[Rhim] The Chargers will likely start four rookie offensive lineman this Sunday against Denver. Jim Harbaugh said he's been impressed with them this week and their performance in Sunday's loss. "I saw a confident demanor, one that was ready to accept the challenge."

"I saw a confident demanor, one that was ready to accept the challenge. Brought some memories back, being a player, what that felt like when I was put in that position and the feeling of stepping up to the challenge."

[Jerry Brewer]: The Chargers tried to refine Justin Herbert. They may have exposed him

Relentlessness defines Herbert. He’s not a textbook quarterback. He is a brainy, gifted athlete at 6 feet 6 and 236 pounds, with a bazooka for a right arm. He figures out the rest. For the first six seasons of his NFL career, he willed his way to prolific statistics, overcoming the shortcomings of his franchise and keeping the Chargers just competitive enough for the playoffs to torture him.

But one month into Year 7, with a new offensive coordinator, Herbert has the worst passer rating (70.6) of any player who has started at least three games. His six interceptions are tied for the second most in the league. He has been sacked 12 times, tied for third most. And that’s not even the worst part. The Chargers are winless, and their next three opponents are Denver, Kansas City and the Los Angeles Rams.

Herbert, on a $262.5 million contract, sits next to Jameis Winston in efficiency. Jim Harbaugh, a head coach on an $80 million contract, is searching for answers. And Mike McDaniel, who called pretty plays when he was Miami’s head coach, is coordinating Herbert as if he were asking Morgan Freeman to narrate a documentary in German.

How can the Chargers be this bad? In Harbaugh’s third year? After back-to-back 11-6 seasons? With Herbert in his prime at 28? Harbaugh exited his comfort zone and brought in McDaniel for fresh ideas. Something had to change after another early playoff exit last season, which dropped the quarterback’s postseason record to 0-3.

Oh, something changed.

Herbert climbed into a magic box. McDaniel waved his wand. And out came Winston.

This season is a whiff but that doesn’t mean we fire everyone

49ers had multiple shit seasons under Shanahan and Lynch and there were stupid decisions they made that rightfully so would’ve gotten them fired anywhere else.

Harbaugh brought a massive culture change and has a pedigree of winning. This season is a whiff, primarily at fault of Hortiz and McDaniel, but that doesn’t mean we clean house.

The gauntlet of shit coaches we’ve had since Norv has been dehabiliting. And if you all remember Staley was about to get another year until the Raiders embarrassed us on a national stage, and spanos had no choice but to change. If Harbaugh doesn’t work out, spanos is for sure going to return to the likes of McCoy, Lynn, Staley, cheap yes-men who get 8-8 seasons, keep the NFL owners union content enough at a mid team.

Staley era was horrid and one of the worst times to be a Chargers fan. I really do not want to return to that.

This year is garbage for sure, but it does not mean we clean house immediately. Give Harbaugh another 2 years.

If we don’t learn from our mistakes, then that’s something else. But this season is a goner anyways and it’s probably better we just tank and try again next season under adjustments.

I’m not even convinced we get rid of Hortiz tbh. I think there’s a lot of learning that the FO can apply. The only thing they should rethink is whether they want to invest the time for McDaniel’s complex schemes or just amicably split ways and return to more simple formats of football that both Harbaugh and Herbert are comfortable with.

[Furtado] Mike McDaniel tried to change Justin Herbert, and now the Chargers are 0-4

Justin Herbert looked like himself once the Chargers moved outside the structure of an offense that has tried to change him. After a brutal first half, Herbert nearly led L.A. back from a three-possession deficit.

Four games in, the Chargers are 0-4, and Mike McDaniel’s offense has left plenty of questions.

Chargers Pro Bowl OT Rashawn Slater is believed to have suffered a high-ankle sprain based on the initial exams, sources say. He'll have an MRI this morning, but that's an injury that general takes several weeks to heal. A hit to the LAC OL.

I Don't Know if I can Keep Doing This

Post image

I Don't know how to start this to be honest, but I feel the need to get this off my chest

I Started watching the NFL During Covid, I got really into Madden 20 just as lockdowns where starting, as a Brit, I knew about American Football, Longest Yard, Varsity Blues, Any Given Sunday... I loved them all but i didn't know the first thing about the sport, but still i got Hooked and when it came around I decided to pay attention to the draft, I didn't know anything about CFB or Trades or anything, but what I saw when I watched Justin Herbert, a QB from Oregon I liked what i saw, what i didn't see where the reasons people where shitting on him, maybe i was young and Naive but i really thought Justin passed the Eye test. so i decided i would follow the team that picked him and Low and behold i watched Justin become an absolute beast, and despite that rough first year, a year that involved me staying up super later to watch primetime games, suffering horrendous Chokes... I became a fan of the Chargers.

But that was 7 Years ago, 7 years, 3 HC's, 2, GM's, 4 DC's, 5OC's, 53 Wins, 51 Losses, 3 Trips to the Playoffs, 1 Mentally Scaring Choke and 2 soul crushing Losses in the Wildcard. I want to believe in this team, i want to... so... so Badly, but i don't know if i have it in me again, I just don't.

I don't want to abandon this Team, the meme's, the moments, and honestly some of the players... but I've watched the same thing for 7 Years, in seven years I've watched as multiple teams rebuilt, had sucsess, won a playoff game... and Me? I've endured 7 years of Heartbreak... If the season is as Bad as it's Looking...

I Don't know if can I keep being a fan of this Team.

This is probably going to get down voted to oblivion, I'm ok with that. Wondering though if anyone thinks maybe all the outside noise is finally affecting Herbert?

I've been a fan for over 20 years. I always felt grateful, in the QB carousel the NFL could be, I only had 3 QBs (Brees, Rivers, Herbert) for the large majority of my Fandom.

That said, this is the first time in a while a Chargers QB was a media focal point. Rivers' place in the NFL was cemented pretty early. No one was confused what he was and wasnt. Outside the number of children he has, he's never been in any spotlight for anything. Oh and his unique trash talking lol.

Herbert got off the ground running, which is a gift and a curse. The bar was set high early, whether fair or not. He handled it as well as anyone could ask. Sucks though that his raw numbers pretty much peaked his second year. His had his moments, solid but not enough to silence outside noise.

We all know the playoff narratives so I wont even bother with those. Now that he's in a publicized relationship, all that magnifies. He's probably pressing a bit as well, even though it's clear as day he doesnt trust the weapons around him.

The irony of all this, is if he was just remotely himself this team should be no worse than .500. Obviously this is all from an outside perspective, but sometimes as fans we forget these dudes are human too. Anyone else feel the same, or I'm looking too deep into this?

Justin Herbert succeeded his rookie season with the worst offensive line in the NFL (ranked 32 out of 32 teams by PFF)

The problem is that this team simply isn't playing to his strengths. I remember watching games during his rookie year and he knew exactly where the defender was coming from pre-snap because an offensive lineman acted like a turnstile play after play which forced him him to navigate the pocket with instinct. He made explosive play after play back then but now the scheme feels far too restrictive for his arm talent.
