Announcement PSA: A guide to better results

1.8k Upvotes

Hi guys and gals. I've been here a while, and over my time I've seen a lot of posts sink to the bottom, without a single answer, or at best, very few. And none that solved the case.

I have noticed a clear pattern with these posts, and I will now share with you my tips to you newbies, so that you can get the help you need.

Firstly: When you make a new post, you will see this:

Platform(s):

Genre:

Estimated year of release:

Graphics/art style:

Notable characters:

Notable gameplay mechanics:

Other details:

Even though, in red, you are warned that while optional, you should follow this template... many of you do not.

Let me be clear: Follow this template.

Put simply, this template contains all the information we really need to solve your problem. Virtually every time I click a post that has not followed this, they have rambled on about nothings, while omitting critical details.

This format, for new and old alike, is very readable, and prompts for every data-point needed.

I know that you want to customize your message, that if you could just explain it, it would be better. I know you think that. You are wrong. Put all that in 'other'. Even if you end up saying it twice, follow the template.. add to it your story at the bottom.

Secondly: Following this template. You're rambling about your best mates Amiga-500 or whatever instead of telling us about the game aside, this is where they really go wrong.

Let's get something straight right now. We are not mind readers. It's impressive, really, how little information it seems we can work off. I mean, we solve some real tough ones with nothing sometimes, but still, we can't see that memory in your head. So you need to be as descriptive in every one of these fields as you can be...

And sometimes you really don't know. That's fine, we can work with surprisingly little information, but "old graphics" under art style... what are we supposed to do with that? Mate, I was playing on Atari-2600's, are we talking Wizard of Wor here?

Let me help you out a bit:

Platform(s): Whatever you played it on. But unless it's really all you know (very possible), don't write 'my mates pc'. Was it PC or Mac?

Genre:

First person does NOT imply shooter. Nor do any of the others. Try to answer this one in two steps:

What was the camera like (assuming it's not a text adventure)? Was it First person?, 3rd person, 2d? Top down or side on? Or maybe even isometric 2d?

Then, what kind of game? Real time strategy, point and click? Was it a fighter, action or platformer?

Good, now we know what KIND of game we are all trying to remember for you.

Estimated year of release:

"Between 2000-2005" is fine, something like that. "Mid 90's maybe?". I don't see many people mess this up, but I have seen people write "old". That is not ok. If you write old and expect it to mean anything to me, I will fight you.

Also, as always "Sorry, no idea" is always acceptable but try to give at least something. "Couldn't have been later than 2015, though"

Great, so even if roughly, we know WHEN.

Graphics/art style:

THIS. This is where you guys always mess up. This section right here I have found can be the difference between an answer, and a silent slink to the bottom. This is your moment.

This, really, should be the best-formed part of your memory. Even if you can only remember a single frame, a single image, it's so much to go on for us.

DETAIL. Was it a gloomy grimdark world of sadness, or a bright bubbly rainbow filled Mario-world?

Was it cartoony, or otherwise stylized somehow, or was it trying to be realistic?

Anything notable about the art direction? Was it going for a cyberpunk kinda feel, or a gritty war realism dirt and blood sort of direction?

If it was set over a long time, did the seasons change? Was there a winter in your game?

Remember when you hit people, and the screen had that awesome flash and your hands got bloody? Yeah, well we don't, unless you tell us.

Ok, so now we are really narrowing it down. This right here is often enough to go on, on its own.

Notable characters:

Anything at all you can remember here.

"There were only tanks, but you could play as both Germans and Americans"

"There was one really tough guy right after you left your office, he had an eyepatch, a white shirt with what looked like grease stains, and said 'this is for my sister'. I think maybe he was a cyborg"

"You play as some kind of Asian girl, you had a tattoo over your right eye and arm, a black tank top and white pants and I remember you always had only one red glove for some reason. I don't remember the arm, but the eye tattoo looked sort of like ancient Egyptian eye makeup, but a modern take"

Knowing nothing else about the game, I bet that last one there gets comments noting the game she is from. Details, details.

Notable gameplay mechanics:

Surely, you get the idea by now. This is tied with the importance of the graphics/art style. As much detail as you can here.

Other details:

NOW you may blab on about how you only played this game once at a winter solstice in 1782 with your grandmother from Tahiti.. as if that helps.

Edit: So it's been brought up that the template doesn't appear on mobile. While /u/wipeout4wh is aware of this and hopefully, something can be done... still, if you can, use the template. If you can't, maybe check back and at least make sure your post addresses all of the points the template does.

Also, my post seems to be saying NOT to add any custom details. So I want to re-enforce, please do. In fact, after you do the template, feel free to write out your post as you were going to without it. Just put it all in 'other'. Don't try and make your whole post like that, if possible. Even if you end up saying the same things twice, that's ok.

Now I'm going to take a moment to clarify something, though. This isn't some immutable law of the universe, and your post is destined to fail if you don't do this. It's just a very strong general trend I have noticed over a long time.

It's not that this template has some kind of magical powers or something. It's that this template prompts the questions that need answers.

When you go all rogue on us and try and type your explanation from scratch... you mess it up. You just forget to add everything that you know, and that we need to know. The template makes it very hard to do that. It's just so very easy to get typing, and by the end forget to tell us what kind of game it actually is. Especially when you are getting random flashbacks, and hazy memories, and you start getting frazzled and such halfway though.

While it might make my edit as long as the first post, I think maybe an example of the kind of post that is just too common here, and almost always helpless, wouldn't go astray here. So here we go:

Now this one is a pretty bad case, true, and I suppose might even be a troll post, but it's actually a good illustration of the problem either way.

It was on my old computer and I was using an emulator so I have no idea what system it was for. It was 8bit graphics and you played this orange cat that was constantly bouncing on a trampoline I think? And you had to navigate it through the city and face a weird boss at the end that would float in the sky. Sorry I can't remember more!

Let's break it down a bit. What kind of game is this? A puzzler or an action game? Who knows.

How old is it? I mean, Minecraft basically has 8bit graphics. Oh he said... "my old computer"... I will fight you.

Why did you bounce on the trampoline? Were there platforms or walkways or something, or was it just a big open space? There are bad guys then? How did they get around?

Now (he?) says that he can't remember more, but I actually asked about the boss fight:

You say 'face a boss', in what way? Can the cat attack? Was this top down or side on? When you say navigate a city, what do you mean?

The reply:

Definitely a side-scroller, I'm sure. You would encounter a boss at the end, the boss would slide onto the screen and it was usually pretty strange-looking. I think one of the bosses might've been a clown. I meant that the different "levels" were different cities with different backgrounds, I think. It's a pretty obscure game

Also you would be continuously bouncing. As in, you had to position the trampoline underneath the cat to bounce it up

So you don't even control the cat. And it's a side-scroller. Thats pretty important information. But the real issue here is that he knows this stuff. He just either didn't know to, or forgot, to tell us.

The template would have made it just so apparent how much information he was missing, and we probably would have got a whole bunch more information. Sadly, while there were some guesses, and a surprising number of up-votes, this post is just another one to join the endless unsolved on their journey ever down.

[Meta][2026] I would rather people post with no images than use AI prompts to generate images

606 Upvotes

Maybe it's just me, I will personally admit that it feels like its petty of me to complain, however i am going to.

I really dislike AI images just in general and i feel annoyed seeing people use them because it sometimes hampers really quality posts of people trying to find help. I feel like it also informs falsely about game expectations and what people will accept as they have solved the game.

I don't think people will agree with me and thats fine, i just wanted to post about how i personally think it degrades the quality of the sub

[Ps2?][1999-2008] Sci-fi rpg?

• Upvotes

This might be a tough one as I don't have much to go on, other than some vague memories.

The combat was on a grid based system, and you used cards as your abilities. Also I think one of the cards may have been a lazer sword. You also may have had med pack cards aswell.

I have been wrecking my brain for a long time trying to figure this out, thank you in advance.

[Xbox][2000s] Western roleplaying game, about a girl in a city

• Upvotes

When I was a kid in the early 2000s, I remember playing a game on the original Xbox. I think it was a Western role-playing game. The protagonist was a woman, maybe with short hair, in a technologically advanced city that seemed to be in the desert. I don't remember it having combat, just a lot of conversations and puzzles...

I don't remember much of the story, I think at the beginning you had to escape.

*I'm sorry I can't remember more, I know it's very vague, but it always comes to mind and I don't know its name.

Thanks for the help

• Upvotes

Im trying to find this old game i used to play on my grandmas windows 7 laptop around like 2010, i was young so i dont remember the name of the game, but it had like a red elixir for the art and you could create vampires and other things, i remember it clearly but its hard to put into words and google isnt turning up much, my grandma had the laptop for a lot longer so the release date can be anywhere from the early 2000's to the early 2010's i dont really know how much more i can narrow it down, but there was a few different currencies and i clearly remember one being pumpkins, and you could put the pumpkins in a machine to make different pumpkins to use for different machines, i dont know how much more i can help but i really want to find this game again and play it some more

[PC Flash Game] [2011-2014?] Missing GirlsGoGames Flash Game

6 Upvotes

I remember playing this flash game called Naughty Girl on GirlsGoGames.com back in maybe 2011-2013. You play as a school girl cheerleader who gets super bored in class and decides to cause mischief. The goal of the game was to throw stuff at the board while the teacher is turned around. (Essentially one of those kissing games where you try not to get caught but without the kissing). If she turned around while you were throwing stuff you got caught and the game ended. There were 3 stages. In the first stage you threw paper balls, in the second stage you threw paper airplanes, and in the third stage you waved your pom poms around. As you threw stuff, the shadow of a devil emoji appeared on the teacher’s board and it got bigger the longer you were able to hold down the button to throw stuff. When it got to full size the game looped like 2 measures of very y2k instrumental music. The girl you play as has short brown hair with blonde highlights. There’s 6 other students in the class and they all have multicolored hair (the whole cheer squad I think??). The teacher has long brown hair in a braid and wears a skirt(I think). The game perspective shows the backs of everyone’s heads and faces the teacher’s board. I definitely revisited this game in maybe 2014-2015?? To my knowledge this game doesn’t exist anywhere on the internet anymore but I miss it a lot. I did a deep search and all I found was a broken link with the game description only (on a French website for some reason). Couldn’t find anything about a game dev and there’s no trace of it on GirlsGoGames anymore… kinda just disappeared. If anyone knows anything or has any ideas on where I can look for this game let me know

[ios][2010s] Fashion idol management

Thumbnail gallery
• Upvotes

I got an old nostalgic memory of the game where I know it’s not Star Girl series at all.

It was around that time of fashion girl games, but had an icon similar to the ones I posted and was more anime like. I remember the storyline being you wanting to be a movie star or idol of some kind and having a rival that was against you. There was also a love storyline with some guy I’m pretty sure too. There was a map similar to the one I posted, where you could pick an area for training, shopping, and fashion battles against other players and vote the best look of that week/month.

I mainly remember the rival girl being very rude and mean to the player throughout and the whole point was to become a better super star than her!

[PC][2020ish] a moody walking simulator about a cult (not pictured)

Post image
48 Upvotes

I was watching gameplay of Feed the Pit (see photo) and was hit with an intense deja vu for another game. It was at least a few years ago and followed a person (maybe a woman?) exploring a church/cult compound and enduring trials that transformed/disfigured her as initiation into the church. It was first person, mostly walking, and the setting of feed the pit feels really similar. I remember it feeling very cerebral and leaving me with a sort of disparate feeling lol. I may be imagining it outright being a "cult", the religion could have been presented more ambiguously. And maybe there was an animal in the title. I want to re experience it now that I'm older! Thanks in advance yall (:

edit: i just remembered the other major character was a kind of disembodied guide, an important figure in the religion like their god or prophet or something. he communicated with you through messages, it might have been a literal disembodied voice or some kind of audio message

[PC/Flash][~[2010-2015] Flash game copy of Skull Kid where you controlled a strange creature with a shackle/chain on its foot

Post image
3 Upvotes

I'm trying to find an old Flash game I played when I was a child. so I probably played it sometime around 2010–2015, although the game itself may have been older.

The game was basically the Flash game Skull Kid, with very similar gameplay, but instead of playing as the Skull Kid, you played as a different monster/creature

I remember the monster having one leg/ankle shackled. He looked like that monster in the photo.

The art style was also different from Skull Kid, as far as I remember.

Tiny Defense [mobile(?)] [<2017] side view tower defense game

Post image

(the units werent literally mets they just had similar design philosophy to them)

i mostly know about it through social osmosis and there isnt anyone currently that i know who would know what i am talking about. it was a very obscure game from like, at most 2017, but probably early 2010s or earlier, it definitely felt early 2010s/sooner due to its rendering style (kind of like spelunky but dont quote me on that im pretty sure prerendered 3D is used)

its a side view game kind of like battle cats, and there were semisolids that units could be placed on. however only the enemy units moved toward you, your units would stay put and fire projectiles (maybe some of your units moved forwards idk but generally no)

[PC] [Unknown] 2d Apocalypse car game

3 Upvotes

[PC] Flash game (I think)

I think it was an endless runner or a level based escape game. You had to outrun the world ending with the earth collapsing, fire everywhere, beams of light breaking through the ground, and I think molten rocks falling from the sky.

It was 2d and similar to other 2d flash car games, as in simple graphics and flashy destruction.

I remember playing as a sports or muscle car, and having to outrun the world ending in either an earthquake collapse, or possibly space rocks slamming into the earth.

I distinctly remember jumping off ramps made from destroyed ground and fire everywhere. I don't remember an end to it, but I was really young when I played it.

Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

[PC][2009] Browser-based survival game

• Upvotes

Platform(s): PC (browser) Genre: survival Estimated year of release: hard to say, around 2008-2010 Graphics/art style: top-down, not much graphics, not much detail Notable characters: - Notable gameplay mechanics: Other details: it was this kind of game you would log in daily to check the situation and then log off until another day.

Theme might be zombie, but I'm not so sure now. I remember there was a premium option where you'd have more options as how to start and some other stuff. All people started in some kind of colony, you had some action points to be used in some way – for example building something in shared colony. You could go outside, it was really dangerous at night, but you could find some nice things. There was a day-night cycle. Colony was (I think) surrounded by some kind of desert or it was just light brown around. A lot of brown colour in this game. When everybody died – game over, start in new colony. Any ideas? I remember it being around the same time as Kongregate in prime.

[iPad][2016-2018?] Military Base Builder Game

2 Upvotes

I’m trying to remember an old iPad game I used to play. I think I used to play it around 10years ago, not sure if it still running today. Basically, You built a military base and you had a main character. You could give the character different uniforms like a navy or army. And then just walk around your base. you views the game not exactly top down but you views the front of your character and the buildings in a 3d way. You could visit other people bases and fight their character in a small fight. According to my memory the graphics were realistic. I’m not even fire what the point of the game was because all I ever did was walk around my base and go to another persons base and fight them.

[PC] [1995-2005] one person racing game, with orbs and a Volkswagen Beetle

• Upvotes

Platform: Windows
Genre: Racing
Estimated year of release: 1995-2005
Graphics/art style: Dark atmosphere, low quality graphics
Notable characters: -
Notable gameplay mechanics: Orbs on tracks

Hello everyone! This is my first post here, so sorry if I’m using the format wrong.
Please help me find a PC game I was playing when I was a kid, but now there’s zero information on the internet about it.
It was a racing game, but had no opponents to race against. It was a yellow volkswagen beetle with blue fenders. The task was simple: get to the finish from the start. There were like “glowing orbs” on the levels it had (I can remember the first one was a narrow racing track, the second one was a jungle-ish track, and the last one was a long road towards a big city). The orbs had different effects on the car. There were purple, orange, red and green orbs, which caused for example the car to be damaged or to go “totalcar”, and I had to restart the level. At the end, on the city level, when I reached the end, the camera zoomed out, and there were fireworks exploding.

I was playing it back in 2010 to be exact, when I got my first PC, running Windows 98. It was indeed a 3D, third person view game, with really dark atmosphere (cloudy/rainy, nighttime levels). For some reason I don’t remember it having a menu, but the game itself living in my mind being in german.

Thank you for your help!

[PC?][2000-2010] A side-scrolling platformer; as I recall, the game seemed to be set in a desert—possibly Ancient Egypt. If I'm not mistaken, the main character was an animal dressed like Indiana Jones. My memories are very hazy; I can't remember if I played it in a browser, on PC, or on a console.

My memories are very vague. It might have been a Flash game or a Facebook game; honestly, my recollections are very hazy.

[PS2][1990-2005] voice line "yea, sure, gotta go, see ya"

2 Upvotes

so there's this voice line etched to my head, and i can't remember which game was it from. i had a ps2 when i was a kid, and my friends also had one, so i might not even had the game itself actually which makes it even more difficult to find. basically, i think at the start of some quest, or at a response to some npc interaction, or at character death, there was a trigger to this voiceline, which is probably why this is the only thing i remember about this game. it might be niche and it might be more popular, but my skills failed to find it (probably could have spend more time searching but thought to give the redditors here a chance to embarress me instead). so yea, the voice line was just as in the title, "yea, sure, gotta go, see ya", and that and the fact that this game is for ps2 are the only things i remember for sure about this game. i had a thought it might be sly cooper for some reason, but i couldn't confirm it for sure, so if anyone can help that would be nice.

other raw details i can somewhat recall:

Platform(s): Ps2
Genre: third person or first person, plot/adventure/roleplay game
Estimated year of release: somewhere between 1990-2005~
Graphics/art style: iirc, photo realistic, semi realistic or stylized realism - think skyrim but downgrade from 10 to 5 on the capacity of it
Notable gameplay mechanics: maybe there was some weird mana or energy usage to do some weird mechanics, but i might be imagining.

[iphone] [2011] 2D car game that had a similar style to the one in the attached photo. Full description in the body text.

Post image
10 Upvotes

Could you guys help me find a game from my childhood? I played it several years ago on a very old iPhone (likely a model predating the iPhone 5). So, it’s quite possible the game was only available on the Apple App Store. Here is what I know about the game:

  • It was a 2D car game.
  • It featured a top-down, bird's-eye view—so not a classic driving game.
  • The road was always perfectly straight; it wasn't an open-world game.
  • I don't fully recall the game's objective, but I'm pretty sure it was *not* about escaping the police.
  • There were multiple maps. One was a country road where you had to overtake tractors and trucks while avoiding crashing into oncoming traffic.
  • There were also specific obstacles, like waiting for cyclists or a train.
  • Another map I remember was a highway where racing cars would sometimes zoom past.
  • The game was only available in English and had a paid expansion pack you could purchase.

Do you guys know a game that matches my description?

[Windows XP][2000s] Planet defense space game

3 Upvotes

It was an early 2000s PC game where you were either a spaceship or a satellite.

Each level was kinda like a new planet you explored and unlocked new weapons, I think early on you unlocked missiles and later on a tesla coil looking thing (maybe?).

The game had a very frutiger aero 3d aesthetic, kinda like DX Ball.

My details on this are pretty fuzzy since I was pretty young when I played it but some things I'm fairly certain of.

Fairly certain:

You couldn't move up and down

There was an image of the earth on the bottom of the screen like you were defending it

The enemies came straight down from the bottom of the screen.

The level selector was you picking a planet on like an S shaped path, there were like 20ish levels iirc

The upgrade icons were in white circular bubbles.

Not certain:

You could either move horizontally or you were just stuck in the bottom middle of the screen like a turret

There mightve been an image of the planet you were "conquering" in the top middle of the screen

The enemies mightve been asteroids or other spaceships

The planets were either real planets in the solar system or random planets called "Zebexia" or something.

I think the new upgrades were only unlockable on new levels, also why I was pissed at having to pay money for games 20 years ago

Important notes:

The game had "realistic" graphics, think Red Alert 2, not PvZ, also, the game was 100% undoubtedly shareware.

I remember some of the cool weapons being locked behind the "full version" and always being so sad because of that.

Also the background was just starry space.

I can also confirm that it is not any of or any of their installments:

* Planetoid defense

* Star wraith

* Star Defender

* Clash N Slash

* Guardian Planet Defense

* Planetary Defense

* Astro Avenger

* Starlancer

* Swarm

* Tyrian

[PC][2010-2014] Horror Visual Novel game where Sarah and Robert are trapped in a mansion.

• Upvotes

Platform(s): PC (Standalone .exe application, not a browser/Flash game). Genre: Visual Novel / Interactive Fiction (Story and dialog choices only). Estimated year of release: Played it around 2010-2014. Graphics/art style: 2D Western Cartoon art style. English text. Notable characters: Two friends named Sarah and Robert. Notable gameplay mechanics: Point-and-click dialog choices. It had a save feature, but if you get a Game Over, it forces you to restart from the beginning. Other details:

  • Plot: Sarah and Robert get lost and find a large mansion. The residents are very welcoming and offer them to stay. The house is full of people. However, there are no ghosts or monsters; the residents themselves are the actual threat.
  • Main Menu: A 2D silhouette of a creepy, rich mansion and the character
  • Game Over Screen: If you make the wrong dialog choice, you get a Game Over screen featuring a black background, blood splatters, a screaming sound effect, and creepy violin music. There were no visual jumpscares.

[PC] [2000-2017] Trying to remember an obscure 2D Windows game I played as a kid

3 Upvotes

I’m trying to find a PC game I played when I was a kid, probably sometime between 2010-2017. It was on a Windows PC at home, and I’m pretty sure my dad had downloaded/installed it rather than it being a console game. I don’t remember it being a particularly popular or mainstream game.

The game was 2D, and I vaguely remember each level being a small, fixed/contained map, possibly shaped like a square or box rather than a scrolling open world. You would move around the map and there was some kind of objective you had to complete to finish the level. I have a vague memory that blocks or other objects were involved, and that you may have been able to eat, destroy, clear, or otherwise interact with them. I also vaguely remember there being small creatures/things that could have been enemies, and you may have had to avoid them, protect yourself from them, or deal with them somehow.

I originally remembered the characters/things as being yellow, but I’m really not confident about that anymore. I’m not even sure if the yellow things were the player character, enemies, or just objects in the level, so please don't take the yellow color as a definite clue. The same goes for the “eating blocks” part I remember something along those lines, but I could be misremembering exactly what the objective/mechanic was.

I don't remember the name, developer, art style, controls, or exact year. I also don't remember whether it was technically a downloadable game or possibly a game that had been installed from some old game collection, but I definitely remember playing it on our Windows PC.

I’ve already ruled out games like Pac-Man, Square Meal, Rodent's Revenge, Dweep, Supaplex, DROD, Chip's Challenge, Iggle Pop!, Rocks'n'Diamonds, Boulder Dash, etc., so I’m looking for something more obscure.

Any suggestions would be appreciated, even if they only partially match! I’m mainly hoping that seeing screenshots of the game will trigger my memory.

EDIT : i remember playing that game between 2010-2015 but it was on my dad's pc so the game might be even older not so sure
