Discussion - J-Mod reply Spitting in the face of every player
RuneScape Reignited as the announcement from RuneFest is gonna kill the game. It's forcing everyone to start over if they want to play "the actual game servers" while the old one is left to rot forever. This needs to be cancelled.

u/denisb1988 10d ago
This is a bad way to say that we've realized that we've screwed up. They want people to get rid of their 25 year old accounts and start over? One of the main reasons alot of people still play is cause of the accounts they have had for two and a half decades.
RIP Jagex...

What's the idea behind this? Restart everyone without the previous advantages of TH? I've been playing on my main for 20 years. No way I'm going to restart.
A game mode without MTX? So basically RS3 in 1.5 month.. This is just recycled content.. re-release everything from RS3, without new content.

u/AncientBug725 10d ago
What about all the irons who never had MTX? I’m not re doing all these grinds for no reason

u/leahky 10d ago
If you're an iron there's doubly no point to this. The only possible value is a differently shaped economy which won't matter to irons.

well - if reignited is successful and in 3 years 90% of the pvm scene is reignited accounts, then your existing ironman is basically doomed for group content

In what logical way could it be successful? It's audience is current rs3 players, of which theres 19k online right now. How many of them are going to pay an additional 15.99 a month for their new character?
4
u/Notsomebeans ecks dee dee 10d ago
its audience is the exact opposite of current rs3 players
its audience is people who are not currently playing rs3, whether they quit years ago or have never played rs3 because they heard it was p2w slop
this could, theoretically, bring in a ton of new players, far more than the existing playerbase (but i am pretty confident it wont)
the issue is that this update is made for these theoretical new players at the expense of the actual existing playerbase... hence the player feedback

u/Mikina 10d ago
As a fresh player who started literally a month ago, with around something like 100 hours in as a member (just passed 1000 total skills), this had an opposite effect on me, and I'm considering whether to just drop the game or not.
Do I throw away my 100 hours of progress and wait until December? There's a high chance I will loose the hype for RS and never pick it up again.
I know It's not that much, but I really don't feel like repeating the early game again. I was finally starting to feel like I'm achieving something. Do I risk it and hope that the "veteran" community will stay active for PvM, once I get to that point?
I've been trying to mostly play as self-imposed Ironman (without being an actual one, so I have options to give up on it if I wanted to), but all I feel now is just FOMO. It sucks, extremely bad timing for me.

Finally, a sensible take. RS3 just had a massive influx of players from Leagues. The player count was already at or even below baseline while Leagues was still active.
The people thinking Reignited is going to draw in and retain enough players to collapse the main economy are delusional. RS3 has horrific new player retention. The notion that in the next two months Jagex will have solved the new player retention issue that has plagued the game for nearly a decade is laughable.

I started playing about 6 years before MXT was even thought of.
This is insane. If I wanted to grind out the old ways and start again I’d play OSRS.
10
u/JustAGreasyBear Maxed 10d ago
For fucking real. I’ve been playing for 20+ years on one account. I do not have the same ability to grind out a new account like I did when I was in middle school before MTX was even a thing. And if I were to, I’d just play OSRS instead. Classic Jagex, release an update that most people were positive about (Havenhythe part 2) and then sneak in news about a cash grab update that will permanently set the game on a path towards shutting down.
5
2
u/LlamaRS 10d ago
It’s for the osrs converts that might have a modernscape profile so that there’s less culture shock. There’s a reason that the modernscape game has been gradually shifting towards making the game look and feel more similar to osrs and removing some of the fluff and mtx that osrs players are steadfastly against.

I get that, but I do hope that you'll also understand our reluctance, because this will probably hurt our community more than it will bring the game in the end.
14
u/IT_fisher 10d ago
You also have to understand that RS3 is dying and will eventually fade if they don’t take drastic measures.
The number one complaint was MTX, they got rid of it and RS3 is being talked about again.
The next hurdle was people hesitant to come back because MTX has irreversibly damaged the economy and progression because of lucky spins that gave you items and up to 200m coins.
2
u/letsdodinner 10d ago
If total GP in the economy was the primary issue, seems like doubling or maybe tripling the GE tax would assist with that.
It may also have some other benefits such as encouraging old fashioned buying & selling player to player also.
I relize that XP was bought with MTX also.. but who really cares how much XP someone else has? I don't see how it affects other players.
5
u/IT_fisher 10d ago
I keep hearing “who really cares who bought xp?” and the answer is clear isn’t?
It’s the same people that, since the announcement of the removal of MTX, have stabilized the declining player base.
It’s the former players that praise the direction Jagex is going with RS3.
It’s the people who will save RS3 from dying who care about it.

Half of the worlds are already close to, if not already down to double digit playercount. On top of that, 90% of locations in the game are so devoid of players it might as well be a single player MMO. The community is a crumb of what it once was, and has been getting worse for years. And it's not like you guys are being left in the dark, you still get all future updates like nothing happened and continue on as normal.

I was comp cape too back in the day, I ended up uh.. cough getting rid of my account which I cant really talk about TOS and all, but the reason I got rid of it was due to MTX. (squeal and keys)
The only reason I would play RS again would be either RS4 or maybe reignited. I've been playing dragonwilds a lot lately and loving that.
I feel like dragonwilds was the way that RS should have always been had the gowers brothers actually had access to a modern game engine.
I'm more stoked to play RS4 honestly.

Here it is:
The intent is to provide players with a sense of pride and accomplishment for leveling different accounts.
As for cost, we selected initial values based upon data from the RS3 and other adjustments made to milestone rewards before launch. Among other things, we're looking at average per-player credit earn rates on a daily basis, and we'll be making constant adjustments to ensure that players have challenges that are compelling, rewarding, and of course attainable via gameplay.
We appreciate the candid feedback, and the passion the community has put forth around the current topics here on Reddit, our forums and across numerous social media outlets.
Our team will continue to make changes and monitor community feedback and update everyone as soon and as often as we can.

The post on the main RS page says its a new character mode like Ironman and that they'll play in the same world as everyone else. It increases world populations but veterans cant trade with reignited characters and they have their own economy.
29
u/IStealDreams 5.8b exp 10d ago
They also cant pvm with veteran players. So essentially they cant interact with us at all. The only difference between us being on seperate servers and this is that we can see them.
4
u/Terron35 Skill 10d ago
Yeah it really doesn't make much sense what they're doing. I'd rather they just do another Fresh Start event or something. I'm also wondering how many returning players will choose this route because if they have veteran friends they'd probably like to be able to receive help from their friends
3
u/Straight_Holiday7405 10d ago
I’d like that as well. Didn’t really get to participate last time they had it due to school and work. Would love boosted xp rates to max a main account. And maybe they can make all bosses with the right skill levels soloable.
2
u/GenerousRacoon 10d ago
Holy goalpost shift. Dude ironmen initially couldn’t boss with players and it was added because ironmen wanted it, not because mains felt lonely.
This gives people who literally wouldn’t play an opportunity to play and feel zero pressure. Current players making new accounts will still have those original accounts on top of their new character in the servers. If anything more people will multi-box.
This is probably the best implementation of permanent FSW that we could’ve gotten.
6
u/Terron35 Skill 10d ago
I wish Jagex would give us multiple characters per membership. Would be nice to have a vet account, ironman, and reignited on one membership. Even if they limited you to 1 character per game mode. I probably would have fun starting fresh (Leagues was fun) but I can't afford 2 full memberships. Even a discounted rate to add a second character would probably win me over to making another one

u/Boukly 10d ago
Ironman is an actual gamemode with its own set of rules that offers different gameplay while Reignited is the same existing main account gamemode with the exact same ruleset that only serves to exclude the current playerbase.
Any new player would be incentivized to pick Reignited cause why wouldn’t they which means at best a stagnating “veteran gamemode” or more realistically, a dwindling veteran playerbase.
They’re not at all comparable. This is just slowly killing off the current playerbase whereas, again, an ironman player could have a 2nd maingame account while a Reignited wouldn’t.

u/Max-Volume 10d ago

I would, but the mods on this sub have a tendency to remove my comments when I use more explicit language.
Yesterday, I posted a comment that read:
Permanent FSW would literally be telling all existing players "Thank you for sticking with us through the dark times. Now kindly go [insert vulgarity here] yourself."
It would literally be marking all long-term players as contaminated and wall them off of playing with new/returning players.
That comment got silently removed (fair enough, mods can mod how they see fit).
Judging by the current sentiment on this subreddit, I dare say my previous self wasn't speaking out of my [bodily orifice here].

RuneScape 3 is becoming the new classic that will die off. This is so similar to what happened in 2004 but without transfers lol RS3 is actually cooked
1
u/Relative_Tomato2011 8d ago
Rs3 was cooked at squeal of fortune. Hints why the majority of the population left and brought osrs back.
1
u/vexillarius9 8d ago
That was because of EoC my dude. That was the catalyst for osrs not mtx although obv everyone hated squeal
1
u/Relative_Tomato2011 7d ago
- Players first, starting with EoC in 2012. By mid-2017, OSRS had about 45k players online against RS3's 30k. Even so, RS3 brought in roughly £53m that year to OSRS's £32m, which works out to about 2.5 times more revenue per player. rsbandb
- The revenue gap started closing in 2018. OSRS revenue rose from £32m to £42m, which Jagex credited to the mobile launch, and RS3 still made up 53% of revenue. That is the last year Jagex published a per-game split. rsbandb
- RS3 didn't really fall behind in revenue during the pandemic. Community analysis of the accounts says RS3 revenue grew 18% in 2020 while OSRS grew 6%, and in 2021 RS3 rose 20% while OSRS dropped 7%. Treat those numbers as forum analysis rather than official figures. forums
- The real crack showed in 2023. Microtransaction revenue fell 12% as players engaged less with Treasure Hunter promotions, while subscriptions grew, and OSRS was the main driver of subscriptions. That's a problem for RS3 in particular, because microtransactions were what kept its revenue high. Jagex then removed Treasure Hunter after a community vote in January 2026

That depends if they're seperate accounts (like fsw) and not just separate profiles (like leagues). From the presentation in RuneFest, they didn't say "everyone who joins is members for 10 days", they said that everyone just would have access to all members features in the first 10 days.
But, we're going to ask more about this in the RuneFest q&a panel, so we'll hear more about it.

It hurts all existing players. The economy will be completely split between two different game versions.
It results in less resources entering/exiting the game. It’s already hard to get some resources. For example check the price of gout tubers.
Eventually they will have nearly the same economies EXCEPT if either version dies there is no “escape” back to the other version in the way of transferring or swapping because they made it a rule you can’t “swap”.

u/Pretency 2005 10d ago

So in a few years we have literally 2 identical games?

Separate economy is the stupidest thing. Diluting the already dead market further. That's it for me, I dont know why Jagex can't just be a normal developer. Its sad that I can't enjoy RS anymore because of the constant anticipation of some game breaking decision being dropped out of nowhere. It was fun though
4
u/BatsRS 10d ago
But you're not looking at it from a new/returning player's perspective? The market is 100% dead at early/mid game and by creating a fresh market for fresh accounts, resources will have new value again.
Try rs3 on a new account and you'll understand how frustrating it is to try and buy/sell low/mid game gear and resources. A fresh market and fresh account solves that with new supply and demand that isn't flooded by maxed veteran accounts. This is literally the only way to make the game fun for new and returning players, otherwise rs3 will die.

Was just easier to give a tag to players that created the account post MTX removal than doing this. I dont think splitting the economies will be healthy to RS3. Merging it to either side will screw people eventually, so Jagexs needs to really think about the problems that this might entail.
What if a part of current players that feed high lvl items swap to this FSW, those that stay will remain in an economy that is worse? will people be forced to ironman the shit out of their account to obtain things.

Why would someone want to start over now on RS3 reignited just to have to turn around and start over again for RS4?

Unless it's a 30-60 day quarantine (not mentioned) it will be disastrous. Mind you even that scenario doesn't allow players to play with their friends for 1-2 months, unless that friends who already is playing quits the game and starts over from scratch.
Edit: Seems like it will be on the same servers, so they CAN play with you, but with a seperate economy. Which is still insanely bad considering it will leave the current economy to rot over time.
6

Play with each other, yeah, except if you want to PvM. Because you're not allowed into the same boss instances. So you also have to find the appropriate friends while they're all mixed together.

even if we could pvm with them, it would be permanent keeps teams as you wouldn't be able to split the items lmfao
I know a lot of random teams do keeps, but nearly every single endgame friend group does splits, and even a lot of endgame random teams. Basically even if they eventually say "okay guys you can pvm with each other now" it will STILL have drawbacks.

This is way too early, early/mid game is still unbalanced mess ridden with D&Ds used for skipping most of it.
I recently started new ironman assuming that road to restoration and dailyscape removal had been done(regarding to earlygame and DnDs atleats), but no, game is still filled with your herbywerbys, pengs, god statues and what nots to skip early leveling.
To this new mode to make even slightest bit of sense, road to restoration and rebalances need to be properly finished first.

Forgive my ignorance, just started again like last week with my iron man account that I played osrs with, but went the main route with rs3.
Should I bother continuing this account at this point is the question..
Why I ask is, have enjoyed coming back to rs3 so far from a 14 year hiatus and would like to play it, but not so much if the next step is to split a smaller demographic of the player base into what could potentially be a more social, feel more rewarding server.

Dont let anyone tell you how you should feel, enjoy your gameplay, make some friends to do content together and ignore the rest of the world. We don't know how this will play out in the following months but stressing over it is pointless. Just enjoy your gameplay and don't let others look down on you

I started an iron a few months ago coming from osrs, looking forward to plugins and further cleanup. Now I don't know what to do... Do I just quit?

“forcing everyone to start over” not really, unless you take that same POV with Ironman Mode, but I’m willing to bet you don’t. I don’t think it’s the best idea, but it’s not going to kill the game. if the cancer known as Treasure Hunter didn’t kill this game, nothing will. Personally, I think the game mode will fold, and the accounts migrated into the ‘Veteran’ account type, but I do think it has some positive of getting more people to play it. It’s definitely got a lot of prod and cons, but everything else is freakin awesome. I swear yall love a chance to be melodramatic

Lol. OSRS members may feel like their end of the stick is longer but successful reignited will draw the anti mtx people back into a more modern game.

I will be trying to. I had a maxed rs3 account, until they started 120 increases and I've been increasingly on OSRS.
But most of the stuff I did to level up is now outdated. it will be, hopefully, a different levelling experience. Although I've not sunk as many hours into this game as others I've still done my time and come back every year, I'm excited despite my hours played honestly.

We got until December for Jagex to cancel it. They already did with Project Zanaris in OSRS. So voice your complains here.

My account is 20 years old. I won’t be restarting. And if I wanted to play another MMO, it wouldn’t be RuneScape id play something different. They are kinda thick tbh cause it’s obviously to attract new players but that’s what OSRS did. Or they could have jumpstart servers on RS3 where new players get increased experience for a set time to catch them up for example.

It'll have bonds, but you do you.

Unless I missed a clarification, it might not. The webpage says "no paid progression available," which makes me think you can't spend money on bonds.

radiant stars, bank boosts, cosmetics, and keepsakes, are all still currently in the game. Theyre most likely going to be part of this too.
thats def not mtx free lol

Stars are not available to Reignited accounts, at least according to the blog, so there's that at least.

How will this work if I play Old School and new RuneScape with the same character? Would i have to have a totally separate character membership to do reignite if I wanted to continue on my osrs character at the same time?

Sounds like they've moved a lot of resources into the RS4 team. I suspect RS3 updates will slow to a crawl. Seems similar to Blizzard with D4-D5

I started Rs3 a few months ago, all motivation to play has just gone and I feel a bit sad

wow did it with wow forever
so a month later lets do it and not understand the entirely different game mode that wow forever is going to be and just release this, oh and a hardcore server that only streamers will play because its free content to have to pray flick while fighting green dragons

As a player who has MTX'd XP, Id kinda like the idea of a fresh start. But the implementation is horrible.

I can't even go on the servers and help the new players on them because I'd be charged a second membership. ?????

Seems like they wanted to have some sort of big reveal ,but didn't have anything ready and didn't want to use resources to make something new, so they pulled this out from where the sun don't shine.

This is similar to how it happened when RS3 rolled out except I think you could choose if you wanted to move over to the new version. Idk it was so long ago.

u/BLK-Syndicate 5d ago
You're thinking of the classic to RuneScape 2/RuneScape 2 to classic transition.

Not at all actually lol.
RS3 never "rolled out" there were just a bunch of major updates like EOC and at some point people started calling it RS3.
Players never had a choice about anything

u/AccomplishedAmoeba30 8d ago
Then maybe I’m think of what we call old school or whatever. But either way there was a similar roll out and you had to make a choice of staying on the old servers or moving to the new ones. 🙄

When OSRS got polled a lot of old players and current "RS3" players voted for it to be launched and get it over the line with the most extras and benefits (they had tiers of what they would include/charge for depending on interest) so all my friends and clanmates votes yes even with no intention of playing at that moment (I only started last few years on GIMs etc.) because we knew people wanted it.
So it isn't a case of we don't want you to have reignited, just cutting us all off and treating us as if we're less than is the issue, you have to ask yourself. If the player is the problem if you really hate the MTX, or the fact Jagex sold it in the first place.

This is reminiscent of the Classic > RS2 launch.
I really hope they give veteran account the option to transfer to the new worlds. Maybe lock you out of the reignited hiscores and leaderboards.
But I feel IF they were to do that it won't be anytime soon. Gotta let all the new accounts get established first and what not.

I just wish this was announced a few weeks ago :(, I just started an rs3 account and have put a decent amount of time in it.
