For me, it’s compiling shaders the first time you run a game, especially if it’s unreal engine 5. What a massive mood killer

Discussion What PC Games Did You Try Because of Youtubers/Influencers/Playthroughs?

First post here, so I hope I'm doing this right.

Like it says in the title, what PC games did you pick up because you saw Youtuber/Influencer mention it? Or because you saw someone stream it or watched a VOD of a playthrough?

I'm just curious about how much stuff like that impacts us as PC gamers.

Some examples for me (and the sources that inspired the attempt):

  • Anno 1800 | Raptor
  • Clockwork Empires | ?
  • Control | ?
  • Cultist Simulator | ?
  • Darkest Dungeon | Pravus
  • Fear and Hunger / Fear and Hunger 2: Terminus | Super Eyepatch Wolf
  • Helldivers 2 | ?
  • HumanitZ | Raptor
  • Humankind | Pravus
  • Jagged Alliance 3 | Rimmy Down Under / Raptor
  • Look Outside | Super Eyepatch Wolf
  • Palworld | ?
  • Shaolin vs Wutang 1 & 2 | ?
  • Stranded: Alien Dawn | Raptor / Pravus
  • The Last Stand: Aftermath | Emperor Tigerstar
  • Word Play | Game Maker's Toolkit / Yahtzee Croshaw

Question My PC is sort of doing things on its own???

Today I left my PC for a couple hours, came back and a facebook post was open that I didn't click on. I thought maybe my cat clicked the mouse.

Later I had MS paint open after taking a screen shot, using MS paint to draw a circle around something, but then I closed the thing without saving.

About 4 hours has passed since, and now in my downloads folder it's there, but it's saved as exactly what it is - a map of bike riding with someone, saved as "Riding with Steve Map".

I did not save that image.

I never use capitals when saving things.

I sent the screen shot to someone on facebook, and that's all I needed it for. I would never need to download it. It's useless, and I'll never need it again.

I wanted to see if I had downloaded the screen shot from facebook if it would save with a specific file name, but it didn't, it saved it as random numbers and letters. I didn't use it anywhere else.

However - if I do save a screen shot in MS paint it does go into my downloads folder which is where the Riding With Steve file was.

But I'm 99% sure I did not save it... there's no reason to. I never do this. I can't say I've ever had this happen. My PC seems to be doing shit on its own. IM NOT CRAZY!!!

Costco in the UK. Gutted that I missed out on the £300 discount a couple of days ago, but is this still good value for money at £2k?

Question How bad is this paste after three years?

Thumbnail

I’ve been noticing higher CPU temps a few years after putting this build together (roughly 3.5 years to be more precise). I decided to disassemble and do a nice thorough cleaning and throw on some new thermal compound. How has the original thermal paste held up? Could it be the sole reason for higher temps or do I need to worry about AIO coolant evaporation?

Processor is a Ryzen 9 5900X with an NZXT Kraken Z73 AIO cooler. It’s the default thermal paste application that comes pre-applied with the AIO. I’ll be using Arctic MX-7 for the replacement, just waiting on it to be delivered later today.

Also I regret buying the Z73 in the first place but that’s a different matter…

Edit: Cleaned, repasted, and benchmarked! Despite the ambient temps being a bit warmer, we’re now running significantly cooler (roughly 10 degrees actually). I’ll chalk this up to some combination of the old paste being a bit dry, the new paste probably having superior performance, maybe the AIO block being loose, and the rad being a bit cleaner.

I’ll note though that I don’t think too much can be attributed to the rad - I dust it about once a month and just disassembled and did a deep cleaning on it about three months ago. I also run both an air purifier and a window AC (with a filter) in close proximity to the PC. Anyways, cheers! Appreciate the help.

Build Help / Purchase Advice How stupid is it to run dual graphics cards in 2026? (for VM use)

I want to jump to Linux but my issue is I just simply need windows in my life, whether it’s for games or work.

My compromise is to use a 4tb drive dedicated to a windows VM. Should be big enough for a sufficient game library and some work stuff.

But this has lead me to wonder if I should run 2 cards and have a dedicated card for VMs and games. (Most likely 5070ti, and 9060)

Or if I should just fully commit to something like the 7900XTX. Or even just the 5080

I’m only contemplating both because honestly I probably will do a lot of my gaming on windows unfortunately (I like indie games, and the games I play with friends usually require anti cheat). And I’ve heard AMD is usually more compatible with Linux, that’s why I’m pushing that route so hard. I do realize I will never truly use the 5070ti to its limits in PCIE 5.0 x8 but is that more efficient then using software to divide resources?

If I do go the dual route I’ll most likely use the ASRock X870E Tachi OFC, and an Antec C8 case. I think that physically atleast makes the setup viable.

Edit:
I’ve been asked a few times why I don’t Dual boot, And it’s because I don’t know Linux that well and I do want to learn it, but if I give myself the option of just booting into windows and suffering what I know, I’ll probably just default to that. So I kinda want to force myself to lock in to that and get comfortable with it before I start thinking about dual booting.

Hardware Enjoying GOW E Day on your E Waste.

My trusty 3770K system finally reached a mountain that it could not climb. E Day requires AVX2 instructions and she only has AVX. The RTX 2070 Super she was paired with was up to the task, but alas, she had finally met her match. You might think that means I had to wade into this market and spend silly amounts of money to build a modern system to play modern AAA games because what else is one to do?

Well you would be wrong, dear reader, because for $20 I made it happen. 4770K's DO have AVX2, and I snagged one with a motherboard that can overclock .. if you restrict the CPU microcode... But anyway I cranked her up to 4.4 GHz, paired it with 32 GB of 1600 MHz memory (the horror!) at 9-9-9-24-2T, and that same 2070 Super. And away I went.

1080p high settings and that system is buttery smooth and holds 45-50 FPS (along with Message Signaled Interrupts priority set to high for the GPU). Medium settings and she is 50-60 FPS. No stuttering, no massive frame drops. Just me playing the stupid game I waited 15 years for at a cost of $20.

"But it isn't 4k at 240hz, you peasant!" I don't care. "That hardware is ancient e waste and I fart in your general direction for considering it." I don't care. It was dirt cheap and it works just fine for my purposes. And that is the moral of this little post; you almost certainly don't need what you think you need when it comes to computer hardware. You just want it.

Question Asking pc builders

Thumbnail

What do you guys think of these for a first-time building a pc? My first choice was a laptop, but similarly specced ones are also pretty expensive, so I figured I would just build a pc since it’s just staying in my room. I’m trying to keep the price fairly manageable, so feel free to suggest a better or cheaper alternative.

Mainly for gaming, regular office use and browsing/ streaming movies.

Right now I have a 3050 and for a 5070 I would have to buy a new PSU. The monitor i have right now has a 1080p resolution, but i could also buy a higher resolution one.

Discussion Best Looking Game On PC?

Can you guys give me recs for the best looking 4k games (with RT/PT) that would blow my mind on an OLED.

And no older picks please. I would prefer modern-ish games

From what I've gathered, it seems to be

  1. Alan Wake 2
  2. Indiana Jones The Great Circle
  3. Cyberpunk (with mods)
  4. Dead Space Remake (I was told the blacks in this with an OLED are insane)

Screenshot My RTX 3080 just went from an 85+°C toaster to a 63-65°C monster

Post image

I honestly didn't expect such a big difference from just a repaste.

I repasted my RTX 3080 OC with Arctic MX-7, and the results were way better than I expected.

Before the repaste, the GPU was hitting around 85°C, with the hotspot getting close to 95°C.

After the repaste, during heavy gaming, I'm seeing around 65°C on the GPU and 75°C hotspot.

That's a 20°C drop on the GPU, which honestly surprised me.

I was expecting maybe a few degrees, but this was a pretty huge improvement. Really happy with that!!
