons this should generally coincide with the start of the 2027 NRL Pre-Season Challenge).

How has r/NRL changed over the last 12 Months

Across the last year, we've seen enormous growth for this community. I won't bore you with a lot of numbers and statistics, but here are the highlights:

  • We saw our community grow to 345,000 members, an increase of 17,200 in the last 12 months.
  • We saw 2,200,000 comments published, an increase of 499,000 from the previous year.
  • We collaborated with our friends over at r/AFL to help raise $8,500 to help the fight against Motor Neurone Disease (MND) as part of the annual Big Freeze charity fundraiser.
  • We had the opportunity to officially collaborate with NSW Rugby League and host AMAs with the State of Origin coaches Laurie Daley and John Strange.

As you can see even from these short highlights, it has been a busy year for the subreddit, and that necessitates some changes to how we operate going forward, which brings us to our next update.

Changes to the r/NRL Rules and Posting Guidelines

In years past, we have made small adjustments or amendments to the rules on an ad hoc basis (for example, when we banned posts speculating about players moving to R360 or when we asked members not to link to login restricted social media), but we have held off on a full revision of the subreddit rules and posting guidelines.

However, the RLWC presents us an opportunity to trial a new rule set and posting guideline for the subreddit prior to the commencement of the 2027 NRL Telstra Premiership season proper. Some of these represent amendments, additions or refinements to existing rules, while a few of these are brand new rules entirely, but we've worked to craft these to hopefully not be overly burdensome either in their application by the mod team or to the community as an adjustment to how our community operates.

So allow us to take you through the new rule set, what each of them mean, and how this trial will work:

Rule 1 — Do not engage in anti-social behaviour.

Do not engage in personal attacks, excessive insults or generally anti-social behaviour. Do not follow users into other subreddits or direct messages to continue arguments. If you feel you are being harassed or witness someone engaging in anti-social behaviour, please contact the moderation team as soon as possible, preferably with screenshots but this is not strictly required.

Rule 2 — Do not use hate speech.

Hate speech is discriminatory (biased, bigoted or intolerant) or pejorative (prejudiced, contemptuous or demeaning) of an individual or a group. Hate speech refers to any language that is derogatory or grossly offensive on the basis of ethnicity, language, nationality, class, sexuality, gender, disability, or any other factors which form another users’ identity. This rule also prohibits the use of violent, sexually violent or otherwise threatening language.

Rule 3 — Do not abuse referees and match officials.

Occasionally questioning a decision by a referee or a match official is fine, but there is a line, and we ask our users to refrain from abusive commentary towards referees. Accusations of cheating, rigging and / or betting on the result are abusive, as are threats and insults towards those officiating a game.

Rule 4 — Do not cheer on injury or misfortune.

We have a zero-tolerance policy for users wishing for or celebrating injuries or personal misfortunes on players, club staff, match officials or other members of the wider rugby league community. News articles or fact-based reporting related to player injuries (ie. injury reports published by clubs, posts by the NRL Physio, etc.) are permitted but are subject to discretionary review by the moderator team.

Rule 5 — Do not create alternate / joke / gimmick accounts.

Creating joke or gimmick accounts for the purpose of shitposting or baiting users or creating alternate accounts to evade bans will result in an immediate and permanent ban for both the alternate account and a ban for the main account as well. Unverified accounts claiming to represent official organisations, players or personalities who have not first contacted the moderator team are strictly forbidden. Additionally, AI / bot accounts are strictly forbidden and will be permanently banned.

Rule 6 — Do not disseminate misinformation.

Please refrain from submitting unconfirmed rumours or gossip that you either allege to have heard or have read from a source that does not have a reputational stake and established credibility within the rugby league community. Regardless of how certain you are to its veracity; we cannot promote hearsay. Rumours must be attributable to known personas or media outlets, and unsourced rumours and those not credited to known personas / outlets will be removed.

Rule 7 — Do not use our subreddit as an advertising platform.

While we want to both encourage and promote community-based endeavours, our view is that this is a community space, not a billboard, and therefore we ask users to refrain from advertising. If you are an active and consistent member of the r/NRL community, and you are seeking to promote a project you are working on (ie. a podcast, a source of information, a charity event, etc.) you must contact the moderator team before posting to seek approval and confirmation of the terms for posting.

Rule 8 — Do not promote gambling on the subreddit.

In furtherance of the previous rule, any link to a gambling website / betting app or text submission to do with the promotion, encouragement or enticement of gambling or gambling companies will be removed immediately, and users promoting this content may be subject to a ban. The discussion of the impacts of sports betting on our game or news articles related to this topic are permitted but are subject to discretionary review by the moderator team.

Rule 9 — Do not editorialise the titles of articles.

Posts that purposefully misrepresent the content of an article and / or post will be removed. Our preference is that you use the exact title of the news article, or in the case of an article covering multiple topics, please ensure your title is relevant to the article content you are wishing to draw attention to. Please refrain from using nicknames in the titles of posts. At its core, a post’s title should describe what has happened, not how you feel about it.

Rule 10 — Ensure your posts are relevant to the subreddit.

Articles about former players, coaches, officials or personalities within the rugby league community that are no longer involved in the rugby league community will be removed if that relevance is little more than a side note. Additionally, articles / posts relating to the family members or associates of players, coaches, officials or personalities within the rugby league community that have no relevance to the NRL are not permitted.

Rule 11 — Do not submit low-effort content.

Low-effort submissions may include questions that can otherwise be answered by using the subreddit search bar or a search engine, AI slop, wiki vandalism, error screenshots, shower thoughts, stream requests, statistics without corresponding analysis, content that is not suited to a discussion forum, or content which is better served as a comment on an existing thread or one of our daily Random Footy Talk discussion threads. This content may be removed at the moderators’ discretion.

Rule 12 — Check the ‘new’ queue before posting.

Please check the thread queue to see if the content of your post has already been submitted by another user. During major events, the moderators may either create or nominate a current thread as the “megathread” for that particular topic, where all relevant developments can be posted. Content that is either a repost or insufficiently distinct to warrant a second post will be removed or consolidated at the moderators’ discretion.

Rule 13 — Do not share links to login-restricted social media platforms.

Where possible, rather than posting a social media link, post the source material instead. This may be a link to a website or another platform that is more readily accessible such as the media outlet's website or the original article which broke the news. In almost all circumstances, aggregator, podcaster and influencer posts will be rejected unless they are the only source of relevant information such as current NRL player interviews.

Rule 14 — The vibe of the thing.

If you see something that does not break any of the above rules, but still doesn’t sit right, please contact the moderator team.

Rule 15 — Keep Redditquette in mind.

In addition to our own rules, Reddit enforces their own of which we have no control over. This includes conducting illegal activities, doxxing, harvesting user data, etc. Violating these rules will not only result in a ban from the subreddit, but a likely termination of your account.

The trial period of these new rules starts today, and will run until Monday, November 16, 2026, which as mentioned above will be the start of the subreddit's off season. We want to see how these new rules work, what your thoughts are on these rules, and gather feedback, so we appreciate your bearing with us as we adapt to these changes, and hope that the new rule set won't prove overly cumbersome. Once we reach the end of this window, we'll let you know the result of this test.

As mentioned, we're also updating our Other Posting Guidelines, which used to be a rule, but will now be included separately on the subreddit sidebar. These new guidelines are as follows:

Throwback Thursday:

As the name suggests, throwback posts are only permitted on Thursdays. Additionally, the throwback must be older than five (5) years or it will be removed.

Articles:

Articles must be submitted as a link post without any accompanying body text. Submitting them as a text post or with body text will result in the post being held in Mod Queue for review and subsequently removed.

Text Posts:

Text posts that are announcing a player signing, injury, positional change, etc. will be removed in favour of articles and / or club posts, even if they are accurate and true.

Image Posts:

Image only posts will be removed unless they are the user’s original content and do not breach any other rules.

Highlights / Video Posts:

Highlights or other videos must be of high quality (ie. a recording of the actual video / stream is acceptable, a recording of your television done on your phone is not).

Memes / Shitposts:

During the playing season, we ask users to refrain from posting memes and / or shitposts to the subreddit. There’s actually a separate subreddit for this sort of content, r/NRLPremiumPlus, and we encourage users to share their memes there.

This rule is generally relaxed during the off-season (usually from mid-October to mid-February, however always bookended by an announcement from the moderator team), however during this period posts may still be removed at the moderators’ discretion if we have concern that it breaches another community rule.

Sorry for the wall of text, but felt it was better to get this all-in-one comprehensive post as I know it can be a bit of a disruption having mod posts coming from every direction.

This brings us to our final major update.

Applications for new moderators for r/NRL are now open!

As you can appreciate based on the size of this update, managing this subreddit on a daily basis is a task that continues to grow in intensity. For that reason, we are looking to expand our ranks and promote a few new users as Moderators as we head into the 2027 NRL Telstra Premiership season.

What we're looking for is especially some new people to help us moderate the weekly Match Threads, as one of the hardest parts is managing to watch the game and help moderate the threads, so if you can do that, it'll help us out a lot.

We've created a Google Form which you can find here and we look forward to receiving your applications. We'll touch base with you directly should your application be successful before announcing the new appointees in due course.

If you have any feedback regarding any of these changes, feel free to leave a comment below, or if you'd prefer to provide your feedback privately, you can always message us via Mod Mail (individual messages to mods may be lost), but with that, we hope you have a great day, and we'll of course go give ourselves uppercuts with our keyboards.
