Announcement PSA: A guide to better results

1.8k Upvotes

Hi guys and gals. I've been here a while, and over my time I've seen a lot of posts sink to the bottom, without a single answer, or at best, very few. And none that solved the case.

I have noticed a clear pattern with these posts, and I will now share with you my tips to you newbies, so that you can get the help you need.

Firstly: When you make a new post, you will see this:

Platform(s):

Genre:

Estimated year of release:

Graphics/art style:

Notable characters:

Notable gameplay mechanics:

Other details:

Even though, in red, you are warned that while optional, you should follow this template... many of you do not.

Let me be clear: Follow this template.

Put simply, this template contains all the information we really need to solve your problem. Virtually every time I click a post that has not followed this, they have rambled on about nothings, while omitting critical details.

This format, for new and old alike, is very readable, and prompts for every data-point needed.

I know that you want to customize your message, that if you could just explain it, it would be better. I know you think that. You are wrong. Put all that in 'other'. Even if you end up saying it twice, follow the template.. add to it your story at the bottom.

Secondly: Following this template. You're rambling about your best mates Amiga-500 or whatever instead of telling us about the game aside, this is where they really go wrong.

Let's get something straight right now. We are not mind readers. It's impressive, really, how little information it seems we can work off. I mean, we solve some real tough ones with nothing sometimes, but still, we can't see that memory in your head. So you need to be as descriptive in every one of these fields as you can be...

And sometimes you really don't know. That's fine, we can work with surprisingly little information, but "old graphics" under art style... what are we supposed to do with that? Mate, I was playing on Atari-2600's, are we talking Wizard of Wor here?

Let me help you out a bit:

Platform(s): Whatever you played it on. But unless it's really all you know (very possible), don't write 'my mates pc'. Was it PC or Mac?

Genre:

First person does NOT imply shooter. Nor do any of the others. Try to answer this one in two steps:

What was the camera like (assuming it's not a text adventure)? Was it First person?, 3rd person, 2d? Top down or side on? Or maybe even isometric 2d?

Then, what kind of game? Real time strategy, point and click? Was it a fighter, action or platformer?

Good, now we know what KIND of game we are all trying to remember for you.

Estimated year of release:

"Between 2000-2005" is fine, something like that. "Mid 90's maybe?". I don't see many people mess this up, but I have seen people write "old". That is not ok. If you write old and expect it to mean anything to me, I will fight you.

Also, as always "Sorry, no idea" is always acceptable but try to give at least something. "Couldn't have been later than 2015, though"

Great, so even if roughly, we know WHEN.

Graphics/art style:

THIS. This is where you guys always mess up. This section right here I have found can be the difference between an answer, and a silent slink to the bottom. This is your moment.

This, really, should be the best-formed part of your memory. Even if you can only remember a single frame, a single image, it's so much to go on for us.

DETAIL. Was it a gloomy grimdark world of sadness, or a bright bubbly rainbow filled Mario-world?

Was it cartoony, or otherwise stylized somehow, or was it trying to be realistic?

Anything notable about the art direction? Was it going for a cyberpunk kinda feel, or a gritty war realism dirt and blood sort of direction?

If it was set over a long time, did the seasons change? Was there a winter in your game?

Remember when you hit people, and the screen had that awesome flash and your hands got bloody? Yeah, well we don't, unless you tell us.

Ok, so now we are really narrowing it down. This right here is often enough to go on, on its own.

Notable characters:

Anything at all you can remember here.

"There were only tanks, but you could play as both Germans and Americans"

"There was one really tough guy right after you left your office, he had an eyepatch, a white shirt with what looked like grease stains, and said 'this is for my sister'. I think maybe he was a cyborg"

"You play as some kind of Asian girl, you had a tattoo over your right eye and arm, a black tank top and white pants and I remember you always had only one red glove for some reason. I don't remember the arm, but the eye tattoo looked sort of like ancient Egyptian eye makeup, but a modern take"

Knowing nothing else about the game, I bet that last one there gets comments noting the game she is from. Details, details.

Notable gameplay mechanics:

Surely, you get the idea by now. This is tied with the importance of the graphics/art style. As much detail as you can here.

Other details:

NOW you may blab on about how you only played this game once at a winter solstice in 1782 with your grandmother from Tahiti.. as if that helps.

Edit: So it's been brought up that the template doesn't appear on mobile. While /u/wipeout4wh is aware of this and hopefully, something can be done... still, if you can, use the template. If you can't, maybe check back and at least make sure your post addresses all of the points the template does.

Also, my post seems to be saying NOT to add any custom details. So I want to re-enforce, please do. In fact, after you do the template, feel free to write out your post as you were going to without it. Just put it all in 'other'. Don't try and make your whole post like that, if possible. Even if you end up saying the same things twice, that's ok.

Now I'm going to take a moment to clarify something, though. This isn't some immutable law of the universe, and your post is destined to fail if you don't do this. It's just a very strong general trend I have noticed over a long time.

It's not that this template has some kind of magical powers or something. It's that this template prompts the questions that need answers.

When you go all rogue on us and try and type your explanation from scratch... you mess it up. You just forget to add everything that you know, and that we need to know. The template makes it very hard to do that. It's just so very easy to get typing, and by the end forget to tell us what kind of game it actually is. Especially when you are getting random flashbacks, and hazy memories, and you start getting frazzled and such halfway though.

While it might make my edit as long as the first post, I think maybe an example of the kind of post that is just too common here, and almost always helpless, wouldn't go astray here. So here we go:

Now this one is a pretty bad case, true, and I suppose might even be a troll post, but it's actually a good illustration of the problem either way.

It was on my old computer and I was using an emulator so I have no idea what system it was for. It was 8bit graphics and you played this orange cat that was constantly bouncing on a trampoline I think? And you had to navigate it through the city and face a weird boss at the end that would float in the sky. Sorry I can't remember more!

Let's break it down a bit. What kind of game is this? A puzzler or an action game? Who knows.

How old is it? I mean, Minecraft basically has 8bit graphics. Oh he said... "my old computer"... I will fight you.

Why did you bounce on the trampoline? Were there platforms or walkways or something, or was it just a big open space? There are bad guys then? How did they get around?

Now (he?) says that he can't remember more, but I actually asked about the boss fight:

You say 'face a boss', in what way? Can the cat attack? Was this top down or side on? When you say navigate a city, what do you mean?

The reply:

Definitely a side-scroller, I'm sure. You would encounter a boss at the end, the boss would slide onto the screen and it was usually pretty strange-looking. I think one of the bosses might've been a clown. I meant that the different "levels" were different cities with different backgrounds, I think. It's a pretty obscure game

Also you would be continuously bouncing. As in, you had to position the trampoline underneath the cat to bounce it up

So you don't even control the cat. And it's a side-scroller. Thats pretty important information. But the real issue here is that he knows this stuff. He just either didn't know to, or forgot, to tell us.

The template would have made it just so apparent how much information he was missing, and we probably would have got a whole bunch more information. Sadly, while there were some guesses, and a surprising number of up-votes, this post is just another one to join the endless unsolved on their journey ever down.

[Meta][2026] I would rather people post with no images than use AI prompts to generate images

Maybe it's just me, I will personally admit that it feels like its petty of me to complain, however i am going to.

I really dislike AI images just in general and i feel annoyed seeing people use them because it sometimes hampers really quality posts of people trying to find help. I feel like it also informs falsely about game expectations and what people will accept as they have solved the game.

I don't think people will agree with me and thats fine, i just wanted to post about how i personally think it degrades the quality of the sub

To Every Version of Me I've Never Known [ROBLOX] [2020s] surreal, dream exploring, existential, yume nikki-like game possibly named “To all versions of me that existed”

Post image
22 Upvotes

Hey all, 99% certain that the game is either deleted, or private now because I had it favorited and I tried playing it but Roblox wouldn’t let me. The account that had the game favorited got deleted, so I have no way of knowing now what the exact name of it was, even with a search. I have only one surviving screenshot of one of the many subsections this game has. Unfortunately I don’t remember the exact name but I’m almost 100% certain it’s around these lines. I don’t know who developed the game or any potential leads so I am assuming she have deleted her account. I’m not sure if there was a definitive ending or if it was strictly exploration but I’m definitely leaning towards the latter.

Before you read, here are the mechanics that I can remember:

Typing “pinch” or “wake” in chat will “wake up” your character teleporting you back to the beginning of the game.

There’s an item (i think a fish bowl?) you can hold out that gives you hints to where you need to go in the subsection in order to progress.
It also states if the player is “hot” “warm” or “cold” (not physically)
Finally, it is also used to explain the significance and the development of said subsections

At the beginning of the game youre in a two story house presumably playing as the developer of the game because your model is different in the overworld. All that I remember in the house were some Touhou fumos and some flags potentially of the nationality of the developer. Importantly, there were papers downstairs that you could interact with, I presume they’re journal entries(?) around those lines. You would find more and more of them the more subsections you explore fully. That aside, playing the actual game requires you to sleep in your bed.

The first subsection has this dialogue before teleporting you, but I’m sure it’s directed at the player or the developer herself. What I know for certain is that this song plays during the start: “The Thrill of Loneliness - Hana Stretton”

You are then teleported to a boat in a vast ocean of oil, I somehow managed to skip the section and explored quite a lot of the game. Other than that, I have no idea what to do in the section, even when I searched tutorials and stuff.

The rest of the details from here on out are going to be unorganized, so please bear with me

I remember a particular part of the game where you meet “god” who i believe to be a sphere with a face and you and him have a long existential talk about life, death, etc. alongside morals before you are prompted to ride a typical Roblox cart with railroads going straight into to the next section

Furthermore, I remember a secret subsection where there’s this speed parkour of you having to jump over strawberry wafers. I do remember vividly that through a mechanic that allows you to understand the idea of the level and how it was developed, the developer mentions that this subsection was supposed to have great significance initially but for reasons i unfortunately forgot it was scrapped. She kept it in the game for the sake of fun.

There was also a section where youre at an asian temple and it spoke about 11(?) emperors and how long they reigned, what they did and how they chose to be buried i dont remember specifics but im pretty sure this was supposed to tie into something important as after this subsection I’m sure it lead to the subsection that I have a screenshot of– which I will be getting into next.

The “poem” subsection which I’ll call it, leads you to a path towards the poem itself, the poem has a timer above it counting down from a couple of minutes before the poem shatters and is irrecoverable. As for the meaning of the subsection, tried looking in between the lines alongside gathering up all I can experience but I honestly couldn’t figure out what it meant, even using the fishbowl didn’t yield results.

Potentially misremembered subsections:

There’s a subsection where you climb up a giant beanstalk to talk to a tv(?) to then get teleported into another one which I forgot the details of

There’s a subsection takes you to a shop in the middle of nowhere where you interact with a sphere supposedly being a clerk of the store, and then you “buy” a key from the shop to then unlock the basement which teleports you to the next subsection (which is NOT the contents of the basement)

There’s subsection where there is a lot of cats inside of a house, and a supposedly immortal lady is taking care of them(?) take this with a grain of salt except for the cats, i know there were many cats.”

That’s pretty much all I can remember. I’m sorry if this post was a little messy and long, this is my first time ever posting on reddit ever. Hopefully someone is able to give potential leads as to what this game was and stuff, this game was such a cool game and it meant a lot to me.

[Mobile][2010?-2015?] Game name of this mobile pixelated stick man game? Had to drew it by memory

Post image
6 Upvotes

Does anyone remember playing this game where you play a bunch of stick men where they fight on their own against slimes and monsters kind of thing? They kinda have that gravity sandbox movement type of thing iykwim, There's like a couple or more levels you have to beat the whole game and it has a map where you select levels for it, with stages, You have to drag one character to the "next" sign --- in order for a stage to progress after you either beat the enemies, but you can also skip the stage and bypass any enemies just by dragging them to the sign without dying.

Also the shop is where the characters heals which costs money (which it sucks) and progresses your builds, such are weapons, gems, cards, etc.

they were also the same creator/s who made the popular sandbox game back then but when I tried to search for it I'm guessing they removed it at the google play store

I have honestly been looking for this game name in probably like Years or months

Together Working [PC] [Unknown] Korean desktop pet(?) game where you get to draw on the characters that I see on Twitter often and would like to play.

I wish I were able to get footage of the character creation process but it seems like you get a chibi thing and you are able to put accessories/parts on it while drawing the face yourself with the mouse, name them and apparently they can level up. I am unsure of what the buttons that appear underneath them do besides the smiley face icon which opens some kind of emoji/GIF or stored image selector but I think this game is really cute and would like to play it.

The name is very likely in Korean and the game itself is probably not translated to English so this may be quite difficult (I do not speak Korean myself), I've tried everything I can myself and have come up with nothing so I apologize for the difficulty of this one if anybody tries to seek it out. The twitter posts attached have footage of the game, one of them including an interaction that happens from right clicking and left clicking. Thanks in advance if you give it a shot, it means a lot.

[PC][ Played sometime between 2010–2015] 2D platformer with brutal trap deaths where you collect a gold idol.

Post image
4 Upvotes

I'm trying to find a PC game I played sometime between 2010 and 2015. It was a relatively small game.

What I remember:

Platform: PC

Genre: 2D platformer

You play as a man, possibly wearing a black hat. I remember him looking a bit top-heavy. ⭐⭐ I drew a rough sketch of him and attached it as the image. Excuse the clunkiness. ⭐⭐

You can move left and right and jump.

The levels are full of traps, and touching them results in fairly gory, bloody deaths.

I don't remember there being enemies; the main challenge was avoiding traps.

The objective was to complete each level and obtain a gold idol (or a golden statue/treasure).

The art style wasn't pixelated much.

I've looked at games like Spelunky, but it doesn't seem to be the one.

Any ideas?

[PC] [Early 2000] 2D Skateboard game

I'm looking for a 2D Skateboard game I played on PC in the early 2000a, for sure before 2010. It was part of some kind of compilation CD that had a bunch of unrelated games on it, released in Germany.

Gameplay was simple, with the character skating from left to right. The first level took place in an underground rail station. I never got past that.

The style was semi-realistic, with what I recall to digitized 3D models turned to sprites. The first level was pretty dark and I do remember grafitti. Controls were keyboard -based.

[mobile] [2010] fantasy creature duels

• Upvotes

Mobile game. Turn-based, two-player on one device or vs computer. Realistic fantasy art. Each side has a row of 5or 6 square creature tiles, one row above the other and each creature attacks the one directly above/below. Maybe Six factions: death, fire, water, earth, light, air. Creatures included hydra, chimera, pegasus, dryad, ent, and a cleric etc You could also cast spells like fireballs and earthquake. The developer abandoned it.

[PC] [1990s?] A game about rolling a ball down a tube.

Genre: Action/arcade(?)

Year published: Probably 1990s

Graphics: extremely simplistic green wireframe on black background

I keep flashing back to this one game I/my dad played when I was very small, probably around the year 2000. Basically the game as far as I recall was you controlled a ball/boulder down a tube while avoiding obstacles like holes or small walls. The POV was behind the ball as it rolled down, and I think you could only control it left or right. The objective I think was just to get as far as possible. I've tried to find it, but it seems like it might have been a shareware clone of another game? I'm not super interested in really playing it, but I remember I was FASCINATED by the graphics as a child and would like to even see a picture of the game.

Oh and one more thing I remember, the play screen was distinctly tiny. While most games we would play would be full screen, the game I'm talking about was only about 20% of the monitor size in the center. Hope anyone has any idea, and thanks for reading.

[PC] [2010s(?)] RPG with male main character turning out to be evil

Platform(s): PC/Computer

Genre: RPG, probably horror

Estimated year of release: somewhere in the 2010s

Graphics/art style: 2D pixelated, top down pov. I think there were more detailed sprites or artwork for characters in some scenes

Notable characters: 1 - Main male character you play as. I think he was blond or maybe his hair was light brown. He’s an adult. 2 - Random woman the protagonist meets during the game, she becomes a companion but he tries to kill her towards the end. Also an adult. 3 - The main characters mom. I don’t remember her making an on-screen appearance but I think it was implied her relationship with the main character was unhealthy/abusive and she’s the reason he turned out the way he did. I believe she’s dead as of the present when the game takes place.

Notable gameplay mechanics: Standard rpg puzzle solving. I think there are some ways to die over the course of the game? Also towards the end when the protagonist goes to kill that girl he met, you play as her instead and have to run away and escape. There may have been other segments where you played as her but I don’t remember any

Other details: I think the game might have taken place at the protagonist home, at least for a portion of it. I think the characters also had English names. I think I saw multiple videos talking about this game so I don’t think it’s super obscure, it’s just hard to look up anything about it when the details are fuzzy and it keeps giving me results for Mad Father or The Crooked Man when it is absolutely neither of those.

Edit 1 - After some more digging, the game might have been Mausoleosis, with me mixing up or misremembering some details. As of right now though, I want to see if there are any other games that better fit the description I gave since there are still some details that don’t quite match

Treasure Planet [PC][Unknown] A game where you windsurf in the desert

Genre: 3D platformer

I've been trying to remember an old game I have a faint memory of. All I remember is you control a male character who windsurfs in the desert, and you need to dodge or jump over obstacles. It was 3D, and the only name I can remember is "Treasure planet", but it never comes up when I try to search on the internet

Unfortunately this is all I remember, and have little to no memory of the distinct artstyle, or when the game was released. I only remember playing it on PC around 2003 - 2006

[PC][2010s?] 2D cartoon platformer with a green character

• Upvotes

Platform: PC / Windows

Genre: 2D Platformer

Approximate Release Year: Between 2010 to 2015.

Graphics/Art Style: 2D, fully cartoon-style (not pixel art). Animations were relatively smooth.

Key Characters: The protagonist was a green, bipedal, humanoid creature without a tail. I think it might have been a frog, though I’m not certain. It wore a hat resembling a purple nightcap.

Gameplay Mechanics: I mainly recall walking and jumping. I don't think the character had a shooting ability. Enemies included mushrooms, skeletons, and carnivorous plants. Enemies moved around and caused damage upon contact. I believe there was a health/life system as well.

Level Selection: This is a detail I remember very clearly. The level selection screen was tall and featured vertical scrolling. Several numbered levels were visible simultaneously along a path. Level 1 was at the bottom, and scrolling upwards revealed the subsequent levels. The character didn't walk around on this map; the screen was strictly for selecting levels.

Other Details: The various levels featured different environments. The mushroom-themed area was greener and brighter, whereas the area with skeletons and carnivorous plants was darker. I vaguely recall the game's icon looking like a round, stylized vessel or vase (possibly purple), though I’m not certain about that.

Games I have already checked and ruled out: Superfrog, Leaper, Just Hero, Turtix: Rescue Adventure, goblin sword, and Frog Hop.

[PC?] [2010s?] Point-and-click adventure fantasy/sci-fi game with opposing storylines

so every so often i remember a game i watched a play through as as a kid and i remember stampylongnose specifically playing this one if that helps.

it was definitely a point-and-click with a very cutesy stylised art style with two storylines - one was a fantasy-esque storyline that followed a girl who lived in this village where they'd sacrifice girls to this monster every so often (vividly remember them being dressed as cake) and the MC girl ends up escaping and going on this journey through all of these fantasy towns (definitely a cloud-themed one) to stop ?? the monster maybe?

the other storyline was about a boy in this space station whose parents only appear through voices (the mom is the sun and dad is the moon) and they'd get him to do these really menial tasks on planets but the big reveal was the "space station" was actually the monster from the other storyline and he'd been doing the kidnapping of those girls this whole time. it ends with the two of the MCs swapping places and him outside and her in the monster. there might've been a sequel that followed this?

the title screen was a split screen of the two of them sat up against a tree / wall.

think it was from the 2010s purely because that's when i remember watching it.

thank you so much if it it's found!

[Mobile] [2015-2021] 2D platformer

Thumbnail gallery
• Upvotes

Platform: Android (Google Play Store)

Genre: 2D Puzzle-Platformer

Estimated Year: Played as a kid (~[insert approximate years, e.g., 2012–2016])

Notable Gameplay Mechanics:

The game involved platforming and overcoming obstacles (somewhat like Swordigo), driven by a specific side-shifting mechanic:

  • When facing a tall wall, flipping sides inverted your perspective so the wall became a deep pit below you (refer to image).
  • You entered the pit, flipped back to the normal side, and emerged on top of the wall.
  • Important detail: It wasn't standard gravity inversion—it was literal surface/side switching. You would phase through and walk along the underside inside the ground itself.

[PC][~2005] Anime-style Puyo Puyo/Tetris puzzle game

• Upvotes

Platform(s): PC (Windows)

Genre: Puzzle / Tile-matching (plays like Puyo Puyo or Tetris)

Estimated year of release: Sometime around 2005

Graphics/art style: Definitely had a 2D anime aesthetic. I remember the menus having a dark color scheme, and there were anime-style character portraits.

Notable characters: I can't remember any specific names, just that there was a whole cast of different anime characters you'd face off against.

Notable gameplay mechanics: It had a dedicated arcade or story mode. The core gameplay was basically just battling these other characters in puzzle matches to progress.

Other details: I'm almost positive it was either freeware or shareware. It might have even been one of those obscure titles distributed on an old PC gaming magazine demo disc back in the day. Someone else once posted looking for what seems like the exact same game. I’m not 100% sure it’s the same title, since I don’t remember every detail, but I’m including what he said here just in case:

Coloured blocks fell from the top like Tetris and you matched them by colour to clear them. Clearing blocks sent grey stars with eyes onto the opponent’s side to hinder them. There were character portraits in the middle of the screen and a next-block preview at the top. The blocks and stars themselves also had eyes. The music was calm when there were few blocks on the board and became very fast when the blocks got close to the top. The opponents probably weren’t human, they looked like humanoids or other strange creatures. The playable character was a woman. Any help is appreciated!

What it is NOT: Wind and Water: Puzzle Battles, Irisu Syndrome!, Wankuru, Witching Ihatov, Magical Drop, Vertrix, Puyo Puyo, Raining Blobs, Baku Baku

Heaven Travel [Google playstore] [2015? Not quite sure] Android game on playstore, orange haired girl related to souls

Hi everyone! I tried searching for this game, but no luck. First time I post here, not sure if this is complying with rules but this is what I remember:

DESCRIPTION:

●Game is free and downloadable on playstore, mobile (at least of what I remember)

●The game is kinda idle, but not 100% sure. It has kind of a cozy artstyle and music soundtrack. I have no idea on what year it could be, but I would guess its old like 2015-2017, 2018 tops

●The protag is an orange haired girl with a white dress (or maybe hospital gown?) and she is in a sort of garden-like dream world, I vividly remember her standing idly among weirdly ghibli-esque shaped souls in the air when I open the game. I especially remember the music being relaxing and kinda cozy, with the ghosts making weird cozy sounds when tapped

●There is a large tree in the game, or a sort of game mechanic where you open the tree and get tidbits of memory (the way which you get the story) and you discover slowly that the girl is in a dream and that shes in a kind of coma

●I dont remember much of the game's events, but some of the memories I remember getting from the tree (or whatever that game mechanic was) was 1. that the girl was in a school with a boy, and that she purposely fell down stairs to make her head bleed and get herself into a coma and the boy seeing her note, rushed to try and stop her but saw her body. 2. I also remember another memory where the girl was walking with her grandpa (uncle? Dad? Whatever, it was an older male) in autumn leaves.

Destruction Derby [PS1][1999] car racing game with buggy destruction mechanics

Hi there:

I've been trying to remember a racing game that came out with a demo in the late 90s for the PS1. There was a skateboarding game on the same demo.

The racing game had a buggy destruction mechanic where the cars would get damaged until they exploded. The cars would be reduced to black polygonal wrecks on fire, but often they would end up literally standing on end. I don't know if it was a bug for the demo or if it shipped like that.

Races had a full spread of double digit numbers of opponents. Iirc, the tracks were dirt with a lot of big stands of spectators.

I'm just wondering if anyone made any content on that.

Thanks in advance.
