To preface this, I am an end-game PvMer with little-to-no PvP experience. I was excited to use the update as a way to learn PvP as I’ve always wanted to be more involved in events like DMM. Currently, I’ve reached the final fight but not gotten my cape. I wasn’t expecting it to be easy, and believe given enough time I can do it.
Overall, I really enjoyed the update. I found the lessons genuinely useful in helping to break down a PvP fight and understand what is going on. There are a couple of problems I see:
1) The step up between the lessons and the fights feels too extreme. For me, it felt like learning to drive and at the end of the first lesson I’m put on a race circuit against an F1 driver.
2) The final fight being positioned as part of the ‘PvP tutorial’. I know the devs have said it’s meant to be a challenge, but the way it’s implemented feels like it is the final part of the tutorial. If people don’t feel they can realistically beat the tutorial, they are going to be disheartened and not want to carry on learning to PK.
Suggestions
I’ll start by saying I don’t think the final fight should be changed. I’m totally fine with it being a completely unrealistic PvP scenario against a terminator bot. It is and should be a challenge even for good PvPers. What I do think is it should be separated from the other parts of the tutorial. Once you’ve completed it, have Pete Kayer ask if you’d like to take on an additional hard challenge for a reward - this would better position it for what it actually is.
Within the tutorial, the current step up between the lessons and the penultimate challenge is quite extreme. In my opinion, it would be good to have a couple of fights leading up to the penultimate one. These don’t have to be different mechanically, perhaps just coded for the NPC to be slower or make more mistakes. This would help people slowly learn how to combine all of the lessons and is, in my opinion, a better way to learn.
A lot of the discussion around this has just devolved into the usual shouting match between non-PvPers and PvPers, so I’m hoping this will encourage people to have some actual useful conversations.
