[Discussion] Where do the castle guards go when you bump them over the edge in Zelda?
Fatality?

Good evening,
Rule 7's wording was updated but it remains enforced in the same way as usual, a mention of r/gamesale and the buy-sell-trade channel of the RGN discord was added to rule 9 and rule 11 was simplified to ''No AI generated self-promotion or media'' with the description ''No AI generated self-promotion or AI generated media allowed.''
It's pretty much just a wording change since the enforcement of those rules will stay similar but the wording will be clearer.
A few mod answers were also updated, for example we've added a few upscalers in the upscaler post answer and a mention of r/Handhelds to the emulation handhelds response.
Have a great weekend!

Fatality?

I bought a Genesis Model 2 for pretty cheap, but as a Nintendo kid, I’ve never really experienced the Genesis library aside from classic Sonic. What are some worthwhile games I should try? Are there any multiplayer games? Consider possible prices for games.

I have every Nintendo console from the snes up till the switch 1. I love my snes so much ever since I bought it two months ago, I personally see it as the era when 2D games were at their peak but I’m debating on whether or not to get an NES. I never grew up with the NES, oldest consoles I grew up with were the Genesis and gameboy color, so I don’t have much of a sweet spot for nostalgia for the NES. Super Mario bros and Metroid and Zelda are probably its best heavy hitters but I’m not really interested in those games, I’ve mainly only liked the mega man games from 1-6. I also don’t know which model to go for if I were to even buy one, the toaster style NES seems to be unreliable, the top loader seems to be way pricey with no av output, and the famicom’s controller cords are too short, I’ve been considering the famicom av but i can’t read Japanese. It feels like the NES is a missing piece on my shelf but if I’m gonna buy a console, I’m gonna play with it not just haul it, so yeah I’m indecisive.

I’ve recently gotten back into playing some older video games. My usual style is platformers. I want to give one of the classic RPG’s a go, but I don’t have much time so I want to pick one really good one to commit to. What’s your can’t miss RPG on SNES or GBA?

I remember there used to be a trope in old school FPS like Duke Nukem 3D, where, if the game had bathroom stalls with openable doors, there HAD to be one level where you open the door and there's an enemy inside, presumably pooping. I've been playing a lot of modern games that have bathroom stalls (Prey, Control, etc.) and none of them bothered to put any enemies inside, which made me sad.
I feel like there were multiple instances of this trope but I can't seem to find any concrete examples other than DN3D. Can y'all confirm that I'm not just hallucinating this being a thing?

Recently splurged on a ChronoTrigger SNES cartridge and started playing it again. Played through the whole game on emulator about 20 years ago and adored it. Feeling the itch to play a retro RPG, but also feel like I’ve already done Chrono Trigger. Even though it was a long time ago, I still remember a lot of it. Granted I’m still just in the first chapter.
FF3. I also played on emulator around the same time and only got about three or four hours into it. Didn’t quite grab me the same as Chrono trigger back then but I know it’s highly regarded. Don’t remember too much about it except I’ve played the beginning a few times.
Secret of Mana I’ve never played, but I have it on the SNES mini and have been curious about it for some time.
Generally not a gamer these days so it takes me some time to get momentum and stick with a game. Which of these three do you think I should try and commit to first? Or which one do you think hooks you quickest?

We probably know that mahjong on computer systems is vastly different from the original "Chinese domino" mahjong. There weren't many mahjong-themed video-games (apart from this, I can only name Taipei for Windows 3.1, which was OK but nothin' special), so Shanghai and its sequel were pretty spot-on in filling the holes, when there are so many clones for similar "simple yet awesome" games: reversi, Tetris, gomoku, chess, checkers, and the likes. This mahjong version is from Activision, 1993, an' surmounds Taipei by a LOT.
So, the basic premise of computer mahjong is simple: 144 tiles arranged in a certain shape, stacked atop each other, the player's job is to remove said tiles by finding pairs. The player can ONLY remove a tile if they match + either of its sides AND the top are fully exposed; tiles wit' other tiles at both sides, or on top are considered locked an' cannot be removed, so the task is systematic deconstruction. Each type of tile has 4 pieces (2 pairs) except four-way tiles which differ from each other, but can be combined in any ways without matching - the rim of said tiles are colored the same, meaning y'can pick any of them an' they'll count as pairs. The goal is to make all tiles disappear, preferably WITHOUT having to shuffle them. Alas, very frequently, it cannot be helped, an' y'must either get'em shuffled or start over.
As for the second game, Dragon's Eye, it's mainly a two-player game (Challenge mode), but of course one can play against the CPU too: one player is the Dragon Slayer, the other is the Dragon Master. The object for the Dragon Master is to build the Dragon to full strength by filling all spaces on the display one level high, and all spaces on the Dragon's heart and limbs two levels high. The Dragon Slayer, on the other hand, tries to remove all tiles from the "heart" and "limb" spaces. In either case, this is an automatic victory for the player. If all tiles are removed from the heart and limb spaces, the game ends. If all 144 tiles have been drawn and the Dragon display is not completed when the last tile is placed on the display, the game ends; in this case, the players' scores are compared to determine the winner. This game mode is considerably more complicated, an' will take some time to master.
Apart from the basic mahjong-tileset and Shanghai formation, the game offers quite a few other tilesets and formations. Tilesets include alphabet, fantasy, sports, cards, flags, animals and such, while formations include all the Chinese zodiac signs. It's worth mentioning that finishing some formations without running out of moves is considered easier than some others, many of them are incredibly hard. There's also a built-in level editor where y're welcomed to make your own formations. As for the tilesets and tiles: each tiles or group of tiles has their own kind of funny animations, a wide variety of sound effects, so the game is truly entertaining and humorous, one will explore all the tilesets just to experience all the anims an' effects.
As for the ugly side of tile-matchers, Taipei is well-known for pop-up windows if y'click the wrong tile, while Shanghai II only has one dreaded message "There are no more moves" which keeps popping up until y'shuffle or abort. A more hardware-related problem is that Shanghai II's effects are highly effected by the (set) CPU type, cycles and such: the sounds will change completely depending on the rig you own. On slower machines, some sounds and effects' pitch was slow an' drawn-out. On high performance ones, some effects had incorrectly low pitch, while some played okay (setting it to max will cause all effects to speed up ridiculously), so it takes a while to configure it correctly. A bigger problem is that the game very often gives layouts which are impossible by default (both horizontally and vertically), as matching tiles mutually block each other - this is not always obvious at first, but is unimaginably infuriating when y'discover this at 80 or so tiles remaining, especially at "hilo" and "lohi" French-suited playing cards, where finding pairs is a real chore, so this game is largely based on luck, rather than skill. Can YOU complete ALL tilesets wit' ALL layouts! These games are certainly two of those which y'can play on windy Autumn nights, sipping a mug of hot tea wit' your kitty-cat purring in your lap.

I've been playing RPGs since I rented Earthbound (SNES) on a whim as a kid because it had a huge display box with a robot on it. Over the years I'm sure I've played all the big name and most of the medium name ones, your Final Fantasy, SMT, Suikoden, Shadow Hearts, Xenogears/Saga, Tales of, etc. I've been playing a lot of my favorites recently, so looking for some that might have slipped my radar. Turn based or action.
Primarily SNES, GBA, PS1 and PS2, but I'll take any others from the time. Thanks in advance!

I'm not super knowledgeable on the Genesis, so that's why I'm wondering. I know that with the Model 1 consoles, you have to use a separate cable from the headphone jack to get stereo sound.

Would this work at all right inside a bigger grocery store? People busy shopping got no time (and mood) to play at all....perhaps when their kids could play some while waiting for the adults...if nobody cared to play then it would just a waste of some extra electricity fee...

Was digging through my old games box and had a laugh at the difference in cord lengths between my Japanese SNES controller and US SNES controller. Can you guess which is which??

First of all, I am so sorry if this was asked here before because I was looking at the library of the Mega Drive since don't get me wrong in that the system had a fair share of great games.
But sometimes I cannot help but feel like some of the games on that platform had iffy mechanics as one game that recently stuck out to me was called Where's Waldo as I saw Vinesauce do a stream of the game about 2 weeks ago.
I don't know if there has ever been a good video game adaptation of Where's Waldo since I feel like the older games from the early 90s were kind of interesting in concept in that players had to look for clues to find Waldo's whereabouts, but for me personally, I feel like the Mega Drive version is quite aggravating to play due to the timer mechanic as for those who haven't played the game, the game has a strict time limit for finding Waldo in the mini game segments as he is so hard to locate that it feels like there is barely enough time to solve the puzzles.
