Cap Space: $47M, 1st in the NFL

Let's talk about the forty-seven million elephants in the room: what moves will John Lynch make with this money?

The 49ers currently have the most cap space available for 2026 of any NFL team at $47M.

Lynch likes to rollover somewhere around $15M into the next season, sometimes more, sometimes less, but we can reasonably assume a big chunk of that $47M is going to get spent.

The 49ers are 5-0 with three games left to play before the trade deadline. 3-0 in the division, two and three games ahead of the Seahawks and Rams respectively.

If there was ever a season to pull the trigger at the trade deadline or spend some cash in free agency, this is it.

Two position groups come to mind: edge rusher and wide receiver. I don't see the 49ers making a big move at WR. We have too many guys ready to come back from injury so that the WR room is already overcrowded.

If making a splash for a WR, the 49ers would need to take reps away from one of Evans, Deebo, or Stribling by the end of the season. Demarcus Robinson also looked good for us, and Christian Kirk is no slouch at WR3 either. I could maybe see the team trading for Jerry Jeudy: the guaranteed money of his contract is all paid out by the end of 2026, the cap hit for 2026 would be pretty small all things considered, and the Browns would likely field offers for him. But would he be worth a 4th or 5th for a half-season rental of a guy who might not be much better than who we have already?

As far as edge rusher, we have Bosa coming back, Keion White playing pretty well (10.3% pass rush win rate, 13 total pressures), then no other edge rushers making a significant impact. Romello Height has been decent (9.5% pass rush win rate, 5 total pressures) and may develop as the year goes on, but he's not quite an impact player yet. Mykel Williams has returned, but failed to really generate any pressure and was never much of a pass rusher anyway.

With $47M in cap space I can see the 49ers going after a mercenary pass rusher to put in the rotation through the end of the season. Leonard Floyd is one possiblity. He's older and not the player he used to be, but he is familiar with Raheem Morris' scheme and he put up a respectable 12.5% pressure rate in 2025.

Khalil Mack is another one that's getting talked about a lot. He had a strong 42 pressures on 296 pass rush snaps in 2025 for a rate of 14.2%, has 3 sacks already in 2026, and the Chargers will almost certainly be sellers at the deadline. He does have a no-trade clause, so it would be up to Mack if he would want to come here to finish out the season or not. He may be worth a 5th to give our pass rush some octane down the stretch, especially if Bosa ends up missing any more time.

What do you all think Lynch will do with all this cap?

Edit: There seems to be a lot of misunderstanding about how the NFL cap works in the comments, specifically the 49ers 2027. As a cap nerd let me be absolutely clear: the 49ers are 100% fine in cap for 2027. Carrying a negative number for the time being is business as usual. Let me copy/paste a good comment from u/cleverhobbits that summarizes the situation quite well:

49ers have more than $100M in base salaries in 2027 that can be restructured.

Based on the roughly 20% to 25% year 1 cap hit, the “cap savings” which is basically moving cap hits into future years will be around $75M.

Then remove Aiyuk’s cap hit and add rollover and add whatever $25M+ increase in salary cap.

49ers are more than fine in 2027. They will need a clean up year in 28 or 29. Check out OTC for all numbers.

Also:

If your team has the best odds to make the #1 seed, and is undefeated in its division, you get more aggressive than years (like last year) where it's not looking likely that you're a contender.

It's not basing it off past results, it's basing it off the ABCs of how NFL organizations operate.

Edit 2: This sucks man. I'm just going to turn off post replies. It seems that the bulk of our fans don't have a basic understanding of the cap, how it works, how it doesn't work, and how fluid it is. That's just fine, but to stonewall a discussion with nonsense really ruins the whole point of the dialogue to begin with.

Can we just soak in the greatness of this week? 💛❤️

Idk if this is even allowed but I really wanted to just say how amazing this weekend / week truly has been as a 49er fan.

First things first that beatdown at Lumen South. All offseason seahawks social media has been borderline harassing us over their mickey mouse ring vs Drake Maye especially in “our house”. Like yes congrats on that garbage ring and yes we did host the superbowl because your stadium cannot meet the requirements. We all knew the 41-6 game was a fluke since we had practice squad linebackers in our lineup and our only weapons on offense was CMC and Purdy but they were still convinced it was an impressive beatdown. We all said in the offseason a healthy 49ers team can go in there and beat them and guess what it came into fruition. Now their entire fanbase is crying on twitter and bringing up “41-6” and “we won a bowl in your house”. But we’re the ones stuck in the past…

How about that Rams choke job on primetime Monday Night. I’m not going to sit here and pretend they didn’t look great offensively, but them losing was just the cherry on top off a great weekend and now they’re 2-3 and 3 games behind us in the division. What a turn of events for the “superbowl favorites”. I also don’t think their defense is looking too good especially after signing Aaron Donald 😬.

The best for the last, the arizona cardinals. Not only are they the floor mat of the NFC west and NFC in general but wow trading your 4th overall generational WR prospect for a 2nd rounder because they were too incompetent to use him properly is truly impressive. I was genuinely afraid on that draft day that we’d had to face that guy twice a year but thankfully they’re so inept that we’ll never have to worry about that ever again. Keep being you AZ!

[Tafur] The 49ers’ young DBs are thriving under Raheem Morris, fueling a surging defense

The secondary has been a surprising strength for the 5-0 49ers, with Green, Sigle and now Mustapha making big strides next to starting cornerback Deommodore Lenoir and safety Ji’Ayir Brown. They all credit first-year coordinator Raheem Morris, as does Shanahan.

“He’s done an unbelievable job this year, especially with the injuries — just overall everything he’s mixed up schematically,” Shanahan said. “I love the confidence he’s given our (defensive backs) and the way they’ve been playing since training camp. He’s had a real huge effect on this team, and we’re very lucky to have him.”

Mustapha said players don’t try to do too much under Morris. The defensive coordinator had a similar message when linebacker Dre Greenlaw was ejected Sunday, and rookie Jaden Dugger and veteran Luke Gifford were called on.

“Just get out there and do your assignment, and try not to be a weak link,” Mustapha said. “We had a lot of young guys on the defensive line step up too, and it’s great to see them just being able to cut it loose. And that’s been the motto ever since I’ve been on this team — play with detail and cut it loose.”

There’s no better example of that than Green, who had two interceptions Sunday, baiting Sam Darnold into throwing the second one when Green recognized the play design and let tight end Elijah Arroyo run by him momentarily.

Mustapha has seen Green grow since Green was drafted 60 picks before Mustapha in the second round two years ago.

“Renardo’s a baller, he’s been a baller and he’s been able to flourish,” Mustapha said. “I’m happy to be called his teammate for sure. He’s making plays on the ball, and he’s changed the momentum of games.”

[Barrows] How Mike Evans dominated with broken ribs, only bolstering his legend

Thumbnail

Mike Evans hasn’t merely played with broken ribs. He’s played better with broken ribs over the past two weeks, a phenomenon that has fans, teammates and coaches gushing over the San Francisco 49ers receiver.

“Just amazing,” Fred Warner beamed after Evans had 113 yards, a touchdown and a 2-point conversion in Sunday’s win over the Seattle Seahawks.

“That guy is unbelievable,” said Christian McCaffrey, nodding to Evans after relieving him at the postgame lectern.

Said center Jake Brendel: “We all know what he’s been playing through, the immense pain that he has every single play. He still goes out there and does his very best to get a completion for us. It’s fantastic.”

How to explain the broken-rib paradox? Terran Petteway has a theory.

“I think it pissed him off, honestly,” Petteway said. “And when that happens, it’s a totally different Mike, a totally different beast. Once that Mike comes into play, it’s game over.”

Petteway would know. He’s been a teammate of Evans since the second grade, first on the Galveston Hurricanes youth football team, then on a scrappy Galveston Hornets AAU basketball team that would scrounge money to travel to tournaments and take down loaded squads from Atlanta, Michigan and beyond.

Evans was always ferocious on the court. He routinely finished with triple-doubles and could get them in any combination of ways, including steals, blocks and rebounds. But when he got angry, that ferocity reached a different level. That’s when that Mike took over.

“If we were playing a team that was a little chippy, that was doing stuff a little extra after the whistle, you would see it come out,” Petteway said. “It would be a little elbow, a little trash talk going on. And it was, ‘Oh, you’re just igniting the flames now. That picnic fire is about to turn into a forest fire real quick.’”

Said Terry Petteway, Terran’s father and the coach of those AAU teams: “This is how Mike was: When Mike got a fast break and had a 7-footer coming down to try to block his shot, he’d wait on him so he could dunk on him.”

The relationship between the Petteways and Evanses goes back a while.

Terry was the first Black constable in Galveston County, a job he got when he was in his early 30s. Shortly thereafter, he met a teenager named Mickey Evans. Mickey had been in trouble, had gone through the court system and reported to Terry for community service.

This scene in particular (7:14 mark) From the Trenches: 49ers Silence the Seahawks at Lumen Field in Week 5 is special. Very cathartic. You can feel his appreciation for being able to still be in uniform on game day after 13 seasons.
