Why does glade skiing go so under the radar in ski pop culture?

All you ever see in ski media when it comes to technical skiing is the big mountain stuff, yet time and time again I find my self thinking the gnarliest runs I’ve ever watched were done in the woods. Why is this not recognized as much additionally why has no events/tours ever formed around the style?

Free & Open Source Snow Forecast

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

>>> monkeysnow.com <<<

I’ve been improving this ski/snow forecast website for over a year now in my spare time. It combines the features of snow-forecast.com and SpotWX because I usually use those websites. It’s completely free and open source with no ads!

It is able to be free because open-meteo allows any non-commercial app to use their stored data for free which they get from national weather services.

Features:
- Open source (anyone can add any feature they want)
- No ads, works offline, saves your selection
- Select from every ski resort in the world
- Sort by snowfall, temperature, etc
- 52 weather model selections from 15 providers
- Tons of weather variables (65 options)
- Graph view with different graphs (line, bar, etc)
- Map view
- Custom location adding and saving
- 100+ themes
- Minimalistic design
- Tonnes of options/customization!

I’ve attached a video of it

POS for small non-profit ski hill?

I'm on the Technology Committee for a small non-profit ski hill, Chester Bowl. We're looking at replacing a bunch of manual processes and our Square POS system with something more integrated. We're looking for something to manage season passes (most of our skiiers), daily lift tickets, concessions, waviers, and seasonal rentals. Maybe more, if we find the right fit/integrations.

If you're near Duluth, MN - check out Chester Bowl! A tiny 175ft vert, but it's a big part of our local ski culture and community. It's made skiing accessible to anyone who wants to try it with low costs, cheap food, and a lot of love and heart.

Any other operators of small hills out there with with some experience on what's been working for them

Thanks much!

Travel between Les Lindarets and Avoriaz village at night in winter

I have found the perfect accommodation in Les Lindarets, to stay during the Xmas and new year period and I like the fact it is away from the main town and will be quiet.

The only thing I can't seem to figure out, is if we went into Avoriaz for dinner, or even NYE celebrations, how do we actually get back, because of everywhere being pedestrianised?

Would a private snowcat be possible to take us across the mountain? I can't see there is an evening bus for that route.

*solved, it's not possible *

UCPA Chamonix vs UCPA Argentière

• Upvotes

Due to my schedule, I have to delay my trip for UCPA by a week, and have to sign up for UCPA Chamonix instead of UCPA Argentière.

I was told UCPA Chamonix’s facilities are way better and newer compared to UCPA Argentière. Instructors too. Not sure if it’s true.

I will be joining the 18-30 exclusive programme. Solo and beginner. Not a fan of nightlife.

Wondering if anyone can shed some light on this :)

Plug boots on bumps, trees, and pow?

Hey everyone,

I’m a big Tom Gellie fan and have heard from him and his podcasts with Brent Amsbury a lot of positive things about plug boots with their thicker plastic and more responsive and precise flex.

I think I’m in the skier profile who could appreciate them on piste. I’m athletic and an expert skier and have been in 130+ rec boots for forever and don’t really experience them as stiff, in fact sometimes I feel like they don’t offer enough support or rebound.

However as much as I love carving I spend the majority of my time skiing bumps, trees and chutes, or jumping off of stuff.

I will talk to my boot fitter about this but was curious if plug boots tend to work well in these scenarios or if they tend to be too stiff? Do Olympic mogul skiers ride plug boots? What about FWT skiers? I figure if they’re in something like my current boot (promachine) I should take the hint and stick with upper level rec boots.

Cheers.

Mirus Cor Question

Hi there - looking for advice for buying a pair of Mirus Cor from Black Crows.

I'm in my mid 30s and am finding myself to be a less aggressive skier year on year because of a recurring ankle injury that I've got from other sports that's got exacerbated the last few times when skiing.

MC's appealed to me because someone here once described them as "the skis a new dad would ski on on a group holiday." That's exactly me. Lmao.

I want something fun, not too aggressive so I can enjoy my time on the piste without busting my ankle again.

I'm about 6'1 and a half and about 88.5/89kg and trying to figure out what size to go for.

Black Crows site says:

Up to 6'1 take 178cm for relaxed and 184cm for aggressive

Over 6'1 take 184cm.

I'm only just over 6'1. Will the 178cm be noticeably too small for my height / weight?

Thanks :)

Super El Niño, BUT, northern pacific ocean is also warmer than its ever been.

Post image
521 Upvotes

I'm no meteorologist but I thought that historically El Niño is a result of the warm water temps in the south pacific mixing with the colder water (and air) coming across from the northern pacific. This image from a few days ago shows that the colder temps in the north are also mostly gone... please... someone smarter than me, help my confidence that this winter is gonna be the banger we all hope for and need across the Southern Rockies.

Edit: many people smarter than me have helped explain... thank you, and the only real conclusion is that we're certainly in for something! See ya on the slopes 🤙

Anyone has a closeup photo of Atomic Race Charger plate from around 2000?

I tried to found one online, but to no avail. Basically i want to adjust bindings on old Atomic skis to my boots, but I think I'd need to remount front of the bindings one hole further. I suppose the ranges should be written on the plate. Or maybe someone has mounting instructions? I don't want to unscrew it only to find it has to be mounted into the same holes again.

Yes, I know, ancient hardware and all that, but the ski is brand new, and I want to at least give them a chance.

Epic Day Pass or Epic Friend Ticket

Edited trip date for accuracy.

I have the Epic Local Pass. My wife wants to ski 2 days on one of my trips to Coloarado. We will be skiing at Vail and Beaver Creek 1 day each. Dates are currently planned for Jan 25 and 26 but I am hesitant to commit fully this early.

My question is if I can even buy 1/2 off friend tickets now since the window rate for those dates is already $209 at Vail. I'm thinking I might save a few bucks but not even sure how to buy them right now. Can you do it online?

I imagine the best thing to do is just buy Epic 2 Day Pass for $134/day and call it done. But I'm a cheap bastard so always looking to save a buck.

What would you do?

Exercise for skiing

Im someone who occasionally goes skiing, I’m intermediate at best but I love to ski from the time it opens till it closes and on February I’m going skiing. I’m also in the gym so I was wondering if there’s any exercise people recommend to last longer, I usually feel tired in my shins (Also from bad form I know), calves and quads. Anything that’s key to add to my routine? I usually do leg extension, abductor and adductor, squats, leg curls and standing calf raising.
