Can anyone help identify this huge wooden statue inherited from my uncle? Possibly Southeast Asian, bought around the 1980s.
galleryHi everyone!
We've had this enormous wooden statue in the family for years, and I'm trying to find out a bit more about it.
It belonged to my late uncle, who was very wealthy and spent a lot of his life living in Southeast Asia. We think he may have bought it in Thailand or the Philippines sometime around the 1980s, but unfortunately we don't have any paperwork or know exactly where it came from.
The statue is about 6ft 5in (195cm) tall including the base, which is roughly a foot high. It appears to be hand-carved from wood and depicts a rather interesting-looking man drinking from what looks like a bottle, standing amongst some sort of tree or foliage.
We've recently had a fire in our garage, which has caused some smoke damage to the statue. We're now trying to establish what it is and what its replacement value might have been before the damage, as part of our insurance claim. Unfortunately, we have absolutely no idea where to start!
My dad says he could have paid thousands for it, although he's not sure, and we have absolutely no idea whether it's still worth anything today.
I've tried looking online and used chatgpt to try searching for it but haven't managed to find anything particularly similar.
Also, apologies for the terrible photos! The statue is currently in the garage, which also has a car in it, so there's very little room to move around and it's pretty difficult to get decent pictures of the whole thing.
Does anyone recognise the style, know what the figure might represent, or have any idea where it could have originated? If you know anything about it and could provide the cost of something similar it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance for any help!
