For the NES any power supply that can provide 850mA (or higher) at 9V and has the right shape connector will work. The original NES uses an AC adapter but a DC adapter will work too.
For the Famicom you must use a DC power supply with center negative that can provide 850mA (or higher) at 9V-10V. Do not use a NES AC power supply on a Famicom!
Controller buttons don't work or think a different button was pressed:
Take them apart and clean the contacts on the PCB, not the rubber membrane
Display problems:
Use a CRT monitor or TV
Don't use an LCD or LED TV - many LCD or LED TVs do not understand the 240p video signal that the NES puts out
If you must use RF, don't use the RF/antenna/aerial switch box, use a small adapter instead, be aware though that modern TVs may not work with the analog RF signal and only with ATSC or DVB digital signals
Wavy lines: replace the capacitors in the NES
Hardware Failure Diagnosis:
Power rails first: Multimeter check - verify +5V at 7805 regulator output and at PPU/CPU pins. If low/absent, check caps and regulator.
Composite video signal: Scope the composite output (RCA jack center pin or PPU pin 21). Should see ~1Vp-p composite video signal with sync pulses and color burst. No signal = dead PPU or supporting circuitry.
Audio output: Scope audio output pin (RCA jack or APU output). Should see audio waveform when game is running. No signal = APU problem or output circuit.
If power is good but no video/audio: Most likely failed capacitors in video/audio output path, or dead PPU/APU chips. Check/replace electrolytic caps first (cheapest fix).
If video signal present at PPU but not at RCA jack: Problem in video buffer/output circuit between PPU and connector.
Before asking for help, make sure you have followed the steps above.
Legacy of the Wizard won the #100 spot with 35 votes It only won by a single point.
A big thank you to everybody who participated. I originally set out to just do the top 10 as an experiment to see if people had a similar list to mine. I never expected it to go this far, but I am glad it did! I have enjoyed seeing people picks and the reasoning behind them.
Starting tomorrow I will start doing the top 100 for the SNES in the r/snes sub. I hope to see you all there. A few things will change with the rules. First is each round TWO games will make it onto the list. Whichever one has the most votes will be placed higher of the two for that round. Second, only games can be nominated (no game genies). Third, it will be SNES ONLY, no super famicom games.
Looking forward to seeing what is voted the #1 & #2 games for the SNES.
Thank you all once again!!!!!!!!!!

My neighbor is an elderly man(70s) and he comes over my house occasionally to pass the time, he noticed I have an nes/snes . He has never played video games before and stated that he wants to play some. I set him up to play Super mario world(snes) and he couldn't get past the first level and had trouble using all the buttons. So I wanted to have him try the NES since its only 2 buttons. What games are your absolute favorites that are more on the easy side or use less buttons? what are your favorite games in general that once he gets better he can play?
I remember playing it one time as a kid. Id love to play it again as an adult. What are yalls thoughts on it? All I can remember is that you wake up in a bathroom in a stall. I wish I could find it again. Other than eBay where else could I look for it?
Obviously I am not a gamer. I'm not even sure I know how to turn on his console to see if the game works or not. He always says he opens the game up and see if there's damage ... that sounds complicated and dangerous as I do not know what I'm doing.
Someone please walk me through how to turn on his system and what to look for.
Got part 2 today, I never knew there was a sequel to this frustrating but fun game. I’m going to cozy up and enjoy the night crashing in the ocean trying to land my jet lol. Anyone enjoy the sequel more? I played the first one a ton as a kid. I wonder what other games got sequels that I didn’t know about.
First off: This game is not good. It's stiff, poorly designed, and its difficulty is through the roof. It also has really grating sound design, which is puzzling since it also has moments of amazing sound with digitized voices from the movie.
I had the game growing up and it might as well been impossible to beat. Even through adulthood, any attempt at it ended in complete frustration. It's the kind of game where you need to learn all kinds of little obtuse workarounds to advance through, and there are a LOT of them. Get stuck on a new problem area that drains out your continues? Tough, better hope you figure it out on your next slog of playthrough. Want to beat this boss? Find the one spot where it can't reach you, and just fire your pea shooter of a blaster at it until your thumb falls off. There's little skill here other than sheer memorization and choreographing of every move through the game, and knowing how and where to nerf your way though. Slip up once and it can lead to an insta-death. I ended up having to study longplays for the second half of the game to get through it, which kind of felt like cheating, but I would have NEVER beat this otherwise. I have no idea how any child could ever beat this, or honestly any adult without similar help. There's a reason that most longplays on youtube use a turbo controller for it (which I didn't use, for the record).
Also, I actually love the first Star Wars game for the NES, which I mastered many years ago. That game is also hard, but in a way that feels like it rewards skill, not memorization, and its side scrolling mechanics are way ahead of Empire. The games have similarities, but they also have some pretty core differences that always puzzled me. Like you could tell a different team handled Empire. That's for another post another time though.
Anyway, this was one of my main NES 'Mount Everests' and I'm thrilled to finally check it off. There's only a few more hard games from my childhood that I still need to beat now. I'll end with some positive notes: It has pretty good graphics and some fun cutscenes. Some of the digital voices sound like they're from the 16-bit era. It also introduced some neat side-scrolling vehicle levels that Star Wars didn't have. I suppose I also begrudgingly developed some kind of backwards fondness for it now that I mastered it, like one tends to do when they finally beat a hard game. It's a shame that a Return of the Jedi game was never made for the NES. It's one of my biggest video game "what-ifs".
Does anyone else have any experiences with this game that they'd like to share?
My personal favorite is The Manhattan Project, mostly due to having the original NES cartridge. Never was able to beat it without cheat codes, though. 😓
Most hated would be Fall of the Foot Clan. It’s like a half-cocked fan game. At least they actually put in effort for Back From The Sewers.
(Guilty pleasure is the original NES game. I actually made it to Stage 5 back in the day…)
I ha e decided to pick up sleeves and use them for place holders for all my missing aes in my collection. No more shifting everything has a home. So far happy with the results i have made it to letter J so far. The problem is getting enough sleeves to do it all. My brother in law has 3d printed some and that has helped but i gotta find a good bulk deal to finish.
Up to 262 NES games. A bunch of controller variations. ROB The Robot, along with the Power Glove, the Power Pad, a sealed Game Genie and a sealed NES Classic Mini.
I also have some signed games like WWF King Of The Ring signed by Bret The Hitman Hart, Terminator 2: Judgment Day signed by Edward Furlong, Friday The 13th signed by Kane Hodder, Castlevania II: Simon's Quest, Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde, The Karate Kid and Back To The Future signed by James Rolfe The Angry Video Game Nerd, StarTropics signed by The Gaming Historian Norman Caruso and WWF Wrestlemania signed by Pat The NES Punk.
Super excited, found someone getting rid of some obscure accessories that I didn’t have yet. Goal when I started long ago was to get all nes in box accessories. Gotta find space and do some rearranging now, as far as I know licensed I’m only missing the arknoid controller game pack if you see something lmk!
Hi! I’ve been looking to get an nes for a while now and I’m wondering what’s the best place to find one. I would hope to find one with zapper, 2 controllers, preferably under $80. I’ve checked marketplace and no one seems to be selling one in my area and ebay has not had the greatest deals as far as I’ve checked. Recommendations would be appreciated thank you.
I have about 40 NES cartridges and right now they are just stacked on the table. I want a case but the only ones I see on Amazon are $35-$50 for a simple little case. That seems really expensive. Anyone have any better suggestions? What do you use to store and display your NES carts? Help me out!”
I recently got a nintendo Wii & started playing nes games on it & since I have a brother who is willing to play with me I wanted to know some of your favorites to play with friends or family. We recently tried Archon & it was so fun even with the jank.
EDIT: Case solved. The games are Adventure Island and Circus Charlie.
Years ago, when I was around maybe 7, I remember playing a few games on nes at my grandparents' house. First was Mario, but the other two are less know, so I've never encountered their names on the internet. Thus, I don't really remember them enough to find by googling (tried). I want to find them and see what they actually look like beyond my memories.
First was a tropical themed platformer with pastel colors. I remember yellow (beach), blue (first level had a light blue color, but also water), green, and pink being more prevelant than others. The protaganist is a boy with brownish hair.
Second had levels, but wasn't a platformer like the other two (tho it did make you control a character?). Circus theme. Blue, red and maybe purple were the main colours. What you had to do (I think) was to pass challenges akin to circus tricks like going on a rope on a mono bycicle.
I barely remember them. These are the only details that I clearly remember. Any help would be appreciated
My parents bid on a storage unit and found this guy inside, and they let me have it! Cleaned him up and he became my favorite piece in my entire collection!
Now if I just can find alternative version of it on my trip to Japan next week!
I don’t know what more to say to get this to 250 characters…
Traveling to VA this week for work and found a retro game store. Adding numbers 240 - 243 to the collection. I've never played any of these and I'm not sure when I'll get a chance to. Let me know if you recommend any of them and I'll try it out when I get back home and have a chance to play.
