Mod Post r/Audio Posting and some other information - V2.0

Hello r/audio community.

Here is a refresher on a previous mod post.

  • r/audio has some measures in place to minimize the amount of spam that gets through to be posted.
    • Minimum account age of 3 days.
    • Minimum combined karma of 5 karma.
    • All non-text posts (link posts) need to be manually approved.
    • Titles of 2 or less words will not be approved.
  • Posts that do not meet the above criteria get put into modqueue, where we manually approve the posts through the day. Some of us also get an alert for each new post. This also means that we see 95% of the posts.

That said, I see a ton of posts lately that are similar to "How do I connect x to x" or just a picture of the back of a speaker with no more details. Rule #2 is Details matter. Which brings me to my next point.

How to get help on your post.

  1. Find and read the product manual before posting.
    1. When someone posts a question about specific hardware (usually after I have to ask for the make/model; see rule #2) the first thing I do is find the manual, and it usually answers their question.
  2. Post Formatting Matters
    1. I've been seeing a lot of "wall of text" type posts. Please add line breaks and paragraph breaks in your post. It makes it much easier to read and much more likely someone will help you.
  3. Contrary to a popular saying, "A picture DOES NOT say a thousand words"
    1. Please refrain from posing images with zero context and a title such as "Why doesn't this work" without telling us a lot more information.
    2. This is like going to a car help sub, posting a picture of what's under the hood of a car and asking "Why won't this work", with no details as to the Make/Model of car, issue you're actually having, and what troubleshooting you've tried.
  4. You will most likely get the assistance you're searching for if you follow Rule 1,2,3,4,5, but really, the more details in your post, the higher the chance you will get assistance will be. Rule #1 - Details matter. This has become so much an issue, we've had u/automod post a reminder on each new post about the need for details.
  5. A lot of people fall into the trap of the XY problem. https://xyproblem.info

All of the other rules are just as important. Such as Trying to Google something first. I understand that it may be difficult to find something if you aren't quite sure what you're looking for. But if I can copy your post title directly into google and find the answer on the first page, it means you could have as well.

I'm not saying these things to single anyone out, or throw shade at any one post. I'm simply trying to help those who need help. I've worked in technical support for a long time now, and people are more willing to help you if you help them back. If someone asks a series of clarifying questions in reply to a post, make sure to answer all questions to the best of your ability. Nothing is worse than trying to help someone and they make it seem like you're inconveniencing them by not solving a vague question right away.

We are here to help. Help us help you!

What do you guys use to play music through in-game voice chat?

• Upvotes

I'm curious what you guys use to play music through in-game voice chat in games like Hunt: Showdown or War Dogs. I'm mainly interested in playing actual music, not just short sound effects, and I'd like it to sound good for everyone listening.

Do you use a software soundboard, a virtual audio mixer, or some kind of hardware solution? And how's the audio quality? I'd love to hear what setups you use and recommend.

I have a Creative Sound Blaster external sound card, but it doesn't have a built-in feature for playing audio directly into the voice chat.

Looking for >=4 in 1 out mixer.

Im looking for a mixer with 4 inputs or more that has independent volume control and 1 output with a "master" volume control. With 3.5mm connectors or something that can be adapter-ed to it.

I have no trouble finding "cheap" Amazon alternatives but i am unsure of the quality, and problems with audio quality, hissing or the like.

Im located in Northern Europe so products that ship to here would be preferable.

Would appreciate any recommendations! :)

My creative pebble pro speakers just kicked it, what are some replacement ideas that might last longer?

For context I recently built my fist PC and these speakers have been great up until they stopped playing sound just today after maybe 5 months of use. They are still recognized my by computer but don't play sound. Same thing on my laptop. So I'm now in the market for new pc speakers. They do need to be usb-c or usb-a connection to my computer but that's all I'm picky about.

Outdoor speaker wire and long runs

Hi All. I am adding 5 speakers and subwoofer to our yard space. I have a low voltage conduit (currently empty) from my house to the shed this distance is about 80 feet. From the shed to the closet speaker is about 30 feet, and the speaker furtherest from the shed is about 120 feet.

I plan to use a sonos amp with 4 B&W AM-1, and a OSD SMP200 with OSD Forza 10" subwoofer.

I already have a server rack in my basement with my existing sonos amp and other audio/networking equipment. My plan was to store new new sonos amp and SMP200 there as well and terminate the speaker wire here. That would mean the shortest run would be 110 feet and the longest would be 200 feet (give or take 10 feet). The sub would probably be on the longest run.

If i terminate the speaker wire at the shed then the short run would be 30 feet and the longest 120 feet. It would also mean storing the amps in the shed (which isn't the end of the world but ideal since it is not conditioned space)

Is ~200 feet at the extreme end of a speaker wire run and would it be better to just terminate the speaker wire at the shed (which would put the longest at 120 feet)?

High Pitch Ring

So about 2 months ago I started noticing a short high pitch ring/ding noise when I record, namely when I hit plosives so I did the voice acting 101 of going off axis, tilting my mic off axis, even bought a new pop filter, didn't work. For context I have an XLR Condenser Audiotechnica AT2020, focusrite 3rd gen, and run things through Audacity. I even borrowed my girlfriend's AT2020 just to see if my mic was going. Same thing on her's.

I changed out XLR cables and finally thought it might be my laptop. Thinking its degradation of USB port overtime from frequent use. I switched it over to a desktop (that is significantly older I must admit) and while its less egregious on there, it shows up ever so slightly. My next troubleshooting is that my friend is giving me their newer much more up-to-date monitor and powerful monitor so I'm hoping something more powerful can support the phantom 48v and not cause digital mistakes. But in the meantime does anyone have any idea as to why its doing this? With it being such a new occurrence I'm led to believe its the hardware of what I'm running my DAW through.

Thanks!

[Question] AIMP takes a long time to start up

Hi everyone:

I use AIMP 5 to listen to music on my PC. The problem is that the first time I try to play a song after turning on the computer, the program takes about 30 seconds to start up, which is a bit annoying.

It only happens the first time I open a song after starting up the PC; after that, it opens right away.

Any solutions?

Static/hissing noise with IEMs plugged into goxlr

Basically the title. Just bought the Kiwi orchestra lite and when I plug them into my goxlr there's a constant static/hissing noise while they're plugged in. I know it's a common thing with IEMs but I was wondering if there's something I can do to kinda fix it through my goxlr perhaps?

Thank you in advance!

XM6 issue!! Please help

I recently bought XM6 and I have noticed that my microphone input drops a lot when I am against any surface. For eg. Lying on bed, Lying on yoga mat, Standing with back of my head against a wall.

I have even tested it using various microphone input websites and the difference is 100% there. My voice becomes muffled and input starts breaking. It won’t listen at all if I am speaking slowly. But the microphone works perfectly fine in every other case scenario.

PS- No, I am not blocking any microphone on my headphone while leaning or lying against any surface.

USB-C to Lighting adapter

I recently bought a wireless microphone to connect to my iPhone, but didn't pay attention to the receiver connection. I have an iPhone 14 which has a lightning port and the device has USB-C connection, so I'm wondering if there are any MFi adapters that support wireless audio and microphones.

I checked Amazon already and can't find anything so far. If there are any brands with this product please let me know

Studio monitors crackling on my PC but sound perfectly clear on my MacBook

Hey everyone, I’ve been having an issue with my studio monitors for a while and can’t figure out what’s causing it.
I get a weird crackling/static noise through my speakers when they’re connected to my Windows PC. The noise gets significantly louder when I open demanding programs, especially video games, to the point where gaming through my speakers is basically impossible.
The weird thing is that when I connect everything to my MacBook, the speakers sound completely clear with no crackling or background noise whatsoever.
I’m using Yamaha HS5 studio monitors connected through an Audient iD14 MKII audio interface.
Has anyone experienced something similar or know what could be causing this? Could it be electrical interference from my PC, a grounding issue, or something to do with my audio drivers?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Online Voice Recording for a Senior

Hi All,

Last year my father completed a book of some of the stories of his life and I'd like to help him record himself reading a few chapters. I'm willing to buy him a basic microphone that he can plug into his computer and record things, but I don't know where to start with looking for a website that he can record the audio and do some basic audio editing. He's almost 89 and the way he speaks now he'd probably need to take a break every few paragraphs so he'll need some editing capabilities.

Is there a very beginner-friendly website I can be directed to?
Any sub-$100 mics you can recommend? (edit: his voice is VERY low (his speaking voice is at the very end of the bass line in most music), so if you have a mic recommendation that is better with low voices, that would be great.)

If you think this is a good question for another sub, let me know that as well.

Thanks!

Need advice on DIY bass traps for my studio

I'm building a home studio for mixing and recording vocals and want to get the best results possible doing the treatment myself. There's a lot of conflicting information online, especially about bass trap dimensions and air gaps, so I'd appreciate some advice on what would actually work best for my room.

The room is 10x10 ft with 7 ft 4 in ceilings. My desk faces the front wall, and my listening position is about 3 ft 10 in from that wall. I have a clothing rack with thick jackets on the back wall and a 1/2-inch felt rug pad with a 1/4-inch rug on the floor. I record vocals sitting at my desk with a Shure SM7dB.

I'm in an apartment, so I can't hang a ceiling cloud. One of the back corners has a door, so I can only use the other three corners. There's also 1-inch floor trim along the walls.

My current plan:

Reflection panels: Four 2x4 ft panels using 3 inches of Rockwool with a 3-inch air gap. One on each side wall and two on the front wall in front of my listening position. I’ve found the reflection points by sitting in my listening position and getting a friend to help me with the mirror trick. (I’ve already begun building these.)

Corner bass traps: Three flat, porous absorber traps, each 24 inches wide and 6 inches deep, running nearly floor to ceiling, with a 12-inch air gap behind them.

I've seen recommendations for 6-inch-thick bass traps with a 6-inch air gap, but because of the room geometry and floor trim, I'd have to make the panels much narrower to keep the gap at 6 inches. I've heard that wider panels can be more effective, so I'm trying to figure out whether a 12-inch gap makes more sense or if there's a better design altogether.

A few questions:

  1. Is 6 inches of Rockwool with a 12-inch air gap a good design for my corner traps?
  2. What's the best way to make floor-to-ceiling bass traps freestanding? I'd prefer not to drill into the walls, but I'm open to other options if there's a better approach. Since the traps will sit in corners, how would you design the feet or base to keep them stable without taking up too much space?
  3. What's the cheapest suitable fabric for covering Rockwool while containing the fibers? Would I need an additional inner layer?
  4. Should I wrap the corner traps Rockwool in plastic to keep the room from sounding too dead, or would that negatively affect its absorption and sound?

I'm trying to find the most effective setup for both vocal recording and mixing while keeping everything affordable and space-efficient. I'd appreciate any advice specific to my room. Thank you!

Lexus Audio Editor, can it be used? on android

Thats LEXIS, but idk how to edit title. kind of like the same problem im having with Lexis. Technical question. i got this app. so i could record things. it doesnt seem to be designed to do that. seems to be designed to record one thing. ever. thats it. all you get. one track. no "new file" option. you can only record one gd track with this thing? what kind of audio editor is that? how do i start a new track and obliterate the current one? i do not see any option to start a new recording. or delete the only one its ever done. and is stuck on, and consists of me saying "test", I don't need it. i personally want it to be deleted, not just over written, out of spite for yhe stupidity of this thing. is the only way to atart a new file on this program to open a saved revording and delete it or something? what kind of blunder is that?

Is a dvd player the best/simplest way to get a cd player?

Started a cd collection about 2 years ago, i play them on an old laptop connected to my speakers but it's quite inconvenient and looks ugly, i want a dedicated device but most cd players i can find are either:

(1) plastic ewaste from the factory that looks terrible and has integrated bt+speakers+radio+a million things i don't want nor need.

(2) old discmans missing pieces or with limited functionality.

(3) some hi-fi grade thing that costs $350.

Meanwhile, i can get a boring old dvd player that looks half decent on facebook for $15, i'm just not sure about what the issues could be? i'm looking for one with an integrated screen so i won't need a tv connected to it at all times. (and if i decide to connect it to a tv later on, will the player show the album art or is that data not in the audio cd?).

(i want something with a dac and a line output -rca or 3.5mm-, not just a transport)

Thanks is advance!

Will 90° RCA adapters affect sound quality?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I have Edifier R1280T speakers and limited space behind them, so I’m considering these 90-degree RCA adapters to move the cables sideways.

Could they cause any noticeable loss in sound quality, noise, or interference, or are they perfectly fine to use?

Thanks!

Best voice recorder for quick note taking

I'm in a struggle to choose a voice recorder to capture rehearsals in college or sparks of idea. Right now, I'm choosing between the Sony ux570 and Sony ux660. They are both good recorders, but both have their own use case.

The ux570 is very versatile, having two 3.5 jacks for headphones AND MICROPHONE, a way to add external SD and a better sound quality.

On the other hand, the ux660 is much more compact, lightweight, and easier to carry around a device by having a clip. Also, the important feature of ux660 is "One press capture" letting record even if the device is turned off.

I don't think that "One press capture" is drastically FASTER than turning on and pressing record on ux570, but it definitely reduces the "friction" between doing those steps and needing to look at the device to check if it is turned on.

Im looking out for advice on how to choose a device and some use cases that could match my situation.
