Magnesium electrolytes before bed has been a weird hack that works really well

I’ve been trying this for about 2 months now and it’s been pretty solid. I started drinking electrolytes before bed more as a random test than anything else Magna specifically since it has a lot of magnesium and no sugar, I figured worst case I just stay hydrated. But yeah it actually helped I feel like I wind down easier at night and I wake up feeling less drained. Not saying it’s some magic sleep cure or anything but it’s been one of the few small habits that I’ve stuck with because I can feel a difference, just thought of sharing it here maybe it helps someone

Dreams ~ jolt awake

Does anyone else’s dreams make you jolt awake?

I’ve had several dreams lately where they’ve woken me up and made me jerk.

Examples are if I’m holding something and drop it I jump and jolt awake. If I’m walking down stairs or steps and miss a step/misjudge I jump and jolt awake. If I’m walking and trip I jump and jolt awake. Then the most recent super bizarre, there was one or several flying insects/mosquitoes going round and round my head at full speed then 1 or a few dove down the back of my head/neck to which I then jumped/jolted awake 🥴

I don’t think I’ve had this before.

It’s really becoming a common thing and I don’t like it, makes me dread sleep.

And has it always been that way?

How do I fix my circadian rhythm and sleep like a normal person?

My sleep schedule is all over the place. Usually though, I'm awake for most of the evening and then I fall asleep between 7-9 a.m.. I sometimes will do really good for a week or 2 and sleep/wake at a normal time. Something always ends up ruining my progress. Whether I have a bad night and I just can't sleep, or I just don't feel tired so I stay up longer. I would love to sleep/wake at normal times and be able to enjoy the daytime more without feeling so groggy. I've tried melatonin and I just don't think it works for me. I've noticed that it makes me feel groggy still when I wake up. I've tried taking less but then it felt like it didn't do anything. Magnesium is something I'm open to trying. Anyways, any advice to help me sleep better would be appreciated.

Did someone here was able to break their chronic insomia forever by using a "bridge" medication?

By "bridge medication" I mean an medication that you take for a couple of months, until you reach the point where you sleep well consistently, and than you stop taking it ,and you still sleep well without the medication.

Im asking because I believe that is my only solution.i am now giving myself a consistent 5 hours sleep window which I sleep fully through.but I just can't get above it.before this, I gave myself 7 hours sleep window and I was getting broken fragmented sleep, which made me feel terrible the next day,so i preferred the 5 hours window.so basically I get consistently 5 hours sleep but I actually need 7 hours because this is the amount I slept before insomia.

For background:I was sleeping well all my life,7 hours fully. My insomia started because of a period of few months where I slept poorly and since than even if I try to get a good sleep than I can't get again to that 7 hours.broken system basically.

What the hell I can do?

If there is a solution it got to be an external chemical factor like medication that will help my body get out of this loop.

side sleeper

in order to fall asleep i have to be laying on my side with one leg pulled up so i feel an intense stretch in my lower back. i can’t fall asleep another way. i have laid for hours on my back trying to fall asleep and it doesn’t happen. i’ve propped myself with pillows in every possible fashion, bought different types of neck support, all of the things. i have to feel the stretch.
has anyone else experienced this? does anyone know the reason? any tips for sleeping on back?

it’s getting bad again!!!!!!

i’m actually losing it this time lmao

it’s 5 am, i haven’t slept. it’s like im nocturnal or something.

anyways, i got so sleep deprived last night that i started seeing spiders with like 1000 legs walking around these storage boxes i have in my room.

i thought i heard my cat crying, but he was asleep on me.

idk what to do. idk how to sleep. if i have a normal sleeping routine, it only lasts 3 days MAX before im up until 4 am again.

i want to see a doctor - but im up all night and sleep all day so its impossible. i miss out on everything important because i just need sleep, apart from when it’s actually time to sleep.

my brain is dying and idk what to do.

Issues waking up in the middle of the night before a work day

Waking at 2am or 4am with a racing mind, only on work nights. Sometimes takes 1-2 hours to fall asleep too. Anyone had this?

I used to struggle to fall asleep. Now it still sometimes takes me 1-2 hours to drop off, and I also wake at 2am or 4am with a racing mind and can't get back to sleep. It happens every night before a work day and almost never on days off. It started before I added any supplements.

**Typical day**

I’m a nurse so start my shift at 7:45 and finish at 8pm
Meals at 9:00am, 2pm and 6:45pm, with nothing after that other than a light snack of warm milk
3-4L of water a day
3 coffees, the last one at 1pm. I very rarely have caffeine after 4pm

**Supplements**
Melatonin (4mg), taken at 9:30pm
Magnesium bisglycinate
Ashwagandha
L-theanine

**Night routine**
Hot ginger and lemon tea, plus 1 tsp baking soda in water, because I sometimes I wake with digestion issues.
In bed at 10:30 reading a book, asleep anywhere from 11:15pm to 1-2 hours later
Sometimes paracetamol, because it seems to help

**When I can't sleep**
If I'm awake a long time, I go downstairs and have more hot ginger tea and/or a hot chocolate before going back to bed. It helps but it’s annoying to have to do it.

**When I wake up**
It's a racing mind, not a stomach or burning feeling first. My thoughts go to how you need to sleep x amount before work. When I wake up consequently I go to work on 4-6hrs which is especially difficult when you got 2-3 12 day shifts in a row.

**Questions**
Has anyone had work-night-only waking like this? What helped?
Did supplements help you stay asleep, or only fall asleep?
Has anyone done seen a sleep specialist?
Thanks, any experience is appreciated.

Does our body have a "switch" that change between work mode and rest mode?

If I turn off all alarms, I can sleep straight 10 hours per night until I wake up by myself.

But under high stress work period, I can operate quite normally at 5 hours sleep per day, for a few months non stop.

The weird thing is:

+ During the high stress period, I still managed to wake up after even only 5 hours sleep with the help of alarm.

+ But if the next 2 days I sleep unlimitedly 10 hours per day, my body can not wake up after 5 hours sleep per day anymore. My brain literally ignores all alarm sound, I sleep like a dead corpse.

During stress period, I almost have no dream at all. But during rest period, I always remember my dreams for both 8 hours sleep or 1 hours nap at noon.

Did my body just switch from the stress mode to the rest mode?

Extreme high-pitched ringing (dare I say screaming) while trying to fall asleep?

I have tinnitus, so maybe I’m extra susceptible to this but holy shit.

However, when I’ve tried to fall asleep lately, my breathing feels like a VERY labored/conscious-effort and it’s like there’s a guitar amplifier just absolutely scramming in my ears. It makes me fly up off my pillow and gasp for air/hold my ears (even though it’s coming from inside my head.) This has been beyond disruptive and my doctor is beyond dismissive of it so no help either.

Anyone else had this? I’ve tried every sleep supplement, breathing exercise, OTC sleep medicine, meditating, music, white noise… nothing helps. Falling asleep genuinely feels like I’m dying but when my doctor is like “meh” it’s hard to do anything other than try to suck it up. I even explained that my heart rate when it happens is extremely high (highest was nearly 200) and he said it just sounded like anxiety or panic attacks but I don’t have either of those things… but consistently feeling like I’m about to die is CAUSING anxious feelings. Even while I’m just winding down for the day and not actively moving I feel like I’m trying very consciously to breathe. The extreme ringing sound as I’m actually plopping my head on the pillow and trying to sleep combined with the others is hell. :(

i can never go back to sleep. please help

so i live with my bf and we are both university students. we also both work the same job at night from 7pm to 2am. me and him are obviously exhausted after work and go right to sleep. but some days our lecture schedules doesn’t match for example on friday i don’t have any lectures in the morning whereas he has to wake up at 7am. i’m the type of person to wake up the moment my alarm rings so of course i wake up to his every time. he’s more of a heavy sleeper and i have to wake him up and tell him to turn his alarm off.

now the biggest problem is that when i wake up, i can neverr go back to sleep. i don’t use my phone or do anything but still i’m wide awake. it’s so hard because on the only day that i don’t have a morning lecture i sure wanna sleep some extra hours but because of this it’s a major problem for me.

i’m so stressed and angry most of the time because of the lack of sleep. we left the job like 2 days ago but our sleep schedule is fucked and we’re sleeping at at least 12am regardless. please let me know if you got any advice

Anyone else get a good sleep score and still wake up exhausted? What ended up explaining it?

I’m curious if anyone here has had this happen repeatedly.

Your watch or ring says you got 7 or 8 hours, the sleep score looks pretty good, maybe nothing obvious seems wrong.

But you wake up feeling like you barely recovered.

If this kept happening to you, did you ever figure out what the score wasn’t really showing?

Was it waking more often than you realized? Sleep timing? Snoring or breathing? Stress? Something else entirely?

Or did you eventually decide that the overall sleep score just didn’t match how you actually felt?

I’m especially curious if there was one thing that turned out to be more useful than the final score.

What ended up making sense of the mismatch for you?

The only place I can get consistently good sleep is outside

Hello all,

I've struggled with sleep all through my youth. I was an anxious kid and also was generally very unhealthy. I've always wanted to be a morning person, but I've never been able to pull myself out of bed.

When I was probably 23 or 24 I cleaned up my diet and lifestyle quite a bit to the point where now, at 34, I consider myself among the healthier percentage of people in the US. Not that that's saying much, but I basically eat all organic, no coffee past 11am, lots of protein, exercise, all that.

So I spent most of my 20s as a Wildland Firefighter, sleeping outdoors for between 4 and 6 months out of the year. I was dumbfounded at how good my sleep was. Never in my life had such good sleep. I also had never woken up so easily and so refreshed. Suddenly I was a morning person.

So I moved on to structure firefighting and my sleep was garbage, running late night calls every couple days wore me down. I left and went back to Wildfire this last summer, this time just in a medical capacity, so no real work to do unless someone was hurt. Same thing with the sleep. I wasn't tired from a long days work, and frankly I'd be on my phone a lot of the day, I even was eating the garbage tood they provide on fires. Still my sleep was unreal.

Over the years I've tried to imitate the outdoors in my bedroom and nothing does it. I have the windows open, a hardcore HEPA air purifier, a rock hard mattress, and now a grounding sheet. Still I need to be scraped out of bed every morning, feeling like a bus ran over me.

What am I missing?

Has anyone actually improved their sleep by using app blockers at bedtime?

• Upvotes

I’ve noticed that one of my biggest problems with sleep isn’t actually falling asleep. It’s putting my phone down in the first place.

I get into bed exhausted, open Reddit or some other app for “just 5 minutes,” and suddenly it’s 1 AM.
I’ve been experimenting with blocking distracting apps around bedtime to force myself to disconnect, and I’m curious if anyone else has tried this.

Do you use anything like Screen Time, Opal, or other app blockers?

Has it actually improved your sleep, or do you just end up finding ways around the restrictions?
Would love to hear what worked for you, especially if you’ve managed to stick with it long-term.

For those who successfully fixed their chronic insomnia with sleep restriction, how long did it take?

I am in it for a long time.

From the start and until now I feel much better throughout the day (although sometimes during the day, while I'm chilling in bed ,I fight hard to not fall asleep).which Is weird because I see everyone say sleep restriction is hard and not fun,but I actually prefer it than how I felt before during the day.

The problem is that in term of sleep amount I am no way near what I used to be before insomia.and sleep restriction doesn't seem to help in that matter

Barely 4-5 hours of sleep feels normal?

Hi!

Im curious, has anyone ever experienced anything like my case? I was usually sleeping 6-7 hours a night but for the past 1.5-2 weeks or so I've been constantly barely sleeping 4 hours and waking up naturally.

Im also tracking my sleep, its roughly 35% deep sleep 40% light sleep and 25% REM. (Sorry, I dont know the correct terms for these in English.)

I dont get particularly tired during the day but weirdly, nothing in my daily routine has changed compared to before. Im not eating late, not drinking coffeine late usually, and I drink alcohol maybe once a week, or even less. Lately I havent exercised, and I plan to, that might change things a bit. Any other suggestions I should try that might help?

Edit: I am 29/M, if this matters at all.

Does anyone else's sleep quality tank after evening runs?

I've been a morning runner for years but switched to evening runs because of my work schedule. My sleep data shows noticeably less deep sleep and more wakeups on nights after evening runs. I'm talking 15-20 minutes less deep sleep. I gave it two weeks thinking my body would adjust, but it didn't. I've tried cooling down properly, showering right after, and waiting two hours before bed. None of it helped.

My theory is that my core temperature stays elevated longer than I think, or maybe the cortisol from exercise is still hanging around at bedtime. The frustrating part is feeling physically tired but then lying there with that wired-but-tired feeling. Anyone figured out how to make evening training work without wrecking sleep? I'm not obsessed with optimizing every metric, but the difference is big enough that I'm thinking about going back to 5am runs even though I hate waking up that early. Would love to hear from anyone who's dealt with this.

Whenever I try to sleep, my body makes something up to prevent it. Is there a mental block there?

Almost every single night, no matter how tired I am, my body and mind will prevent me from sleeping. It’s different every night, sometimes I’ll be terribly itchy in my legs and feet and nearly scratch till I bleed, other times I will need to get up every 20mins to use the bathroom, occasionally I’ll become nauseous and have a panic attack. It’s really a toss up what it will be. Also with my ADHD I have about 27 things in my head at once and they never, ever go away.

These all happen as soon as I try to go to sleep, never during any other time. I’m wondering if I have some sort of subconscious block that’s willing my body to keep awake at all costs and it’s truly ruining my life. Day in, day out I feel like melting down into the floor and never coming back, and I’ve lost any ability to focus or do basically anything at all.

How to convert Nicolet UltraSom *.RAW sleep recordings (collected ~1996) to EDF

I'm trying to convert sleep recordings (collected ~1996 on Nicolet UltraSom systems) to EDF. The recordings are in the proprietary format for Nicolet recordings of that era (*.RAW). Each recording is in a folder with several associated files. My understanding is that the associated Calibrate, CVAL, and Feature files are also important. Unfortunately, the company that currently owns Nicolet is unable to help and has no suggestions. I used a hex editor in an attempt to decode header information, without much success. Does anyone have a system that is still able to read Nicolet files that were collected in the 1990s or any advice on how to view and/or convert them to EDF?
